Fallout 2 can run on an iPad Pro through Fallout 2 Community Edition, a community-built reimplementation with an iOS app. It is not an official, one-tap iPad release: the documented route involves sideloading the app and copying game files from a copy of Fallout 2 you own. Touch controls are available, though the game’s mouse-focused interface can make precise actions awkward.
What the iPad Pro demonstration used
A July 2024 post in r/iPadPro showed Fallout 2 running on an iPad Pro; commenters pointed to the Fallout 2 Community Edition project as the likely method. The project describes its software as a reimplementation intended to preserve the original gameplay while adding engine fixes and quality-of-life improvements. Its repository includes iOS instructions.

The post is evidence of a user demonstration, not a tested compatibility guide. The repository does not publish a current matrix covering iPad Pro generations and iPadOS versions, so the demonstration should not be taken as confirmation that every iPad Pro or iPadOS release works.
What you need before installing
- An iPad and a way to sideload an iOS app. The project names AltStore and Sideloadly as examples; it also describes building from source with your own signing certificate.
- A copy of Fallout 2 that you own. The project points to GOG, Epic Games, and Steam as places to purchase the game. Community Edition does not provide the game itself.
- Access to the game’s data files:
master.dat,critter.dat,patch000.dat, and thedatafolder.
The repository’s documented route does not require jailbreaking: it describes sideloading. That is not a guarantee about the signing requirements, tool availability, or exact procedure on every current device.

Install the iOS build and copy the game data
- Download
fallout2-ce.ipafrom the project’s GitHub repository and install it with a sideloading tool such as AltStore or Sideloadly. Alternatively, follow the project’s instructions to build it from source using your own signing certificate. - Open the app once. The project says this creates the app’s file-sharing area.
- Connect the iPad to a computer and copy
master.dat,critter.dat,patch000.dat, and thedatafolder into the app through Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or through iTunes on Windows or macOS Mojave or earlier. - Check the filenames if the game does not find its files. The README warns that they may need to be lowercase to match the configuration.
These are the project’s documented steps, not an independently verified guide to the latest versions of sideloading tools or every device configuration. Consult the repository for its current instructions before proceeding.
Touch controls and the mouse-focused interface

- Move one finger to move the cursor.
- Tap with one finger for a left click.
- Tap with two fingers for a right click or to switch cursor mode.
- Move two fingers to scroll.
Those gestures make play possible without extra hardware, but they do not remove the precision challenge. An iPad mouse is an optional aid if cursor placement is frustrating; the project does not list one as a requirement.
Set the display resolution for a tablet
The README advises setting the game’s resolution values to the tablet’s logical resolution. Its iPad Pro 11-inch example is 834 × 1194 points, corresponding to 1668 × 2388 pixels. These are example values for that documented model, not a universal setting for every iPad Pro. The project says resolution configuration currently requires manual editing.

Community Edition versus UTM SE
Fallout 2 Community Edition and UTM SE are different approaches, not interchangeable versions of the same app. Community Edition is the project’s own iOS implementation of Fallout 2; UTM SE is an interpreter-based way to run older operating systems, including DOS, with limitations described in UTM’s iOS installation documentation.
The iPad Pro discussion identified Community Edition as the likely method used in the demonstration. The available sources do not establish a comprehensive performance comparison between it and UTM SE, nor do they document UTM SE as the method used in that post.
