You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, an internet connection, the same Nintendo Account that created the backup, and a game that supports Save Data Cloud.
Downloading is destructive: the cloud copy replaces the console’s current save for that game, and Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Check the cloud and console timestamps before confirming. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the important exception; it uses the game’s separate island-backup system rather than the ordinary Save Data Cloud menu.

What you need before restoring a save
Cloud restoration only works when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- Nintendo Switch Online: An active membership is required to access Save Data Cloud backups.
- The original Nintendo Account: Save data is associated with the Nintendo Account and user profile that created it. On the destination console, choose that same user rather than a different local profile.
- Internet access: The console must be online to view and download a backup.
- A compatible game: Save Data Cloud support is title-specific. Nintendo says most Switch 2 and Switch games support it, but not every game does.
- A usable cloud backup: The game must have uploaded a backup previously. A newly created save with no completed upload will not appear as a restorable file.
If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, Nintendo says cloud backups are unavailable during the lapse but access returns when you resubscribe within 180 days. The support guidance does not state the publication year for that 180-day rule, so treat it as a current Nintendo policy and verify it if your lapse is longer.

There is no general local-save-backup fallback. Nintendo’s Switch Online FAQ states: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” A microSD card can hold downloaded software and screenshots, but it is not a substitute for a Save Data Cloud backup.
Confirm that the game supports Save Data Cloud
Before troubleshooting a missing backup, verify compatibility in one of Nintendo’s supported locations:
- Open the game’s page in the Nintendo eShop and view Software Details.
- Check the game’s product page in the Nintendo Store.
- Highlight the game on the HOME Menu, open its Software Menu with the + or − button, and look for Save Data Cloud.
Unsupported software will identify itself as not supporting Save Data Cloud. If that message appears, the standard download procedure cannot recover the save. Look for a game-specific transfer, account-sync, or backup feature instead; do not assume that every Switch title uses Nintendo’s cloud system.

Open the game’s Save Data Cloud screen and compare the date and time of the cloud backup with the save currently stored on the console. This check determines which copy is safer to keep:
- If the console save is newer, choose Back Up Save Data to upload it. Downloading at this point would roll the game back to an older state.
- If the cloud save is newer, choose Download Save Data to restore that backup.
- If the timestamps are equal, there is no newer version to recover; downloading simply replaces the local file with an equivalent cloud copy.
Timestamp comparison is especially important after changing consoles. A replacement system may contain a newly started save, while the cloud copy still contains the progress from the original console.
Restore from the game’s Software Menu
This is the quickest method when the game is already visible on the HOME Menu.

- Connect the Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game whose save you want to restore.
- Press + or − to open the game’s Software Menu.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user profile that owns the Nintendo Account and backup.
- Review the cloud and console timestamps.
- Select Download Save Data, then confirm the warning.
The download applies to that game and selected user. It does not merge progress, combine files, or let you choose individual quests, characters, or save slots. The cloud file becomes the console file for that user.
Restore through System Settings
Use this route when you prefer a central list of cloud-enabled users and games, or when you cannot reach the game’s Software Menu.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the correct user.
- Select the game and backup file you want to use.
- Compare the displayed timestamps with the console copy.
- Select Download Save Data and confirm.
The same overwrite rule applies regardless of which entry point you use. System Settings does not create an additional safety copy before replacing the local save.
Understand the overwrite warning
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game. The overwritten data cannot be recovered.” In practical terms, downloading an older cloud file can erase progress made after the last successful upload, including progress made on the destination console.
Use this decision process before confirming:
- Stop the download if the console timestamp is later than the cloud timestamp.
- If the console copy contains progress you might need, upload it with Back Up Save Data first, provided the game supports that action.
- Only select Download Save Data when the cloud file is the version you intentionally want.
- After the download completes, launch the game and verify the expected profile, character, island, or campaign is present before continuing to play.
Do not expect Nintendo Support to reconstruct a file that you have overwritten. The warning means the previous console copy is not retained as a second restore point.

Enable automatic Save-Data Download
Manual downloading and automatic downloading are separate features. Automatic Save-Data Download must be enabled on each console where you want it to operate.

Nintendo also provides advanced per-software controls in this area, allowing automatic downloads to be adjusted for individual games and users. Automatic backup is a separate setting. Nintendo says automatic backup is enabled by default for compatible save files when Nintendo Switch Online begins, but it can be changed per game and user.
After enabling automatic download, put the console into Sleep Mode. When Nintendo detects that the cloud copy is newer than the local copy, it downloads the backup while the console sleeps. Keep the console in Sleep Mode until the transfer finishes; waking it immediately can interrupt the process. Automatic download does not force an older cloud file over a newer local file simply because the setting is enabled—the newer-copy check still matters.
Restore a save on Nintendo Switch 2 or another Switch
Nintendo says compatible Nintendo Switch software backups can be downloaded on either Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch when you use the same Nintendo Account. The procedure is the same: sign in with the account that owns the backup, select the correct user, verify compatibility, compare timestamps, and download.
There is one platform limitation. If a save includes Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive features or content, those features are not accessible when the save is used on Nintendo Switch. The underlying compatible save may still transfer, but the older console cannot provide hardware- or software-specific functions that it does not support.
For a lost, stolen, damaged, or unavailable console, obtain a working replacement system, connect it to the internet, add the original Nintendo Account, and use either restore path above. Cloud recovery depends on the account and backup, not on the original console’s microSD card.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses island backup instead
Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support the ordinary Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud function. Nintendo’s support wording says the game uses island backup, which must be enabled inside the game while you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a resident-linked Nintendo Account.

