For a game bought directly through Steam, sign in to the account that made the purchase, open Steam Support and Purchases, select the transaction, and submit a refund request. Valve’s standard terms for games are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. If the game is broken or its store page misrepresented it, explain the specific problem—but neither allegation automatically guarantees an exception when you are outside those limits.
You can still ask Valve to review a request that misses the usual thresholds. Approval is discretionary, and Valve cannot refund a game or key bought from another seller. If Valve approves a refund, it says the full purchase refund is issued within a week of approval; the destination depends on the payment method.

What are Steam’s refund rules for a broken game?
For a game purchased on Steam, Valve’s published standard terms allow a refund request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve’s policy was last updated on April 23, 2024. Those are the policy’s ordinary conditions, not a rule that a broken game is automatically refunded or that a request outside the limits is automatically rejected.
The standard refund offer permits a request for any reason, so a buyer who meets those conditions does not have to prove a defect to qualify for the ordinary review. If the game is faulty or the store listing was misleading, describe what happened accurately. If you miss either threshold, you may still submit a request, but Valve says it will review requests outside the usual rules at its discretion; approval is not assured.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Valve also states: “Consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights to a refund in circumstances where the game is faulty.” That is a jurisdiction-specific qualification, not a blanket statement of legal rights for every buyer or every country.
How the two standard limits work
The limits are separate conditions. A request made on day 10 after 2 hours and 5 minutes of play is outside the ordinary offer because the playtime limit has been exceeded. A request made after 14 days with 45 minutes of play is also outside the ordinary offer because the date limit has passed. You may still ask Valve to review either request, but submitting it does not convert it into a standard, automatic refund.
The policy figures are Valve’s published terms, not an approval-rate statistic. Valve does not publish a percentage showing how often broken-game or misrepresentation requests succeed, so do not rely on online claims that a particular defect, screenshot, or number of previous requests guarantees an exception.
How do I submit a refund request for a Steam game?
Submit the request through Steam Support using the account that bought the game. The exact controls shown can vary; Valve’s gift-refund instructions document a purchase-level route with a refund option, a reason, and a submit action, but that does not establish that every game purchase displays identical labels.
- Sign in to Steam Support. Use the Steam account that made the purchase. The support landing page directs signed-in users to purchase help.
- Open Purchases. Find and select the transaction for the game in question. Check that you have selected the correct purchase, especially if the account has multiple recent transactions.
- Choose the available refund option. Select the reason that best matches your situation, then submit the request. If the game is broken or the listing was misleading, choose the closest available reason rather than selecting an unrelated one.
- Explain the issue clearly. Give the game’s name, the feature affected, what you observed, when it happened, and—if you allege misrepresentation—the specific store-page claim you believe is inaccurate. A concise factual explanation is more useful than a general statement that the game is “broken.”
- Ask for review if you are outside the standard limits. State why you are requesting an exception and describe the defect or mismatch. Submitting a request makes no promise that Valve will approve it.
Where do I explain why the game does not work?
Use the explanation area in the purchase-level refund request after selecting the transaction and the closest reason. That is where you can identify the failed feature, error, or store-page statement. If the interface offers a limited list of reasons, select the one that most closely describes the issue and put the details in the accompanying explanation instead of trying to force a technical description into a generic category.
What should I write in the explanation?
Keep the note brief, concrete, and specific to the game. For example:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe store page described [feature]. In my copy, [specific behavior] occurs when I [steps]. I tried [relevant steps] on [date]. I am requesting a refund because [concrete impact].
This is an example to help organize your explanation, not a Valve-required template, formal evidence checklist, or guarantee of approval. For a broken feature, describe the observable behavior and its impact. For an alleged false or misleading listing, identify the claim and explain how the game differs from it. Avoid presenting an opinion about quality as though it were proof that a specific feature is absent.
If you have an error message or a relevant store-page statement, describe it precisely. The published policy does not establish that screenshots or any particular document are required, nor does it promise that attaching them will secure an exception. Dates are useful when they show when you bought the game, encountered the problem, or tested the advertised feature, but Valve has not published a mandatory evidence checklist.

