The safe way to add path-tracing enhancements to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is to identify your game patch and renderer first, make a complete rollback copy, install a version-matched mod, and test it before changing controls. The current optimization project documents support for patches 5.01, 5.00c and 5.00b, while the separate modRTToggle hotkey utility requires patch 4.04 or newer and DX12. A mod made for the old 1.32 branch can fail or crash on the 4.0-and-newer remaster.
What you need to check before downloading anything
Path tracing in the remastered PC edition is sensitive to both the game branch and the rendering API. Two files that appear to do similar jobs can target different versions: the Path Tracing and Ray Tracing Optimization (Remastered) project lists current compatibility with patches 5.01, 5.00c and 5.00b, whereas the modRTToggle utility documents a 4.04-or-newer DX12 requirement. Treat those as separate compatibility rules, not interchangeable labels.

Record your exact installation
- Start the game through your normal launcher and note the displayed game version. Record whether you use Steam, GOG or Epic, because each store can place the installation in a different folder.
- Record the launch mode. The game can be started in DX11 or DX12; write down which one is active before you install a file that expects a particular renderer.
- Confirm that you are on the remastered/Next-Gen branch (4.0 or later) if the mod documentation says so. A 1.32-era mod is not automatically compatible with that branch.
If a download page does not list your patch and renderer, do not guess. Find a release that does, or leave the game unmodified until the author documents support.

Back up a complete rollback set
Make the backup before copying a single mod file. A failed script compile, a bad setting, or an incompatible archive is much easier to undo when the original files are still available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Game installation: copy the entire Witcher 3 installation directory to another drive or a clearly named backup folder. At minimum, retain the unmodified files that the mod will replace.
- Saves: copy your local save-game folder. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a local copy because a damaged or unwanted save can synchronize before you notice.
- Configuration: back up
DocumentsThe Witcher 3user.settingsandDocumentsThe Witcher 3input.settings. - Mod state: if you already use mods, record their names and versions and keep a copy of the current
modsfolder. This gives you a known baseline when a script conflict appears.
Close the game and launcher while making configuration copies. Keep the backup outside the live installation so a file-repair operation cannot overwrite both copies.
Choose the right type of path-tracing mod
There are two useful categories in the current documentation. An optimization mod changes how ray tracing or path tracing is handled and exposes its own in-game controls. A hotkey utility does not claim to optimize rendering; it adds a quick way to switch modes and frame generation.
| Characteristic | Path Tracing and Ray Tracing Optimization (Remastered) | modRTToggle hotkey utility |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Optimization and runtime controls for RT/PT workloads | Hotkeys for cycling RT/PT modes and toggling frame generation |
| Documented game support | Patches 5.01, 5.00c and 5.00b (2026 project page) | Patch 4.04 or newer |
| Renderer requirement | Use the file that matches your installed branch and renderer; the project’s compatibility notes are authoritative | DX12 is required |
| Script conflict handling | Use Script Merger when it overlaps another script mod | Use Script Merger if its scripts conflict with another installed script mod |
| Where controls appear | Options > Mods in the game menu | F8 cycles RT/PT modes; F9 toggles frame generation |
| Reversibility | Can be disabled instantly through its menu control, then removed for a full rollback | Remove its files or restore the backup; bindings can be deleted from input.settings |
| Published performance evidence | Author reports measured gains on one Ryzen 7 5700X3D/RTX 5070 system, with a warning that results differ | Adds controls; the cited documentation does not present a performance benchmark |
Do not install both simply because they mention path tracing. Read each project’s requirements, then add one component at a time so you can identify which file causes a problem.
Install through Vortex
Vortex is the less error-prone option when the mod is packaged for it and your game is already detected. The exact button names can change with Vortex updates, but the sequence is stable.
- Open Vortex and select The Witcher 3 in the Games view. Let it detect the existing installation; correct the path if it points to an old or empty folder.
- Download the archive for your exact game patch and renderer. Do not select a 1.32 file for a 4.0-or-newer installation.
- Import the archive into Vortex, install it, and enable it. Check the Mod list for a warning about deployment or a missing dependency.
- Deploy the mod when Vortex asks. Open the deployed-files view and verify that the package produced a folder under the game’s
modsdirectory rather than an extra nested level. - If you use another script mod, run Script Merger after all selected mods are enabled. Review each proposed merge and keep the generated merged scripts in the game’s normal merged-script location.
Launch once after deployment. The first start can compile scripts; allow it to finish at the main menu before judging performance or closing the game.

