Don’t drop a running back just because his touches fell in one game. First confirm that his workload really changed, identify which duties shifted and who gained them, then decide whether to start, bench, hold, trade, or drop him based on the new role and your alternatives.
Confirm that the role changed—not just the fantasy score
Compare the player’s recent workload with his earlier baseline. A low-scoring game can come from poor efficiency or a missed touchdown even when the role is intact; a touchdown or long run can also disguise a shrinking workload. NFL Fantasy analyst Michael Florio summarized the forecasting principle this way: “Usage matters much more than production when trying to predict future results.” Treat that as a useful heuristic, not a guarantee that usage will always predict points.
Check several measures rather than relying on a single touch count. PFF’s fantasy usage report tracks measures including snaps, routes, targets per route run, carry share, red-zone usage, and situational splits.
- Snaps: Is the back still on the field for a similar share of offensive plays?
- Carries: Did his share of the team’s running-back carries decline?
- Routes and targets: Has he lost passing-down work, or is he still getting chances as a receiver?
- Valuable chances: Is he still involved near the goal line or in other red-zone situations?
Pinpoint which work moved—and who got it
“Fewer touches” can describe very different changes. A back might lose early-down carries but keep his routes and targets, or retain ordinary carries while another player takes passing-down work and goal-line chances. Those roles matter differently across scoring formats: lost targets are more damaging in PPR leagues, while fewer goal-line opportunities can remove a source of touchdown upside.

Compare the affected back directly with the teammate receiving the opportunities. NFL Fantasy’s historical start/sit analysis considers passing-down and goal-line roles alongside other factors, while PFF tracks distinct usage categories. Neither an overall touch total nor one box-score line tells the whole story.
Check whether the shift is temporary or likely to last
Before treating one game as the new normal, look for reasons the workload might have changed: an injury or return from injury, a teammate’s arrival or return, a changing committee, the game’s script, or the matchup. A back may see fewer carries while his team trails, for example, without losing his place in the offense. Updated practice and availability reports can clarify whether a change is tied to health.

The evidence in a single game may not distinguish a lasting role change from a short-term adjustment. If the shift is recent, has a plausible temporary explanation, and you have a viable lineup alternative, it can be sensible to wait for more usage evidence rather than make an irreversible roster move.
Choose the move that fits your league and roster
There is no universal touch threshold that makes a back an automatic start, drop, or trade. Consider the player’s new workload, your scoring rules, roster depth, available replacements, and the other managers in your league.

| Start | Whether the player still has a useful share of snaps, carries, routes, targets, or goal-line work relative to your other options; also consider matchup and expected game script. |
| Bench | Whether a teammate has taken the most valuable work and you have a safer alternative. A reduced role can still be worth holding even if it makes the player a poor start this week. |
| Hold | Whether the change could be temporary, the player retains a meaningful role, or the available replacements offer less value. |
| Trade | Whether another manager values the player differently and whether a deal improves your roster. Judge the likely future role, not only the latest score. |
| Drop | Whether the remaining role and upside are less valuable than a specific waiver option you can add. Do not drop solely because one game’s touches fell. |
When comparing a waiver replacement or teammate, weigh expected snaps and carry share, routes and targets (especially in PPR), goal-line and red-zone access, the stability of the role, matchup and likely game script, and the value of the player you would have to give up or cut. NFL Fantasy’s historical recommendations combine role with matchup rather than treating one touch count as decisive.

Update the comparison after each game and check current injury and availability news. Historical examples show why the categories matter, but they are not current recommendations: NFL Fantasy reported in 2025 that Woody Marks played 73 percent of Houston’s snaps over the two weeks discussed, received 80 percent of the team’s running-back carries, and half of its running-back targets; in a separate example, it described Kenneth Walker III playing 51 percent of Seattle’s snaps and having 16 carries to Zach Charbonnet’s 11 in the preceding game. These dated figures illustrate different kinds of workload evidence and say nothing about current roles or another player’s future usage.
