If a Steam game’s actual AI use appears different from what its store page disclosed, submit a refund request through Steam Help and describe the discrepancy in specific, verifiable terms. Quote or capture the disclosure, identify what the game did instead, and include when you observed it. Steam’s usual rule for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and under two hours played, but Valve says it will still review requests outside those limits. A disclosure mismatch is not an automatic refund entitlement; the decision remains case-specific.
How do I request a refund for a Steam game with an AI-disclosure discrepancy?
Use Steam’s normal purchase-support route rather than looking for a separate AI complaint form. Valve directs customers to help.steampowered.com for refunds and purchase assistance.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open Steam Help and sign in. Use the account that owns the game. If you have several accounts, confirm that the purchase appears in the selected account’s history before continuing.
- Open your purchases or purchase-support list. Select the game whose store-page disclosure appears inaccurate. Steam may show slightly different labels depending on whether you start in a browser or from the Steam client.
- Choose the refund or purchase-assistance option. Follow the prompts for the selected transaction. The AI issue belongs in the explanation field; it does not require a special category.
- State the discrepancy in one factual paragraph. Identify the exact wording on the store page, the content or behavior you encountered in the game, and when and where you encountered it.
- Add relevant timing information. Give the purchase date and approximate playtime, especially if either is close to Steam’s normal limits. If you continued playing to verify the issue, say so without exaggerating.
- Attach or preserve supporting material if the form permits it. A screenshot or saved copy of the disclosure, a screenshot of the in-game result, and a short video can help establish what you saw. Do not edit evidence in a way that removes dates, menus, or other context.
- Submit the request and keep the confirmation. Save the case number or confirmation email so you can identify the transaction if Steam asks a follow-up question.
Keep the request focused on the purchase and the factual difference between the disclosure and the product. A long argument about artificial intelligence policy is less useful than a clear description that a reviewer can check against the store page and build.
A concise example
You could write: “The store page says the game contains no AI-generated content. During the chapter titled ‘_____’, the game generated new dialogue in response to my typed prompts, rather than using fixed lines. I purchased it on [date] and observed this after [approximately] minutes of play. I am requesting a refund because the disclosed AI use does not match the feature I received.” Replace the brackets with your own details and quote the page verbatim rather than paraphrasing it.

What refund rule applies to games and software?
Valve’s published policy says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” For games and software, the standard conditions are a request within two weeks of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. The policy was last updated April 23, 2024, and says Steam will still consider a request that falls outside those guidelines.
| Policy point | What it means for your request |
|---|---|
| Purchase age | Submit within 14 days (two weeks) for the standard path. |
| Recorded playtime | Stay under two hours for the standard game threshold. |
| Outside either threshold | You may still submit the request; Steam says it will review it, but approval is not promised. |
| Reason for refund | Steam accepts requests for nearly any reason within the policy, so explain the disclosure mismatch plainly. |
| After approval | Steam says the refund is issued within a week, to Steam Wallet or the original payment method where supported. |
The two-hour figure is a policy threshold, not a guarantee that every request below it will be approved or that every request above it will be rejected. If you are outside the normal window, make the discrepancy and the reason for the extra playtime explicit and ask Steam to review the circumstances.

What evidence should I collect before submitting the request?
Steam does not publish an AI-specific evidence checklist. The following records make your account easier for a reviewer to verify and help you avoid an argument based only on impressions.
- The exact store disclosure. Copy the wording and save a screenshot showing the page, section heading, and game title. Record the page URL and the date you captured it.
- The observed behavior. Describe what was generated or changed, where it appeared, and whether it happened during play or was already present in the installed files.
- A reproducible path. Note the menu, level, quest, prompt, or input that led to the behavior. If the result can be reproduced, record the shortest sequence that produces it.
- Timing. Include purchase date, approximate playtime when you noticed the issue, and the date you submitted the request.
- Context. Explain whether the content was central to play, optional, cosmetic, background, or visible only in a particular language or mode. This helps distinguish a genuinely different feature from a misunderstanding of a broad disclosure.
- Unedited supporting files. Keep original screenshots or recordings. If you send a cropped image, retain the original in case Steam asks for more context.
Match the claim to the observation
| What the store page says | What you should document |
|---|---|
| No AI-generated content | The specific artwork, text, sound, localization, or other element you believe was generated with AI. |
| AI used during development | Evidence that the game creates new content while running, rather than merely shipping content made during development. |
| AI-generated assets are present | The asset or scene that appears inconsistent with the page’s description, including where it is encountered. |
| Live or interactive generation is disclosed | The actual trigger, limits, and output that differ from the description, if the game’s behavior does not match it. |
Do not claim that a file is AI-generated solely because its style resembles machine-made art. Explain what you know, what you observed, and what remains uncertain. Steam can compare the disclosure with the product, so a precise account is more useful than a conclusion you cannot substantiate.
What do Steam’s “Pre-Generated” and “Live-Generated” AI categories mean?
Steamworks uses two categories for AI content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Knowing the distinction helps you describe the mismatch accurately; neither category creates a different automatic refund right.
| Category | Definition in Steamworks documentation | Typical player-facing example |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Generated | Content made with AI tools during development, then shipped in the game for players to consume. | Artwork, sound, narrative, or localization created before release and included as fixed game assets. |
| Live-Generated | Content made with AI tools while the game is running. | Dialogue, images, quests, or other output generated in response to player input during play. |
Steamworks says the generative-AI portion of its Content Survey concerns content used to create material that ships with the game and is consumed by players. For live generation, developers must also describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal generated content. The definitions are explained in the Steamworks Content Survey documentation.

