Yes, you can submit a refund request for a game bought directly from Microsoft, but approval is not automatic. Sign in to Microsoft’s official refund page with the account used for the purchase, select the game, choose Request a refund, explain the reason, select Next, check the details and select Submit. Microsoft says a request can take up to 72 hours to process. If it is approved, the credit normally goes back to the original payment method and usually appears within 3–5 business days.
That process applies to purchases made through Microsoft or Xbox. If another retailer processed the payment, that retailer—not Microsoft—must handle the refund. Italian and EU cancellation rights also depend on whether digital delivery has started and whether the content is defective or otherwise non-conforming.

Start by identifying where the game was bought
The seller shown on your payment record determines the correct route. A game purchased through the Microsoft Store on Xbox, Windows or the web can be submitted through Microsoft’s digital-game refund process. A code bought from a physical shop, marketplace or another online retailer must be returned under that seller’s policy. Microsoft states that it does not accept returns for Microsoft products purchased from another retailer.

- The Microsoft account that completed the transaction.
- The game title, purchase date and order or transaction information.
- The payment method that was charged.
- A concise description of what went wrong, such as an accidental purchase, duplicate charge, missing entitlement or a technical defect.
If you used a different account on the console from the one that paid, sign out and try the purchasing account first. The order list is tied to that account, so the transaction may not appear otherwise.

How to submit the request in Microsoft’s refund flow
- Open Microsoft’s official support page. Go to Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. Follow the link on that page to the Xbox or Microsoft digital-game refund form.
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account used to buy the game. If the browser opens a different account automatically, sign out or use a private window and sign in again.
- Select the transaction. Find the game in the displayed order list. Check the title and purchase date before proceeding; do not select a different game or a subscription by mistake.
- Choose Request a refund. If Microsoft presents that option for the transaction, select it to open the reason and explanation fields.
- Give the reason. Select the closest reason offered and add a factual explanation. State whether the purchase was accidental, duplicated, unavailable, or affected by a specific fault. Avoid long unrelated account history; the reviewer needs the transaction and the problem.
- Select Next. Review the proposed refund details, including the item and payment destination.
- Select Submit. Keep the confirmation page or message. It is useful if you need to contact support about the same request.
- Monitor the request. Check the refund-status area and messages sent by Microsoft. Microsoft says processing may take up to 72 hours.
- Check the original payment method. After Microsoft marks the refund as issued, allow approximately 3–5 business days for the credit to appear. Banks and payment providers can post credits at different times.
What the 72-hour and 3–5-day figures mean
The two time periods describe different stages. The up to 72 hours period is Microsoft’s stated processing time for reviewing the request. It is not a promise that every request will be approved within that period. The 3–5 business days estimate begins after an approved refund is issued and concerns delivery of the money to the original payment method.
Weekends, public holidays and the payment provider’s own posting schedule can make the calendar wait longer than five consecutive days. If the status says the refund was issued but the credit is absent after the stated banking window, contact the payment provider first, then Microsoft Sales or Support with the order information.
When an Xbox game is refundable in Italy
Microsoft’s support wording is deliberately conditional: “Digital goods like apps, games, add-on content, subscriptions, movies, TV shows, and books aren’t refundable unless the offer or applicable law states that you’re eligible for a refund.” You can read the current wording on Microsoft’s refund-help page.
That means submitting the form is a request for an eligibility decision, not an automatic entitlement. Microsoft’s public material does not publish a guaranteed Italy-specific play-time limit or a guaranteed approval rate. Community claims such as a fixed number of hours should not be treated as Microsoft policy.

The strongest facts to establish in the request are:
- The game was purchased directly from Microsoft.
- The correct account and transaction are selected.
- The request concerns the whole item rather than one component of a bundle.
- The reason is accurately described, especially where the game is defective, damaged, misdescribed or not supplied as promised.
- The request falls within any offer or legal rule that applies to the transaction.
Italy and EU cooling-off rules for digital content
Microsoft’s current Services Agreement describes a 14-day “Cooling-Off Period” from the day of purchase, with or without cause, where that period applies. The agreement also says that, for digital content, the right to cancel ends when downloading begins. Read the current terms at Microsoft’s Services Agreement.
For an Italian customer, the practical point is not to treat 14 days as a universal Xbox-game guarantee. Digital delivery can change the cancellation position once downloading or access has started, unless applicable law or the specific offer provides otherwise. The relevant facts are therefore the purchase date, whether download or activation began, what consent or acknowledgement was given at checkout, and whether the content has a defect or fails to conform to the contract.

Accidental purchases: how to explain one clearly
An accidental purchase is a legitimate reason to submit a request, but the form does not promise approval merely because the purchase was unintended. Keep the explanation specific: identify the game, say that it was selected or confirmed by mistake, state whether it was downloaded or played, and ask for the charge to be returned to the original payment method. Do not claim that the game was defective if the real issue was an accidental click.
If a child or another household member made the purchase, say so accurately and explain whether the account owner authorised the transaction. Microsoft may assess the account and transaction history; changing the story can make the review harder.
Defective or non-conforming content
A game that crashes, fails to launch, omits advertised content or otherwise does not match its description should be described as a product problem rather than a simple change of mind. Include the platform, the error or missing feature, when it began, and any troubleshooting already attempted. Screenshots, error codes and a short timeline can make the issue easier to understand.

Downloading the game does not erase every possible remedy. Microsoft’s terms distinguish the end of ordinary digital cancellation after download from rights that may apply when digital content is defective or non-conforming. Use the refund form first, and if it does not provide an appropriate route, contact Microsoft Sales or Support and explain that the request concerns conformity or a defect.

If the refund option is missing
Online returns are not available in every market. If the transaction appears in your order history but there is no Request a refund option, try the following in order:
- Confirm that you are signed in with the account that paid for the game.
- Open the order details and check that the item is a standalone purchase rather than a component of a bundle.
- Try the official support page in another current browser or a private window, especially if several Microsoft accounts are saved in the browser.
- Check whether another retailer, console account or payment profile actually processed the charge.
- Use Microsoft Sales or Support when the online option is unavailable in your market or does not display the transaction.
When contacting support, provide the order number, purchase date, game title, account email and a short description of the requested remedy. Do not submit multiple contradictory requests for the same charge; refer to the existing case or confirmation instead.

Bundles
Microsoft’s stated online process does not allow a single item inside a bundle to be returned. If you no longer want one game in a package, the automated form may reject the request because the transaction is evaluated as a bundle. Contact Sales or Support and identify the complete bundle and the specific component involved.
Add-on content
Add-ons are included in Microsoft’s definition of digital goods. Select the exact add-on transaction when it is listed, rather than choosing the base game. Explain whether the add-on was delivered, consumed or unusable. The same offer-and-law eligibility rule applies.

Subscriptions, films, television and books
The refund page covers more than games, but a subscription or video purchase follows its own transaction rules. Select the correct product category and do not describe a subscription charge as a game purchase. This article’s workflow is for the game transaction itself.
What to do after a rejection
A rejection means the automated request was not approved; it does not change who took the payment. Re-read the reason shown, verify that the correct account and item were selected, and contact Microsoft Sales or Support if you have evidence of a defect, a non-conforming product or a transaction error that the form did not capture. Include new, relevant facts rather than repeating a generic request.
If the charge came from another retailer, stop pursuing Microsoft and use the retailer’s complaint or refund channel. A bank chargeback should not be the first step for an ordinary change-of-mind request; it can complicate the account while the seller’s process is still available. Use your payment provider’s dispute process only when appropriate under that provider’s rules, such as an unauthorised charge that you did not make.
