If the left navigation pane has disappeared from File Explorer, it is usually hidden by a view setting—not deleted. In Windows 11, press Windows+E, choose View on the command bar, select Show, and turn on Navigation pane. In Windows 10, open File Explorer, select the View tab, and select Navigation pane. The sidebar should return immediately.
If the pane is visible but folders such as Documents or Downloads are absent, you have a different problem: Windows 11 version 22H2 and later place six known folders in Quick access and the left pane rather than listing them under This PC by default. The steps below separate a hidden pane, missing pinned folders, Explorer failures, and restrictions imposed by a managed computer.

How do I get the navigation pane back in Windows 11?
Use the View menu in File Explorer. Windows 11 puts the control inside a second-level Show menu, so selecting View alone is not enough.
- Press Windows+E to open File Explorer.
- Select View on the command bar at the top of the window.
- Point to or select Show.
- Select Navigation pane.
The left sidebar should now be visible in the File Explorer window. The setting changes the Explorer view; it does not delete files, folders, drives, or shortcuts. If the pane appears but its contents are different from what you expect, continue to the section about Quick access and known folders.

What should I see after enabling it?
The restored pane contains locations such as Home, Quick access, This PC, and any folders or network locations that your account is allowed to display. The exact list depends on your Windows version, pinned items, connected drives, and device policy. A pane that opens but lacks one particular folder is therefore not evidence that the pane setting failed.
Where is the navigation-pane setting in Windows 10?
Windows 10 uses a different ribbon layout. Open File Explorer, select the View tab, and select Navigation pane directly.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows+E or open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Select the View tab in the ribbon.
- Select Navigation pane in the Panes group.
Unlike Windows 11, Windows 10 does not place this command under View > Show. If you are following Windows 11 instructions on a Windows 10 computer, you will not find the same submenu.
What is the difference between a hidden pane and missing folders?
A hidden pane means the entire left column is absent. Missing folders mean the column is present, but one or more expected locations—often Desktop, Documents, or Downloads—are not listed where you remember seeing them.
| Symptom | Likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| No left column at all | Navigation pane is turned off in the current Explorer view | Use the Windows 11 or Windows 10 View path above |
| Left column is present, but a known folder is absent | The folder is not pinned to Quick access, or Windows 11 is showing it in a different location | Check Home and pin the folder again |
| Explorer does not open, freezes, or closes | An Explorer or Windows system problem rather than a view preference | Follow the update, restart, system-file, and repair sequence |
| Locations are unavailable only on a work or school computer | A device-management policy may restrict them | Ask the administrator to review the Explorer policy |
Why are Desktop, Documents, or Downloads missing from This PC in Windows 11?
Starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft changed the default placement of six known folders: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos. They are pinned by default in Quick access and the left navigation pane, and they are no longer displayed under This PC by default.

This is a navigation change, not a deletion. The folders and their contents remain on the computer. You can reach them from Home or Quick access, and you can pin an individual folder again if it has been unpinned.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I pin a missing known folder back to Quick access?
- Open File Explorer and go to Home.
- Select the up arrow beside the address bar to move to the folder’s parent location when necessary.
- Find the folder you want to restore, such as Documents or Downloads.
- Right-click the folder, or press and hold it on a touch device.
- Choose Pin to Quick access.
The folder should then appear in Quick access and in the navigation pane. Repeat the process for each of the six known folders you want readily available. Pinning changes the shortcut list; it does not move the folder or create a second copy.
What if the folder is present under Home but not under This PC?
That arrangement is expected on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. The default location for these six folders is Quick access and the left pane, while This PC emphasizes drives and other computer locations. Use the pin command if you want a folder to be prominent, rather than trying to repair the pane itself.
What should I do if turning on Navigation pane does nothing?
If the menu option is available but Explorer does not redraw the sidebar, treat the issue as an Explorer or Windows stability problem. Work through the least disruptive checks before attempting repair.
1. Check for Windows updates
Open Windows Settings and check for available updates, then restart if Windows requests it. Updates can correct shell and File Explorer defects, and a pending restart can leave Explorer components in an inconsistent state.

