Repairing corrupt Group Policy in Windows starts with identifying whether the failure is on one computer or in the domain. On a standalone client, capture diagnostics, back up the affected policy files, identify whether registry.pol or gpt.ini is malformed, repair only that artifact, run gpupdate, and verify with gpresult. If local processing works but domain policies are missing, investigate Active Directory and SYSVOL replication instead of deleting client files. The steps below separate those two cases so a targeted repair does not erase valid settings or disrupt every computer in the domain.
What does “corrupt Group Policy” mean?
Group Policy errors can come from two different scopes:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Local policy corruption: a client cannot parse its own policy files, commonly
registry.polorgpt.ini. - Domain delivery or replication failure: the client can process local policy, but an Active Directory GPO, its SYSVOL files, or replication metadata is missing or inconsistent.
The distinction determines the safe fix. Replacing a local file will not repair a broken domain GPO, and rebuilding domain policy files on a workstation can hide the evidence needed by an administrator. Treat the event, error code, target (user or computer), and named path as your scope boundary.
How do I prove which policy component is failing?
Build a before-and-after record before changing anything. This gives you a rollback point and shows whether the repair changed the intended policy rather than merely removing an error.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Generate a baseline report:
gpresult /h %TEMP%GPResult-before.htmSave the resulting HTML file somewhere safe.
- Copy the local policy files, if present, to a backup directory. Preserve both files independently:
C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicyMachineregistry.pol C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicyUserregistry.pol C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicygpt.iniDo not overwrite the original backup when testing a second repair.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System, Windows Logs > Application, and Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > GroupPolicy > Operational.
- Record the event ID, hexadecimal or decimal error code, affected user or computer side, and exact file path. A message naming the User file points to user policy; a Machine path points to computer policy.
Microsoft describes these logs as the basic troubleshooting evidence. A successful gpupdate by itself is not proof that every GPO applied; the resulting policy report and Operational log must be checked as well.
Where are the local Group Policy files stored?
Registry-based local settings are separated into machine and user files:

| Scope | File | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Computer | C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicyMachineregistry.pol |
Settings applied to the computer during computer-policy processing |
| User | C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicyUserregistry.pol |
Settings applied to the signed-in user |
| Local policy metadata | C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicygpt.ini |
Version and metadata used by the local policy engine |
These are local client artifacts. A domain controller also has policy data in Active Directory and in the SYSVOL share, so a workstation-file procedure must not be applied to a domain controller or treated as a domain recovery method.
How can I test whether registry.pol is corrupt?
Use Microsoft’s LGPO.exe from the Security Compliance Toolkit to parse the file. Parsing provides stronger evidence than guessing from a generic “Group Policy failed” message.
Test the computer policy file
LGPO.exe /parse /m %windir%system32grouppolicymachineregistry.pol > registry.txt 2>&1
Open registry.txt. Invalid file format indicates that the parser could not interpret the file. PARSING COMPLETED indicates that parsing completed successfully; it does not by itself prove that every desired setting is correct.

Test the user policy file
Run the equivalent command against %windir%system32grouppolicyuserregistry.pol when the event identifies the user side. Test the file named by the error rather than replacing both files automatically.
Use Event 1096 only when the Windows version supports it
On Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, Microsoft’s guidance says that cumulative updates beginning in February 2026 can use Event 1096 to identify a failing local registry.pol path and include parsing details. This is a version-dependent aid, not a universal event number for every Windows release. On other versions, rely on the available Group Policy events and the parser output.
What is the safest way to repair a corrupt local policy file?
Once the evidence identifies a malformed client file, preserve the original and make the smallest controlled change. Perform the operation during a maintenance window, preferably first on a test endpoint, because removing a local policy file can remove locally configured settings that must later be recreated.
- Confirm that the parser or event names the specific
registry.polfile. If it does not, stop and gather more evidence instead of changing both user and computer policy. - Copy the original file to a dated backup location. Include the event details and the “before”
gpresultreport with that backup. - Close Local Group Policy Editor and any management tool that may be writing policy.
- Rename the identified file, rather than immediately deleting it. For example, append
.corrupt-YYYYMMDDto the filename. Renaming preserves a rollback copy and allows the policy engine to create a clean replacement when it processes policy again. - Run the refresh command for the affected side:
gpupdate /forceFor a machine-only test use
gpupdate /force /target:computer; for a user-only test usegpupdate /force /target:user. - If the refresh succeeds, recreate only the local settings that were intentionally configured and verify that they appear in the policy report. Keep the renamed file until the endpoint has passed normal logon and restart tests.
The rename-and-recreate action is an operational recovery technique based on the documented role of the file; validate it in your environment before broad deployment. Do not treat a newly created empty policy file as proof that the original settings were unnecessary.
Can I delete the GroupPolicy folder?
Do not blindly delete C:WindowsSystem32GroupPolicy. The tree can contain valid machine settings, user settings, and metadata; deleting it removes the distinction between those scopes and makes rollback harder. It can also obscure whether the original problem was a malformed file, a permissions issue, or a domain-delivery failure.

