The fastest way to secure Gmail is to complete Google Security Checkup, add recovery methods, turn on 2-Step Verification, and replace weak or reused passwords. For everyday protection, use a passkey or Google Prompt instead of text messages when your devices support them. Then review connected apps, browser extensions, devices, and Gmail settings, keep software updated, and treat unexpected messages as possible phishing. Prepare recovery options before you lose a phone or get locked out; security controls are much harder to set up during an incident.
What should I do first to secure my Gmail account?
Start with the security controls in your Google Account rather than changing random Gmail settings. Google’s Security Checkup presents personalized recommendations, highlights risky access, and helps you fix the issues most likely to affect your account.

Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- Open Security & sign-in.
- Select Recommended actions or Security Checkup.
- Resolve red warnings first, then yellow recommendations.
A green shield means Google has no immediate recommendation, not that every security decision has been made for you. Manually confirm that your recovery details, 2-Step Verification methods, devices, connected services, and password are still appropriate.
How do I add recovery email and phone details?
Add a recovery email address and phone number that you can access independently of your main Gmail sign-in. Google says these details can help block unauthorized use, alert you to suspicious activity, and recover the account after a lockout.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose recovery details that survive a device loss
- Use an email account you check regularly and that does not depend on the Gmail account you are protecting.
- Use a phone number you control, but do not rely on it as your only second factor because phone-number attacks can defeat text or voice codes.
- Keep both details current after changing your phone, mobile carrier, or alternate email provider.
Set up recovery before an outage, stolen phone, or suspicious sign-in. Google Safety Center also documents recovery contacts and, where available, a guided selfie-video recovery option. Availability can vary by account and location, so check the recovery choices shown in your account rather than assuming every option is offered.
How do I turn on 2-Step Verification in Gmail?
On a desktop browser, open Google Account → Security & sign-in → How you sign in to Google → Turn on 2-Step Verification, then follow the enrollment prompts. A password alone is no longer enough after enrollment: a thief who obtains the password still needs the second step. Work, school, and group-managed accounts may require an administrator to enable or control this setting.

Pick a second factor that matches your threat model
| Method | Best use | Security and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Routine sign-in on supported phones, tablets, and computers | Uses a fingerprint, face scan, or device screen lock. Google says passkeys resist phishing, credential stuffing, and other remote credential attacks because they use public-key protocols. |
| Hardware security key | Highest phishing resistance, including targeted-risk accounts | A small FIDO2/security-key device verifies sign-in. Check whether your phone or computer needs USB, NFC, or another connector, and keep a spare key or another recovery method. |
| Google Prompt | Convenient approval on a trusted phone | Google recommends prompts over text codes when you are not using a passkey. The prompt shows contextual device or location information so you can approve or deny the attempt. |
| Authenticator app | Offline one-time codes or unreliable mobile service | Codes are generated on the device and do not require a cellular connection. Protect the phone and preserve a recovery path if it is replaced. |
| SMS or voice code | Fallback when stronger methods are unavailable | Adds protection beyond a password, but Google warns that phone-number-based attacks can target text and call verification. |
| Backup codes | Emergency access after losing your usual device | Download or print the 8-digit codes, store them privately, and never send them to anyone who asks by email, chat, or phone. |
Are passkeys or hardware security keys safer than SMS?
For phishing resistance, yes. Passkeys and hardware keys authenticate with cryptographic credentials rather than a code that can be copied from a fake sign-in page or obtained through a phone-number takeover. Google describes passkeys as based on FIDO Alliance and W3C public-key standards; the private credential remains protected by your device or key.
When a passkey is the practical choice
Choose a passkey for regular sign-ins when your devices support biometric unlock or a screen lock. It removes the need to type a code and cannot be shared, copied, written down, or accidentally handed to a scammer in the way a password can. Add passkeys only on devices you personally control, and remove one when you sell, recycle, or permanently give away that device.
When a hardware key is worth the extra effort
A hardware key is appropriate when your Gmail contains sensitive work, financial, legal, research, or public-interest information, or when you face targeted attacks. Keep a second key in a separate secure location so a lost primary key does not become an account lockout. Test both keys before relying on them during travel or an emergency.