2. Restart the device
Use a full Windows restart rather than merely closing the File Explorer window. After signing in, open a new Explorer window with Windows+E and test the View setting again.
3. Check for missing or corrupted system files
When Explorer is crashing, refusing to open, or ignoring view changes, use Windows’ built-in system-file checking and repair tools from an elevated command prompt according to Microsoft’s current support guidance. These tools examine protected Windows components; they are different from deleting Explorer history or changing a random registry value.
4. Use Automatic Repair when Windows itself will not start correctly
If Explorer failure is part of a broader startup problem, Automatic Repair is the appropriate escalation. It is intended for Windows startup and system recovery issues, not as the first response to a merely hidden sidebar. Back up important files and follow the recovery prompts carefully, because repair options can restart the computer several times.
5. Windows 10 maintenance tools
Windows 10 support documentation also describes a system-maintenance troubleshooter and cleanup or performance steps. These are useful when Explorer is slow, unstable, or affected by wider maintenance problems, but they are unnecessary when the View toggle restores the pane normally.
Can a work or school administrator hide locations?
Yes. On managed Windows 11 editions, File Explorer policies can restrict which locations appear. Microsoft Learn documents the SetAllowedFolderLocations policy and policies that control whether This PC or Network is shown.

Policy is likely when the navigation pane itself is visible, the View command works, and the same locations remain unavailable after restarting—but the restriction occurs only on a work or school device. In that situation, ask the device administrator or IT team to review the applied Explorer policy. Do not change random registry values or attempt to bypass a company restriction; a policy refresh can simply restore the setting you were trying to override.
How can I distinguish policy from a local view problem?
- Local view problem: the entire pane disappears and returns when you enable Navigation pane.
- Quick access problem: the pane is present, but a folder is not pinned; pinning it restores the shortcut.
- Policy restriction: a managed computer consistently omits This PC, Network, or allowed folder locations even though the pane and View controls work.
- System failure: File Explorer freezes, closes, or fails to launch, so menu settings cannot be used reliably.
What are the Windows 11 and Windows 10 differences?
The commands look similar but are not interchangeable. This table puts the practical differences side by side.
| Item | Windows 11 | Windows 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Menu path | View > Show > Navigation pane | View tab > Navigation pane |
| Known-folder default | From version 22H2, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos are pinned in Quick access and the left pane; they are not under This PC by default | The documented View control is available; the Windows 11 version 22H2 known-folder change does not describe this layout |
| Support lifecycle | Current Windows 11 support depends on the installed edition and servicing status | Microsoft support ended October 14, 2025 |
Is Windows 10 still safe to use for this problem?
Windows 10 can still display the Navigation pane control and the documented steps can still work on an existing installation. However, Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That means the operating system no longer receives Microsoft’s free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
A missing sidebar is therefore a small usability issue, but it is also a reminder to plan an upgrade or replacement path that meets your hardware, application, and organizational requirements. Do not confuse the fact that a setting still works with the operating system still receiving security maintenance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes make the problem harder to solve?
- Using the wrong menu path: Windows 11 requires View > Show; Windows 10 exposes Navigation pane directly on the View tab.
- Assuming a missing folder means deleted data: on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, known folders may simply be located in Quick access instead of This PC.
- Resetting the registry first: registry changes can create new Explorer problems and are not needed for a normal hidden-pane setting.
- Running repair tools for a simple toggle: update and recovery steps are for Explorer or Windows failures, not for a pane that was intentionally hidden.
- Ignoring management controls: a work or school computer may be following an administrator’s allowed-location policy.
When should I escalate beyond the View setting?
Escalate when File Explorer cannot stay open, the pane setting repeatedly resets, system files appear damaged, or the computer has broader startup problems. Start with updates and a restart, then use system-file checks and Automatic Repair when the symptoms justify them. If only selected locations are missing on a managed device, contact the administrator instead of treating it as a personal Explorer preference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open File Explorer without clicking its taskbar icon?
Yes. Press Windows+E, which opens a new File Explorer window on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can then use the version-appropriate View path to restore the sidebar.
Will pinning a folder to Quick access move or duplicate my files?
No. Pinning creates a navigation shortcut to the existing folder. The files stay in their original location, and removing the pin later does not delete the folder or its contents.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does my personal computer show Network or This PC differently from another computer?
File Explorer contents can differ by Windows version, connected drives, pinned shortcuts, and applied device-management policies. On a managed Windows 11 computer, administrators can limit allowed folder locations and whether This PC or Network appears.
Does reinstalling Windows fix a missing navigation pane?
Usually it is unnecessary because the pane is normally restored with the View setting. Reinstallation should be considered only for severe, broader Windows corruption after updates, restart, system-file checks, and supported recovery options have failed.
