To hear an MSX cartridge through modern speakers, connect the MSX’s analog audio output to powered speakers, an amplifier, headphones, or a computer audio interface. SCC and similar cartridges create analog sound and return it through cartridge-slot pin 49 (SOUNDIN); the MSX then mixes that signal with its internal PSG and other audio before sending the result to its output. Because not every MSX connects SOUNDIN, the same cartridge can be loud on one model and silent on another.

For original hardware, use the machine’s DIN-6, RCA, SCART, or 3.5 mm audio output rather than trying to tap a digital signal from the cartridge slot. For recording, feed that output into a computer line input or USB audio interface. If you use openMSX, its built-in audio capture can write a WAV file without any physical cable.

What audio does an MSX cartridge actually provide?

Most MSX cartridges do not send a computer-ready digital stream over the cartridge connector. An SCC, SCC-I, or another sound cartridge generates an analog signal on the cartridge board. That signal is placed on slot pin 49, labeled SOUNDIN, where a compatible MSX mixes it with the console’s PSG and any other internal sound sources.

The mixing circuit is part of the computer, not a universal cartridge standard. Resistor values, routing, and whether pin 49 is wired into the mixer differ by model. The SCC technical reference describes the result simply: the computer mixes the cartridge signal with its own sound. Consequently, a cartridge can work perfectly yet be inaudible on a machine whose SOUNDIN line is not connected.

Some cartridges have their own audio jack instead of, or in addition to, slot mixing. In that case the cartridge’s analog output must be connected directly, and it may need to be combined with the MSX’s normal output if you want PSG or MSX-MUSIC at the same time.

Which routing method fits your setup?

Choose the path by deciding whether you want to listen, record, or balance several independent sound chips. The table separates the signal source, destination, and hardware you need.

Goal Source Connection What you hear or record Main caveat
Play through speakers or headphones Original MSX audio output DIN-6, RCA, SCART, or 3.5 mm to powered speakers, amplifier, monitor, or headphone amplifier The MSX’s mixed mono or stereo output, including cartridge audio when SOUNDIN is supported Connector wiring and cartridge level vary by model
Record original hardware on a computer MSX line/headphone output Computer line-in or USB audio interface with line input An analog recording of the MSX mix Set conservative gain and avoid clipping; there is no universal level setting
Capture emulated sound openMSX audio engine Tools → Capture → Audio/Video, or the console command soundlog start A WAV file generated by the emulator This records emulation, not the electrical output of a physical MSX
Hear a cartridge with its own audio connector Cartridge output plus MSX output Direct cable, or an external mixer combining both outputs Cartridge chip(s) and internal PSG/MSX-MUSIC together Some cartridges do not feed their sound back through the MSX
Balance several modern cartridge sources Cartridge mixer or sound-enhancer outputs EAR, RCA Audio Out, or a dedicated mixer output Individually adjusted PSG, OPLL, SCC, DAC, OPL2, OPL3, or OPL4 sources when supported Features depend on the specific hardware and firmware

How do I connect an original MSX to speakers or headphones?

Use the MSX’s analog output and let the receiving equipment handle amplification. The exact cable depends on the machine, but the signal path is straightforward.

1. Identify the machine’s audio connector

Many MSX computers expose audio on a DIN-6 connector. The documented pin mapping places left or mono audio on pin 4, right audio on pin 6, and ground on pin 3. Some machines provide RCA or SCART instead; newer MSX hardware can include a 3.5 mm jack that functions as headphone or line output.

Do not infer stereo from the number of pins or plugs. MSX output is often mono even when two RCA channels are available. A two-channel cable can simply carry the same mono signal to left and right inputs.

2. Choose a correctly wired cable

Use a DIN-to-RCA or DIN-to-3.5 mm lead made for your exact MSX model, or verify every pin with the machine’s service documentation before making one. Connect audio and ground only; do not apply voltage to an audio pin. If the destination has separate left and right inputs and the MSX is mono, use a mono-to-stereo adapter or split the same signal to both inputs.

3. Connect to an appropriate destination

Powered speakers, an amplifier, a monitor or television with an audio input, and a headphone amplifier are suitable endpoints. Passive headphones should not be connected to an output that cannot drive them; use an amplifier when the MSX provides line-level audio only.

4. Start at low volume

Switch the speaker or amplifier to a low level, start the MSX, and then raise the MSX or receiver volume gradually. If the sound is clean but quiet, increase gain at the receiving device rather than modifying the cartridge. If it distorts, reduce the MSX level and the receiver gain before changing cables.

