If an update makes Warcraft III look like Classic, hides your maps, or rejects an old save, work from a copy of the game’s user-data folder. Recheck the Reforged graphics choice, restore maps to the correct Windows or macOS Maps directory, and treat a save error that mentions a different map file as a version mismatch—not as proof that the save is gone.
The safest order is: close the game, copy the entire Warcraft III user-data folder, verify graphics, restore maps, restart the client, and then diagnose saves. A campaign save affected by patch 3.0.1 may require Blizzard’s temporary older-map and local-file procedure; that workaround is campaign-specific and should not be applied to unrelated maps.

Start with an untouched backup
Exit Warcraft III and the Battle.net client before changing anything. Copy the complete Warcraft III user-data folder to a dated folder on another drive. Include the Saves data and the entire Maps directory, along with any subfolders created by custom campaigns. A USB flash drive is sufficient if you do not have a second internal or external drive.

Keep this copy unchanged. Do not test a suspected fix by moving, renaming, or deleting the only save. If a later step replaces a map, enables a local-file override, or changes a folder location, you can return to this copy instead of trying to reconstruct the original state.

Choose the recovery path from the symptom

These paths overlap only when an update changed both settings and files. Fix the reversible, general items first—graphics selection and map placement—before attempting a campaign-specific recovery.
Restore the Reforged graphics presentation
Confirm the active graphics choice
- Launch Warcraft III and open the current graphics or options screen.
- Find the choice that controls the Reforged, remastered, or Classic presentation. Select the Reforged/remastered option rather than Classic.
- Apply the change and leave the menu normally so the client can save the setting.
- Load one campaign mission and one custom map. Check terrain, unit models, buildings, effects, and textures in both tests.
Menu wording can differ between client builds and platforms. If your build does not use the exact words “Reforged” or “Classic,” record the label you actually see instead of following an assumed click path. The important distinction is the presentation mode, not a particular menu position.
Why an update can make graphics appear wrong
Reinstalling the game is not a reliable way to restore the visual mode because the setting and user data can survive an installation change. Blizzard’s patch history documents a 1.35.0 fix for models and textures failing to load correctly when switching between custom maps. It also documents a 1.32.2 crash fix associated with the Low texture setting. Those notes do not mean every visual problem has the same cause, but they are useful clues after an update: check the selected presentation and texture setting before removing files.

If the setting does not hold
- Close the game completely and launch it again before changing several options at once.
- Check the graphics screen after the restart to see whether the presentation reverted.
- Test a built-in campaign mission before judging a custom map, because a custom map can have its own missing or incompatible assets.
- Use the dated user-data copy if an experiment changes behavior in the wrong direction. Do not delete saves to solve a graphics-only problem.
Put custom maps in the correct user folder
Windows location
On Windows, the default user map directory is:
C:Users<YourUserName>DocumentsWarcraft IIIMaps
macOS location
On macOS, the documented default is:
~/Library/Application Support/Blizzard/Warcraft III/Maps/
The tilde represents your macOS home folder. In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder… and enter the path if the Library folder is hidden.
Restore files without flattening the campaign
- Open the backed-up
Mapsfolder and identify the map files and folders supplied by the map author. - Copy the
.w3xand.w3mfiles into the platform’s userMapsdirectory. Copy required subfolders as well; do not move every file into one flat directory if the author used nested folders. - Keep filenames and capitalization unchanged. A campaign that expects a particular path can fail when a file is renamed or moved.
- Start Warcraft III after the copy is complete. Open Custom Games or the map-selection screen and look for the restored map.
- Open one map to verify that it loads. Exit normally before testing an old save that depends on it.
A map appearing in the list proves only that the client can discover that file. It does not prove that an old save references the same version. If the map is visible but the save still fails, move to the version-mismatch diagnosis rather than copying the folder repeatedly.

Understand the save error before replacing anything
What the message means
Warcraft III patch 1.32.2 documents the error: “The map file referenced by the saved game is different from the map file on your hard drive”. A saved game contains a reference to the map version used when it was created. If an update replaces a campaign or custom map, or if a newer file with the same apparent name is copied into the folder, the file on disk may no longer match that reference.

