Start with the affected game’s update and graphics settings, then verify VRR on both the PS5 and the display. If the symptom is a missing, flickering or downgraded 4K/120 Hz signal rather than uneven game motion, troubleshoot the HDMI path instead. No single setting, cable or monitor is guaranteed to cure every form of stutter.
First identify what feels “stuttery”
“Stutter” is used for several different problems. Correct diagnosis matters because a frame-time spike inside one game needs a different response from a flickering HDMI signal or a delay caused by an online connection.

| What you see | Likely category | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Camera motion is uneven in one game or one demanding scene, even though the picture remains stable | Game rendering or frame pacing | Update the game, compare its graphics modes, then test VRR |
| Horizontal tearing during movement | Refresh-rate and frame-output mismatch | Confirm that VRR is supported and enabled on the display and PS5 |
| The picture flickers, blanks out, loses 4K, or falls back from 120 Hz | HDMI signal or display-output problem | Check the display mode, firmware, HDMI port, direct connection and cable |
| Inputs or opponents appear delayed only during online play | Network or game-server latency | Investigate the game’s connection separately; the official VRR guidance does not establish that network lag causes local frame-pacing spikes |
VRR can make uneven delivery look smoother by allowing a compatible display to follow the PS5’s changing output. It cannot make a game render every frame on time, and it cannot repair an unstable HDMI connection.

- Update the game and PS5 system software. Highlight the game or app on the home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. For the console, open Settings > System > System Software and check for an update. An update may address a title-specific issue, but Sony does not promise that every update will improve frame pacing.
- Reproduce the problem in a controlled scene. Use the same level, camera movement or area before and after each change. Note whether the issue occurs only in one title, only in a particular graphics mode, or across several games. This prevents a display-output change from being mistaken for an engine fix.
- Compare the game’s own graphics modes. If the title offers a performance, frame-rate, quality or similar option, test the available modes in the affected scene. Treat this as a game-specific diagnostic, not a universal Sony recommendation: mode names and behavior differ by title, and no mode guarantees smooth delivery without evidence for that game.
- Verify VRR compatibility and enable it deliberately. Check the exact television or monitor model and the HDMI input used by the PS5. The display must support HDMI 2.1 VRR for the PS5’s VRR feature. On the console, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR and enable it when the display is compatible.
- Test “Apply to Unsupported Games” only as an experiment. This optional VRR setting can sometimes stabilize the presentation of games without native VRR support. If the game shows unexpected behavior, turn the option off. It is not a guaranteed fix and should not be left enabled simply because VRR is available.
- Check 120 Hz only when both the game and display support it. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, 120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz output for compatible games and displays. If those games create video-output problems on a monitor or other display, Sony advises turning the setting off. A 120 Hz signal does not by itself force a game to render at 120 frames per second.
- Separate frame pacing from the HDMI signal. If the symptom is a missing, flickering or downgraded high-refresh signal, follow the signal checks below rather than changing game modes repeatedly.
- Escalate a persistent title-specific fault. After updates and a controlled settings test, record the title, scene, console software version, display model, HDMI input and whether VRR changes the symptom. Contact the game’s publisher or PlayStation Support when one game remains uneven.
Why VRR can help—and where it stops
What VRR does
Variable refresh rate synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh timing with the graphical output from the PS5. When a game’s frame times vary within the display’s supported VRR range, the screen can update at intervals that better match those frames. Sony describes VRR as a way to minimize or eliminate frame-pacing artifacts and screen tearing on compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR televisions and monitors.

What VRR cannot do
- It does not increase the game’s internal rendering capability or turn a 30-frame-per-second mode into a 60- or 120-frame-per-second mode.
- It cannot correct a game engine’s severe or prolonged frame-time spikes.
- It does not make every title compatible. Some games need a patch for full VRR optimization.
- It does not guarantee the same result on every television or monitor. Sony explicitly says results vary by display and game.
- It cannot repair a cable, HDMI port or intermediary device that is dropping the signal.
How to test it without guessing
Enable VRR, restart the affected game if necessary, and repeat the same camera movement or scene with the same graphics mode. Then disable VRR and repeat it. Look for changes in perceived smoothness, tearing, flicker, black screens or other behavior. If the optional unsupported-games setting is enabled and the title behaves worse, disable that option before drawing conclusions.
Check the PS5’s 120 Hz and video-output settings
120 Hz output is a compatibility feature, not a universal performance switch. The game must support a high-refresh mode, the display must accept it on the specific HDMI input, and the connection must carry the required signal.
When to leave 120 Hz Output enabled
Use it when the display and the affected games are known to support 120 Hz and the image remains stable. Confirm the result in the display’s information panel or on-screen status indicator rather than assuming the console is actually outputting 120 Hz.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to disable it
Turn 120 Hz Output off if compatible games cause blanking, flicker, loss of picture or other output problems. This is a signal-stability troubleshooting step; it does not diagnose an engine-level stutter that occurs while the image remains locked.

