How do I roll back an audio driver after a Windows Update?

What should I do when the audio device is missing in Device Manager?
A missing entry does not prove that the speakers are dead. Microsoft lists a missing, outdated, disabled, or improperly loading driver as a possible reason Windows cannot detect an output device.
- Open Device Manager.
- If the audio device appears with a down-arrow or similar status, right-click it and choose Enable device when that option is available.
- Select View > Show hidden devices.
- Open Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart Windows and check the sound device list again.
- If it remains absent, install the latest driver for the exact PC or sound-card model from the manufacturer and restart.
Also inspect other Device Manager categories for an unidentified device or warning icon. A controller that Windows cannot identify may be the audio hardware under a different entry.
Can the generic High Definition Audio Device driver fix a failed OEM driver?

- Close the Services window and test playback.
If a service is stopped rather than running, start it and test again. A service restart does not reinstall a driver; it addresses the Windows audio service layer after the driver is already present.
What if I use Realtek or another onboard audio controller?
Treat Realtek and other onboard controllers as hardware-specific devices, not as a reason to download a random package. Use the support page for the exact laptop or motherboard model first, because the computer maker may customize the driver.

The same Microsoft audio-driver guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. However, Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Where the hardware supports it, prioritize Windows 11 for current security and driver support; on an unsupported Windows 10 installation, obtain drivers from the PC or sound-card manufacturer and understand that newer packages may target Windows 11 first.
How can I tell whether the problem is software or hardware?
Software is the more likely cause when the device appears in Device Manager, a rollback changes the symptom, or reinstalling produces a clean device entry. Hardware becomes more likely when the device never appears after showing hidden devices, scanning for hardware changes, installing the exact manufacturer package, and testing a separate USB audio adapter.

Will reinstalling an audio driver delete my personal files?
No. The procedure changes the device driver, not documents, games, or other personal files. Save your work anyway because uninstalling the device requires a restart and some installers may restart Windows more than once.
Why does a USB headset work while my built-in speakers do not?
