If you are already signed in, change your Steam password in Steam > Settings (called Preferences on Mac) > Security > Change Password. Steam emails a five-character verification code; enter it and create a password you have not used before. If you are locked out, begin at the official Steam Help site, choose Help, I can’t sign in, and follow the recovery route that matches your problem. When automatic recovery cannot verify you, submit the Support form with ownership evidence and an email address you can access.
The correct route depends on whether you can still sign in, whether your email or phone works, and whether you suspect someone else took control. The steps below separate those cases so you do not send credentials to a scammer or accidentally lock yourself out further.

How do I change my Steam password while I am still signed in?
A signed-in account can be changed from the Steam client without using the lost-account form. Steam sends a verification message to the account’s email address before allowing the new password.
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left menu. On macOS, this menu is labeled Preferences.
- Open Settings (or Preferences on Mac), then choose Security.
- Select Change Password.
- Check the email address connected to the account and enter Steam’s five-character verification code.
- Choose a new password that is not one of your previous Steam passwords, then save the change.
If the verification message does not appear, use the email troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly guessing codes. Keep the Steam client open while you check the correct inbox and spam folder.

What should I do if I cannot sign in to Steam?
Use Steam’s official recovery site, not a search-advertisement support number or a message from someone claiming to be a moderator. Go to https://help.steampowered.com/, select Help, I can’t sign in, choose the closest description of the problem, and complete the self-recovery prompts.
- Open Steam Help.
- Choose Help, I can’t sign in.
- Select the matching issue: forgotten password or account name, a stolen account, a Steam Guard problem, or another listed option.
- Enter the requested account, email, phone, or verification details exactly as prompted.
- Follow the automated recovery instructions. If Steam cannot complete recovery, continue to the Support intake form.
- Give Support an email address you can currently open so you can receive replies, and provide the ownership information requested in the form.
Steam states that Support is handled exclusively through help.steampowered.com. A legitimate representative will never ask for your Steam password.

How can I recover a forgotten Steam account name or password?
Steam’s lost-account flow can search for an account and then escalate to a Support review if the automated checks fail. Start with any email address you may have used, following the field instructions on the recovery page if you are unsure which address is current.
When you remember the email address
Enter that address in the lost-account form and complete the verification steps. If Steam finds a matching account, use the link or code it supplies to reset the password. The new password should be unique to Steam; reusing an old or breached password can let an attacker back in through another service.
When you remember the account name instead
Choose the option that lets you search by account name and provide the name exactly as you used it. Your public profile name may differ from the private Steam login name, so try historical login names rather than only the name friends see.
When the automated search finds nothing
Use the Support intake option shown by the recovery flow. Steam asks for proof that you own the account and may ask for possible login names and email addresses. Give several accurate possibilities rather than inventing details; incorrect guesses can slow the review.
What if I no longer have access to the email address on my Steam account?
You can still request recovery, but you must tell Steam Support that the old contact address is inaccessible. In the Support form, enter an email account you can open now; that is where Support can send its response.

Include the ownership information Steam requests, such as previous account login names and email addresses associated with the account. If you do regain access to the old mailbox later, secure it immediately with a new password and multifactor protection, but do not delay the Steam request while waiting for that to happen.
An inaccessible email address does not automatically mean the account is lost. Steam’s recovery process is designed to move to a Support review when self-recovery cannot verify the account.
How do I recover a Steam account that was stolen or hijacked?
Treat a suspected takeover as both an account-recovery problem and a device-security incident. Resetting Steam first, while malware is still recording keystrokes, can simply reveal the new password to the attacker.
1. Clean the computer before entering new credentials
Scan the computer for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, and other malicious software. Use a trusted, up-to-date security tool and remove or quarantine anything it finds. If the machine cannot be trusted, perform the recovery from a separate clean device.
2. Secure the email account linked to Steam
Change the email account’s password before submitting new Steam credentials. Review its recovery addresses, phone numbers, forwarding rules, active sessions, and multifactor settings for changes you did not make. An attacker who controls the mailbox can intercept Steam reset messages.
3. Use only official Steam pages
Open https://help.steampowered.com/ yourself and select Help, I can’t sign in. Do not give a password, Steam Guard code, or payment detail to a person who contacts you through chat, a game community, or social media. Steam specifically says its representatives never ask for your password.
4. Provide evidence of ownership
Steam’s recovery guidance asks for proof of ownership, possible Steam login names, and possible email addresses. Gather those details before you open the Support form. Steam says you can contact Support even if another person changed the account’s email address, password, and phone number.