How do I route MSX audio into a computer for monitoring or recording?

Feed the MSX’s analog output into a line input. A USB audio interface or USB sound card with a stereo line input is the practical solution when a desktop or laptop has no dedicated line-in.

  1. Power down before cabling. Turn off the MSX and the external interface, then connect the model-correct DIN, RCA, SCART, or 3.5 mm cable to the MSX output.
  2. Connect the computer side. Plug the cable into the computer’s line input, or into the left and right line inputs of a USB audio interface. Avoid a microphone-only input unless it offers a selectable line setting; microphone inputs can add excessive gain.
  3. Select the input in the operating system. In the sound settings, choose the line input or USB interface as the recording device. Select the same device in your recording application.
  4. Set the initial gain low. Start the MSX and play the loudest passage you expect to capture. Raise interface gain until the meter shows a healthy signal with clear headroom; never let it remain at the clipping indicator.
  5. Monitor safely. Use headphones connected to the interface or powered speakers connected to its output. If you hear hum, test the setup with the computer running from battery, move audio cables away from power supplies, and avoid connecting multiple grounded devices through an unverified adapter.
  6. Record a short test. Capture several seconds containing both quiet and loud notes. Play it back to check that SCC, PSG, and any other sources are present and that neither channel is overloaded.
  7. Record the full performance. Keep the same cable and gain settings, and save the project with the interface and sample-rate information so it can be reproduced later.

The MSX documentation identifies connectors and routing but does not publish one level setting that applies to every model. Treat the meters on your interface or software as the authority for clipping and adjust conservatively.

How can I capture MSX sound with openMSX?

openMSX can record the emulator’s generated audio directly, so no physical MSX, cable, or audio interface is required. This is useful for clean soundtrack captures, but it is not a measurement of an original machine’s analog mix.

  1. Launch openMSX and load the desired machine configuration and cartridge.
  2. Open Tools → Capture → Audio/Video.
  3. Enable the Audio option and choose the destination and recording settings offered by your version.
  4. Start playback, then begin capture.
  5. Stop the capture when the passage ends and verify that the resulting audio file plays correctly.

The same function is available from the openMSX console. Enter soundlog start to begin a WAV recording and soundlog stop to finish it. Emulator mixer settings can produce a different balance from a particular physical MSX, especially when that computer uses a different SOUNDIN resistor network.

Why is SCC audio missing, distorted, or much quieter than PSG?

Most problems come from one of four places: the cartridge is not an audio cartridge, the machine does not pass SOUNDIN, the cartridge has a separate output, or the mixer levels are unbalanced.

Check that the cartridge really generates audio

Confirm that the software and cartridge use SCC, SCC-I, or another supported sound device. A normal ROM cartridge cannot produce SCC music merely because the game contains music data. If the cartridge documentation specifies a separate audio jack, connect that jack directly; its sound may not be returned through the slot.

Verify SOUNDIN compatibility

The MSX slot reference lists machines in which slot pin 49 is not connected, including Casio PV-7, Hitachi MB-H1, Victor HC-30, Yamaha SX-100, and Korean MSX machines. Other computers have the pin physically present but still fail to pass SCC audio through their mixer. On those systems, an external cartridge output or a model-specific modification may be necessary.

Inspect and clean the cartridge connection

Power the MSX off before inserting or removing any cartridge. Clean dirty edge contacts with an appropriate electronics-cleaning method, allow them to dry, and reseat the cartridge firmly. Intermittent slot contacts can remove one channel or produce crackle that resembles a mixer fault.

Compare cartridge and internal levels

The SCC reference notes that loudness depends on the computer’s mixing circuit. Two MSX models can therefore produce different SCC-to-PSG balance with the same cartridge. If SCC is audible but far quieter than PSG, use the machine’s cartridge-volume control if it has one, adjust a documented mixer, or combine outputs in an external mixer.

Avoid blind component changes

Do not add a resistor, capacitor, or wire link without the exact model schematic. Mixing circuits differ, and an alteration that raises SCC on one board can overload another or damage an output stage. First prove the cartridge and cable on a known-compatible setup.

How do cartridges with their own audio outputs behave?

A cartridge with an independent audio connector bypasses the assumption that the MSX will mix everything internally. Connect the cartridge output to speakers, a line input, or an external mixer. To hear the MSX’s PSG or MSX-MUSIC as well, connect the computer’s audio output to another mixer input and set both levels separately.

