Yes. You can reset Windows 10 without opening Settings by entering the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Select Keep my files or Remove everything, followed by Cloud download or Local reinstall.

Back up documents, photos, browser data, game saves and license information first, and find the BitLocker recovery key if the drive is encrypted. If Windows will not start, use Automatic Repair or a Windows installation USB instead.

What is the safest way to reset Windows 10 without Settings?

For a PC that still starts, WinRE is the shortest and least disruptive route. It runs outside the normal Windows desktop, so it remains available even when the Settings app is broken. From its blue recovery menu, Troubleshoot > Reset this PC provides the same core reset choices without requiring Settings.

Choose Keep my files when personal files must stay on the computer and you are troubleshooting software. Choose Remove everything when you are handing the PC to someone else, want a complete wipe, or accept losing all local data. Both options remove installed applications and reset Windows settings; the second also removes personal files.

If Windows cannot reach the desktop or WinRE itself fails, use Automatic Repair or bootable installation media. Installation media also gives you a clean-install option, which removes personal files, applications and manufacturer customizations.

Which reset path should I choose?

The right entry method depends on whether Windows can start and whether the built-in recovery files are usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Entry method Best used when Data choices Reinstall source
Shift + Restart Windows reaches the desktop or sign-in screen Keep my files or Remove everything Local reinstall or Cloud download
Automatic Repair Windows fails to start after repeated boot attempts Keep my files or Remove everything Local reinstall or Cloud download
USB installation media Windows cannot boot or built-in recovery is unavailable In-session setup can keep apps and files, keep files only, or keep nothing; a clean boot installation wipes the existing installation Windows files on the USB drive

Use WinRE Reset this PC for ordinary corruption, update failures or persistent software problems. Reserve a clean installation for a badly damaged system, suspected malware or a situation where a complete wipe is acceptable.

What should I do before starting the reset?

A reset can remove software and, depending on your selection, personal data. Preparation prevents an avoidable loss of files or a lockout after the reinstall.

Back up every file you cannot replace

  • Copy documents, photos, videos and projects to external storage or another trusted location.
  • Export browser bookmarks and save any browser data that is not synchronized.
  • Back up locally stored game saves and configuration files; a reset does not know which game data you consider valuable.
  • Record application license information, recovery codes and any installation media you will need again.

Find the BitLocker recovery key

If the system drive is encrypted, WinRE may request the BitLocker recovery key before allowing access to recovery tools. Locate that key before you begin; being unable to provide it can prevent you from reaching the reset controls or recovering files.

Prepare power and network

Connect a laptop to AC power and avoid relying on a nearly empty battery. Cloud download requires a stable internet connection, while Local reinstall uses recovery files already stored on the PC. Do not start a reset if an unexpected shutdown is likely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the Windows edition

If you later reinstall from USB, the edition must match the device’s digital license, such as Windows 10 Home with Home. Write down whether the current installation is Home or Pro before wiping it.

How do I reset a working Windows 10 PC from WinRE?

Use this procedure when you can reach the Windows desktop or sign-in screen but cannot use Settings.

  1. Save your backups and connect the PC to power. If encryption is enabled, make sure the BitLocker recovery key is available.
  2. Hold the Shift key.
  3. While still holding Shift, select the Power icon and choose Restart. You can do this from the Start menu or the sign-in screen.
  4. Release Shift when the blue recovery menu appears.
  5. Select Troubleshoot, then Reset this PC.
  6. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
  7. Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
  8. Read the summary of what will be removed, confirm the reset and leave the computer connected to power.

The machine may restart more than once. The display can remain black for a long period during the process; that does not by itself indicate failure. Do not press the power button or force a restart while the reset is running.

What is the difference between Keep my files and Remove everything?

These choices determine whether Windows preserves personal files, not whether it preserves installed programs. Both reset paths remove applications and Windows settings, so you should expect to reinstall desktop software afterward.

Choice Personal files Installed apps Windows settings Typical use
Keep my files Retained Removed Reset Troubleshoot software while preserving user files
Remove everything Removed Removed Reset Full wipe, transfer to another user or severe corruption

“Keep my files” is not a backup. Files stored in locations Windows does not preserve, data belonging to removed applications and files on other affected partitions can still be at risk. Make an independent backup even when you intend to keep files.

“Remove everything” is the appropriate choice only when you have verified that nothing remaining on the Windows installation is needed. Check external drives and cloud folders separately so you do not mistake a synchronized placeholder for a complete offline copy.

Should I choose Cloud download or Local reinstall?

Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows copy from Microsoft. Local reinstall uses the recovery files already on the device, so it avoids downloading the installation image but depends on those local files being intact.

Option What it uses Choose it when Requirement or limitation
Cloud download A fresh Windows copy downloaded from Microsoft Local recovery files may be damaged or you want a newly downloaded image Reliable internet access and sufficient time for the download
Local reinstall Recovery files already stored on the PC You need to avoid a download or the connection is unavailable Fails or reproduces problems if the local recovery image is corrupted

Neither source changes the retention decision. You still select Keep my files or Remove everything first. If Local reinstall reports missing or unusable files, return to WinRE and use Cloud download if networking works, or move to installation media.

How can I reset Windows 10 when it will not start?

Windows should enter Automatic Repair after two interrupted startup attempts, with the recovery screen appearing on the third boot. This route is useful when normal startup is unavailable, but deliberately interrupting boot can risk data loss. Use it only when the computer cannot start normally.