This is a compatibility check, not a statement that the save file has been erased. The save can remain in the user-data folder while refusing to load because the map identity or contents differ.
Safe diagnosis
- Note the exact save name, campaign, act, and map involved. Do not overwrite it with a new save using the same name.
- Check whether the update changed the relevant campaign or custom-map files. Compare the current folder with the untouched copy you made before troubleshooting.
- Restore only the map version that the save originally used, if you have a known-good copy. Keep the current files in a separate dated folder rather than deleting them.
- Launch the game and try the save once. If the same mismatch appears, stop swapping files at random; the save may require an older map that is not in your local backup.
For custom campaigns, Blizzard’s 1.35.0 notes say the Load saved game menu can now reload custom campaign save files. That improves the supported loading path for custom-campaign saves, but it does not make every old save compatible with every later map or patch. A save created against a changed map can still fail the version check.

Separate missing maps from mismatched maps
- Missing-map symptom: the map is not listed at all. Recheck the platform path, file extension, and subfolder structure.
- Version-mismatch symptom: the map is listed or launches, but the save reports that the referenced map differs from the hard-drive file. Find the exact older map version instead of changing graphics settings.
- Corrupt or incomplete copy: the map appears but crashes or fails to start. Recopy it from a verified backup and preserve any companion folders supplied with it.
Use the 3.0.1 campaign workaround only when it matches
A Blizzard-hosted technical-support thread describes a temporary recovery flow for certain campaign saves broken by patch 3.0.1. It is not a general rollback tool for Warcraft III, and it is not a fix for an arbitrary custom map. Match the campaign and the reported symptom to that support procedure before proceeding.
What the procedure does
The support flow temporarily supplies older campaign map files from Blizzard’s CDN, enables a local-file override so Warcraft III uses those files, lets you continue the existing act, and then runs a removal or restore step to return the normal current configuration. The purpose is to let a save load against the map version it expects long enough to finish the affected act.
Preparation
- Use the untouched save backup created before troubleshooting.
- Close Warcraft III before applying the supplied files or changing the override.
- Read the support thread’s campaign and version conditions in full. Do not infer that a similarly named map qualifies.
- Keep the current map files in a separate location so the restoration step can put the normal configuration back.
Recovery sequence
- Obtain the older campaign map package through the Blizzard-hosted procedure for the affected 3.0.1 save.
- Follow that procedure’s instructions to enable the local-file override. The override is temporary; do not leave it enabled as a permanent replacement for the current installation.
- Launch Warcraft III and use the existing save to continue the specified act.
- Finish the act as instructed. Avoid creating a new branch of saves that depends on the temporary files unless the support procedure explicitly requires it.
- Exit the game and run the procedure’s removal or restore step. Confirm that the normal current map configuration is back before playing other campaigns or custom maps.
- Start Warcraft III normally and test the recovered progression. Keep the original save backup even if the load now works.
The support thread states that its scripts do not modify, delete, move, or overwrite save files. That describes the supplied scripts, not every manual file operation a player might perform, so follow the procedure exactly and do not improvise by deleting user data.

Troubleshoot by result
The game still displays Classic graphics
Return to the graphics/options screen and confirm the presentation mode after a full restart. If it keeps reverting, write down the labels and settings shown in your build, then test with one built-in mission. The 1.35.0 model-and-texture fix concerns switching between custom maps, while the 1.32.2 Low texture crash fix concerns a separate setting; neither note establishes that reinstalling or deleting saves will correct a persistent selection problem.
The map folder exists but the game shows no maps
Confirm that the files end in .w3x or .w3m, that they are under the documented user Maps path for your operating system, and that you restarted Warcraft III after copying them. If the author supplied folders, preserve them. A map stored in a different download, installation, or backup directory will not appear in the user map list.
The map appears, but one save fails
Stop treating this as a folder-discovery problem. The documented mismatch message means the save’s map reference and the map on disk differ. Use the untouched copy to identify the earlier file, or seek the campaign-specific support procedure if the save is the affected 3.0.1 case.

Record which map and act produced each save. A successful load does not establish that every map in the campaign uses the same version. Keep separate save names while testing, and do not replace the original file with a test result until the complete act or campaign progression is confirmed.
Prepare for the next update
- Copy the full Warcraft III user-data folder before installing a major client update.
- Keep dated backups long enough to finish any campaign that depends on older map files.
- Store custom maps with their original subfolders, not only the individual map files.
- After an update, check the graphics presentation before assuming visual changes are a rendering failure.
- Open one campaign mission and one custom map before loading valuable saves.
- Keep current and older map versions in separate folders so a save mismatch can be diagnosed without destroying the newer installation.
- When a support workaround uses a local-file override, remove it as directed before normal play.
Patch behavior, menu labels, file paths, and platform support can change in later Warcraft III builds. Recheck the current client’s instructions whenever Blizzard ships another update, especially before applying an older-map workaround.