5. Follow the Support response carefully
Use an accessible reply address and answer follow-up questions from the same Support case. Never send your current password in a ticket. If a message asks for it, stop and return to the official Help site rather than replying.
Why am I not receiving my Steam Guard code?
Steam Guard can deliver a sign-in code by email or generate one in the Steam Mobile app, depending on your account settings. First identify which method your account uses; requesting an email code will not fix a mobile-authenticator sign-in.
Email Steam Guard messages
- Check the inbox for the email address currently linked to Steam, not an old address or a different account.
- Check spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and other filtered folders.
- Add
[email protected]and[email protected]to the mailbox’s allowed-sender list. - Request a new code once, then wait for delivery. Some email providers delay automated messages.
- If no message arrives after three hours, contact Steam Support through help.steampowered.com.
Use the newest code you receive. Older messages can arrive after a delay and may no longer be valid.
Mobile authenticator codes
The Steam Mobile authenticator displays a code that changes every 30 seconds. Each code is usable once, so enter the currently displayed code rather than one from a screenshot or an earlier attempt. Keep the phone’s date and time set automatically; a substantially incorrect clock can interfere with time-based codes.

Steam lists several recovery routes, and the best one depends on whether the phone number and backup material are still available.
Replace the phone or SIM
If possible, ask your mobile carrier to replace the lost SIM or restore the number on a new phone. Once the number is working, use Steam’s SMS recovery option in the sign-in flow.
Use SMS recovery
An SMS route is available only when a phone number is attached to the Steam account and Steam offers that option for the account. Enter the received code in the official recovery flow; do not share the message with anyone else.

Use a previously generated backup or recovery code
When you enabled the mobile authenticator, Steam may have provided emergency recovery codes. Enter one of those unused codes when prompted. Treat the remaining codes as sensitive credentials and store them somewhere that is not dependent on the lost phone.

If you cannot replace the number and have no unused recovery code, use Help, I can’t sign in and choose the Steam Guard or authenticator problem. Support may request ownership evidence before restoring access.
Which recovery option should I use?

What ownership information should I prepare for Steam Support?
Support needs enough information to distinguish the real owner from someone who merely knows a public profile name. Prepare a concise, consistent history before opening the ticket.
- Every Steam login name you may have used, including older names.
- Current and previous email addresses associated with the account.
- The phone number that was attached, if any.
- Approximate dates or circumstances surrounding the loss of access.
- Any account or purchase information the Support form specifically requests.
- An email address you can access for the Support reply.
Only submit information through the official Support form. Do not post ownership details publicly or send them to a third party offering “recovery” services.

How do I remove an attacker’s devices after I regain access?
Changing the password is not the only cleanup step. A previously authorized computer can remain trusted until you remove it.
- Sign in and open Account Details.
- Select Manage Steam Guard.
- Use the option to deauthorize previously authorized computers or devices you do not recognize, or all devices if you are unsure which are yours.
- Sign in again only on devices you control and trust.
- Review the email account linked to Steam for unfamiliar sessions, forwarding rules, recovery changes, or password resets.
- Keep the new Steam password unique and do not reuse it on your email account or other services.
Deauthorization is especially important after using Steam on a public computer or after a compromise, because an attacker may still have an authorized session even after the password changes.

How long should Steam recovery take, and when should I follow up?
Email delivery can be delayed by the provider; Steam advises contacting Support after three hours without a verification message. That three-hour guidance concerns a missing email, not a guaranteed resolution time for a Support case.
Keep the ticket’s reply address accessible and monitor its spam folder. Steam notes that an open help request can expire 14 days after Steam Support’s last response, so answer follow-up questions promptly. If a case expires, return to Steam Help and start the appropriate sign-in problem again.
How can I avoid losing access to Steam again?
- Use a long, unique Steam password and never share it, even with someone claiming to be Support.
- Keep the email account attached to Steam protected with its own unique password and multifactor authentication.
- Keep a phone number attached if you are comfortable using SMS recovery, and update it when your number changes.

Can I use an old Steam Guard code that arrived late?
