Yes. LibreOffice documents can be saved to Google Drive through LibreOffice’s built-in Remote Files service. In LibreOffice, open File > Save Remote, choose Manage Services, add a service whose type is Google Drive, sign in with your Google account, and then save by selecting that service, a file format, and a filename.
If the Google Drive login does not work in your LibreOffice build, install Google Drive for desktop instead. It creates a Drive location that appears in the normal Save dialog. You can stream files to conserve disk space or mirror them for offline access. Native Remote Files is the cleaner workflow when authentication succeeds; Drive for desktop is the practical fallback when it does not.

How do I save a LibreOffice document directly to Google Drive?
LibreOffice’s Remote Files feature is the direct method. LibreOffice Help describes the feature this way: “LibreOffice can open and save files stored on remote servers.” Google Drive is listed as a supported remote-service type, so you do not have to download a document from Drive, edit it, and upload it again through a browser.
You need an installed LibreOffice version with the Remote Files commands visible, an internet connection, and the username and password for the Google account that will store the file. The account’s exact edition is not specified in the documentation, so do not assume that a consumer account and an organization-managed account will have identical sign-in policies.

Configure the Google Drive service once
- Open LibreOffice Writer, Calc, Impress, or another component.
- Choose File > Open Remote or File > Save Remote. Either command opens the remote-file workflow.
- In the remote-file dialog, select Manage Services.
- Add a service and set its type to Google Drive.
- Enter the Google account username and password requested by LibreOffice.
- Enable Remember password only if the computer and user account are appropriately secured.
- Assign a label that will make the service easy to recognize if you connect more than one remote location.
- Confirm the connection. The configured service should then appear in the remote-file dialog’s service list.
The label is only a local name for identifying the connection; it does not rename your Google account or a Drive folder.
Save a new or local document
- With the document open, choose File > Save Remote.
- Select the Google Drive service you configured.
- Browse to the Drive location where the file should be stored, if the dialog presents folders.
- Choose the desired document type in the Filter list. For example, select the appropriate LibreOffice format or an Office-compatible format before saving.
- Enter the filename.
- Confirm Save and wait for LibreOffice to complete the remote operation before closing the document or the application.
The format choice matters: Google Drive stores the file in the format you send it. The Remote Files instructions require you to select a filter and filename, but they do not say that LibreOffice will automatically convert a file into a Google Docs editor format.
Save changes to a file that was opened remotely
If you opened the document from a CMIS remote service through LibreOffice’s remote-file commands, ordinary File > Save or Ctrl+S saves it back to that service. For a new local document, use Save Remote the first time so LibreOffice knows which remote service and filename to use.
Can LibreOffice save to Google Drive without downloading the file first?
Native Remote Files removes the manual download-and-upload step: you choose the remote service from LibreOffice’s own dialog instead of opening a web browser and moving a file yourself. The operation still depends on a live connection and LibreOffice’s remote-file implementation, so it should not be treated as an offline copy of your Drive.

When you need a normal folder path that other desktop applications can use, Google Drive for desktop is a different model. It exposes Drive through the operating system, and LibreOffice saves to that location using its ordinary File > Save dialog. The desktop client then synchronizes the saved file with Google Drive.
Why can’t LibreOffice connect to Google Drive?
Authentication is the main qualification to the native method. LibreOffice’s current Help documentation still lists Google Drive as a remote service, but a LibreOffice bug report dated 7 October 2022 recorded failures in LibreOffice 7.4.1.2 after Google deprecated its OAuth out-of-band flow. The available documentation does not establish that every current LibreOffice release, account type, or security policy now authenticates successfully.
Try these checks before abandoning Remote Files:
- Update LibreOffice to the newest release approved for your operating system, then retry the service setup.
- Start from File > Open Remote or File > Save Remote, rather than looking for a Google Drive option in the ordinary local Save dialog.
- Re-enter the Google username and password carefully. If your organization requires a particular sign-in or blocks older authentication methods, its policy may prevent the connection.
- Remove and recreate the Google Drive service in Manage Services if the saved credentials or label are wrong.
- Test the account in a browser to confirm that it is active and that the intended Drive storage is available.
- If the same authentication error persists, use Google Drive for desktop; it uses Google’s desktop-client sign-in instead of LibreOffice’s remote-service login flow.
Do not interpret a failed native login as proof that your files are missing. It indicates that LibreOffice could not establish this particular remote connection.
How do I use Google Drive for desktop as a fallback?
Google Drive for desktop creates a Drive location on your computer. LibreOffice can save to that location with its standard Save dialog, while the Drive application handles synchronization. Google documents two modes: streaming, which uses minimal local disk space and downloads files as needed, and mirroring, which keeps a full local copy and makes files available offline by default.

