100% completion in Super Mario Sunshine means 120 Shine Sprites and all 240 blue coins. The 120 Shines are made from 77 rewards in the seven main worlds, 19 outside those worlds, and 24 Shines purchased with blue coins. The blue-coin total breaks down into 210 across the seven courses, 19 in Delfino Plaza, one in Delfino Airstrip, and 10 in Corona Mountain. This guide gives you a route that minimizes backtracking, explains the Yoshi, Turbo and Rocket unlocks, and provides a way to identify the final missing coin instead of repeating every episode at random.

What counts as 100% in Super Mario Sunshine?

A completed save has two separate collectible goals: 120 Shine Sprites and 240 blue coins. Blue coins are also a currency: every 10 exchanged at the Raccoon in the Delfino Plaza boathouse buys one Shine. Those 24 exchange rewards are already included in the 120 total, not added on top of it. The complete arithmetic is documented in the 120-Shine checklist.

Shine source Count How it is earned
Seven main worlds 77 Eight episode rewards, two secret rewards and one 100-yellow-coin reward in each world
Delfino Plaza 15 direct Shines Plaza puzzles, events and hidden rewards
Delfino Airstrip 2 Airstrip rewards after the return trip is available
Plaza/Airstrip shared 100-coin Shine 1 Collect 100 yellow coins during one uninterrupted visit across the connected task
Blue-coin exchanges 24 Ten blue coins per Shine at the Plaza boathouse
Corona Mountain finale 1 Clear the final boss
Total 120

For blue coins, the geographic ledger is seven courses × 30 (210), Delfino Plaza (19), Delfino Airstrip (one), and Corona Mountain (10), for 240. Some checklists label the Plaza and Airstrip together as 20; that is the same total, not an extra coin set. The area totals shown on the game’s overview map are the best way to confirm which region still has an uncollected coin.

How are the 77 main-world Shines organized?

Each of the seven courses follows the same 11-Shine pattern: eight numbered episode rewards, two additional secret-course rewards and one 100-yellow-coin Shine. The worlds are Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, Pinna Park, Sirena Beach, Noki Bay and Pianta Village.

The 14 secret Shines are separate from the eight episode rewards. A secret revisit often contains a red switch and a timed eight-red-coin run, but that is not universal. For episode-by-episode locations, use the secret-Shine guide rather than assuming every world uses the same trigger.

What is the least wasteful route to 120 Shines?

Work through the worlds in normal progression, but postpone exhaustive cleanup until the movement abilities and return trips are available. Keep separate marks for episode rewards, secret rewards, 100-coin attempts and blue coins; combining them into one undifferentiated checklist makes it easy to repeat a completed task.

  1. Clear Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach and Pinna Park. Record all eight episode Shines in each course, then return for the two secrets and the 100-coin Shine. Pick up obvious blue coins while progressing, but do not restart a world repeatedly for one coin that requires Yoshi or a different episode.
  2. Complete Pinna Park Episode 4. This starts the Yoshi sequence. Chase Shadow Mario carrying the egg in Delfino Plaza and feed the egg the fruit shown in its thought bubble. Yoshi’s juice dissolves pineapple blocks, including the obstruction at the Sirena Beach entrance. The sequence and fruit behavior are summarized in the Yoshi guide.
  3. Unlock Turbo, then Rocket. With Yoshi unlocked and at least 25 Shines on the save, defeat the Plaza Shadow Mario carrying Turbo. After the save reaches at least 30 Shines, defeat the Shadow Mario carrying Rocket. Turbo opens marked doors and provides fast movement; Rocket supplies the charged vertical launch used for high ledges and the intended Pianta Village entrance. The thresholds and events are listed in the FLUDD nozzle unlock guide.
  4. Finish Sirena Beach, Noki Bay and Pianta Village. Continue the eight-episode progression in each, while revisiting earlier worlds when a nozzle or Yoshi is now required. Pianta Village is much less frustrating once Rocket is available.
  5. Clear Shadow Mario’s Episode 7 in all seven worlds. Corona Mountain does not open just because the Shine counter is high. Every main-world Episode 7 must be completed; the seven clears are the actual gate, as explained in the world-unlock guide.
  6. Finish Corona Mountain. Collect its 10 blue coins during a dedicated sweep and defeat the final boss for the last story Shine. This accounts for the one Corona Mountain Shine and its separate 10-coin region.
  7. Do a final Plaza and Airstrip pass. Collect the direct Plaza rewards, return to Delfino Airstrip for its late rewards and remaining blue coin, and complete the shared Plaza/Airstrip 100-coin task. Exchange every group of 10 blue coins at the Plaza boathouse.

