Compatibility is decided game by game. Hardware changes can affect launch, progression, controllers, and accessories; selected games have free enhancements or optional paid upgrades.
Before buying or transferring a game, check its current Nintendo game page or eShop listing, then consult the publisher for third-party software. Nintendo’s general compatibility information is dated June 5, 2025, while title pages can reflect newer fixes and requirements.

What “compatible” means on Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo’s official position is deliberately qualified: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” In practice, a game can fall into several different states:
- Starts and plays normally: the core software runs, although it may not receive any Switch 2-specific visual or performance benefit.
- Starts with a limitation: the main game works, but a mode, controller feature, accessory, or physical fit does not.
- Starts with a known issue: progression, loading, or an in-game function can fail until a title update is installed, or may remain affected.
- Cannot start: Nintendo has identified software that is unusable on Switch 2.
Those categories are not permanent labels. Nintendo maintains separate lists for startup and progression problems and for issues fixed or expected to be fixed by updates. A dated list is therefore a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee for every edition or patch.
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Physical cards and digital purchases
Physical Nintendo Switch game cards
Insert a compatible Nintendo Switch game card into the Switch 2 card slot and launch it normally. Physical ownership does not override a title-specific restriction: a card can still be listed as unable to start, or it can require an original controller for a particular mode. Keep the game card available whenever the title requires it; compatibility does not convert a physical license into a digital copy.
Digital Nintendo Switch games
Nintendo’s transfer guidance says that, after you link the Nintendo Account that owns the software, your digital Switch purchases can be downloaded and played on Switch 2. The account link is essential: signing in with a different account will not make that account’s purchases appear in your library.
Digital access and compatibility are separate questions. A game can download successfully yet have a mode that needs an original Joy-Con, a known progression problem, or no Switch 2 support at all. Check the individual listing before spending time on a large download.
How to check a game before you buy or transfer it
- Identify the exact software. Record the title, edition, region, and whether you are using a physical card or a digital purchase. Bundles, subscription versions, and demos can have different listings.
- Open Nintendo’s current compatibility page. Use the title search and read whether the game is compatible, unable to start, or affected by a listed issue. Nintendo labels the general testing information as current as of June 5, 2025, so do not treat that date as the latest possible fix.
- Open the game’s own Nintendo page or eShop entry. Nintendo directs owners to title-level information for the latest status. Look for a Switch 2 compatibility note, update requirement, enhancement description, or warning about a mode.
- Check controller and accessory requirements. A game may work generally while one feature requires an original right Joy-Con, a Ring-Con, a leg strap, or another physical accessory that does not fit the new hardware.
- Check the publisher for third-party games. Nintendo specifically recommends contacting the software publisher for detailed information about games it did not publish. Publisher notices can explain a patch schedule or a problem not yet reflected in a general list.
- Install available software updates before judging the result. Updates can change startup, progression, frame rate, visuals, or feature support. Record the game version if you need to report a continuing problem.
This process is more reliable than assuming that a game’s age, cartridge format, or popularity predicts its Switch 2 behavior.
Compatibility is not the same as a Switch 2 enhancement
A compatible Switch game does not automatically become a remastered or optimized version. Some titles simply run as they did on Switch. Others receive a free update, while some offer a separate paid upgrade with additional content or performance improvements. Nintendo states on its update page that “The contents of these free updates will differ depending on the game.”
| Game | Update listing | Listed Switch 2 changes |
|---|---|---|
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Available January 15, 2026 | Visual optimization |
| Donkey Kong Country Returns HD | Available January 20, 2026 | Visual optimization and local GameShare support |
| Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet | Available June 5, 2025 | Visual and frame-rate improvements |
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Available September 1, 2026 | Visual improvements, faster loading, expanded local multiplayer, and CameraPlay support subject to Nintendo’s stated conditions |
The dates above are availability dates in Nintendo’s selected-game list, not a schedule for the entire Switch library. A free update is not required for every compatible game, and the presence of an update does not imply that other titles are broken without one.
Paid upgrades
Some games also sell a paid Switch 2 upgrade. Eligibility, included content, and price are title-specific; Nintendo does not publish one universal upgrade fee. Read the current eShop or game-page description for the exact edition you own before paying. Do not buy an upgrade merely because a game is compatible—the base version may already run without it.

Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot be used for certain older features. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the console. Charging them requires a Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging accessory. The requirement may apply to one activity rather than the whole game.
Ring Fit Adventure
Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit in the leg strap. Use an original Switch Joy-Con attached to those accessories if you want the exercise modes to function as designed.
1-2-Switch
Joy-Con 2 lack the original Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera. Modes that use infrared require an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly.
Game Builder Garage
The IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming require an original right Joy-Con. Other programming activities are not automatically ruled out, so check the specific feature you plan to use.

Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap used for Soccer Shoot-Out. An original Joy-Con is required for that activity.

WarioWare: Move It!
Microgames that depend on the IR camera require an original right Joy-Con. The need is feature-specific rather than a blanket statement that the entire game cannot run.
Everybody 1-2-Switch!
Reduced Joy-Con 2 force-feedback vibration can make hidden-controller play in Joy-Con Hide & Seek more difficult. The software can still be usable, but the intended feedback is limited.
Nintendo Labo
Physical Toy-Con fit is a separate compatibility problem. Switch 2 cannot be inserted into the VR Goggles for Toy-Con 04, and the console does not fit some Toy-Con 01 accessories. The Toy-Con 02 Robot accessory cannot attach to Joy-Con 2, although original Joy-Con can be used. Measure the actual console and accessory arrangement rather than assuming that a cardboard kit will accommodate the new system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSoftware that cannot be used and software with known issues
Unusable software
Nintendo lists Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because the Switch 2 console cannot be inserted into its Toy-Con VR Goggles. The same compatibility page lists applications including Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen as unusable. Those application entries should not be confused with the compatibility of retail game cards.
Startup and progression problems
Nintendo links separate official documents for games that cannot start or cannot progress correctly, along with documents for problems fixed or expected to be fixed by an update. Because patches and publisher fixes change the result, use the live compatibility page and the game publisher’s current support notice instead of relying on an old screenshot, forum post, or an undated list.
If a game launches but your save cannot advance, treat that as a compatibility issue even if the title is technically marked “playable.” Note the exact mode, point in the story, software version, and whether the problem occurs on a physical or digital copy when contacting support.

Controller, accessory, and storage checks
Original Joy-Con are a targeted solution
Buying original Joy-Con makes sense only when the game or accessory explicitly needs IR hardware, the original force-feedback behavior, or a physical fit that Joy-Con 2 lacks. They pair wirelessly and cannot attach to Switch 2 rails, so plan for separate charging. They are not a general fix for a game that Nintendo lists as unable to start.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →microSD Express is for storage, not compatibility
Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for storage expansion and does not support conventional Switch microSD cards as storage for Switch 2 games. Existing conventional cards can be used only to view Switch-captured screenshots and videos. More storage can help a digital library download, but it cannot repair a title-specific startup, controller, or progression problem.
What to do when a compatible game fails
The game will not start
- Confirm the exact title and edition on Nintendo’s current compatibility page.
- Install any available game update and restart the console.
- For a card, remove and reinsert it, then check whether the listing identifies the software as unusable.
- For a digital copy, verify that the Nintendo Account that owns it is linked to Switch 2.
- If Nintendo lists no current explanation, contact the third-party publisher for a title-specific status.
The game starts but a mode or feature is missing
- Check whether the mode uses an IR Motion Camera, special vibration, a leg strap, Ring-Con, VR Goggles, or another physical accessory.
- Pair an original Joy-Con wirelessly if the title requires one; remember that it cannot attach to Switch 2.
- Read the game’s update description to distinguish a missing feature from an enhancement that was never promised.
Progress stops or a save becomes unusable
- Look at Nintendo’s current startup and progression-issue document.
- Install the publisher’s latest patch and review its release notes.
- Keep the error location and software version ready for Nintendo or publisher support; do not assume that reinstalling storage will fix a software defect.
How current are Nintendo’s compatibility lists?
The general compatibility status on Nintendo’s US page is explicitly dated June 5, 2025, even though the page directs readers to individual game pages and the eShop for newer information. The free-update list accessed through September 2026 includes title-specific changes, illustrating how quickly status can evolve. Compatibility testing, game patches, and publisher support are therefore time-sensitive.
Use the dated general list to understand the categories, then make the final decision from the current title listing. Recheck before buying used hardware, importing a regional edition, or purchasing an accessory for one particular mode.
A practical decision checklist
- Want to play a physical Switch game? Insert the card only after checking its title-level compatibility and any accessory warning.
- Own a digital game? Link the purchasing Nintendo Account, download it, and check the current eShop entry for updates or upgrades.
- Need a Switch 2 visual or performance boost? Look for a listed free update or paid upgrade; compatibility alone does not promise one.
- Use exercise, IR, camera, vibration, VR, or Toy-Con features? Verify the exact hardware requirement and keep original Joy-Con if Nintendo specifies them.
- Buying a third-party title? Check Nintendo’s listing and the publisher’s support page, because publisher information can be newer or more specific.
The safest conclusion is title-specific: Switch 2 is broadly compatible with Switch software in both physical and digital formats, but “compatible” can mean anything from unchanged play to a feature-limited mode, an update-dependent fix, or no support at all.