If evidence points to a malformed gpt.ini on a client, Broadcom’s documented procedure reports that the file can typically be deleted and recreated when Local Group Policy Editor is launched. Apply that advice only to the affected client file after taking a backup. Never use this client-file procedure on a domain controller.
Why does gpupdate /force fail, and what should I try next?
A failed refresh means the policy engine could not complete one or more activities; it does not identify the cause by itself. Use the failure’s event, code, and target to choose the next branch.
- The error names a local file: parse the named
registry.pol, inspectgpt.iniif reported, and repair only that file. - The command reports that policy was processed but a GPO is denied: compare the “Applied” and “Denied” sections in the
gpresultreport. Check security filtering, WMI filtering, link location, and whether the user or computer is in the intended organizational unit. - The client cannot contact a domain controller: check DNS, secure-channel health, time synchronization, and access to SYSVOL before changing local files.
- The event identifies a slow or stuck extension: reproduce once, then use the Group Policy Operational log to identify the extension and its error rather than repeatedly forcing refreshes.
After each change, run gpupdate once, generate a new report, and compare it with the baseline. Repeated forced refreshes without reviewing the log can add noise and make the original event harder to locate.
How do I enable deeper GPSvc logging?
When the normal logs do not show the failing activity, Microsoft documents a temporary GPSvc debug log.
- In an elevated Command Prompt, create
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDiagnosticsGPSvcDebugLevelas aDWORD. - Set its hexadecimal value to
30002. - Reproduce the failure with
gpupdate /force. - Read
%windir%debugusermodegpsvc.logand correlate timestamps with the Operational log. - Disable the diagnostic value after collecting the reproduction. Verbose logging can reduce performance and consume disk space.
Use the debug file to locate the failing extension, file, or communication step; it is not a substitute for the before-and-after policy report.

How can I tell whether the problem is in the domain?
If local policy parses correctly but a domain GPO is absent, denied, stale, or inconsistent between domain controllers, move the investigation to Active Directory and SYSVOL.
Check the GPO’s directory and file halves
Each domain GPO has an object in Active Directory and a matching GUID-named folder under SYSVOL. Confirm that the GPO is linked to the expected site, domain, or organizational unit and that permissions allow the intended user or computer to read and apply it. Then compare the object and its SYSVOL folder across domain controllers.
An Active Directory object with no matching SYSVOL folder, or an orphaned SYSVOL folder with no corresponding object, is a consistency problem requiring domain-level repair. Deleting a client’s local policy directory cannot restore either half.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the two replication systems separately
Active Directory replication and DFS Replication (DFSR) for SYSVOL are independent mechanisms. A directory object can arrive before its policy files, or the files can be present while directory metadata is stale. Check replication health, event logs, and version consistency on the domain controllers before modifying policy data.
Microsoft documents that DFSR replication within a site occurs at 15-minute intervals. A recent change may therefore be temporarily absent without being corrupt; confirm replication state and allow the expected interval before escalating.

When should I use dcgpofix?
Use dcgpofix only for recovery of the two default domain policies when a disaster-recovery restore is unavailable and the domain-level evidence supports that action. It can recreate the Default Domain Policy, the Default Domain Controllers Policy, or both.
It is not a universal Group Policy reset. Microsoft explicitly states that Dcgpofix.exe restores only settings contained in those default GPOs; it does not restore administrator-created GPOs. Export or back up custom GPOs before any recovery operation, and plan the command with the domain team because its effects reach many clients.
Which repair path fits my symptoms?
| Symptom or evidence | Likely scope | First action | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|
Parser reports an invalid machine or user registry.pol |
One client, one policy side | Back up and rename only the named file; refresh and verify | Restore the saved file if required |
Malformed client gpt.ini is named |
One client’s local metadata | Back up the file, then recreate it through the documented client procedure | Restore the backup and retest |
| Local files parse, but a domain GPO is missing | Domain link, permissions, AD, or SYSVOL | Check GPO links, security filtering, matching GUID folders, and replication | Use GPO backup or authoritative domain recovery |
| Default domain policies are damaged and no restore exists | Domain-wide defaults | Evaluate dcgpofix with domain administrators |
Reapply backed-up custom settings; it does not restore custom GPOs |
How do I verify that the repair really worked?
- Run
gpupdate /force, or target the repaired side explicitly. - Generate a new report:
gpresult /h %TEMP%GPResult-after.htm - Compare applied, denied, and filtered GPOs with the baseline. Confirm that the intended user or computer receives the expected settings.
- Review the Group Policy Operational log for a successful processing sequence and confirm that the original parsing or processing error does not recur.
- Test a normal sign-in, sign-out, restart, or policy-dependent application behavior. Keep the backup until those tests pass.
A clean refresh with no policy report is not sufficient: the report must show the expected GPOs, and the relevant setting must have the correct scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will repairing local Group Policy remove domain policies?
No. Local policy files and domain GPOs are separate sources. A local-file repair can remove or reset settings configured locally on that endpoint, but it does not edit the GPO objects stored in Active Directory or their SYSVOL folders.
Why does Group Policy work for one user but not another?
User policy can differ because of organizational-unit placement, security filtering, WMI filtering, loopback processing, or a damaged User-side local file. Compare each account’s gpresult report and the user-specific events rather than assuming the computer side is at fault.
How long should I wait after changing a domain GPO?
Within a site, DFSR SYSVOL replication is documented as using 15-minute intervals, so a newly edited policy file may not be immediately visible on every domain controller. Check replication health and the policy version before forcing repeated client refreshes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do with the renamed corrupt registry.pol file?
Keep it isolated and clearly dated until the endpoint has passed policy, sign-in, and restart checks. It may contain settings that were intentionally configured; use it as a reference or rollback source rather than deleting it as soon as the error disappears.
