To put out a lit campfire in Minecraft, use a shovel on it, place water in the campfire’s block space to waterlog it, or throw a splash water bottle at it. Bedrock Edition adds two water-placement options: place a water source above the campfire or let water flow into the space above it. Java Edition does not allow extinguishing from the campfire’s bottom face. Rain never puts a campfire out, so waiting for a storm will not work. Extinguishing preserves the campfire block, but it changes the progress of food cooking on it; breaking the block has a different consequence for those items.
Which methods put out a Minecraft campfire?
There are three dependable methods in both editions: a shovel interaction, waterlogging the campfire, and a splash water bottle. Bedrock Edition also accepts water placed or flowing above the campfire. The table shows what each method needs and where it can be performed.

| Method | Required item or action | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | Direction or position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shovel | Use a shovel on the lit campfire | Works | Works | Direct interaction with the campfire; Java cannot use the bottom face |
| Waterlogging | Place water in the same block space as the campfire | Works | Works | Water occupies the campfire’s block space |
| Splash water bottle | Throw a splash water bottle at the campfire | Works | Works | Throw the bottle so its splash reaches the campfire |
| Water above or flowing into the space above | Place a water source above the campfire or allow water to flow into that space | Not available as the Bedrock method described here | Works | Water reaches the space immediately above the campfire |
| Rain | Wait for weather | Does not work | Does not work | Natural rain has no extinguishing effect |
If you have a shovel ready, it is normally the quickest option because it requires no water placement or projectile throw. Waterlogging is useful when you already have a water source and want to extinguish the block directly. A splash bottle is a convenient alternative when placing water would disrupt nearby construction.
How do I use a shovel to extinguish a campfire?
Select any shovel in your hotbar and use the shovel on the lit campfire. The campfire goes out while the block remains in place. This is the simplest direct interaction in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

- Move close enough to target the campfire block.
- Select a shovel.
- Use the shovel on the campfire, using your platform’s normal interact or use control.
- Confirm that the flames disappear before moving away or placing another block.
The interaction must target the campfire itself. In Java Edition, the bottom face has a limitation: the campfire cannot be extinguished by interacting from underneath. If you are below a raised campfire, move to a side or another accessible face instead of repeatedly trying the underside. Bedrock Edition also supports the shovel method, and its additional above-water method does not replace this direct option.
A shovel is an in-game tool, not a real-world safety requirement. The action does not require a bucket, a water bottle, or a separate fire-related item. If the shovel attempt appears to do nothing, check that the tool is actually selected, that the target outline is on the campfire rather than an adjacent block, and that you are not trying through the Java bottom face.
Can I use water on a Minecraft campfire?
Yes. Water can extinguish a campfire by occupying the same block space. This is called waterlogging: place water where the campfire is rather than merely near it.
- Position a water source so you can target the campfire’s block space.
- Place the water in that same space.
- Verify that the campfire is no longer lit.
- Remove or redirect the water if it is affecting nearby builds.
The important distinction is placement. Pouring water beside the campfire may leave the fire burning if the water does not occupy the campfire’s space. In Java Edition, do not depend on reaching the block through its bottom face; the edition-specific bottom-face limitation still applies to extinguishing. Waterlogging is available in both Java and Bedrock when the water is placed correctly.
Bedrock Edition provides another water arrangement. You can place a water source above the campfire, or allow water to flow into the space above it, and the campfire will be extinguished. That above-space behavior is an edition-specific Bedrock option, so a Java player should use the shovel, same-space waterlogging, or a splash water bottle instead.
How does a splash water bottle put out a campfire?
A splash water bottle extinguishes the campfire when its splash reaches the block. This method works in Java and Bedrock Edition and avoids placing a flowing water source in the build.

- Put a splash water bottle in your selected hotbar slot.
- Aim at the campfire from a position where the bottle can reach it.
- Throw the bottle so the splash overlaps the campfire block.
- Check for the extinguished state before throwing another bottle.
The bottle is a thrown alternative to direct shovel use and waterlogging. It can be practical when the campfire is surrounded by blocks, when you do not want water to spread, or when the accessible face makes a shovel interaction awkward. In Java, it also avoids the bottom-face problem as long as the splash can reach the campfire from another angle.
If the fire remains lit, the projectile may have landed outside the block or behind an obstruction. Reposition, aim at the center of the campfire, and throw again only after confirming that the first splash did not reach it.
What is different between Java and Bedrock Edition?
The core three methods are shared by both editions, but Bedrock accepts water from above and Java has a bottom-face limitation. Edition matters most when the campfire is built into a floor, ceiling, platform, or other structure that restricts access.

- Waterlog the campfire by placing water in its block space.
- Throw a splash water bottle at it.
- Do not expect a bottom-face interaction to extinguish it.
For a campfire mounted above you, approach from the side or use a splash bottle. If the block is enclosed so that neither a side interaction nor a reachable splash is possible, temporarily change your position or the surrounding build to expose a usable face.
Bedrock Edition
- The shovel, same-space waterlogging, and splash water bottle all work.
- You may place a water source above the campfire.
- You may let water flow into the space above the campfire.
These are interaction differences, not different campfire blocks. Choose the method that reaches the block without flooding a completed build. A Bedrock player can use the above-space option when the sides are blocked, while a Java player should plan for side access or use a splash bottle.
How should I identify the edition before troubleshooting?
Use the edition shown on your game installation or title screen. If a water source above the campfire fails, first check whether you are playing Java; the above-space option described for this situation is a Bedrock behavior. If an interaction from underneath fails in Java, that result is expected rather than evidence that the campfire is bugged.