How should I protect my Gmail password and passkeys?
Use a long, unique password for Google that has never appeared on another service. Reusing a password lets a breach at an unrelated site become a direct route into Gmail. A trusted password manager can generate and store unique passwords and, on supported devices, passkeys.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Run Google Password Checkup to identify weak, reused, or compromised saved passwords.
- Do not enter your Google password on a page reached from an unexpected message or advertisement.
- In Chrome, Password Alert can warn about sites that imitate Google sign-in pages.
- Do not disclose a password, verification code, backup code, or passkey approval to someone claiming to be support.
If you suspect that a password was exposed, change it from a device you trust, then review active sessions and connected access. A password change is necessary but does not replace checking for unauthorized apps, forwarding rules, or browser extensions.
How do I check which devices and apps can access Gmail?
Security is also about access that remains after a legitimate sign-in. In your Google Account security controls, review the devices and sessions you recognize. Sign out of anything unfamiliar, old, or no longer under your control.
Remove unnecessary connected services
Open the list of linked apps and services and revoke access you no longer need. Pay special attention to services using less-secure sign-in technology or requesting broad access to mail, contacts, or account data. Removing access does not delete the third-party account, but it stops that connection from continuing to use your Google Account.
Audit extensions and local software
Delete browser extensions and mobile apps you do not recognize or no longer use. An extension with permission to read or change website data can expose information even when your Gmail password and second factor are strong. Keep your browser, operating system, and apps updated so security fixes are installed promptly.

Lock the devices that hold your sessions
Use a screen lock on every phone, tablet, and computer that can open Gmail. A passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock helps prevent someone with physical access to an already signed-in device from reading mail or approving a sign-in request.
How can I recognize and report Gmail phishing?
Google says it will not ask for your password by email, message, or phone call. Treat any request for a password, verification code, backup code, or urgent payment as suspicious, even when the sender name looks familiar.
Check the message before interacting
- Compare the complete sender address with the name displayed in the message.
- Hover over links on a computer to inspect the destination before opening them.
- Be cautious of unexpected invoices, account warnings, delivery notices, shared documents, and requests to “verify” your account.
- Do not reply to a suspicious request to ask whether it is genuine; contact the organization through a known, independent channel.
In Gmail, use the message controls to report suspicious mail as spam or phishing. Reporting helps separate the message from your inbox and gives Google information about the campaign. Also inspect Gmail settings for unfamiliar forwarding addresses, filters, delegation, or automatic replies; these can hide messages after an attacker gains access.
What is the safest way to prepare for a lost phone?
Prepare more than one route into the account before the phone disappears. Keep backup codes in a private offline location, enroll a passkey on another trusted device when appropriate, and maintain an accessible recovery email. If you use hardware keys, store a spare separately from the one carried every day.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

| Recovery email | High, if hosted and signed in separately | Compromise of the alternate mailbox can expose recovery messages. |
| Recovery phone | Variable; depends on retaining the number or replacing the SIM | Phone-number takeover or loss of service can block access. |
| Backup codes | High when stored offline | Anyone who finds an unsecured printout or file may use the codes. |
| Spare hardware key | High | It must be enrolled in advance and protected from theft. |
| Another enrolled passkey | High if the second device remains available | Leaving the passkey on a shared or sold device creates unnecessary access. |
After losing a phone, use a trusted device to review sessions, remove the missing device, replace recovery details if necessary, and contact your carrier if the number or SIM may be at risk. Do not wait until the incident to discover that every recovery method depended on the missing phone.

Should I enroll in Google Advanced Protection?
Advanced Protection is intended for people facing targeted attacks, including journalists, activists, and others whose accounts may be deliberately pursued. Google describes it as using security keys and blocking less-secure apps, which can reduce convenience and restrict some integrations.
For most users, a unique password, Security Checkup, recovery planning, and a strong 2-Step Verification method provide a practical baseline. Consider Advanced Protection when the consequences of account takeover are unusually high and you can accept stricter sign-in and app-authorization rules.

How often should I review Gmail security?
There is no universal calendar interval that replaces judgment. Run Security Checkup after a password change, a new device, travel, a lost phone, a suspicious message, or an unexpected sign-in alert. Recheck recovery details and connected apps whenever your devices, phone number, employer, or security needs change.

A short recurring review is useful: confirm the recovery email and phone, scan active devices, remove unused app access, and verify that your strongest available second factor is still enrolled. Security controls become less effective when old devices and abandoned services accumulate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Gmail 2-Step Verification without a phone number?
Yes, a phone number is not the only second-factor route. A passkey, hardware security key, authenticator app, or backup codes can provide access without receiving an SMS, although you still need a separate recovery plan for device loss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens to Gmail access when I replace my phone?
Keep the old phone available until the new device has a working passkey, Google Prompt, authenticator setup, or another enrolled method. After testing the new device, remove the old phone from your account’s device list and update recovery details if your number changed.
Can a Gmail delegate read my messages after I secure my account?
Delegation is separate from your password and second factor, so review Gmail’s delegation settings directly. Remove delegates you no longer recognize or need, especially after a job change, shared-project handoff, or suspected compromise.
Is it safe to save backup codes in a cloud document?
Only if that document is protected by an account and device you trust and is not broadly shared. An offline printout stored privately avoids making the codes dependent on the same online sign-in you may be trying to recover.
