Request the refund from the store that processed your payment, using the account and regional support page for that purchase. AI-generated content is not, by itself, a refund category in the Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo US or Microsoft guidance reviewed. Your strongest request identifies a specific defect, missing or inaccurately described feature, or a purchase-time disclosure that was materially wrong. Submit promptly, check the platform’s play, download or streaming limits, and keep the listing, receipt, screenshots and support replies. Local consumer law can provide rights beyond a platform’s ordinary policy, but the result depends on your country and the facts.
Can I get a refund just because a game uses AI-generated content?
Usually, you should not describe AI use alone as the reason for a refund. The platform policies reviewed do not list “uses AI” as an automatic entitlement. A request is more persuasive when it explains what you actually received and why it failed to match the offer or became unusable.

- Misdescription: the store page promised human-created art, writing, voice work or another feature, but the supplied game materially differed.
- Missing or defective content: an advertised mode, asset, language, accessibility feature or other component does not work.
- Faulty software: the game crashes, cannot launch, corrupts saves or has another reproducible technical fault.
- Inaccurate disclosure: a purchase-time statement about how content was made was false or omitted information that materially affected the purchase.
These are examples of how to explain the problem, not a ruling that any particular disclosure creates a legal refund right. State what happened, when you noticed it and what remedy you want. Do not claim that a platform guarantees an exception when its policy only says an out-of-window request may be reviewed.
What should I check before submitting a request?
Check the purchase channel, region and timing first. Rules can differ between a US and UK storefront, and a game bought through a console store follows that store’s process even if the game also has a PC version.

Use the account that paid
Sign in to the platform account shown on the receipt. Gather the transaction ID, purchase date, payment method, title and edition. If a family member or another account made the purchase, the account holder may need to submit the request.
Record use and delivery status
Write down playtime, download and streaming dates, and the date you first saw the problem. Steam counts online, offline and shared-library playtime. PlayStation’s ordinary game and add-on rule turns on whether downloading or streaming has started. These facts are different from simply owning or uninstalling the game.

Preserve the offer
Save the store listing, trailers or screenshots that describe the disputed feature and any AI-content disclosure shown before purchase. Keep the receipt, error messages, crash records, save-file symptoms, dates of support contacts and every reply. Store pages can change after launch, so a dated screenshot is useful.
How do the major digital stores differ?

“14 days” is not interchangeable across stores: Steam pairs it with a playtime ceiling, while PlayStation pairs it with a no-download or no-streaming condition. Nintendo’s US policy starts from a restrictive final-sale position, and Microsoft directs you to an eligibility process rather than promising a universal window.

How do I request a Steam refund for a game with AI content?
Steam’s ordinary rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of play. The two-hour calculation includes online, offline and shared-library play. You can still submit a request outside those limits, but Valve describes it as a review rather than an automatic exception.

- Open Purchases and select the game.
- Choose the issue that most accurately describes the problem.
- Select I’d like to request a refund.
- Complete the form with the purchase date, the concrete defect or mismatch, when you noticed it and the remedy requested.
- Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method, then submit.
What to write in the Steam explanation
Keep the description factual: “The listing said [feature], but the released game supplies [different result]. I observed this on [date] and have attached [screenshot or error].” If the concern is AI use, identify the inaccurate statement or resulting fault instead of treating AI as the violation. Do not say Valve approved an exception; ask for review if your request falls outside the ordinary criteria.
How do I request a PlayStation refund?
For PlayStation games and add-ons, the US support criteria generally require a request within 14 days and no download or streaming, unless the content is faulty. The UK cancellation policy uses the same 14-day and no-start condition for a change-of-mind request, while downloaded or streamed content is refundable under that policy only when faulty.

Choosing the correct regional policy
Use the page for the country where the purchase was made. A US account and a UK account can have different cancellation language. If you downloaded or streamed the title, explain a genuine fault and provide evidence; do not present a change-of-mind request as a defect claim.
How do I ask Nintendo for a refund?

- Open Nintendo’s account or support contact route for digital purchases.
- Provide the transaction information and state the concrete problem, such as a non-working feature or a material mismatch with the listing.
- Attach or retain the listing, disclosure, screenshots and error evidence requested by support.
Because the US policy is restrictive, accuracy matters. If your request concerns a legal right in your location, identify the relevant jurisdiction and facts rather than asserting that AI use changes Nintendo’s default rule.
How do I request a Microsoft or Xbox digital-game refund?
Microsoft directs Xbox digital-game buyers to its digital-games refund process. The process asks you to sign in, select the item, choose Request a refund, give a reason and submit. Microsoft says PC Microsoft Store digital goods are generally not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes them eligible, and online returns are not available in every market.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Open the digital-games refund process for your market.
- Select the game or add-on.
- Choose Request a refund and answer the reason questions.
- Explain the reproducible defect, missing or misdescribed feature, or inaccurate disclosure and submit supporting records.
Check whether the transaction was made through Xbox, Microsoft Store on PC or another seller. The applicable channel and eligibility can change with the market and the offer.
How should I explain an AI-content complaint?
Lead with the consumer problem, then explain why the AI detail matters. A support agent can evaluate a defect or mismatch; “the game used AI” by itself does not tell the agent what failed.

If the listing disclosed AI use and you object to that choice, say so, but separate the objection from any claim that the product was defective or misdescribed. If the disclosure itself was inaccurate, quote what was shown at purchase and explain the difference.
What evidence should I keep?
Evidence does not guarantee approval, but it lets the store assess the claim without guessing. Keep original files and dates rather than relying on memory.
- Purchase confirmation, invoice and transaction ID.
- Store-page screenshots or saved text showing features, authorship statements or AI disclosures at purchase.
- Short recordings or screenshots showing the missing feature, incorrect content, crash, error code or corrupted save.
- Download, streaming and playtime information where the platform uses it.
- Dates, ticket numbers and copies of all support correspondence.
- Any developer notice or patch note that changes the disputed feature, if it is relevant to when the problem existed.
Answer the form’s questions honestly. Do not alter playtime records, omit a download or describe a preference as a technical fault.
What can I do if the store denies the refund?
Read the stated reason and compare it with the policy for your purchase region. If you supplied new evidence of a fault or misdescription, ask for a review through the same official support channel and identify the omitted fact. Keep the denial and the review response.
Local law may add rights
Store terms do not necessarily replace statutory consumer protections. PlayStation’s US and UK pages preserve possible rights for faulty content. For UK consumers, section 45 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides a refund remedy for a qualifying breach involving digital content. If only part of the digital content is affected, the statutory refund does not extend to unaffected content. Once the trader agrees that the consumer is entitled, the refund must be made without undue delay and within 14 days, using the same payment method unless the consumer agrees otherwise.

Whether an AI-related complaint is a qualifying breach depends on the actual representation, product condition and other facts. The UK rule is not a worldwide standard. Outside the UK, consult the consumer authority or statute for the place of purchase, or obtain qualified advice when the amount or dispute justifies it.
Why a chargeback is not the first step
A payment dispute has separate card-network and bank rules, and the available evidence and consequences vary. The platform guidance reviewed does not establish a guaranteed chargeback outcome. Use the store’s official review route first and preserve the correspondence in case your payment provider later asks what happened.

No. Uninstallation does not reset a platform’s playtime, download or streaming records. Preserve your evidence and submit through the account that made the purchase.
Can the game developer refund me directly?
If the transaction was processed by a digital storefront, that storefront normally controls the refund workflow. Contact the developer only when the store or the purchase receipt specifically directs you there, and keep any developer response for the store review.