Why won’t rain put out my campfire?
Rain does not extinguish a Minecraft campfire. A campfire can remain lit during rainy weather, so waiting for a storm is not a solution in either Java or Bedrock Edition.
Use one of the deliberate methods instead: a shovel, water in the campfire’s block space, or a splash water bottle. Bedrock players can also use water above the block or allow it to flow into the space above. Weather changes the environment around the campfire but does not perform the extinguishing interaction.
This explains a common troubleshooting mistake: if the flames remain visible during rainfall, nothing is wrong with the campfire. The rain simply has no extinguishing effect, and additional waiting will not change the result.
What happens to food that is cooking when the fire goes out?
Extinguishing a campfire changes the cooking process. When food is still cooking at the moment the campfire is extinguished, its remaining cooking time counts back up instead of continuing at the normal rate. Do not assume that putting out the flames preserves the exact progress already made.
Plan the timing of an extinguish if the food matters. If you need the items cooked, leave the campfire lit until the cooking is complete, or relight it and allow the remaining time to run again. If the campfire is part of a temporary kitchen, extinguish it only after removing food that is ready and checking the items that still have time remaining.

Extinguishing and breaking are separate actions. Extinguishing changes the campfire’s lit state while leaving the block in place; breaking the block produces a different result for food that has not finished cooking.

What is the safest method for different campfire layouts?
Choose the method based on access and on whether spreading water would disturb the build. A small decision process prevents most failed attempts.
- Have a shovel and a reachable face? Use the shovel first. It is the direct option and does not require placing or throwing water.
- Need to avoid a projectile? Waterlog the campfire by placing water in its own block space. Remove or redirect the water afterward if it is not part of the design.
- Cannot safely place water nearby? Throw a splash water bottle so the splash reaches the block.
- Playing Bedrock with the sides blocked? Place a water source above the campfire or let water flow into the space above it.
- Waiting for weather? Stop waiting; rain cannot extinguish the campfire.
For Java constructions, include a side access point or keep splash-bottle access in mind when building a campfire into a floor or ceiling. For Bedrock constructions, above-space water gives you an additional way to reach a concealed campfire, but it may still affect surrounding blocks through water flow.

Soul campfires use the same shovel, waterlogging, and splash-water-bottle methods as ordinary campfires. Select a shovel and use it on the soul campfire, place water in its block space, or throw a splash water bottle so the splash reaches it.
Bedrock Edition also supports placing water above a soul campfire or allowing water to flow into the space above it. Java Edition retains the bottom-face limitation, so an interaction from underneath is not the solution there.
Rain does not extinguish a soul campfire either. Treat the blue-flame variant as requiring an intentional interaction rather than relying on weather.

- Confirm the target: Make sure the interaction outline or splash is on the campfire block, not a neighboring slab, trapdoor, or surrounding block.
- Check the selected item: A shovel must be selected for the shovel method, and the thrown method requires a splash water bottle rather than simply holding a bottle.
- Use the correct water position: Same-space waterlogging requires water in the campfire’s block space. Water merely beside it may not extinguish it.
- Account for Java’s underside limitation: Move to a side or use a reachable splash bottle if you are below the block.
- Apply the Bedrock-only above option correctly: Place the source above the campfire or let water flow into the space above it; this is not the Java fallback.
- Do not wait for rain: Weather will not change the campfire’s lit state.
- Inspect cooking items: If the fire went out but food seems stalled, remember that its remaining cooking time counts back up while extinguished.
If none of these checks resolves the problem, expose another face of the campfire by moving yourself or temporarily adjusting nearby blocks, then use the shovel, waterlogging, or splash method again. Avoid breaking the campfire until you have dealt with any food still on it.
How many foods can a campfire cook, and how long does it take?
The Minecraft Wiki describes a campfire as having four food slots and a 30-second cooking time. Those figures are recorded from the Minecraft Wiki page accessed in 2026; the page’s publication year is not stated. They are useful for planning, but they do not change the extinguishing methods above.
Because extinguishing makes the remaining cooking time count back up, stopping a campfire near the end of a cooking cycle can delay the meal rather than merely pausing it. If you are managing all four slots, inspect the campfire before putting it out and remove finished food first.
Should I extinguish or break the campfire?
Use an extinguishing method when you want the campfire block to stay in the build. Breaking it is a separate choice with a consequence for unfinished food: items cooking on a campfire drop if the campfire block is broken.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters during relocation or construction. Extinguish first when the campfire is part of a permanent hearth, or collect the cooking items before breaking the block if you intend to move it. Do not treat breaking as a stronger version of the shovel or water methods; it changes the block and handles the food differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I extinguish a campfire from underneath in Java Edition?
No. Java Edition has a bottom-face limitation, so an interaction from directly below will not put out the campfire. Reach a side or use a splash water bottle that can hit the block instead.
Does breaking a campfire drop food that is still cooking?
Yes. Breaking the campfire block causes items cooking on it to drop. Extinguishing it is the better choice when you want to keep the block and avoid that break-related result.
How many items can a Minecraft campfire cook at once?
The Minecraft Wiki describes four food slots and a 30-second cooking time. The page was accessed in 2026, and its publication year is not stated.

Will rain extinguish a soul campfire?
No. Rain does not extinguish soul campfires, just as it does not extinguish ordinary campfires. Use a shovel, waterlogging, or a splash water bottle; Bedrock also permits water above the block.
