To search open tabs, use your browser’s built-in tab finder: Firefox’s List all tabs menu and Search tabs, or Chrome’s Tab Search control. Firefox also accepts a % filter in the address bar; Chrome supports Ctrl+Shift+A (Windows/Linux), Command+Shift+A (Mac), and an @tabs address-bar command. These tools match tab metadata such as page titles and sites. They do not normally search every word in page bodies. For page-text searches, you need an extension that uses the browser’s find APIs, and you should review its permissions before installing it.
How do I search all my open tabs in Firefox?
Firefox desktop has two built-in ways to locate an open tab: the tab overview’s Search tabs field and a % prefix or suffix in the address bar. Both are intended for finding tabs by metadata, including titles and site names, rather than by reading every word on the page.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the List all tabs menu
- Open Firefox on your computer and look at the right end of the tab strip.
- Select List all tabs (the down-chevron button).
- Choose Search tabs in the tab overview.
- Type a word or phrase from the tab title or website name.
- Select the matching tab to bring it to the front.
The results update as you type, so a distinctive site name, article title, or product term is usually faster than entering a complete sentence. If several tabs have similar titles, add a second keyword to narrow the list.
Use the percent filter in the address bar
- Click Firefox’s address bar, or press
Ctrl+Lon Windows/Linux orCommand+Lon Mac. - Type
%, followed by a space and your search term. You can also place%after the term. - Choose the open-tab result from the suggestions.
The percent marker tells Firefox to limit suggestions to tabs that are already open. It is useful when the tab strip is crowded and you want to stay in the address bar instead of opening the tab overview.

What Firefox’s built-in search does not cover
Firefox’s native control is a tab navigator. It can use a tab’s title and site information, but it is not a full-text index of the page. A tab whose title says “Documentation” will not necessarily appear when you search for an uncommon sentence visible somewhere in that document. Use an in-page search with Ctrl+F or Command+F after opening likely tabs, or install a full-text extension when you need one query across many pages.
Does it search every Firefox window?
The documented instructions are for Firefox desktop and do not promise identical behavior across every window, profile, or browser release. If a tab is missing, check the other Firefox window, confirm that it is using the same profile, and repeat the search there. Mobile Firefox has a different interface, so do not assume that the desktop List all tabs control or percent syntax is available on a phone or tablet.
How do I search all tabs in Chrome?
Chrome’s desktop Tab Search opens a list of your tabs and lets you filter it by keywords. You can launch it with the toolbar button, a keyboard shortcut, or the @tabs address-bar mode.
Use the Tab Search button
- Find the small Tab Search button near the upper-right side of Chrome’s tab strip. Its exact icon can vary with the current Chrome design.
- Click the button to open the tab list.
- Enter a site name or words from the tab title.
- Select the result to switch to that tab.
Search terms are matched against tab information, so begin with a memorable title word or domain. If the result list is long, add another term rather than scrolling through every entry.

Chrome’s official desktop instructions explain how to find a specific tab but do not establish that every release searches all other open Chrome windows by default. Treat cross-window coverage as version-dependent. If a result is absent, check each Chrome window, look at the window’s profile indicator, and verify that the tab was not opened in a separate profile or guest session.
Can I search inside every open tab, not just titles?
Not with the built-in tab finders. Firefox and Chrome’s native controls are designed to locate tabs from metadata. Searching the words rendered inside pages requires a browser extension or custom WebExtension code that runs a find operation in each tab.

How the WebExtension approach works
The WebExtension find API searches text in a web page and highlights matches. Its find.find() function operates on one tab at a time, can target a specific tab ID, and supports options such as case-sensitive and whole-word matching. An all-tabs tool first queries the open tabs, then calls the find function for each eligible tab and collects the results.
Because each tab is searched separately, protected browser pages, extension pages, cross-origin restrictions, discarded tabs, and pages that have not finished loading may produce incomplete results. A result count is therefore not proof that every open document was indexed successfully.
What permissions are involved?
The find API requires the find permission. Code that reads tab URLs or enumerates tabs can also require the tabs permission or matching host permissions. An extension that searches page bodies may request access to data on all websites, which is more powerful than an extension that only reads titles.
- Tab metadata: titles, URLs, and tab identifiers used to build a list.
- Page data: text read from websites so matches and snippets can be displayed.
- Discarded tabs: pages unloaded from memory may need to be reactivated or may be skipped.
- Local files and PDFs: support varies by extension and browser permission settings.
Read the store listing and the install prompt, and choose the narrowest permission scope that still meets your task. Remove an extension when you no longer need broad website access.