Install manually without creating a nested folder
Manual installation is straightforward when you inspect the archive before copying it. The most common mistake is adding an extra directory level, such as The Witcher 3modsModNamemodsModName, which leaves the game unable to see the files.
- Open the downloaded archive with a file manager. Locate the supplied folder named
mods. - Open the game’s installation directory, the folder that contains the executable and existing game subfolders.
- Copy the supplied
modsfolder into that directory. Merge it with the existing folder when prompted; do not replace the whole folder if it contains other working mods. - Confirm the final path. Each mod’s folder must sit directly beneath
The Witcher 3mods. For example, a package folder should resolve toThe Witcher 3modsmodName, not to a secondmodsdirectory. - Start the game once and wait for script compilation. Quit normally, then inspect the log or in-game behavior before adding another modification.
If the archive contains instructions that differ from this layout, follow that project’s instructions; the author may supply files for a specific subfolder or launcher.
Resolve script conflicts with Script Merger
Script Merger is needed when two selected mods edit the same Witcher 3 scripts. A path-tracing mod can coexist with other changes until a shared script is touched, so a clean launch does not prove that no conflict exists.
- Run Script Merger after every group of script mods is installed.
- Let it scan the game’s
modsfolders and identify conflicting files. - Select a conflict and inspect the differing lines. Prefer the project’s documented merge instructions when they exist; otherwise preserve each mod’s required code rather than blindly accepting one side.
- Build the merged script and launch the game. If the game reaches the menu but fails when loading a save, undo the newest merge and test the mods individually.
Keep the merger output in your backup plan. If a later update changes the game scripts, you may need to delete the old merged result and rebuild it against the new files.
Configure RT, PT and frame-generation controls
Use the optimization mod’s menu first
The optimization project places its switches under Options > Mods. Enable the mod there, change one setting, and apply it before changing another. Its menu also provides an immediate disable control, which is the quickest way to determine whether a crash or visual artifact comes from the mod.

Set the game’s own ray-tracing, path-tracing, upscaling and frame-generation options before benchmarking. Changing several of these at once makes a result impossible to attribute to one setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfigure modRTToggle only while the game is closed
The utility uses F8 to cycle RT/PT modes and F9 to toggle frame generation. If you need to edit the bindings, close the game first and then open DocumentsThe Witcher 3input.settings. The modRTToggle README states: “IMPORTANT: only edit input.settings while the game is closed. If the game is running, it rewrites the file on exit and the bindings are lost.”
- Exit to the desktop and verify that the Witcher 3 process has ended.
- Make a fresh copy of
input.settings. - Edit the existing binding entries as documented by the utility. Do not paste duplicate sections or change unrelated controls.
- Save the file, launch the DX12 game, and press F8 once at a time to confirm the displayed mode. Press F9 and check the frame-generation indicator before starting a benchmark.
If your edits disappear, restore the backup, close the game again, and repeat the change. Editing while the process is running will allow the game to rewrite the file on exit.
Run a controlled first test
Do not judge a mod from a single glance at a crowded city street. Use a repeatable scene and the same camera route so that changes are meaningful.
- Launch with the mod disabled and record resolution, upscaler mode, frame-generation state, RT/PT state and average frame rate in a repeatable scene.
- Exit, enable only the new mod, and launch again. Allow shader or script compilation to finish.
- Repeat the same route and record average and noticeable low-frame-rate behavior. Note crashes, flicker, missing effects and input problems separately from frame rate.
- Change one variable at a time. For example, keep the upscaler and resolution fixed while switching PT, then test frame generation as a separate step.
- Keep the configuration only if it is stable across several minutes of play and a save reload.
The optimization author reports, on a Ryzen 7 5700X3D with an RTX 5070, approximately 12–14% higher ray-tracing performance and 21–37% higher path-tracing performance. Those figures are measurements from that system and the author explicitly warns: “Your numbers will be different. Check them yourself with Enable mod.” Treat the figures as a reference, not a guarantee.

