Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Check each mod’s instructions to see whether players also need the same loader or mod on their own computers.
Before you start: this is for Java Edition
This walkthrough is for Minecraft: Java Edition, not a Bedrock server. The official Minecraft server download page describes the Java server software and its prerequisites. If you are installing an existing modpack, use that pack’s server files and instructions rather than treating it as a collection of unrelated mods; pack installation steps can differ.
You will need access to the server’s files and a computer capable of running the server software. Java must be installed and compatible with the Minecraft release you plan to run; check the server and loader instructions for the applicable requirement rather than assuming one Java version fits every release. If you still need a host computer, Minecraft’s server page describes the general hardware prerequisite, but it does not establish a recommended machine or specification.
Choose a loader and match every version
First check which mod loader your chosen mod supports. Fabric and Forge, for example, are not interchangeable: a mod must support the loader installed on the server. Then confirm that the Minecraft version, loader release, mod file, and any required dependencies are compatible with one another. Fabric’s mod installation documentation warns that mods may target particular Minecraft releases and notes that most Fabric mods require Fabric API.
#1 Best Overall
- Check the mod’s download page for its supported Minecraft version and loader.
- Read the mod’s installation notes for dependencies and whether it runs on the server, the client, or both.
- Use the matching server installer and launch instructions from the chosen loader’s official documentation.
Do not choose a loader merely because it is familiar. The relevant question is whether the mod and its dependencies support that loader and the exact game version you intend to run.
Install the loader on the server
Install the server version of the loader in the server’s installation directory, following that loader’s current instructions. Do not confuse this with installing a loader in your personal Minecraft launcher: the server must run its own loader installation.
For Fabric, the official server setup page shows this example launch-command pattern:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui
This is an example, not a universal command or memory recommendation. Use the launcher filename and startup method provided for your installation and Minecraft version; other loaders may use different files or steps.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Add compatible mods and dependencies
- Locate the server’s
modsfolder. It belongs to the server installation. If it does not exist yet, follow the loader’s instructions for creating or locating it. - Get the server-compatible mod files. Download versions that match the server’s Minecraft release and loader. Do not copy every file from your personal client’s mods folder.
- Add required dependencies. Put each required server-side dependency in the server’s
modsfolder as directed by its maintainer. For Fabric, most mods require Fabric API, which Fabric’s server documentation says belongs in that folder. - Check client requirements separately. A mod may be server-only, client-only, or require installation on both sides. Follow the mod’s own instructions rather than assuming server installation is enough for every player.
Fabric’s player instructions refer to the player’s own Minecraft mods folder; those client paths are not instructions for where to put files on a server.
Accept the EULA, then start the server
If this is a new server, its first run may generate files including eula.txt. Read the Minecraft End User License Agreement. Only if you agree to its terms, follow the official server setup instructions to accept the EULA in the generated file. Mojang and Microsoft’s EULA says, “For the server version of Minecraft: Java Edition, you can install it on a server and host online play.”

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Start the server using the loader’s documented command or startup script. Watch the console or logs while it loads. Errors about missing dependencies, a wrong game or loader version, or a mod that fails to load are reasons to stop and correct the setup before inviting players.

Connect to the server yourself before sharing it. Forge’s documentation recommends: “You should always test your mod in a dedicated server environment.” A successful launch alone does not confirm that players can join or that the mod behaves correctly in multiplayer.

Best Value
- Give players the server address and the required Minecraft version.
- Tell them which loader and mods they need on the client, based on each mod’s instructions.
- Test with the same client setup players will use, then check the server logs if a connection or mod-loading error appears.
Let players connect from outside your network
Players on your local network may be able to connect without the same network changes needed by people connecting over the internet. For a self-hosted server, outside access may require configuring your firewall or home network. Minecraft’s server page lists Java’s default port as 25565; that is the default, not a guarantee that every server or network uses it. The official server setup guide cautions that changing home-network settings is involved and is not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Router and firewall steps vary by equipment and network, so do not apply generic instructions blindly.
If you prefer not to manage a home network, a hosted server is another option, but verify that the provider supports the loader and file access your chosen mods require. Minecraft Help points users seeking a personal server with automatic backups to Realms; that guidance does not establish that Realms supports arbitrary Java mod loaders.
Quick Recap
What to do if the modded server will not start
- Version or loader mismatch: Recheck the Minecraft release, loader, and each mod’s compatibility notes.
- Missing dependency: Compare the mod’s required dependencies with the files in the server’s
modsfolder. - Client/server mismatch: Check whether the mod requires a client installation or a matching client loader.
- Unclear mod behavior: Consult the mod maintainer’s installation notes. Minecraft Support says it cannot assist with issues arising from mod use; see its mod support page.
