The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is best suited to players who want a larger, high-refresh screen and a capable Windows handheld, and who are comfortable carrying and holding a 795g device. Its 8-inch display and 80Wh battery are appealing on paper, but the battery capacity does not translate into all-day gaming: a Windows Central comparison reported roughly two hours in demanding games. At its $899.99 US launch-era price, it was a costly proposition; that figure is historical, not a current quote.
What the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM offers
This is the A2VM model, not the later Claw 8 EX AI+ or another Claw configuration. MSI lists an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, Intel Arc 140V integrated graphics, 32GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD in the cited regional specification. The Malaysia specification sheet is dated August 14, 2025, so check the exact SKU and regional listing before assuming every market has the same configuration.

The 1920×1200 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate give the Claw a larger, sharper-looking play area than a compact handheld screen, while the touchscreen is useful for Windows navigation. MSI’s December 2024 launch announcement also specifies 500-nit typical brightness and 100% sRGB typical coverage. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of every unit.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance Computing: Harness the power of the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor to effortlessly handle demanding tasks. Enjoy reliable, high-performance computing wherever you go.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Perfection Through Anthropometry: As a handheld device, Claw has achieved the optimal balance between its grip and weight. We have meticulously polished various design details, from the curvature that fits the palm, to the finger grip positions and trigger force.
- Best-in-Class Battery Life: Unlock exceptional gaming endurance with our breakthrough battery capacity. It's where efficient power meets robust performance—more game, less charge.
- 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.
The larger screen has a trade-off: at 795g, this is a substantial device to hold for long sessions or carry around. Comfort depends on hand size, grip, posture and how long you play, so the “plush and premium” impression is a matter of fit rather than a universal verdict. The Hall Effect sticks and triggers are part of the hardware; whether their shape and placement suit you is best assessed in person if possible.
MSI describes the design as ergonomic and says the controls were redesigned. Treat that as the manufacturer’s positioning, not proof that every player will find the grip comfortable. MSI’s launch announcement also claimed support for more than 150 AAA titles, but a game’s availability does not guarantee ideal performance or controls in every title.
What review testing says about performance
Windows Central’s review tested a 32GB/1TB unit and reported a 3DMark Time Spy score of 3,882, a Night Raid score of 28,499, SSD read and write results of 6,068 and 5,324 MB/s, and a CrossMark score of 1,665. These are results from that publication’s unit and test setup, not performance guarantees across games, firmware, drivers or power profiles. Windows Central noted that the Night Raid result was below the cited processor average, while the Time Spy result exceeded the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go scores it compared.

- Processor: Intel Core Ultra 7-258V 8 Cores (2.2GHz-4.8GHz, 12MB Intel Smart Cache)
- Graphics Card: Intel Arc Graphics 140V
- RAM: 32GB (Onboard) LPDDR5x-8533MHz | Hard Drive: 1TB NVMe SSD Gen4x4 2230
- OS: Microsoft Windows 11 Home | Warranty: 1-Year MSI USA Warranty Parts & Labor (include 1 Year Global Warranty) + Lifetime Tech Support from EXCaliberPC
In a separate 2025 comparison, Windows Central reported an average of 59 FPS for the Claw 8 AI+ in Cyberpunk 2077 using Steam Deck graphics defaults; the same publication reported 36 FPS for the Legion Go and 29 FPS for the ROG Ally X under its comparison conditions. These numbers are useful as one reviewer’s controlled comparison, not as a prediction for every game or settings combination.
MSI separately claimed that at 17W the Claw delivered an average 20% higher FPS and 113% higher peak FPS than competitors under identical power conditions. That is a vendor comparison; without the full methodology and competitor configurations, it should not be treated as independent proof that the Claw is faster overall.
Battery life: capacity is not play time
The 80Wh battery is a capacity rating, not a promise of a particular runtime. Windows Central’s 2025 comparison warns that demanding games typically drained the device in roughly two hours in its testing. Actual time away from a charger varies with the game, screen brightness, performance mode, wireless use and other settings; lighter workloads can behave differently.

- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V – AI-Powered Efficiency: Next-gen Series 2 processor delivers 50% better GPU performance and 40% higher efficiency. 47 NPU TOPS accelerate local AI tasks – from Copilot+ to real-time game optimization.
- 8" 120Hz VRR Touch Display: FHD+ IPS screen with 500 nits sunlight readability. 16:10 golden ratio and VRR support eliminate tearing. Perfect for AAA gaming, streaming, or productivity on the go.
- 80Whr Battery + Fast Charge: Massive 80Whr capacity beats most handhelds. Fast charge gets you back in action quickly. Game longer, worry less – whether on a flight or a long commute.
- Revolutionary Intraflow Cooling: Redesigned airflow keeps internal components cool, preventing thermal throttling. Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers offer drift-free, microscopic precision – built to last.
- Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
For travel, the practical question is not just whether the battery is large, but whether the runtime you get in your games matches the length of the sessions you expect. If long stretches away from power are a priority, plan around demanding-game use rather than assuming the capacity figure means all-day play.

Claw 8 AI+ A2VM versus the Lenovo Legion Go and ROG Ally X
The available comparison figures show a performance result for one named game, while the Claw’s 8-inch display and 795g weight frame a different size-and-portability trade-off. The sources do not establish directly comparable prices, weights, battery runtimes or software-customization counts for all three devices, so those comparisons should be checked against the specific models and current listings you are considering.

Windows Central also identifies fewer customization options in MSI Center M as a drawback. That matters if you want extensive control over handheld-specific settings; the available evidence does not quantify the difference against each rival, so treat it as a review observation rather than a feature-count comparison.
Should you buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+?
It makes sense if
- You want an 8-inch, 120Hz Windows handheld and value screen size over having the lightest device.
- You want the cited A2VM configuration’s 32GB memory, 1TB storage and dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, and have verified those details for your regional SKU.
- You are comfortable checking game settings and accepting that demanding titles can use battery quickly.
Consider another handheld if
- You prioritize a lighter device for long handheld sessions or frequent travel; 795g may be tiring depending on your grip and play style.
- You need long demanding-game sessions away from power, given Windows Central’s roughly two-hour report.
- You want more customization in the handheld software, since Windows Central flags MSI Center M’s options as comparatively limited.
- You are choosing based on price: $899.99 is a historical US launch-era figure, and current retailer prices and availability were not established here.
At the time of its review, Windows Central listed the 32GB/1TB Claw 8 AI+ at $899.99 in the US. That is useful launch-era context, not a claim about what it costs now. Verify the listing, exact A2VM SKU and regional configuration with a retailer before buying.