How do I unlock Yoshi, Turbo and Rocket?

Yoshi comes first, and the nozzle upgrades follow fixed event and Shine requirements. These are progression conditions, not optional recommendations.

Yoshi

Finish Pinna Park Episode 4, then pursue the egg-carrying Shadow Mario in Delfino Plaza. Give the egg the fruit it displays. Once hatched, Yoshi can eat enemies and produce juice; the juice is needed to remove pineapple barriers and reach several otherwise inaccessible collectibles.

Turbo Nozzle

After Yoshi is available and the save has at least 25 Shines, defeat the Plaza Shadow Mario carrying Turbo. Turbo is a temporary nozzle pickup that replaces Hover in FLUDD’s secondary slot. It enables a powerful dash on land and water, and it opens doors marked for Turbo.

Rocket Nozzle

At 30 or more Shines, defeat the Plaza Shadow Mario carrying Rocket. Rocket also replaces Hover in the secondary slot. Charge it until FLUDD signals that it is ready, then release to launch vertically. Rocket is the intended way to reach several high platforms and the main entrance route into Pianta Village.

How does FLUDD’s nozzle system actually work?

FLUDD always retains Squirt, while only one secondary nozzle is equipped at a time. The original Nintendo of America GameCube booklet states, “The Squirt Nozzle never gets replaced,” and, “Upon returning to Delfino Plaza, FLUDD’s nozzle inventory reverts to the Squirt and Hover Nozzles.” The scan is available at manuals.plus.

  • Squirt: the permanent spray used to clean goop, activate mechanisms and reveal certain objects.
  • Hover: the default secondary nozzle, giving Mario a short, controllable glide over gaps.
  • Turbo: a dash that also functions across water and opens Turbo-marked doors.
  • Rocket: a charged vertical launch for high ledges and platforms.

Picking up Turbo or Rocket does not create three selectable secondary nozzles. It replaces Hover until you return to Delfino Plaza, where the default Squirt-and-Hover pairing is restored. Plan a collectible route around that reset: a nozzle found in one course is not carried permanently into the next.

Where are the 14 secret Shines?

Secret Shines are bonus rewards hidden in revisits to course areas, distinct from the numbered episode prizes. Enter a secret course again after its first completion; FLUDD is available on the revisit, and many challenges begin by activating a red switch and collecting eight red coins before time expires.

  • Ricco Harbor: one secret route includes a second Blooper race, so do not assume every harbor bonus is a red-coin run.
  • Gelato Beach: spray the sand in the indicated location to reveal a hidden Shine.
  • Noki Bay: watch for the golden bird associated with its bonus reward.
  • Pianta Village: a sun-image clue leads to one of the village’s hidden Shines.

Because secret triggers differ by episode, match the world and episode to the route in the bonus-Shine walkthrough. A completed numbered episode does not prove that its separate secret has been collected.

How do I earn the eight 100-yellow-coin Shines?

There are eight separate 100-coin Shines: one in each main world and one shared by Delfino Plaza and Airstrip. Yellow coins must reach 100 during one uninterrupted visit. Blue coins do not count, and leaving the area or losing a life resets that visit’s yellow-coin total.

Area Suggested farming episode
Bianco Hills Episode 8
Ricco Harbor Episode 8
Gelato Beach Episode 8
Pinna Park Episode 2
Sirena Beach Episode 4
Noki Bay Episode 6
Pianta Village Episode 5
Delfino Plaza/Airstrip Plaza and runway coin rows after the return trip is unlocked

These episodes are efficient suggestions, not exclusive requirements. Before starting, choose a route that keeps the coin supply dense, avoid risky jumps once the counter is high, and finish the Shine without exiting. The full farming notes are in the 100-coin Shine guide.

How can I track all 240 blue coins without repeating every level?

Use the game’s overview map to compare each area’s collected and total figures, then consult the episode-specific location list for only the region with a deficit. Blue coins are not episode-agnostic: some appear only after a particular event, with Yoshi, or while a specific nozzle is equipped.

