Do not launch the game when Steam shows a Cloud conflict. First compare the local and cloud copies, their timestamps, the computer used for each session, and the progress visible in each save. Back up the local save folder, then select the copy that matches the playthrough you want. “Local” is not automatically safer and “cloud” is not automatically newer.
If neither copy clearly represents your latest good session, preserve both and investigate the game’s save structure before making a choice. A deliberate comparison is the safest way to avoid overwriting progress that Steam cannot restore later.

What a Steam Cloud conflict means
Steam displays a synchronization conflict when the local files on your computer differ from the corresponding files stored in Steam Cloud. Steam cannot decide which copy should win because the file was changed in two places without an intervening synchronization. Steam Support describes the situation this way: “Because the file was modified in two different locations without a synchronization between them, Steam cannot automatically pick which version of the file to keep.”
This is usually a data-state problem, not proof that Steam Cloud itself is broken. A common sequence is playing on one computer, Steam Deck, or another installation while offline, then playing or closing the game elsewhere before the first session has uploaded. When you reconnect, Steam sees two legitimate-looking versions and asks you to choose.

Steam Cloud is configured on a game-by-game basis. Developers decide which files are replicated; those files can include saves, settings, profiles, or other user data. The exact save format, file names, and cross-platform behavior therefore differ by title. A Steam store-page Cloud indicator confirms support exists, but it does not guarantee that Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck use identical save files or profiles.
Resolve the conflict safely: the complete workflow
1. Stop before selecting “Play game”
When the warning appears, do not bypass it by launching immediately. Steam warns that ignoring an unresolved synchronization problem and choosing to play can result in lost data or progress. Starting the game may cause it to read one copy, write new data, and leave the other copy difficult to recover.
Leave the conflict dialog open if possible. If you already closed it without choosing, do not start the game again; reopen Steam and look for the pending synchronization notice before changing files.
2. Read what Steam reports for both copies
Identify which entry represents the local files and which represents the cloud files. Record the displayed modification date and time for each. Note the device name or computer associated with the last session when Steam provides one. The two entries are candidates, not recommendations: the labels alone do not tell you which save contains the progress you want.
Write down any details that can distinguish your sessions:
- The computer, operating system, or Steam Deck used most recently.
- The last quest, level, map, character, inventory change, or save slot you remember.
- Whether the session happened while Steam was offline.
- Whether the game closed normally and had time to synchronize.
- Whether another device may have uploaded an older or unwanted state.
3. Match the timestamps to your real play history
Steam Support says the most recently modified version is usually the likely choice. Treat that as a starting point, not an automatic rule. A timestamp is useful only when it corresponds to a session you recognize. For example, a newer cloud time could belong to a short session on another computer that loaded an old save and synchronized it; a newer local time could reflect the offline session where you actually completed a major quest.

Compare the displayed times with your own timeline. Check the time zone shown by your operating system and allow for a device whose clock may have been incorrect. If the date, device, and remembered progress agree, confidence in that candidate is high. If they conflict with your memory, do not select the newest entry merely because it is newest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Back up the local files before resolving anything
Make an independent copy of the relevant local save data before clicking a choice. Copy the entire game-specific folder to another directory, an external disk, or a USB flash drive. Keep the backup separate from the Steam installation and do not edit the original while comparing files.
The default Steam Cloud userdata locations are:
| Operating system | Default userdata location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Inside userdata, Steam uses account- and app-specific folders. The exact game save path is title-specific, and some games keep additional data elsewhere. Do not assume that every visible file is a save or that every save is in the same folder. If you cannot identify the game’s folder, copy the relevant account and app folder rather than deleting or moving files at random.
5. Select the known-good copy
Choose the version whose timestamp, device, profile or character, and in-game progress all match the playthrough you intend to keep. “Local” means the copy currently on this computer; it does not mean it is the newest or healthiest. “Cloud” means the copy uploaded to Steam; it can be older, especially after an offline session or an upload from another machine.
Use this comparison when deciding:
| Evidence | What a matching result tells you |
|---|---|
| Modification timestamp | The copy was changed at a particular time, but the time must correspond to a real session. |
| Device used | The copy came from the computer or Steam Deck where you remember playing. |
| Quest, level, character, or slot | The save contains recognizable progress rather than an unwanted older state. |
| Offline status | A local file may contain work that had not yet uploaded when you disconnected. |
| Normal shutdown | The game likely had an opportunity to finish writing its save before closing. |
| Game Cloud implementation | The title actually synchronizes the save files you are inspecting. |
6. Preserve both when the evidence is ambiguous
If the timestamps do not fit your memory, keep the backup and do not guess. Preserve the original local files, note the cloud timestamp, and identify the game’s save slots and profile structure. Some games maintain several rotating saves, automatic backups, or separate profiles; choosing a single file without understanding that structure can remove an option you needed.

The point of preserving both is to leave a recovery path while you determine which version contains the desired progress. A title-specific support article or community guide may explain its save naming and profile layout; Steam’s generic conflict dialog cannot.

7. Launch only after making a deliberate choice
After selecting the known-good version, start the game and make a small test save. Exit normally and wait for Steam to finish synchronization before closing the client or switching devices. Confirm that the test save appears on the intended device only after the synchronization indicator has completed.
A test save verifies that the game can write to the chosen location and that Steam is no longer presenting the same unresolved state. It does not prove that every platform-specific file is identical, so continue to follow the title’s own save guidance when moving between operating systems.
Why conflicts appear after reconnecting
Offline Mode delays the upload
When you play in Offline Mode, Steam cannot upload changed files. Those local changes remain pending until you reconnect. If another computer has meanwhile uploaded a different version, Steam encounters two modifications with no synchronization between them and presents the conflict.

