Repair a damaged Netherite tool in an anvil: put the tool in the first slot and a Netherite ingot in the second, then check the displayed result and experience cost before taking it. You can also combine it with another tool of the exact same type to add durability and merge compatible enchantments.
Repair a Netherite tool with an ingot
- Open an anvil.
- Place the damaged Netherite tool in the first slot.
- Place a Netherite ingot in the second slot.
- Review the output and displayed experience cost. If the result and cost suit you, take the repaired tool.
Minecraft’s anvil overview describes material repairs as restoring 25% durability per unit of repair material. That is the article’s general rule; it does not establish every version-specific exception. Do not expect one ingot to fully repair every tool. Netherite ingots are made from four Netherite scraps and four gold ingots, according to Minecraft’s Netherite ingot guide.
Repair it by combining two matching tools
- Open an anvil.
- Place the damaged Netherite tool in one slot.
- Place another tool of the exact same type in the other slot.
- Check the output’s durability, enchantments, and displayed cost before taking it.
The anvil combines the items’ remaining durability with a bonus and merges compatible enchantments. This option uses a spare tool rather than an ingot; whether it is preferable depends on the items and their prior anvil work.
Choose based on what you have and the anvil’s result
- Use an ingot when you want to spend Netherite material and do not have a suitable duplicate.
- Combine matching tools when you have a spare of the same type and want to see whether its durability and enchantments make a better result.
- Compare the displayed cost. Repeated anvil operations increase the prior-work cost, so there is no single experience price that applies to every tool and history. The anvil screen shows the cost for your specific operation.
Minecraft’s overview notes that anvil work can accumulate a prior-work penalty and describes combining items as often cheaper than individual material repairs. Treat that as a general comparison, not a guarantee for every pair of tools.

An anvil repairs Netherite; a smithing table upgrades diamond gear
A smithing table is for upgrading diamond equipment to Netherite, not repairing a tool that is already Netherite. The instructions depend on edition and version: the Bedrock 1.16 Nether Update notes describe using a diamond tool or armor piece with a Netherite ingot, while the Java Edition 1.19.4 notes document the redesigned smithing table and its Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template requirement. Those release notes describe different stages of the feature; do not treat the older instructions as universal current steps.

Can diamonds repair an already-Netherite tool?
No repair route described by Minecraft uses diamonds for an already-Netherite tool. Use a Netherite ingot or another matching tool in an anvil.
Does repairing damage the anvil?
Minecraft’s 2020 anvil overview says each use has a 12% chance to damage an anvil, which can be damaged three times before it is destroyed. This is the figure in that overview, not a newly verified statistic for every current edition and version.
