In the original NES version of Final Fantasy, take a character who fell in battle to a town Clinic and pay to have them revived. They return with 1 HP, so visit an Inn before setting out again. Other releases may use different revival methods, so check which version you’re playing.
Reviving a character in the original NES version
- Go to a town Clinic. The Nintendo-hosted Final Fantasy instruction manual says a character lost in battle can be revived there for a fee.
- Pay the Clinic to revive the character. The manual does not give a fee amount in its instructions.
- Visit an Inn before continuing. A revived character has 1 HP, according to the manual, so they are still at risk if you head straight back into danger.
Do revival methods differ in other versions?
Yes. Square Enix’s Japanese support FAQ lists revival at a church, White Magic Raise or Esuna at level 6 or higher, and Phoenix Down. The available FAQ does not clearly identify which edition or regional release those instructions cover, so treat them as version-specific guidance rather than rules that apply to every version of Final Fantasy.
What about Final Fantasy I Pixel Remaster?
Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster information page describes the remasters as based on the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo versions, with balance tweaks and adjustments. Its official FAQ does not specify Final Fantasy I’s revival mechanics. That means the NES Clinic instructions alone do not confirm how every Pixel Remaster version handles revival.

How to choose which instructions to follow