Resolution and transfer-rate checks
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, inspect the current resolution and transfer-rate options when troubleshooting 4K/120 Hz. Sony’s display-output guidance includes checking that the selected mode is supported by the display and that the transfer-rate setting is appropriate. If lowering the output mode removes blanking or flicker, the result points toward the signal path or display compatibility rather than proving that the game’s frame pacing has improved.
Fix a missing, flickering or downgraded 4K/120 Hz signal
1. Confirm the display and the exact HDMI input
Read the display manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and input. Some displays support high-refresh 4K or VRR on only one or a subset of their HDMI ports. Make sure the PS5 is connected to an input that supports the mode you are trying to use.
2. Update the display firmware
Install the current firmware offered by the display manufacturer before judging compatibility. Firmware can affect HDMI, VRR and high-refresh behavior. Follow the manufacturer’s update procedure and retest the same game and output mode afterward.

3. Remove avoidable intermediary devices
Connect the PS5 directly to the compatible television or monitor while testing. Soundbars, receivers, HDMI switches and capture devices can impose their own limits or create handshake problems. If direct connection restores the signal, add intermediary equipment back one component at a time and verify which device changes the result.

4. Inspect the cable and its rating
Start with the cable included with the PS5. If a replacement is needed for a 4K/120 Hz signal, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable replacement is justified when the signal path requires it; it is not a general treatment for game-engine stutter or uneven frame delivery.
5. Recheck output settings
With the PS5 connected directly, confirm the display’s supported resolution, refresh mode and VRR capability, then revisit Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Test 120 Hz Output on and off, and use an appropriate transfer-rate option. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affects stability.
Choosing or evaluating a display for smoother PS5 output
If you are replacing a display, do not rely on a generic “gaming” label. Evaluate the complete signal path and the games you actually play.

|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.1 VRR support | Does the exact model support PS5-compatible VRR, and on which input? | VRR depends on both console support and the display’s compatible HDMI implementation. |
| Resolution and refresh modes | Does the exact HDMI input accept the desired 4K and high-refresh combinations? | A display may advertise a mode that is limited to a particular port or condition. |
| Game compatibility | Does the title support VRR natively, or does it need a patch? | Sony says game optimization affects results; unsupported-game VRR is only an optional experiment. |
| Firmware and manufacturer notes | Is current firmware required, and are there known compatibility notes? | Firmware can change HDMI handshake, VRR and high-refresh behavior. |
| Direct connection | Can the PS5 connect directly to a suitable input? | Intermediary devices can limit or disrupt the signal. |
These checks are more useful than assuming a more expensive display or cable will remove every form of stutter. Sony’s guidance cautions that VRR results vary by display and game.

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
Assuming every choppy scene is a network problem
Online delay can make controls or opponents feel late, but the official material covered here does not establish that network lag causes local frame-pacing spikes. Compare the same local scene, replay or offline mode when possible before changing network equipment.
Leaving “Apply to Unsupported Games” on after a bad result
Because the setting can produce unexpected behavior in some titles, turn it off when the picture becomes unstable or the game behaves abnormally. Its presence in the menu is not evidence that it is appropriate for every game.
Confusing a 120 Hz output with a 120-frame-per-second game
The console can output a 120 Hz signal when the game and display support it, but the game’s own rendering mode determines how many frames it produces. A higher refresh output alone does not create additional frames.
Buying a premium cable before checking the port and firmware
A cable cannot compensate for an HDMI input that does not support the required mode, outdated display firmware or an intermediary device that limits bandwidth. Check those conditions first, and replace the cable only when the signal path calls for an Ultra High-Speed rating.

Changing several settings at once
Switching graphics mode, VRR, 120 Hz Output, resolution and transfer rate together makes the result impossible to interpret. Keep a short test log and alter one variable per run.
When the remaining stutter is probably title-specific
If the console software and game are current, the display signal is stable, and the same title still shows uneven motion in a repeatable scene, the cause may be inside that game’s rendering or frame-time behavior. VRR may reduce visible artifacts, but it cannot guarantee a uniform frame cadence. Record the evidence rather than repeatedly buying accessories:
- Game title and installed update version.
- The exact area, mission, camera movement or effect that triggers the issue.
- Whether the problem appears in each available graphics mode.
- Display model, HDMI input, firmware status and whether the PS5 is directly connected.
- VRR and 120 Hz Output states, including what changes when each is disabled.
- Whether the symptom is uneven motion, tearing, flicker, blanking or input delay.
Give that record to the game’s publisher or PlayStation Support. The official guidance does not identify a universal setting that fixes title-specific frame-time spikes.
Quick decision checklist
- Uneven motion in one title: update the game, compare its own graphics modes, then test VRR.
- Tearing with a stable signal: verify HDMI 2.1 VRR support on the exact display input and enable VRR at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > VRR.
- Flicker, blanking or lost 4K/120 Hz: update display firmware, use the correct HDMI port, connect directly, check resolution and transfer rate, and test 120 Hz Output off.
- Unsupported-game VRR experiment: keep it only if behavior is stable; disable it when unexpected behavior appears.
- Suspected cable fault: begin with the included cable; use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz only when the signal requirement warrants replacement.
- Persistent issue after controlled tests: document the title and scene and contact the publisher or PlayStation Support.
What the official guidance establishes
Sony’s PS5 support guidance covers the update paths, VRR and 120 Hz settings, display compatibility and HDMI troubleshooting described above. Its March 23, 2022 PlayStation.Blog explanation says VRR can minimize or eliminate frame-pacing artifacts and tearing, while also noting that results vary by television or monitor and game, and that games may need patches for full optimization. Sony’s specific warning for the optional unsupported-games VRR setting is: “If you experience unexpected behavior while playing games, turn off this setting.”