Use the Drive location with LibreOffice
- Install Google Drive for desktop and sign in to the Google account that owns or can edit the destination folder.
- Allow the application to finish creating its Drive location in the operating system’s file browser.
- In LibreOffice, choose File > Save As for a new local file, or File > Open to edit an existing file in the Drive location.
- Navigate to the Drive folder, choose the filename and format, and save normally.
- Keep the Drive application connected until synchronization finishes. A file that exists locally is not necessarily available in Drive yet.
This approach does not use LibreOffice’s Manage Services dialog. The operating system sees a folder or mounted location, and LibreOffice treats it like any other local destination.
Choose streaming or mirroring
| Drive for desktop mode | Local-storage behavior | Offline behavior | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streaming | Uses minimal local disk space; files download as needed. | Cached files generally require Drive for desktop to be running and the account connected. Individual files must be made available offline when needed. | Computers with limited storage or users who are usually online. |
| Mirroring | Stores a full local copy of the selected Drive content. | Files are available offline by default. | Travel, unreliable connections, or workflows that must continue without internet access. |
Google advises waiting for recent changes to finish syncing before switching between streaming and mirroring. Changing modes while synchronization is still processing can make the transition harder to reason about, especially when a LibreOffice file was just saved.

Use native Remote Files when its Google Drive login succeeds and you want the shortest LibreOffice-centered workflow. Use Drive for desktop when authentication fails, when several applications need the same Drive folder, or when you require predictable offline behavior.
| Decision point | LibreOffice Remote Files | Google Drive for desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Depends on LibreOffice’s Google Drive remote-service login; historical OAuth compatibility problems were reported for LibreOffice 7.4.1.2. | Uses Google’s desktop-client sign-in. |
| Save location | LibreOffice’s remote-file dialog and the configured Google Drive service. | A Drive folder or mounted location shown by the operating system. |
| Disk use | Not specified by the Remote Files documentation; behavior can depend on LibreOffice’s remote-file handling. | Streaming minimizes local storage; mirroring keeps a full local copy. |
| Offline access | Not established by the cited Remote Files instructions; plan on needing a connection for the remote operation. | Mirrored files are offline by default. Streamed files need offline marking and normally require the Drive application for cached access. |
| Workflow simplicity | No separate synchronized folder is required when the service connects successfully. | More setup, but it works with LibreOffice and other applications that use normal file paths. |
A quick decision rule
- Choose Remote Files if you primarily work inside LibreOffice, have reliable connectivity, and the Google Drive service signs in normally.
- Choose Drive for desktop streaming if local disk space is tight and you are normally online.
- Choose Drive for desktop mirroring if you need the files during travel or an outage and have enough local storage for a full copy.
How should I choose the file format?
The Filter field in the remote Save dialog controls the format LibreOffice writes to Drive. Use the native LibreOffice format when you will continue editing in LibreOffice and need its full feature set. Select an Office-compatible format when the file must be exchanged with software that expects that format.

Saving to Drive does not make a format universally interoperable. Features specific to one editor can change when a document is opened and saved in another format. Keep the original format when preserving editability is more important than compatibility, and create a separate converted copy when both versions are needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can go wrong after the file is saved?
Most problems after a successful save are synchronization or location mistakes rather than LibreOffice formatting errors. Identify which method you used before troubleshooting.
The file is not visible in Drive’s web interface
- With Remote Files, reopen the remote dialog and verify the service and folder used in the save operation.
- With Drive for desktop, confirm that the Drive application is running, the correct account is connected, and synchronization has completed.
- Check the filename and extension; saving an exported copy can place it beside, rather than replace, the original document.
The file opens read-only
Verify that the signed-in Google account has permission to edit the destination. A file can be visible in Drive while the account has only viewing access. If the document came from a shared location, ask its owner or administrator to confirm the required permission.
Changes appear to be missing
Wait for the save operation or synchronization indicator to finish before shutting down, disconnecting the account, or switching Drive modes. Reopen the file from the same destination you saved to; a local copy in Downloads and a synchronized copy in Drive are separate files.

The native service still fails
Because the historical OAuth issue does not establish behavior for every current release, record the LibreOffice version and the exact sign-in error, then use Drive for desktop as the supported practical alternative. Avoid repeatedly deleting working local copies while testing authentication.
What is the safest routine for important documents?
- Decide whether you need a cloud-only workflow or an offline-capable local copy.
- Set up native Remote Files first if you want LibreOffice to manage the remote destination directly.
- Save a test document and verify its folder, filename, format, and appearance in Drive before moving important work.
- If login fails, configure Drive for desktop and choose streaming or mirroring based on storage and offline requirements.
- After each save, allow the remote operation or synchronization to finish before closing LibreOffice or disconnecting.
- Keep an additional copy of irreplaceable work in a separate location; Drive synchronization is not the same as an independent backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Google Workspace account to use this?
The LibreOffice instructions require a Google account username and password but do not specify whether the account must be consumer or organization-managed. If an administrator controls sign-in methods, storage, or third-party access, that policy can determine whether the connection succeeds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do before changing Drive from streaming to mirroring?
Wait until recent edits show as fully synchronized, then switch modes in Google Drive for desktop. This is especially important after saving a LibreOffice file, because changing modes while updates are still pending can complicate which copy is current.
Does saving to Drive convert an OpenDocument file into a Google Docs file?
No automatic conversion is established by LibreOffice’s Remote Files instructions. The format you choose in the Filter list is the format LibreOffice sends, so select the required format explicitly and verify the resulting file in Drive.
Can I use the same saved file from another computer?
Yes, provided that computer can access the same Drive account and destination and has the necessary LibreOffice or Drive-for-desktop setup. The documentation does not promise identical offline availability across computers, so check whether the file is mirrored or marked available offline on each device.
