How to See Better at Night in No Man’s Sky Without Losing the Atmosphere

For dark exploration in No Man’s Sky, start with the Exosuit torch. If a frost-like visor layer is hiding detail, reduce the hazard-related screen-effect strength; if the image still feels cluttered, test vignette, scanlines, and motion blur one at a time. Disable Auto Torch when automatic illumination breaks the mood, and try Minimal HUD only if you can navigate without persistent guidance. Keep environmental fog and lighting when you want atmosphere. HDR, SDR, and brightness depend on your display, so there is no reliable universal gamma value. Photo Mode’s fog, bloom, and depth-of-field controls affect screenshots, not the lighting of normal play.

Which settings help you see at night without flattening the scene?

The most useful order is to fix the actual obstruction rather than turn every effect off. A dark cave or night landscape needs the Exosuit torch. A white or frosted visor layer needs the hazard-screen effect control. A distracting frame needs selective changes to vignette, scanlines, or motion blur. A cluttered interface needs Minimal HUD. None of these controls is the same as changing planetary fog, cloud density, or the scene’s underlying lighting.

Control What it changes Use it when Trade-off
Exosuit torch Adds a forward light during exploration Terrain, cave walls, or objects are genuinely too dark Can reduce the darkness that creates a dramatic scene
Hazard-related screen effects Reduces overlays such as visor frosting A weather or hazard layer covers the image Does not remove physical weather or planetary fog
Vignette and scanlines Removes edge darkening or display-style lines The frame styling makes detail harder to read Less of the intended cinematic look
Motion blur Reduces blur during turning or movement Edges smear while you look around Fast movement may look less cinematic
Auto Torch Controls whether the game illuminates automatically You want deliberate control over when the torch appears You must activate the torch yourself
Minimal HUD Hides much of the compass, protection bars, mission notices, and nonessential markers Interface elements are competing with the landscape Important navigation and survival information is less visible

Hello Games has changed option organization across updates, so the exact menu path can differ by platform and build. Look for these names in General, Display, or Accessibility-related option groups rather than assuming an older screenshot matches your current interface.

How do I use the Exosuit torch for dark terrain?

Use the Exosuit torch first when the world itself is underlit. Hello Games says the torch works regardless of the time of day, and later updates improved its light and its interaction with fog and particles. That makes it the direct live-gameplay lighting tool, unlike Photo Mode controls that only affect an image you are composing.

When the torch is the right fix

  • Rock faces, cave entrances, flora, or resource nodes disappear into black areas.
  • You can see the sky or distant landscape, but the ground immediately around your character is unreadable.
  • Moving the camera reveals that the problem follows the direction you are facing rather than covering the whole screen.

Keep the torch on while navigating, then switch it off for a short view of the unlit scene. This lets you preserve a dark sky, colored fog, or glowing cave plants without sacrificing the ability to cross hazardous terrain. Cosmos-era changes specifically improved how torch spotlights interact with fog and particles, so leaving those environmental effects intact can produce a more atmospheric beam than an aggressively bright, flat image. See the developer’s Cosmos update notes.

Can I disable the automatic flashlight?

Yes. Hello Games introduced an Auto Torch disable toggle in General Options in the Living Ship 2.32 update. The feature lets you keep automatic illumination for convenience or turn it off so that dark compositions stay dark until you deliberately activate the Exosuit torch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original note states: “A toggle has been added to the General Options menu to disable Auto Torch.” Read the Living Ship Patch 2.32 notes for that introduction. Because later updates reorganized menus, your current build may place the toggle under a different heading or present it with slightly different wording.

Which Auto Torch choice fits your play style?

  • Leave it enabled if you frequently land in caves, explore at night, or do not want to manage another control.
  • Disable it if an automatic beam repeatedly interrupts a carefully framed dark scene, reveals you to yourself while stalking wildlife, or washes out colored fog.
  • Use manual activation after disabling it when you need a clear view for a climb, scan, or resource search, then return to darkness for the scene you want to experience.

How do hazard overlays differ from fog and weather?

Hazard-related screen effects are overlays applied to the visor view; environmental fog and weather are part of the world being rendered. Lowering the former can uncover detail without clearing the latter. It is therefore possible to reduce frost-like frosting or similar screen effects while retaining mist, dust, rain, or colored planetary haze.