A practical detail checklist
- Name the exact game and purchase, especially if several editions or transactions appear in Purchases.
- Quote or accurately paraphrase the particular advertised feature, mode, language, or condition at issue.
- Describe the reproducible behavior: what you did, what the game did instead, and whether the feature was missing, inaccessible, or unusable.
- State the concrete impact, such as being unable to start, progress, or use the feature you bought.
- Give relevant dates without implying that a date alone creates a refund right outside the normal limits.
Can I get a refund after two hours or 14 days?
You can ask, but the standard conditions no longer both apply if you have reached two hours of playtime or passed 14 days from purchase. Valve says it will look at requests outside the usual limits; the decision is not guaranteed, even when the request concerns a defect or an alleged mismatch with the store page.
In an outside-window request, explain the specific issue and why it matters to your purchase. Be precise about what feature failed or what advertised feature was missing, and include the relevant dates or store-page claim where useful. Do not assume that a broken-game claim, a screenshot, or a particular number of prior requests creates an automatic exception.
Valve’s policy acknowledges that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights when a game is faulty. Whether any such right applies depends on the buyer’s jurisdiction and circumstances; the policy statement alone does not establish a universal entitlement.
Which limit did I exceed?
Tell Steam Support plainly whether the request is late, over two hours, or both. A request just beyond one limit is still an outside-window request, but explaining the exact timing helps Valve understand the circumstances. If the game was unplayable from the start, say when you first encountered the failure and what you tried; do not claim that the failure automatically resets the playtime or purchase clock.
Is there a formal appeal after a denial?
The published policy lets buyers ask Valve to review a request outside the normal limits. The accessible official information does not establish a guaranteed appeal process, a required appeal form, or a specific route for overturning a denial. You can make the facts clearer in a further support request if Steam presents that option, but do not describe it as a guaranteed second-level appeal.
What if the game is not as advertised?
Describe the difference between the store-page claim and the game you received, rather than relying on the label “misrepresented.” Identify the feature or condition the listing communicated, what the game actually does or lacks, and how that difference affects your purchase.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Be specific about the claim. Point to the particular feature, mode, or other representation you mean; do not characterize the whole listing as false if only one detail is at issue.
- Separate a missing feature from disappointment. A game failing to include a stated feature is a concrete allegation. Finding the game less enjoyable than expected is different, though the ordinary Steam refund offer allows requests for any reason when its standard conditions are met.
- Keep the timing in view. If you are within 14 days and under two hours, use the normal request route. If you are outside either limit, ask for review and explain the circumstances without assuming the allegation changes the standard terms.
Valve does not publish an approval rate for broken-game or misrepresentation claims in the material available here. A detailed explanation can make the request understandable, but it cannot establish in advance how Valve will decide it.
Broken versus misleading: which description fits?
A technical failure concerns how the copy you received operates—for example, a stated function does not work when you follow the ordinary steps. A misleading-listing allegation concerns a difference between what the store page represented and what was supplied. The same purchase can involve both, but describe each separately if that is what happened. Do not substitute a broad quality judgment for a specific missing or nonfunctional feature.

What happens after I submit the request?
Valve must approve the request before a refund is issued. For an approved request, Valve says the full purchase refund is issued within a week of approval—not necessarily within a week of submitting the request.
The refund goes to the original payment method or the Steam Wallet. Valve says the Wallet is used if it cannot refund the original payment method. The published timing describes Valve’s service period after approval; it is not an independently measured processing result or a promise about how quickly a third-party payment provider will display the money. No separate handling fee or partial-refund formula is stated in the cited policy; the policy describes a full purchase refund when approved.
If the request is denied, Valve’s published policy still allows you to ask for review when a request is outside the usual limits, but the available policy information does not establish a guaranteed appeal process or a specific route for overturning a denial. Do not treat a chargeback as a routine substitute for contacting Steam Support.
Refund destination comparison
| Situation | Published result |
|---|---|
| Approved request and original payment method can be refunded | Valve says the full purchase refund goes to the original payment method. |
| Approved request and the original method cannot be refunded | Valve says the Steam Wallet is used. |
| Request submitted but not approved | No refund is issued unless Valve approves it. |
| Purchase made outside Steam | Valve cannot refund that transaction; contact the original seller. |
Does the purchase type change the refund route?
Yes. Steam can review purchases made through Steam, but it cannot refund transactions completed with an outside seller. Other Steam purchase types also have specific conditions, so check the rule that matches the item rather than assuming the base-game terms apply unchanged.
Games bought from another seller
A third-party CD key, boxed game, or Steam Wallet card bought elsewhere does not become refundable by Valve merely because it was redeemed or used on Steam. Contact the seller and check its terms; Valve cannot issue the refund for that outside purchase. Do not buy another external key as a workaround for a Steam refund—the seller, not Valve, controls that transaction’s refund terms.
DLC bought through Steam
Steam-store DLC has a 14-day request window and a playtime limit of less than two hours in the underlying game since the DLC purchase. The DLC must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred, and some third-party DLC is marked nonrefundable in advance. These are DLC-specific terms, not the base-game rule applied without modification.