  1. Turn on the computer and allow startup to begin.
  2. If Windows hangs or fails to continue, interrupt the startup process. Repeat once more; after two interrupted attempts, Windows should launch Automatic Repair on the next boot.
  3. On the Automatic Repair screen, select Advanced options.
  4. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  5. Select Keep my files or Remove everything, then choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
  6. Keep the machine connected to power and do not interrupt the reset once it starts.

If Automatic Repair never appears, the recovery partition or startup environment may be damaged. In that case, create Windows installation media on another working computer.

How do I use a USB drive to reach recovery tools?

Microsoft specifies a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB for Windows installation media. Creating the media requires another working PC and a USB drive whose contents you can erase.

  1. On the working computer, create official Windows 10 installation media on an empty USB drive of at least 8 GB.
  2. Insert the USB drive into the affected PC.
  3. Start the affected PC and boot from the USB drive. The exact boot-menu key varies by manufacturer; use the machine’s documented boot selector if the normal Windows logo does not appear.
  4. When Windows Setup opens, select your language and keyboard choices, then select Next.
  5. Do not select the install command for a clean wipe yet. Choose Repair my PC to open WinRE.
  6. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC and choose the retention and reinstall options.

This approach reaches the same Reset this PC workflow without relying on the damaged internal recovery environment. Keep the USB drive available until you have confirmed that Windows starts normally.

What reinstall choices are available from installation media?

When Windows is still running, you can also launch Setup from installation media and reinstall without first booting from the USB. Microsoft lists three retention choices for that in-session setup:

  • Keep personal files and apps: preserves personal files and installed applications while reinstalling Windows.
  • Keep personal files only: preserves personal files but removes applications.
  • Keep nothing: removes personal files and applications.

The exact choices depend on how Setup was started and whether the existing installation is compatible. Read the confirmation screen carefully before proceeding, because a choice that removes nothing cannot be recovered by canceling later.

When should I perform a clean installation?

A clean installation is appropriate when the existing Windows installation is badly corrupted, malware is suspected, or you explicitly want a complete wipe. Booting from the installation media and installing Windows over the existing installation removes personal files, applications and manufacturer customizations. Back up first and ensure the Windows edition on the media matches the device’s digital license.

What should gamers check before resetting?

A reset can leave a gaming PC unable to launch its usual software until applications and drivers are installed again. Treat game data as personal data unless you have verified that a particular title synchronizes every save.

  • Back up local save folders, screenshots, clips and custom configuration files.
  • Record account details, product keys and license information needed to reinstall games and utilities.
  • Export browser data used for game services or two-factor authentication, and retain recovery codes.
  • Disconnect external backup drives that should not be included in a wipe.
  • After reset, reinstall essential drivers and applications before restoring backed-up files.

Keep my files reduces the chance of losing personal data but still removes installed games and launchers. Remove everything and a clean installation require you to restore both software and data from your backups.

What can go wrong during a reset, and how do I recover?

The reset option is missing

If Reset this PC does not appear in WinRE, restart into recovery from Windows installation media and select Repair my PC. This loads recovery tools from the USB instead of the internal recovery partition.

Cloud download cannot connect

Use Local reinstall if the local recovery files are healthy and internet access is unavailable. If the local image is damaged, create installation media on another PC and use that as the reinstall source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PC appears frozen on a black screen

A black screen can persist for a long period while reset operations run. Leave the computer connected to power and wait; forcing a shutdown can interrupt file operations and make Windows unbootable.

BitLocker asks for a key

Enter the recovery key you located before starting. Without it, encrypted data may remain inaccessible even if the reset itself can continue.

Windows returns to recovery repeatedly

If repeated resets do not produce a working installation, stop retrying the same path. Use installation media, verify the edition selection, and perform a clean installation only after confirming that your backups are complete.

Does Windows 10 support still matter after a reset?

Microsoft states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” A reset reinstalls Windows 10; it does not extend that support lifecycle. After recovery, plan for the support implications of remaining on Windows 10 and keep your backup and security practices current.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The end-of-support date does not change the WinRE steps, the retention choices or the need to match a Windows edition to the device’s digital license. It does mean that a reset should be treated as system recovery, not as a way to obtain a newer supported operating system.

What is the final checklist before I select Reset?

  • Backups of documents, photos, browser data, game saves and license information are readable from another location.
  • The BitLocker recovery key is available if encryption is enabled.
  • The laptop is connected to AC power.
  • You know whether you want Keep my files or Remove everything.
  • You know whether Cloud download or Local reinstall is suitable.
  • If using USB media, the drive is at least 8 GB and can be erased.
  • The Windows edition you will reinstall matches the device’s digital license.
  • You understand that applications and settings will need to be configured again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset Windows 10 without an internet connection?

Yes, Local reinstall uses recovery files already stored on the PC and can work without downloading Windows. Cloud download needs a reliable internet connection, so choose Local reinstall or use USB installation media when networking is unavailable.

Will a reset reactivate the same Windows edition?

Reinstall the edition that matches the device’s digital license, such as Home with Home. Choosing a different edition can prevent the existing license from applying automatically.

Can I cancel a reset after it has started?

There is no safe point at which to assume cancellation is harmless. Interrupting power while Windows is replacing files can leave the installation unbootable, so decide on backups and retention choices before confirming.

Why would USB installation media be better than Reset this PC?

USB media remains useful when the internal recovery image is missing, corrupted or inaccessible because Windows will not boot. It also provides a clean-install route when a complete wipe is intentional.
