Excel does not have a single built-in watermark control. What looks like a watermark is usually one of three separate layers: a worksheet background, a picture or text stored in a header or footer, or a WordArt/drawing object placed over the cells. Identify the layer first, then remove it with the matching command.
If the mark appears in Print Preview but not in Normal view, it is most likely in a header or footer. A tiled image behind cells is usually a sheet background, while selectable text or artwork over the grid is a drawing object.

What counts as a watermark in Excel?
Microsoft describes Excel as having no built-in watermark feature. Users create a watermark-like effect by adding a background image, inserting content into a header or footer, or placing WordArt over worksheet data. Those methods behave differently, so deleting the wrong layer may leave the visible mark unchanged.
The most reliable diagnosis is to compare what you see in the worksheet with what appears in Print Preview:

How do I remove a worksheet background?
A worksheet background is an image displayed behind the grid. It is not printed, so remove it from the sheet’s Page Layout controls rather than from the print settings.
- Select the worksheet that shows the image. If several sheet tabs are selected, confirm that you are editing the intended worksheet.
- Open the Page Layout tab.
- In the Page Setup group, choose Delete Background.
- Switch views or scroll through the sheet to confirm that the image behind the cells has disappeared.
The command removes the background assigned to that worksheet. It does not delete cell values, formulas, formatting, or a separate header/footer image. If the mark remains in Print Preview, it was not a sheet background and you should inspect the header/footer or a drawing object instead.

A mark visible in Print Preview, on printed pages, or in Page Layout view is usually stored in a header or footer. Headers and footers can contain text, pictures, or codes that repeat on printed pages even though they are not visible in Normal view.
Standard desktop Excel procedure
- Open Insert > Header & Footer. Excel enters Page Layout view and displays the header and footer boxes.
- Click the left, center, or right header box containing the watermark. If the mark is at the bottom of the page, select the corresponding footer box.
- Select the watermark text, picture code, or other content in that box.
- Press Delete or Backspace.
- Click elsewhere on the sheet and use File > Print to confirm that the mark is gone from the preview.
Delete only the content that represents the watermark if the header or footer also contains information you need, such as a date or page number. Each header and footer has separate left, center, and right sections, so inspect all sections if the mark has more than one part.
Clear every header and footer on the worksheet
If the entire header or footer should be removed, open the worksheet’s Page Setup dialog, select the Header/Footer tab, and choose (none). This removes the worksheet’s header and footer assignment rather than requiring you to edit each visible box individually. Use this option only when all existing header/footer content can be discarded.

How do I remove a header or footer watermark on a Mac?
Mac editions use a slightly different route for the header editor. The underlying idea is the same: edit the section that contains the mark and delete its contents.
- Select the worksheet containing the watermark.
- Open Layout > Header & Footer.
- Choose Customize Header (or the equivalent footer command if the mark is at the bottom of the page).
- Select the section containing the watermark.
- Press Delete, then choose OK to save the change.
- Open File > Print and inspect the preview.
Menu names can vary among Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, and selected Mac editions. If your labels differ, look for the worksheet’s Header & Footer or Page Setup controls and use Print Preview as the final test.
How do I delete WordArt or another watermark object?
WordArt is a drawing object placed on top of the worksheet data. Unlike a background, it can normally be selected directly and deleted.
- Click the visible text or image object. Selection handles should appear around it.
- Press Delete.
- Open File > Print to verify that the object no longer appears in the output.
If the object is difficult to click because it overlaps cells or other objects, switch to a layout-oriented view and use Excel’s object-selection controls to target it. Do not delete cell contents while trying to select the object. If the mark remains after the selected object is deleted, look for a second object or a header/footer entry.
Whether a drawing object prints depends on its print settings. That is why Print Preview, rather than the editing view alone, is the appropriate check.

Why does the watermark show in Print Preview but not in Normal view?
Normal view focuses on the cell grid and does not display header and footer content. Page Layout view, Print Preview, and the printed page do display that content. Therefore, a watermark that appears only when you preview or print is most likely in one of the header or footer sections.
To diagnose it, open Insert > Header & Footer on desktop Excel, or Layout > Header & Footer > Customize Header on a Mac. If you find the text or picture there, delete that item rather than changing the worksheet background. Conversely, a picture that is visible only behind cells in the editing window and never in Print Preview is consistent with a sheet background.
How can I remove only the watermark and keep other page information?
Edit the individual header or footer section instead of choosing (none). A section can contain several pieces of content, so select and delete only the draft label, confidential notice, or logo while leaving required page numbers, dates, or other text in place.
For a WordArt watermark, select the drawing object itself. For a worksheet background, use Delete Background; that command affects the background image, not the worksheet’s cells or print-header content.

What should I check when the watermark will not disappear?
The wrong layer was edited
If deleting the background has no effect on Print Preview, the mark is probably a header/footer item or a drawing object. If deleting a WordArt object changes the sheet but not the preview, inspect the header and footer as well.

The mark is in another header or footer section
Check the left, center, and right boxes in both the header and footer. A watermark can be stored in a different section from the one you first opened.
More than one object is present
Logos, draft labels, and translucent shapes may be separate drawing objects. Delete the unwanted object, then preview again; do not assume that removing one object removes every visual element.
The worksheet context is not the one you intended
Confirm the active sheet tab before changing Page Layout or Header/Footer settings. If sheet tabs are grouped, take extra care to verify the selection so that a layout change is not applied more broadly than intended.

After making a change, leave the header/footer editor or click back into the worksheet, then reopen File > Print. The refreshed preview is the authoritative check for what will be sent to a printer or file.

Print Preview is the final verification because it shows the worksheet output before you send it to a printer or create a file. A clean Normal view alone does not prove that a header or footer has been removed.

Does removing a watermark affect the worksheet data?
No. These watermark-like elements are presentation layers separate from cell values and formulas. Deleting a background, header/footer item, or drawing object removes that visual element; it does not erase the worksheet’s data.
The exception is user error: pressing Delete while a cell or range is selected can remove cell contents. Confirm that the intended object or header/footer section is selected before deleting.
Which Excel versions and platforms use these commands?
The documented procedures cover Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, and selected Mac editions. The feature names and menu paths can differ by platform, particularly for Mac header/footer editing. When a label is different, locate the equivalent Page Layout, Header & Footer, or Page Setup control and verify the result in Print Preview.
