What “safe” means when you download outside Steam
A safe download has three separate properties: it is legally offered by the creator or an authorized store, it comes from a page whose identity you can verify, and the file passes your device’s security checks without requiring you to bypass warnings. A game can satisfy one condition and fail another. For example, a project may be free and legally posted on an open platform while still coming from an unknown creator whose archive deserves careful inspection.

Risk is not limited to obvious “cracks.” Malware can be hidden in an installer, a ZIP archive, a fake patch, a codec, a launcher or a file advertised as an unlocker. Use the official platform or developer domain as your starting point. Do not substitute a search result that merely copies the game’s name, a “download” page supplied by a commenter, a torrent, a repack, a crack site or an unofficial mirror. A familiar logo is not proof that the domain is genuine.
A safe download workflow, step by step
- Find the title on an official source. Open the real itch.io, GOG or Epic Games Store page, or reach the developer’s site through a verified creator profile. Check that the page uses HTTPS and that the publisher or creator name matches the identity associated with the game.
- Read the project or store page before clicking. Confirm the supported operating system, edition, file type and stated publisher. Look for a normal download button or the platform’s ordinary “install” control. Avoid pages that hide the file behind several advertising redirects.
- Compare the file with the page. The filename, version and publisher should make sense for the title. A horror game that suddenly requires a “codec,” “unlocker,” browser extension or system cleaner is not following a normal installation path.
- Keep protections enabled. Leave your browser’s dangerous-download protection, antivirus, operating-system reputation checks and firewall enabled. Google says Chrome automatically blocks dangerous downloads and protects devices and accounts from malware or viruses; attackers may ask you to turn those warnings off or ignore them.
- Save the file without opening it. Download the installer or archive to a known folder. Do not double-click it from the browser’s download bar simply because the page says it is required.
- Scan the saved file. Use your security software’s scan command on the installer or archive. If your system offers a second, reputable scanner, an additional scan can provide another signal, but a clean result is not proof that an unknown source is trustworthy.
- Inspect the archive before extraction. Confirm that it contains the expected game files and not a script, unrelated executable or “fix.” For password-protected archives, use the browser’s malware-check flow when supported. Cancel if the result remains dangerous or uncertain.
- Extract to a separate folder. Keep the original download until you have tested the game. This preserves a file you can rescan or report and prevents you from confusing a newly extracted executable with a legitimate one.
- Launch normally. Start the game through the platform’s standard control or the executable documented by the creator. Do not run a command supplied by a commenter to bypass an error, disable security or modify system files.
- Stop at any warning. Do not override a browser, antivirus, SmartScreen or Gatekeeper warning merely to force the game to launch. Delete the file, report the page and seek another official source.
How to evaluate an itch.io horror game
Check the creator and project page
Open the creator profile, read the project description and compare the publisher name with the game’s other official references. A page with a clear creator identity, version information, support details and a conventional download control gives you more to evaluate than an anonymous file-hosting link. Community comments can provide clues, but they are not an authority; never treat a commenter’s “fixed” installer or mirror as an official release.
Understand itch.io’s safeguards
itch.io administrator leafo says the service runs automated virus scanning on uploads and suspends accounts detected distributing malware. The administrator also says reports are reviewed daily and describes a desktop-app sandbox that runs games in a restricted environment. Those controls reduce exposure, but open publishing means a project page is not a blanket safety guarantee.

If a project triggers a warning, asks for an unexpected password, or directs you away from the normal page, follow that advice. A sandbox can limit what a game reaches while it runs; it cannot prove that the downloaded file is benign, and it may not protect files you launch outside the sandbox.
What GOG’s DRM-free model does—and does not—tell you
GOG documentation says its quality-assurance checks include DRM and that GOG games must be playable offline without the Galaxy client. Offline installers are useful when you want a conventional installer that can be stored and used without a client connection. “DRM-free” refers to activation and delivery, not price: a DRM-free game may be paid, and a free game still requires the same source and file checks.
Download an offline installer from the game’s official GOG page or account library. Do not assume that a link posted elsewhere is an authentic GOG installer just because the filename mentions GOG or the game is known to be DRM-free. Keep your browser and antivirus protections active, scan the installer, and verify that the publisher and release details match the listing.
How to use the Epic Games Store without over-trusting verification
Use the official Epic Games Store and its normal launcher for titles distributed there. Epic has a verification process for products using Epic Accounts, but Epic explicitly says verification is not endorsement and does not verify the trustworthiness or safety of a product or service. A badge therefore cannot replace source, file and behavior checks.

