If Outlook’s columns, sorting, fonts, message grouping, or reading layout look wrong, reset the view for the affected folder. The correct command depends on which Outlook app is installed: in classic Outlook, select the folder and use View > Current View > Change View > Manage Views, then choose Reset View when that command is available. In new Outlook, Microsoft provides display controls under View and layout controls under Settings > Mail > Layout rather than one universal reset command.
First identify your edition. A Settings button in the upper-right indicates new Outlook; if that button is absent, treat the app as classic Outlook. The two editions have different menus, so following instructions for the wrong one can make the reset command appear to be missing.

How do I tell whether I have classic Outlook or new Outlook?
Look at the upper-right corner of the Outlook window before changing anything. Microsoft uses the presence of the Settings button as the quickest distinction between the two Windows apps.
| What you see | Edition to use | Where display controls are documented |
|---|---|---|
| A Settings button in the upper-right | New Outlook | View for quick display changes; Settings > Mail > Layout for message-list and reading-pane organization |
| No Settings button in the upper-right | Classic Outlook | View > Current View > Change View > Manage Views, with Reset View where the installed build provides it |
This check matters because Microsoft maintains separate control surfaces for the editions. A menu path that works in classic Outlook may not exist in new Outlook, and a new-Outlook layout setting will not appear in the classic ribbon.

How do I reset a folder in classic Outlook?
Classic Outlook resets the view attached to the folder you select. Work through the following sequence while the folder showing the unwanted arrangement is active.
- Open Outlook and select the affected folder. Click the Inbox, Sent Items, Calendar, or other folder whose columns, order, grouping, or typography are wrong. The selected folder determines which view you are managing.
- Open the View tab. Use the ribbon at the top of the classic Outlook window. Do not start in account settings; a view reset is a folder-display operation.
- Open the current-view controls. For a standard or named view, choose Current View > Change View > Manage Views. This opens the area Microsoft documents for selecting and managing views.
- Select the view you want to restore. If the folder uses a named or custom view, select that specific view rather than changing an unrelated view in the list.
- Choose Reset View when it is available. Select Reset View, then confirm the prompt. Availability can vary with the Outlook build, folder, and view you selected.
- Recheck the folder. Confirm that the expected columns, sorting, grouping, fonts, and other presentation choices have returned. If nothing changes, return to the edition check and verify that you worked in the correct folder and selected the intended view.
What if the folder uses a custom view?
Custom views are named configurations, so manage the named view itself instead of altering broad account preferences. In classic Outlook, the documented route is still View > Current View > Change View > Manage Views; select the custom view in that manager before looking for Reset View.
Why might Reset View not appear?
The command is not guaranteed to be visible in every classic Outlook build or for every selection. First verify that the app has no upper-right Settings button, that the affected folder is selected, and that you are in the current-view management controls. If those checks are correct and the command remains absent, the installed build may expose view management differently; avoid changing unrelated account settings simply to find it.
How do I change the layout in new Outlook?
New Outlook does not use the classic Outlook reset path as a universal command. Use the control that matches the part of the interface you want to change.
Use View for immediate display choices
Select the View tab in new Outlook for quick display changes. This is the appropriate starting point when the visible arrangement needs adjustment and you want to work with the controls shown in the current window.

Use Settings > Mail > Layout for organization options
For message-list organization and reading-pane choices, open Settings, choose Mail, and then choose Layout. This area contains the new-Outlook layout controls documented by Microsoft. Because these settings are separate from classic Outlook’s named-view manager, do not expect a classic Manage Views dialog in this edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Recheck the upper-right corner. Microsoft warns that instructions for one Outlook version may not work in the other. If a guide tells you to open Current View > Change View > Manage Views but your window has a Settings button, switch to the new-Outlook View or Settings > Mail > Layout controls instead.
What does resetting an Outlook view change?
Microsoft defines views as ways to look at items in a folder. A view can govern the folder’s fonts, item organization, columns, sorting, grouping, and related presentation settings. Resetting it therefore restores display arrangements for the selected view rather than changing the content of the mailbox.
| Area | Effect of a view reset or layout change |
|---|---|
| Columns and their order | Display arrangement can return to the default for the selected view. |
| Sorting, grouping, and item organization | Presentation rules associated with the view can be restored. |
| Fonts and other visual presentation | View-level typography and related display choices can return to their default arrangement. |
| Messages and account data | The cited Microsoft view documentation describes display settings; it does not say that resetting a view deletes messages or changes account data. |
That scope is why a reset should not be treated as a general Outlook repair. It addresses view customization; it is not documented as a fix for every problem involving synchronization, sign-in, missing mail, or account configuration.
Why does Outlook look different from before?
An unexpected appearance usually means that the active folder is using a different view or that the instructions being followed belong to another Outlook edition. Several visible changes can come from view customization without any message data changing.