Which full-text tab-search extensions are available?
Marketplace listings show that full-text options can go well beyond the native controls, but their features and versions change. The following details reflect the listings’ displayed information and should be checked again before installation.
| Option | Browser | Search and workflow features | Listing details | Permission note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search all Tabs | Chrome | Offline indexing of tab titles and content; AND/OR operators; snippets; local-file indexing; PDF search; URL copying; grouping matches into a new window; keyboard controls; closing selected tabs | Version 0.6.3; updated July 6, 2025; 10,000 users displayed; 4.6/5 from 65 ratings displayed, with ratings updated daily according to the listing | Review the requested access before allowing indexing of page content or local files |
| Search All Tabs for Text | Firefox | Searches text across all open and optionally discarded tabs; regular-expression, literal, case-sensitive, and all-words modes; clicking a hit jumps to its tab | Version 0.9.8.15; updated October 12, 2026 | Listing requests access to browser tabs and optional access to data for all websites |
These tools are useful when you remember a sentence, code symbol, name, or PDF heading but not the tab title. They also add controls that native tab finders do not provide, such as regular expressions or snippets. The trade-off is broader access to browsing data and another component that can become outdated as browser APIs change.

How can I find a tab when I have multiple windows?
Use a repeatable window check instead of assuming one global index. Start with the browser window where you last worked, then test the other windows and profiles if the tab does not appear.
- Search by the most distinctive title or domain term.
- If there is no result, identify every open browser window from the operating system’s window switcher.
- Run the browser’s tab search in each window, noting the profile or guest label.
- For page-body text, run the full-text tool separately in each window if it does not expose a cross-window option.
- Once found, bookmark the page or move the tab to a known window so the next search is easier.
Do not confuse a second window with a second profile. Separate profiles have separate tab sets, history, cookies, and extension contexts, so a search in one profile cannot be expected to reveal tabs in another.

What should I do if the tab search finds nothing?
- Search a title word, not a sentence: native tools usually match metadata, so try the site name or a short title fragment.
- Check spelling and punctuation: titles may use different capitalization, symbols, or abbreviated names.
- Check other windows and profiles: especially after using a guest window or a work/personal profile.
- Confirm the tab is still open: a closed tab requires history search or recently closed tabs, not tab search.
- Try page-text search: if you remember body text rather than the title, use an extension with the appropriate permissions.
- Reload an extension: a full-text index can be stale after a browser update, suspended tab, or permission change.
- Inspect discarded-tab handling: an extension may offer an option to include discarded tabs, while another may only search loaded pages.

Command+L |
| Chrome Tab Search | Ctrl+Shift+A |
Command+Shift+A |
| Search within the current page | Ctrl+F |

Firefox’s percent filter and Chrome’s @tabs mode are typed commands rather than separate key combinations. They are especially useful when you want to stay on the keyboard.
How should I protect privacy when using full-text search?
Assume that an extension with website-data access could process sensitive text from any page you permit it to inspect. Avoid indexing banking, health, workplace-confidential, private-mail, or password-manager tabs unless you understand exactly how the extension handles that data.
Recommended Free Tools
- Prefer local or offline indexing when the listing clearly states that content stays on the device.
- Review whether access is optional, limited to selected sites, or granted to all websites.
- Disable the extension when handling confidential sessions, then re-enable it for ordinary research.
- Check updates and permissions after browser upgrades; a feature change can alter the access requested.
- Clear an extension’s index before uninstalling if it stores snippets or cached page text.
For ordinary navigation, the browser’s built-in finder is the lower-permission choice because it does not add a third-party reader for page content. Use full-text indexing only when the time saved is worth the additional access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Firefox search tabs that are already closed?
No. The built-in Search tabs control is for currently open tabs. Use Firefox history or the recently closed tabs list when the page has already been closed.
Can Chrome search tabs from an incognito window?
Incognito tabs run in a separate browsing context. Whether a finder combines them with ordinary windows depends on the browser’s current behavior and profile, so check the incognito window directly rather than relying on a normal-window result.
Why does a full-text extension miss a tab that is visible?
The page may be protected, still loading, discarded from memory, or outside the extension’s host permissions. Activate or reload the tab, confirm the extension can access that site, and run the search again.
Can I search a PDF opened in a browser tab?
Support varies. Some full-text tools explicitly list PDF indexing, while native tab search generally sees only the tab’s metadata. If PDF text is important, verify PDF support and permissions in the extension’s current listing.