Bianco Hills: an Episode 8 sweep works

The Bianco Hills checklist reports that all 30 coins can be obtained in Episode 8 once Yoshi is unlocked. The last examples include a blue butterfly and bees that require Yoshi. If the map says Bianco is short, return with Yoshi rather than searching earlier episodes blindly. The location guide is at Bianco Hills blue coins.

Ricco Harbor: do not rely on Episode 8 alone

Ricco Harbor’s guide places 26 coins in Episode 8, while four require revisiting earlier episodes. An apparently complete Episode 8 sweep therefore cannot finish the harbor ledger. Use the map total first, then check those earlier-episode locations.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Delfino Plaza and Airstrip: reserve the return trip

The Plaza/Airstrip group contains 20 coins under the combined convention, but one Airstrip coin is deliberately left for the late return and a Turbo-accessible door. If your combined total is 19, the missing coin is likely that return-trip pickup rather than a hidden Plaza coin.

Corona Mountain: a separate 10-coin run

Corona Mountain’s 10 coins are isolated from the seven 30-coin courses. Collect them while the mountain is open, because the area is tied to the final sequence and is easy to forget when checking only the main-world totals.

Exchange coins as you go

Every 10 blue coins can be traded for one Shine at the Raccoon in the Delfino Plaza boathouse. Exchange completed groups during cleanup so the coin currency and Shine total advance together; do not count the 24 exchange Shines as a second set beyond 120.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why is Corona Mountain still locked?

The lock is controlled by story progress, not by a target Shine number. You must clear Shadow Mario’s Episode 7 in all seven main worlds. If the entrance remains closed, open each course’s episode list and look specifically for an unfinished Episode 7; collecting more blue coins or buying exchange Shines will not substitute for that clear.

What should I do when one Shine or coin is missing?

  • Check the category first: separate episode, secret, 100-yellow-coin, Plaza, Airstrip, Corona and exchange Shine marks. A world total of 11 can hide a missing secret even when all eight episode icons look complete.
  • Read the overview map: compare the current blue-coin count with the area’s total before selecting an episode.
  • Check ability gates: try Yoshi for fruit, butterflies, bees and pineapple blocks; try Turbo for marked doors; try Rocket for elevated routes.
  • Revisit the correct episode: Ricco Harbor is the clearest warning that an Episode 8 sweep is not universal.
  • Check the late areas: confirm the Airstrip return coin, the Plaza/Airstrip 100-coin Shine and all 10 Corona Mountain coins.
  • Verify exchange progress: a complete 240-coin ledger still requires visiting the boathouse to convert the 24 groups into Shines.

Which version and hardware support this checklist?

The original GameCube release and the Switch compilation both contain the same Sunshine collectible structure, but they use different formats and hardware. The original disc runs on compatible GameCube hardware and uses a GameCube memory card for saves; the memory card is storage, not a nozzle accessory. The Switch compilation was released as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars on a game card in a limited retail release. Current availability, resale condition and pricing are not established here, so choose based on the hardware you already own. Background release details are summarized on the Super Mario 3D All-Stars reference page.

How we picked this route

The route prioritizes the game’s actual unlock dependencies, keeps the seven 30-coin course ledgers separate, postpones ability-gated pickups until Yoshi and the upgraded nozzles are available, and uses map totals to target missing regions. It also distinguishes episode rewards, secret rewards, 100-coin challenges, Plaza/Airstrip cleanup and blue-coin exchanges so that one collectible cannot be mistaken for another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does collecting a blue coin restore health?

Yes. The original Nintendo of America instruction booklet says, “Pick up blue coins to regain two health points.” That healing effect is separate from the 10-coin exchange system, so spending coins at the Plaza boathouse is not required to receive the immediate health recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do red coins count toward a 100-yellow-coin Shine?

No. Red-coin challenges are separate timed objectives, and their coins do not increase the yellow-coin total used for a 100-coin Shine. Blue coins are also excluded from that counter.

Can I keep Turbo or Rocket when I enter another world?

No. Turbo and Rocket occupy FLUDD’s secondary slot temporarily. Returning to Delfino Plaza restores Squirt and Hover, so plan to reacquire the required nozzle when a later route calls for it.

Why does my total stop at 119 after every course is complete?

The missing Shine is often one of the 24 blue-coin exchange rewards, a Plaza/Airstrip reward or the Corona Mountain finale. Compare the global Shine count with your blue-coin groups and verify that all seven Episode 7 clears—not merely the course episode totals—are complete.