Use the categories as descriptive terms, not as proof that a developer violated a rule. A game can contain pre-generated AI assets without generating anything new on your computer, while a live-generation feature may be limited to a particular mode or require an online service. Your request should identify the behavior you actually encountered.
How should I phrase the explanation so Steam can verify it?
Write in chronological order: what the page disclosed, what you bought, what you encountered, and what remedy you want. Avoid insults, speculation about the developer’s motives, or claims that a mismatch is legally fraudulent unless you have independent legal advice supporting that conclusion.
Suggested structure
- Quote the disclosure: place the relevant sentence in quotation marks and identify the store-page section.
- Describe the product: name the chapter, mode, asset, or feature where you saw different behavior.
- Explain the difference: say whether the content was fixed in the game or generated during runtime, and why that conflicts with the wording.
- Give dates and playtime: state when you bought the game and how much you had played when you noticed the issue.
- Request a refund: ask Steam to review the purchase and mention that you can provide screenshots or recordings.
Example for a pre-generated-content dispute
“The store page’s AI section says no AI-generated artwork is included. In the installed game, the gallery contains a character illustration labeled as part of the shipped content; I captured the page and the gallery entry on [date]. I purchased the game on [date] and have [playtime] recorded. Please review this discrepancy and my refund request.”
Example for a live-generation dispute
“The store page describes AI use only as development-time asset creation. In the ‘Custom Dialogue’ mode, the game generated new responses after I entered text during play. I recorded the menu path and result on [date]. I purchased on [date] and have [playtime] recorded; please review the mismatch and my request for a refund.”

What happens after I submit the request?
Steam reviews the purchase under its refund policy and the information you provide. The policy does not promise approval because an AI disclosure appears inconsistent, nor does it publish a special review timetable for disclosure disputes.

- If the request meets the normal conditions, it follows the ordinary refund review process. Keep the explanation specific even when you are within 14 days and under two hours.
- If the request is outside the conditions, Steam can still review it. Explain why you needed additional time to identify or reproduce the discrepancy.
- If Steam asks for clarification, answer with the exact page wording, reproduction steps, and dates rather than resending a general complaint.
- If approved, Valve says the refund is issued within a week to Steam Wallet or, where supported, the original payment method.
Steam’s policy also notes that some jurisdictions may give consumers additional rights when a game is faulty. Whether a particular mismatch creates a legal entitlement depends on your location, the purchase terms, and the facts of the case; the general policy does not decide that question.
Does an incorrect AI disclosure prove the developer broke Steam’s rules?
Not by itself. Steamworks says the Content Survey helps Valve review a product and helps customers understand whether content matches their expectations and account preferences. Valve compares survey answers with the build and store page, but the documentation does not say that a mismatch automatically produces a refund or establishes a rule violation.
The survey is also not a waiver of Steam’s other requirements. Valve states: “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” That means disclosure and compliance are separate questions. Your refund request should therefore focus on the purchase and the factual inconsistency, while any broader enforcement decision remains Valve’s responsibility.
What if the store page or game changes after I bought it?
Record the version of the page and the game state you actually saw. Store text can be edited, and a patch can add, remove, or relocate a feature. Include the date of your screenshot, the game version if displayed, and whether the behavior occurred before or after an update.
If the current page no longer shows the wording you purchased under, explain that clearly and attach the earlier capture. Do not present an undated image as proof of what the page said at the time of purchase.
What if I am a developer trying to correct the disclosure?
Developer corrections use Steamworks procedures, not the customer refund form. Steamworks says the Content Survey must be completed before a store page and product build are submitted for review. Some survey answers cannot be edited after approval without contacting Steam Support; developers are asked to explain what changed and how a tester can access it.

The game says it has no AI, but you found fixed AI-made art
Capture the exact disclosure and identify the shipped asset, location, and label. Explain that your observation concerns pre-generated content included in the build, rather than claiming the game generated something live.
The game generates dialogue, but the page mentions only development tools
Document the input, the generated response, and the mode in which it occurred. State that you observed live generation during play and ask Steam to compare that behavior with the page’s wording.
You have more than two hours because you were testing the discrepancy
Submit the request anyway. Steam says it will consider requests outside the normal guidelines; give a short timeline showing when you discovered the issue and why verification required additional playtime.

Frequently asked questions
Can I request a refund if the game’s disclosure was changed after my purchase?
Yes, you can still submit a request, but preserve evidence of the wording that was visible when you bought or played the game. Include the capture date, the page address, and an explanation of how the current wording differs.
Is there a separate Steam form for reporting AI-disclosure errors?
Valve’s published consumer guidance directs buyers to the ordinary Steam Help refund or purchase-support flow. The Steamworks AI survey is a developer-facing process, not a customer refund form.
Does Steam automatically refund a game that violates its AI label?
No automatic refund is stated in Valve’s policy. Steam may review the facts, but approval depends on the individual purchase and the information provided.
Can local consumer law give me more than Steam’s standard policy?
Possibly. Steam notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights when a game is faulty, but the applicable rule depends on where you live and the details of the transaction. Consider local consumer-protection advice if the refund decision affects a substantial amount or a time-sensitive legal claim.