Be especially cautious when a page sends you to a separate download, asks for a second launcher, or claims that an “activation tool” is required. If the game is legitimately available through the store, the expected path is the store’s own install control. Treat any external executable as a new, untrusted download rather than as part of the store’s verification.
When a developer’s own website is the right source
Some freeware, prototypes and game-jam projects are offered only by their creators. Start from a verified social profile, an established platform page or another official reference that links to the domain. Check that the address uses HTTPS, the publisher name matches, and the same domain appears consistently across the creator’s public channels.
Be wary of an old project whose original domain has changed hands or stopped being maintained. An abandoned page may still be online while its download is no longer supported. If the creator’s current profile points somewhere else, use the current link rather than a search result or archive mirror. Never install a browser extension, “special downloader” or system utility just to obtain a game file.

ZIP and other archives
Archives conceal their contents until extraction, so scan the archive first and inspect its file list before launching anything. A game archive normally contains the game’s executable, data files and documentation. An unexpected script, unrelated installer, batch file or “patch” deserves a separate explanation from the creator before you run it.

Password-protected archives
A password can prevent ordinary inspection and is therefore a risk signal, especially when the password is supplied by a random post or a pop-up. For supported password-protected archives, use the browser’s malware-check flow. If the result remains dangerous or uncertain, cancel rather than entering the password and extracting the contents.
Installers and “fixes”
Do not run a file labeled “crack,” “unlocker,” “fix,” “codec” or “launcher replacement” merely because a page claims it is necessary. Legitimate troubleshooting instructions should identify the creator, explain the change and appear on an official support page. A file that demands administrator access without a clear reason is another reason to stop and verify.

A warning is a security signal, not an inconvenience to click through. Chrome says it blocks dangerous downloads and warns that attackers may ask users to disable or ignore those protections to avoid detection. Operating-system reputation tools and antivirus products can also flag an uncommon or unsigned file even when it is not malicious; that uncertainty still warrants verification, not an automatic override.

- Uncommon or unrecognized-app warning: recheck the publisher, source domain and file name. If you cannot independently establish who made it, do not run it.
- Password or encrypted-archive warning: use the supported scan flow and stop if the result is unresolved.
- Multiple tools disagree: treat the file as unsafe until the creator or official platform can explain the detection through a trusted channel.
Never disable Safe Browsing, antivirus, SmartScreen or Gatekeeper to force a launch. Re-enabling protection after an override does not undo whatever the file may have done.

Using a sandbox or isolated environment
itch.io’s administrator describes a desktop-app sandbox that runs games in a restricted environment. Isolation can reduce the game’s access to the rest of your system, which is useful for experimental titles, but it is a layer of defense rather than a verdict. A malicious file can still exploit a vulnerability, request credentials, or cause harm if you move it outside the restricted environment.
If you use a sandbox, keep the operating system and sandbox software updated, avoid sharing personal folders unnecessarily, and do not copy unknown saves or executables back to your main system. Continue scanning downloads and honoring warnings. Isolation should make a cautious workflow safer, not justify downloading from an untrusted mirror.

If you already ran a suspicious download
- Disconnect the device from the internet if you see unexpected pop-ups, new programs, disabled security tools or unusual account activity. This limits communication while you investigate.
- Stop the game and the suspicious process. Do not keep clicking prompts or entering passwords.
- Run a full security scan with your installed security software, allowing it to quarantine detected files. Follow the product’s remediation guidance.
- Review what changed. Check recently installed applications, browser extensions, startup entries and files created at the time of launch. Remove only items you can identify confidently; preserve suspicious files if your security provider requests them for analysis.
- Change important passwords from a separate, clean device if you entered credentials after running the file. Prioritize email, payment, gaming and password-manager accounts, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Report the source. Use the platform’s reporting channel or the developer’s verified contact. Include the project URL, filename, warning text and download time without redistributing the file.
- Escalate persistent symptoms. If scans cannot clean the system or security tools remain disabled, seek professional incident-response help or reinstall the operating system from trusted media after securing your data.
A quick decision checklist before you click “Download”
- Am I on the real platform or a developer domain reached through a verified link?
- Does the page identify a creator or publisher that matches the game elsewhere?
- Am I using the ordinary download or install control rather than a mirror, repack or commenter link?
- Is the file name, version and type consistent with the page?
- Are browser, antivirus and operating-system protections still enabled?
- Have I scanned the saved installer or archive before extraction and first launch?
- Did the file request a password, codec, unlocker, extension or security exception?
- If a warning appeared, did I stop instead of overriding it?
If you cannot answer the source and publisher questions, do not proceed. A free game is never worth weakening the protections that guard the rest of your computer.
