To run the Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter, open Windows Get Help on the Windows device where classic Outlook is installed and launch the Classic Outlook troubleshooter. It checks for known problems and configuration details, then connects findings to possible fixes. It does not work in new Outlook for Windows. Microsoft says Outlook Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) diagnostics have been migrated to Get Help, so older SaRA instructions describe the workflow’s history and earlier scan results—not the current entry point.
What is the Outlook Advanced Diagnostics troubleshooter?
It is a diagnostic workflow for classic Outlook on Windows. The tool examines Outlook for known issues and gathers configuration details; its findings can help you identify which troubleshooting step fits the problem. It is not itself a repair for every Outlook fault, and a diagnostic result should guide a targeted fix rather than prompt unrelated changes.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Microsoft describes the migration this way: “Outlook Support and Recovery Assistant diagnostics have been migrated to Windows Get Help.” The familiar SaRA name still appears in older guides because SaRA was the earlier way to run Outlook diagnostics. For the current workflow, start in Get Help instead.
The scope matters: this troubleshooter is for classic Outlook, not new Outlook for Windows. Microsoft’s stated limitation is direct: “The troubleshooter doesn’t work in new Outlook for Windows.” If you are unsure which app you have, confirm the Outlook edition before following classic-Outlook steps; settings and repair options may differ.

How do I run the Classic Outlook troubleshooter?
Use Get Help on the same Windows device where classic Outlook is installed. The exact entry point is the Classic Outlook troubleshooter in Windows Get Help; do not assume an old SaRA download or a SaRA-specific set of instructions is the current route.
- Confirm the app and symptom. Make sure the affected app is classic Outlook for Windows. Note whether the issue is freezing or startup, sending or receiving, sign-in, an add-in, connectivity, a profile, or a data-file error.
- Open Windows Get Help. On the Windows device with classic Outlook, start Get Help and launch the Classic Outlook troubleshooter. If Get Help is blocked by your organization, contact your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass a restriction.
- Run the diagnostic and review its findings. Read the reported issues and configuration details. Earlier SaRA versions also presented a configuration view and summary; those older descriptions can help explain the type of information a diagnostic report may contain, but they are not instructions to use SaRA as the current entry point.
- Choose a fix that matches the finding. Start with lower-risk actions such as updating Office and Windows or testing for a conflict. Move to profile or data-file repair only when the symptom or finding points in that direction.
- Recheck Outlook. After a change, reopen Outlook and test the task that was failing. If the issue remains, record the specific symptom and diagnostic finding before escalating, rather than repeating unrelated repairs.
The workflow is not optimized for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). If Outlook runs in a VDI environment, or Get Help is unavailable under organizational controls, an administrator may need to use an appropriate support path.
What should I do with the diagnostic report?
Treat the report as a way to narrow the problem, not as proof that every listed configuration detail is faulty. Match the result to what Outlook is doing, then change one relevant thing at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped and to avoid adding new variables to an already difficult issue.

If Outlook freezes or will not start
Outdated software, add-ins, corrupted profiles or data files, antivirus conflicts, and other conflicting programs are among the known causes of freezing or not responding. Updating Office and Windows and checking for add-in or other program conflicts are sensible early steps. A profile or data-file repair is a more targeted intervention; use it when the evidence points to that component, not simply because Outlook is slow once.
If sending, receiving, signing in, or connecting fails
Classify the failure before choosing a repair. A sign-in or connectivity problem is not automatically evidence of a damaged local data file, and a send/receive issue does not by itself establish that the profile is corrupt. Use the diagnostic finding and the account context—Microsoft 365 or Exchange, Outlook.com, IMAP, or POP—to decide whether to continue with desktop troubleshooting or ask an administrator to investigate a service-side problem.
If an add-in or another program may be involved
Add-ins and other conflicting programs can contribute to Outlook freezing or not responding. Test for a conflict before changing profiles or repairing files, since those changes are more consequential and may not address the cause. If the problem disappears after a conflict is isolated, avoid making unrelated data-file changes.

When should I repair an Outlook profile?
Profile Repair is a profile-level intervention, separate from repairing a PST or OST file. Use it when the issue or diagnostic findings point to the Outlook account/profile configuration, rather than treating it as a general-purpose fix for every failure.
In supported Outlook editions, the repair route is File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Select the account, choose Repair, complete the wizard, and restart Outlook. The repair option is edition-dependent; if it is absent, do not assume that an unrelated data-file repair is equivalent. Check the Outlook edition and seek support appropriate to that version.
After the restart, test the original problem. If the issue is unchanged, note that the profile repair did not resolve it and continue based on the actual symptom. Avoid repeatedly running the same repair without a new reason to expect a different result.

How do I repair a PST or OST file safely?
A PST/OST repair addresses a local Outlook data file, not the same thing as repairing an Outlook profile. If Outlook reports that a data file is damaged, close Outlook, make a backup of the file, and then use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, SCANPST.EXE. Microsoft recommends backing up the data file before using the tool.
- Close Outlook. Do not run the repair while Outlook is using the file.
- Back up the affected data file. Preserve a copy before attempting repair so you have a fallback if the repair does not produce the expected result.
- Run SCANPST.EXE on the affected file. Follow the tool’s prompts and review the outcome before reopening Outlook.
- Open Outlook and verify the relevant content. Check whether the original error has cleared and whether the mail or other content you need is available.
An OST associated with an Exchange account can be deleted and recreated, according to Microsoft, because it is a local copy that can be rebuilt from the account. That does not make deletion risk-free: verify that synchronization is complete and that no local-only content needs to be kept before removing the file. A server-backed mailbox and a local PST are not interchangeable; do not assume PST content can be recovered by recreating an OST.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should an administrator investigate?
If the diagnostic points beyond the desktop, or the problem affects a Microsoft 365 or Exchange service, an administrator can use diagnostics in the Microsoft 365 admin center or Exchange admin center. Availability varies by tenant environment. Users in organizations should involve their IT administrator when Get Help is restricted, when several people are affected, or when the issue appears to involve the tenant or Exchange service rather than one Outlook installation.

For individual troubleshooting, keep the distinction clear: Get Help is the desktop diagnostic entry point for classic Outlook; profile Repair changes the profile; SCANPST.EXE works on a data file; and administrator diagnostics address service-side or tenant questions. Choosing the right layer is safer and more informative than applying every available repair in sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the Outlook troubleshooter if my company blocks Windows Get Help?
Ask your organization’s IT administrator to confirm the approved support route. The Get Help workflow may be restricted by organizational policy, and the troubleshooter is not optimized for VDI environments.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SCANPST.EXE recover messages that were never synchronized to Exchange?
Do not count on that: SCANPST.EXE repairs a local data file, while recreating an Exchange OST rebuilds a local copy from the account. Preserve and verify local-only content before deleting or replacing a file.
Does the diagnostic tool automatically fix everything it finds?
The workflow reports known problems and configuration details and links findings to possible fixes. Review the result and select an appropriate action; a report is not a guarantee that every issue will be repaired automatically.
Can I use Outlook profile Repair on every account type?
The Repair option is available only in supported Outlook editions, and its presence depends on the edition. If you do not see it under File > Account Settings, confirm which Outlook version you are using before choosing a different repair.