For a DLC problem, identify the add-on purchase rather than selecting only the base game. Explain whether the issue is a missing advertised feature in the DLC, a failure in the underlying game, or a condition that means the DLC was already consumed or transferred. The applicable clock is tied to the DLC purchase and the underlying-game play described in Valve’s policy.
Pre-release games and Early Access
For an Early Access or Advance Access purchase, playtime before release counts toward the two-hour limit, while the 14-day period starts on the game’s release date. If a title cannot be played before release, Valve’s policy permits a refund request before release.

That makes the purchase date and release date distinct facts. In your explanation, identify whether you played during Early Access or Advance Access and whether the title had reached its release date. Do not assume that pre-release play is ignored simply because the normal 14-day period has not started.
Bundles, gifts, and VAC bans
Steam-store bundles have combined-usage and transfer conditions. If a gift has been redeemed, the recipient must take action before the purchaser can complete the refund request. A VAC ban removes the right to refund the affected game. These conditions can change the result even when a buyer’s situation otherwise resembles a standard base-game request.

If a bundle contains several products, avoid describing only one item’s playtime without checking the bundle’s combined-use conditions. For a redeemed gift, coordinate with the recipient because the purchaser cannot complete the refund on the recipient’s behalf until the required recipient action occurs. A VAC ban is a separate published restriction, not a technical defect that restores refund eligibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I make the request clearer?
A refund request is a review request, not a guaranteed remedy. Make it easy to understand what was bought, what failed or differed from the listing, and why you are asking Steam to review it.
- Select the exact purchase transaction rather than describing an unrelated game or order.
- Use a short sequence of observable details: what you expected from the stated feature, what happened instead, and when it happened.
- For a listing dispute, identify the particular advertised claim and explain the mismatch without overstating what the store page said.
- If you are outside the standard window, acknowledge that and ask for a review; do not describe the exception as an entitlement.
- For a purchase made outside Steam, contact the original seller instead of asking Valve to refund it.
- Keep the request focused on one purchase and one clearly described problem; avoid unsupported claims about what Valve must do.
Steam Support is the appropriate route for the account-specific purchase request. The available official policy information does not substantiate a particular approval rate, a mandatory evidence checklist, or a guaranteed procedure for appealing a denial.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need screenshots to get a Steam refund for a broken game?
Valve’s published policy does not establish screenshots as a requirement or say that sending them guarantees approval. If a screenshot helps explain a specific error or listing claim, you can describe what it shows in your request, but the decision remains Valve’s.

The published information cited here gives the refund terms and review route, but not an approval rate for broken-game or misrepresentation claims. A percentage should not be inferred from the policy thresholds.
Can I get a refund for a game I bought from a key reseller?
No. Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party keys and boxed games. The buyer needs to check the original seller’s own refund terms.

Can I refund a Steam game just because I do not like it?
The standard Steam offer allows a request for any reason if it is made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Outside those conditions, a request can still be submitted for review, but approval is not assured.
Where should I explain that a Steam game is not as advertised?
Open the transaction in Steam Support’s Purchases area, choose the closest available refund reason, and use the explanation field to identify the exact store-page claim, what happened in the game, and the impact. Valve does not publish a required wording template.
Can I get a refund after two hours if the game is broken?
You can submit a request and explain the specific failure, but exceeding two hours places it outside the standard offer. Valve says it will review such requests at its discretion; a defect does not automatically guarantee approval.
How long does an approved Steam refund take?
Valve says the full purchase refund is issued within a week of approval. It goes to the original payment method or, when that method cannot be refunded, the Steam Wallet. That timing is measured from approval, not necessarily from submission.
Does Early Access playtime count toward a Steam refund?
Yes. Valve’s policy says Early Access or Advance Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. For a pre-release purchase, the 14-day period starts on the release date; a title that cannot be played before release may be refundable before release.
Can a VAC ban affect my refund?
Yes. Valve’s published conditions state that a VAC ban removes the right to refund the affected game.

The Bottom Line
Use Steam Support for a Steam purchase, select the transaction under Purchases, and explain the exact defect or store-page mismatch. The ordinary game terms are 14 days and less than two hours; outside them you can still ask, but approval is discretionary. Valve cannot refund purchases made elsewhere, and an approved refund is issued within a week of approval to the original payment method or Steam Wallet.