A different view is active
Classic Outlook can apply different views to folders. If the selected folder is using a named view, its columns, sorting, grouping, and fonts may differ from another folder even when both contain mail. Open the current-view manager and identify the view associated with the folder before resetting anything.
A custom view was modified
A custom view can preserve deliberate choices such as extra columns or a particular sort order. Reset only after deciding that the default arrangement is wanted; otherwise, continue managing that named view rather than replacing it with an unrelated one.
The Outlook edition changed
Classic and new Outlook expose different controls. The presence or absence of the upper-right Settings button is the practical signal supplied by Microsoft. An online article written for the other edition can make familiar commands seem to have disappeared.
The installed build presents a different command set
Microsoft’s classic-Outlook documentation qualifies the reset step by noting that Reset View may be present in the installed build. A missing command is therefore a reason to confirm the folder, edition, and selected view before assuming that Outlook is damaged.

What is the difference between classic and new Outlook view controls?
The main difference is scope and location: classic Outlook centers on a selected folder’s named view, while new Outlook separates quick display choices from broader mail-layout settings.

How can I avoid resetting the wrong thing?
Use this short decision process before confirming a reset. It keeps a folder-specific display problem separate from account and message operations.
- Identify the edition. Settings button present means new Outlook; absent means classic Outlook.
- Identify the symptom. Columns, sorting, grouping, fonts, and reading-pane presentation are view or layout concerns. Missing messages or account access are not established as view-reset problems.
- Select the exact folder. A view operation begins with the folder whose appearance is wrong.
- Check for a named custom view. In classic Outlook, manage that view directly so you do not change a different configuration.
- Use only the matching path. Classic uses the current-view manager; new Outlook uses View or Settings > Mail > Layout.
- Confirm the result in the same folder. A successful change should be visible in the folder and view you selected, not necessarily everywhere in Outlook.
What should I do when the reset seems to have done nothing?
Do not repeat the command randomly. Check the conditions that determine which view is being changed.
- Look again at the upper-right corner to confirm the Outlook edition.
- Return to the folder where the unwanted arrangement is visible; another folder may be using a different view.
- In classic Outlook, open View > Current View > Change View > Manage Views and verify the selected named view.
- If Reset View is unavailable, treat that as a build or selection difference and do not substitute unrelated account settings.
- In new Outlook, use View for immediate display controls or Settings > Mail > Layout for message-list and reading-pane organization.
These checks address the documented view and layout controls. They do not promise to repair problems outside display customization.
Can one reset change every Outlook folder?
A classic Outlook reset is tied to the selected folder and view. If several folders look different, inspect each affected folder and its active view rather than assuming that one reset is global. New Outlook’s layout settings should likewise be understood according to the option’s displayed scope; Microsoft documents separate controls instead of one universal reset switch.
Practical checklist
- Is the upper-right Settings button visible?
- Did you select the folder whose layout is wrong?
- Are you using the controls for the correct Outlook edition?
- In classic Outlook, did you open Current View > Change View > Manage Views?
- Is the affected configuration a named custom view?
- Did you confirm that Reset View is available before looking for it elsewhere?
- After changing the setting, did you recheck the same folder and view?
Frequently Asked Questions
Will resetting an Outlook view delete my emails?
Microsoft describes views as folder-display arrangements, including columns, sorting, organization, and fonts. The cited view documentation does not describe a reset as deleting messages or changing account data, but it also should not be treated as a repair for missing-mail or synchronization problems.

Do I have to reset the Inbox and Sent Items separately?
A classic Outlook reset starts with the folder currently selected, so different folders can retain different view arrangements. Inspect each folder that looks wrong instead of assuming that a change in one folder applies everywhere.
Why can’t I find Manage Views in my Outlook window?
Manage Views is the classic Outlook path. If a Settings button appears in the upper-right, you are in new Outlook and should use View or Settings > Mail > Layout instead; if Settings is absent, verify that the affected folder and current-view controls are selected.

Can I keep a custom view and still restore the default later?
Yes, identify the named custom view before changing it. In classic Outlook, the Manage Views area lets you select the specific view, so you can avoid resetting a different view by mistake.
Does new Outlook have the same Reset View button as classic Outlook?
Microsoft documents separate controls for new Outlook rather than one universal classic-style Reset View command. Use the View tab for quick display changes and Settings > Mail > Layout for message-list organization and reading-pane options.
