If you forgot the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls password, Nintendo calls it a PIN. If the console is linked to the Parental Controls app and you can open that app, you can view the PIN there. Otherwise, start at the console’s Forgot PIN screen, keep its inquiry number visible, and use Nintendo’s regional reset service to request a Master Key.
First, check whether the console is linked to the app
On the console, go to HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls. Nintendo says the options shown tell you whether the console is linked:
- Linked: “Sync with Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App” and “Unregister App” appear.
- Not linked: “Parental Controls Settings” or “Change Settings” appears.
Choose the recovery path that fits
If the linked app is available
Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, choose Parental Controls > Parental-Controls PIN, and read the console’s PIN. Nintendo says you can also select a different PIN in the app. See Nintendo’s Forgot Parental Controls PIN instructions.
If the app is unavailable or the console is not linked
- From HOME, open the Parental Controls icon.
- Press + or − to open Help, then scroll to Forgot PIN.
- Write down the inquiry number and leave that screen open while arranging the reset. Nintendo warns that exiting and returning changes the inquiry number, making the earlier number unusable.
- Use Nintendo’s official online reset tool to submit the inquiry number and requested console information and request a Master Key. Follow the instructions for your region; the US tool displays country/product selection, serial and inquiry numbers, contact details, and a payment step, while also noting that the free app can reset the PIN.
- If you cannot complete the online process, contact Nintendo Support. The US instructions say an email address is required for the online service and direct people who cannot provide one to support. Nintendo’s UK instructions say self-service Master Key access requires a Nintendo Account linked to the console and direct users without one to support. These are regional requirements, not a single global rule.
Know the risks before resetting
- Do not keep guessing. Nintendo says six incorrect PIN attempts within 30 minutes trigger a 30-minute lockout, with a countdown displayed on screen.
- Do not lose the inquiry number. Leaving and reopening the screen invalidates the earlier number.
- Check what a reset changes. Nintendo UK warns that resetting the PIN on a console linked to the app also unlinks the app and deletes its play-time history and restrictions. Check your own regional support page before proceeding.
- Removing controls is not a bypass. Nintendo’s removal instructions require the PIN, so use the recovery process if you have forgotten it.
Does the app need to be updated?
Nintendo’s current US support article says the app is available for iOS and Android. It also notes that version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026, added sharing controls so two parents or guardians can monitor a child’s system. That update is not stated as a prerequisite for PIN recovery.