Set realistic hardware and storage expectations
Path tracing is far more demanding than the standard renderer. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 PC requirements table names an RTX 5080-class graphics card for its current path-tracing target of 2160p, DLSS and 60 FPS with Frame Generation. The same documentation says that the path-tracing configuration was measured with upscaling and Frame Generation switched on. That target is therefore not a promise of native-resolution 60 FPS with those features disabled.
- Resolution: 2160p places a much heavier load on the GPU than 1440p or 1080p.
- Upscaling: DLSS or another supported upscaler changes the render resolution and is part of CDPR’s published path-tracing measurement.
- Frame generation: it can raise displayed frame rate, but it does not remove the underlying rendering cost or input latency considerations.
- System configuration: CPU model, memory, driver version, background tasks and scene complexity all affect the result. A benchmark from one machine cannot predict yours.
- Storage: CDPR states that an SSD is required for the latest enhancements. An internal NVMe SSD is a practical way to meet that requirement, but the requirement itself is the SSD, not a specific brand or capacity.
Start with a resolution and upscaling combination your hardware can sustain, then add path tracing. If frame pacing is poor, lowering output resolution or using a less demanding RT/PT mode is usually more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the same files.

The game crashes before the menu
- Remove or disable the newest mod and restore the backed-up configuration files.
- Check that the mod matches the recorded patch. A 1.32 package on a 4.0-or-newer installation is a frequent incompatibility pattern.
- Verify the renderer. modRTToggle requires DX12; launching DX11 will not satisfy that requirement.
- Rebuild script merges after removing the mod, then launch with only the remaining known-good files.
The mod does nothing
- Inspect the folder layout and ensure the mod directory is directly beneath
The Witcher 3mods. - Check that Vortex deployed the archive to the same installation used by the launcher.
- Confirm that you selected the correct patch variant and enabled the mod in Vortex or in Options > Mods.
- For the hotkey utility, confirm a DX12 launch and test F8 and F9 after the game reaches the menu.
Bindings revert after you edit them
Restore the copy of input.settings, close the game completely, make the edit, save it, and only then relaunch. The game rewrites the file on exit if it was running during the edit.
A save will not load or scripts report conflicts
Disable the path-tracing mod and any newly merged scripts, then test the backed-up configuration with a copy of the save. If the copy loads, rebuild Script Merger with the exact set of mods you intend to keep. Avoid saving over your only clean save while troubleshooting.

- Repeat the baseline test with identical resolution, upscaler, frame-generation and RT/PT settings.
- Check whether the game is compiling shaders or streaming assets during the first run.
- Compare a stable lower resolution before changing files. CDPR’s 2160p target assumes upscaling and Frame Generation, and your GPU may be below that target.
- Disable the mod from its menu. If performance returns, keep the stable configuration and report your measured result to the mod author rather than assuming the published percentage applies to your hardware.
Safely remove the mod and recover
- Use the optimization mod’s in-game disable control if the game still reaches the menu.
- Exit the game and disable or remove the mod in Vortex, or delete only the mod folder you copied manually.
- Undo any Script Merger output created for that mod and rebuild merges for the remaining mods.
- Restore
user.settingsandinput.settingsfrom your backup if controls or graphics remain altered. - If the installation is still unstable, restore the clean game directory and saves, then verify the game files through your store launcher before trying a different, version-matched release.
Keep the clean backup until you have completed several play sessions and at least one save-and-reload cycle. A mod that reaches the title screen can still fail later when a new area, script event or save is loaded.

A safe installation checklist
- Game patch, store and DX11/DX12 mode recorded.
- Mod release explicitly supports that patch and renderer.
- Game folder, saves,
user.settingsandinput.settingsbacked up. - Mod installed through Vortex or copied so its folder is directly under
The Witcher 3mods. - Script Merger run only when selected mods actually conflict, with its output reviewed.
- F8/F9 bindings edited only while the game is closed.
- Baseline and enabled benchmarks use the same scene and settings.
- Rollback files remain available until the configuration proves stable.
Final recommendation
For a remastered installation, match the mod to the exact 4.0-or-newer patch and renderer, install one component at a time, and preserve a clean rollback copy. Use the optimization mod for documented RT/PT changes and its in-game switch; use modRTToggle only in a DX12 setup when quick F8/F9 controls are the goal. Expect path tracing to require aggressive upscaling and frame generation on demanding resolutions, and trust measurements from your own repeatable scene over any single published percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an old Witcher 3 1.32 path-tracing mod work on the remastered game?
It may fail or crash on the 4.0-and-newer branch. Use a release whose compatibility notes explicitly include your installed patch and renderer.
Does modRTToggle work in DX11?
No. Its documented requirement is patch 4.04 or newer running in DX12.
Where should a manually installed mod folder go?
The mod’s folder must be directly beneath The Witcher 3mods; avoid an extra nested mods directory.
Why did my input changes disappear?
The game can rewrite input.settings when it exits. Edit the file only while the game is closed, as instructed by the utility’s README.