Playing on a second computer, Steam Deck, or another installation can create the same condition even when neither session was intentionally offline. If the first device did not complete its upload before shutdown, the second device may download an older cloud copy, modify it, and later compete with the original local files.
An interrupted or abnormal close
A game that crashes, is force-quit, or is closed while writing can leave a partial or older save. Steam may still see a file modification and offer it as a candidate. This is why “closed normally” is an important part of your comparison rather than a guarantee that the newest timestamp is correct.
Steam Cloud settings and title-specific behavior
You can enable or disable Steam Cloud globally in the Steam client’s Cloud settings, and you can change it for an individual game in that game’s Properties. Steam’s labels and menu locations can change between client releases, so use the current Cloud setting shown in your client rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Disabling or enabling the setting does not merge two existing saves. It changes whether Steam synchronizes the files configured for that title. Developers define those files through Steamworks, and the set may include saves, settings, profile data, or other user-specific content. One game may synchronize a single save directory while another uses several files or platform-specific locations.
Steamworks documentation states that configured files are replicated after a game session and downloaded before launch on another computer. A conflict can therefore arise when a session ends before replication, when a device is offline, or when the title’s implementation treats platforms differently.
For cross-platform play, verify the game’s own documentation or trusted community guidance. A title can display the Steam Cloud indicator while still using different save formats, profiles, or paths on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck. Do not infer identical behavior solely from the presence of the indicator.

The userdata directory is the starting point for local Cloud data, but its account and app folders are not self-explanatory. Avoid deleting files while browsing. Copy first, then inspect dates and file names in the duplicate.
Steam records Cloud activity in cloud_log.txt under the Steam logs directory:

| Operating system | Steam logs location |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogs |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/logs |
Open cloud_log.txt in a copy if you need to examine upload or download activity around the conflict. Match log times with the session you remember. A log can show synchronization activity, but it cannot determine whether the underlying save represents the progress you wanted; use it alongside the timestamps and in-game evidence.

If your recent progress is missing
Check the previous machine first
If moving to another computer removed recent progress, the previous machine may still contain the original local files. This can happen when the old session ended before synchronization completed. If that machine is available, connect it to the internet, open Steam, and allow synchronization to finish before launching the game. Recheck the conflict information on the newer machine afterward.
Do not immediately start the game on the old machine if Steam presents another choice. Compare its local files with the cloud copy and preserve them before selecting anything, just as you would on the new machine.
Confirm that the game actually uses Cloud for saves
Many games do not use Steam Cloud for save files, even if you expected them to. The store-page indicator and the client setting do not establish that every save is synchronized. Check the title’s documentation and inspect its local save location. If the game never configured its saves for Cloud, a missing file may exist only on the original computer.

Steam Support cannot promise restoration after one version has overwritten another and no original copy remains. Cloud synchronization is not a versioned backup system that guarantees an older state can be retrieved. The practical protection is the independent copy you make before resolving the conflict.
Troubleshooting branches before you choose
The cloud timestamp is newer, but it shows an older playthrough
Do not select it solely because it is newer. A later upload from another device can contain an earlier quest or character state. Preserve the local folder, verify the device and save slot, and choose the local copy only if it matches the progress you want. If the local copy is also unclear, retain both and seek title-specific save information.
The local timestamp is newer, but you played on another device
Check whether the local time reflects an offline session, an automatic save, or a failed shutdown rather than your latest successful play. Compare the in-game slot and device history. A local file is appropriate only when its contents match the intended progress and the game closed cleanly enough to write it.
The conflict returns after you made a choice
Stop launching repeatedly. Make a fresh backup, inspect cloud_log.txt, and verify that Steam Cloud is enabled for the title and globally. Confirm that the game is not being run simultaneously on another device and that the selected save path is the one the title actually synchronizes. Repeated conflicts can indicate that two devices are still changing the same files or that the title uses multiple save locations.
The game opens but the expected character or slot is absent
Exit without creating new saves that could overwrite the candidates. Restore your independent backup to a separate working copy, identify the game’s profile and slot files, and compare them with the cloud and local versions. Because save structures are title-specific, use the game developer’s instructions for interpreting those files rather than renaming files at random.
Quick Recap
Preventing the next conflict
- Before switching devices, close the game normally and wait for Steam to finish its synchronization indicator.
- Avoid starting the same game on two devices while one is offline or still uploading.
- Keep periodic copies of important local save folders, especially for games with long campaigns or limited recovery options.
- Confirm the game’s Cloud setting and its documented save locations before moving between operating systems.
- When Steam presents a conflict, compare the session history instead of choosing a side based on the words “local” or “cloud.”
- After resolving a conflict, make a small test save and allow synchronization to complete before closing Steam.
Decision checklist
- Stop and do not launch through the unresolved warning.
- Record the local and cloud timestamps, devices, and any displayed details.
- Compare each candidate with your last known quest, level, character, profile, and save slot.
- Consider whether either session was offline or ended abnormally.
- Copy the local save folder and keep the backup separate.
- Select the candidate that matches the progress you actually want.
- If neither is clear, preserve both and investigate the title’s save structure.
- Launch, make a small test save, and wait for synchronization to finish.