PlaySoniq documentation gives this arrangement explicitly: the sound it creates is sent to the MSX and to the PlaySoniq audio connector, while MSX PSG and MSX-MUSIC are not sent into PlaySoniq. The practical consequence is that one cable may give you only the expansion’s sound. Mixing the PlaySoniq output with the MSX output restores the complete arrangement.

The same principle applies to any cartridge whose manual says its audio is available only on a dedicated connector. Never assume that a silent SOUNDIN path means the cartridge is defective until you have tested that connector.

What do MSX Virtualizer and MSX Sound Enhancer add?

Modern hardware can expose more control than a vintage MSX motherboard. MSX Virtualizer documentation lists cartridges with additional PSG, DAC, SCC, OPLL, OPL2, OPL3, and OPL4 sources. It directs users to the EAR audio output or RCA Audio Out and provides cartridge-volume control. Those outputs are intended to carry the cartridge sound to an amplifier, speakers, or a recording interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MSX Sound Enhancer reference describes independent volume sliders for PSG, OPLL, and external cartridge sources. It also offers an optional external power supply intended to reduce noise. These systems are useful when your goal is a balanced multi-chip mix rather than a single cable from a conventional MSX, but their controls and available sources depend on the particular hardware.

Which connector should I use?

MSX-side connection Typical destination Important detail
DIN-6 RCA pair, 3.5 mm input, amplifier, or interface Documented mapping: pin 4 is left/mono audio, pin 6 is right audio, pin 3 is ground
RCA Powered speakers, amplifier, capture interface Some machines provide mono on one or both connectors; verify the manual
SCART Television, monitor, SCART breakout, or capture device Use an adapter that preserves the audio pins and ground; video wiring alone is not enough
3.5 mm jack Headphones, powered speakers, line input, or USB interface Modern hardware may label this as headphone or line output; follow its level guidance
Cartridge audio jack Direct amplifier, interface, or external mixer Required when the cartridge does not return sound through SOUNDIN

How should I choose between original hardware and emulation?

Use original hardware when you need the electrical behavior of a particular MSX, including its SOUNDIN wiring, analog noise, and PSG-to-SCC balance. Use openMSX when repeatable digital capture is more important than reproducing one machine’s analog circuit.

  • Choose original hardware for authenticity: connect its output to speakers or an interface and document the exact MSX model, cartridge, cable, and mixer settings.
  • Choose openMSX for convenience: capture with the Audio/Video dialog or soundlog, then edit the resulting WAV without analog hum or level drift.
  • Choose an external mixer for expansion cartridges: combine a dedicated cartridge output with the MSX output when the cartridge does not feed PSG or MSX-MUSIC back into the computer.
  • Choose a modern cartridge mixer for multi-chip systems: use its individual source controls when you need repeatable balance between SCC, OPLL, DAC, or other supported engines.

What safety and maintenance practices prevent damage?

Always switch the MSX off before inserting or removing a cartridge. Inspect cables for shorts, keep ground connections correct, and begin every session with low amplifier and interface gain. Do not connect two powered outputs directly together; use a proper mixer or line-level combining circuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Label each cable with the MSX model and connector pinout. If a setup suddenly becomes silent, test one component at a time: MSX output with a known-good source, cable continuity, interface input, then the cartridge. This isolates a wiring problem without exposing the cartridge or computer to repeated hot-plugging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a normal headphone splitter to make MSX mono sound stereo?

Yes, when the splitter simply duplicates one mono signal to both left and right inputs. It does not create stereo information; it only prevents one side of a stereo speaker or recorder from being silent.

Why does my recording contain only the cartridge or only the MSX music?

The cartridge may have a dedicated output that is separate from the computer’s PSG/MSX-MUSIC output. Route both outputs into separate mixer inputs, set their levels independently, and send the mixer output to the recorder.

Is a microphone input safe for an MSX line output?

It can overload easily because microphone inputs usually provide much more gain than line inputs. Prefer a line input or USB interface; if a microphone input is your only option, disable its boost or phantom power and keep the input gain very low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will every MSX with a cartridge slot play SCC audio?

No. The slot can accept a cartridge while the computer’s motherboard leaves SOUNDIN disconnected or does not mix it correctly. Model-specific documentation and a known-good SCC test are more reliable than the presence of the slot alone.

Does openMSX reproduce the exact volume of my physical MSX?

Not necessarily. Emulator mixer values and analog behavior are different from the resistor networks used in individual computers. Treat an openMSX WAV as an emulated rendering, not as a calibrated recording of a particular motherboard.