Enable island backup before a console problem
Island backup is useful only if it was turned on before the original console was lost, stolen, damaged, or sent for service. An active membership alone does not create an island backup retroactively.

If a new island already exists on the replacement console, Nintendo instructs you to delete that Animal Crossing save before trying the recovery again. Deletion is permanent for that new island; it cannot be recovered after removal. If the island search or restoration fails, follow Nintendo’s instruction to contact support.

The wrong user is selected
Save Data Cloud is organized by user. Return to the Save Data Cloud screen and select the profile linked to the Nintendo Account that played the game and created the backup. A different local profile can make a valid backup appear to be absent.
The membership is inactive
Check the Nintendo Switch Online membership status for the account. If it expired, restore access by resubscribing within Nintendo’s stated 180-day window where applicable, then reopen Save Data Cloud.
The game does not support cloud backup
Check the eShop Software Details, Nintendo Store listing, or Software Menu. If the title is marked unsupported, the ordinary cloud workflow cannot be used. For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, switch to island-backup instructions instead.
The backup was never uploaded
A console can contain a save without a corresponding cloud copy. Open the game’s Save Data Cloud screen and inspect the latest cloud timestamp. If no backup is listed, review the automatic-backup setting and, when available, perform a manual Back Up Save Data from the console that still has the desired progress.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
The internet connection or Sleep Mode transfer failed
Reconnect the console to a stable internet connection, reopen Save Data Cloud, and check whether the timestamp changed. For automatic downloads, enable the setting for the relevant user and game, then leave the console in Sleep Mode long enough for the transfer to complete.
The console copy is newer
A newer local timestamp is not evidence that the cloud backup is broken. It means the local file has more recent progress. Choose Back Up Save Data rather than downloading unless you deliberately want to discard that progress.
Manual versus automatic restoration
| Method | Entry point or trigger | When it is useful | Overwrite consideration | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual download from Software Menu | Game on HOME Menu > +/− > Save Data Cloud | Immediate recovery of one selected game | Replaces that game’s current console save; overwritten data cannot be recovered | Same Nintendo Account, active Nintendo Switch Online membership, internet, and a supported title |
| Manual download from System Settings | System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud | Centralized access by user and game | Same irreversible replacement rule as the Software Menu route | Same Nintendo Account, active membership, internet, and a supported title |
| Automatic Save-Data Download | Per-console setting; transfer occurs in Sleep Mode when the cloud copy is newer | Keeping a replacement or second console synchronized without starting a manual download | The newer-copy check applies, but verify the resulting timestamp before playing | Automatic download enabled for the console, user, and relevant software, plus internet and a supported title |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons island restoration | Hold − after the Nintendo logo fades, then choose Begin | Recovering an island after a lost, stolen, damaged, or serviced console | Any new island on the replacement console must be deleted first, and that new island cannot be recovered afterward | Island backup enabled beforehand, active membership, the resident-linked Nintendo Account, internet, and a replacement console |
Limits you should know before relying on cloud saves
- No file-level merging: Nintendo downloads the selected backup as the game’s save; it does not merge newer local achievements with older cloud progress.
- No universal coverage: Save Data Cloud is not guaranteed for every game, so check each title separately.
- No local recovery archive: Nintendo does not currently support general local save-data backups on Switch or Switch 2.
- Platform-specific content may not travel backward: Switch 2-exclusive save features or content are not accessible when the save is used on Nintendo Switch.
- Account selection matters: A backup belongs to the user and Nintendo Account that created it; changing profiles does not expose another user’s save.
A safe recovery sequence
When you are unsure which copy is current, use this order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the destination console to the internet.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account that originally played the game.
- Verify that Nintendo Switch Online is active.
- Confirm that the game supports Save Data Cloud, or identify its special backup system.
- Open Save Data Cloud and record both timestamps.
- Back up the console copy if it is newer and worth preserving.
- Download only when the cloud copy is the intended version.
- Launch the game and verify the restored content before making new progress.
This sequence works for ordinary compatible games on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, skip the ordinary Save Data Cloud menus and use island backup recovery.
When to contact Nintendo Support
Contact Nintendo Support after confirming the correct account, membership, internet connection, title compatibility, and latest cloud timestamp. Support is also the appropriate next step when an enabled Animal Crossing: New Horizons island backup cannot be found or restored. Do not delete a replacement-console island or download over a known-good local save until you have decided which data must be preserved.
Nintendo’s menu labels and policies can change, particularly across Switch system updates and Switch 2 software revisions. If a label differs from the paths above, use the current Save Data Cloud instructions shown on the console and Nintendo’s current support pages.