Fractal added a strength control for hazard-related effects such as visor frosting and an option to replace white flashes with fades to black. If a hazard warning or frozen visor is the thing obscuring the image, lower that effect before changing atmospheric settings. The relevant update is documented in the Fractal update notes.

What the hazard control cannot do

  • It does not promise to remove planetary fog seen in the distance.
  • It does not make a storm disappear from the terrain or sky.
  • It does not replace protection management; hazard protection can still drain and require a response.

If the entire landscape remains hazy after the visor overlay is reduced, you are probably looking at environmental weather or fog rather than a screen effect. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether clarity or atmosphere is the priority.

Should I turn off vignette, scanlines, and motion blur?

Try these as separate experiments, not as a single “make it brighter” preset. Vignette darkens or stylizes the edges, scanlines add a display-like pattern, and motion blur softens the image during movement. Removing one may improve edge recognition while keeping the others for the visual style you prefer.

Vignette

Disable vignette if the corners of the screen hide cave walls, landing sites, or navigation landmarks. Keep it if the central subject is clear and you value a tunnel-like cinematic frame.

Scanlines

Turn scanlines off when their pattern interferes with small text, stars, or fine terrain detail. Scanlines are a stylistic overlay, so removing them changes presentation rather than the underlying planet geometry.

Motion blur

Lower or disable motion blur when turning the camera makes nearby edges smear. Foundation-era display options included a motion-blur control, but menu labels and locations can change. A lower setting favors readable edges; retaining some blur can make rapid movement appear smoother.

Do not assume that every effect belongs at minimum. Hello Games describes volumetric lights, glowing cave flora, and improved torch visuals as contributors to atmosphere. Change the overlay that blocks your view and leave the environmental effect that creates the mood.

What does Minimal HUD hide, and is it worth using at night?

Minimal HUD reduces persistent interface clutter rather than brightening the world. The Forsaken 7.10 update describes a mode that reduces the compass, hazard-protection bars, mission notifications, and nonessential markers. That can make a dark landscape easier to read because fewer bright symbols compete with it.

The cost is information. A new player may need the compass to orient, protection bars to notice a dangerous environment, and mission notifications to understand the next objective. Compare normal and Minimal HUD in the same location before committing, and switch back when a navigation or survival task requires the missing cues. Details are in the Forsaken update notes.

How should I compare HDR and SDR for dark scenes?

Compare the actual output on your own display instead of applying a gamma number from another setup. Fractal revised HDR rendering, and Cosmos later addressed HDR color-space and clipping issues. Those changes mean an HDR image can look different from older screenshots or guides, but the updates do not establish a best brightness or gamma value for every television, monitor, PC, or console.

Check the display chain

  1. Confirm that your monitor or television is genuinely HDR-capable, not merely receiving an HDR toggle from the operating system.
  2. On Windows, open Display settings and verify the HDR switch for the screen on which the game is running.
  3. Compare the same cave entrance or nighttime landing site in HDR and SDR, changing only the display mode.
  4. Choose the mode that preserves both shadow detail and bright stars, lamps, or hazard flashes without clipping either end.

If brightness changes noticeably when the scene switches from dark to bright content on a supported built-in Windows display, Microsoft documents content-adaptive brightness as one possible cause. That behavior is a display feature, not proof that the game’s gamma is wrong. The game’s HDR history is summarized in the Cosmos update notes and the Fractal update notes.

How do I tune visibility without losing atmosphere?

Use one change at a time and judge it in the same cave, storm, or nighttime landing area. This is a practical way to separate a blocked view from a deliberately dark scene; it is not a performance benchmark or a promise of a universal preset.

  1. Identify the obstruction. If surfaces are simply dark, activate the Exosuit torch. If a frost-like layer covers the visor, reduce hazard-related screen-effect strength.
  2. Choose automatic or deliberate lighting. Keep Auto Torch for convenience, or disable it when automatic light repeatedly breaks the composition.
  3. Remove only unwanted overlays. Test vignette, scanlines, and motion blur separately. Stop when edges and landmarks are readable.
  4. Decide how much interface you need. Try Minimal HUD for a cleaner view, then restore the normal HUD for tasks that depend on compass, protection, or mission information.
  5. Compare HDR and SDR. Use the same location and your actual display; do not copy an unexplained gamma value.
  6. Restore an effect that contributes to the mood. Volumetric lights, fog, particles, and glowing flora may be exactly what makes the scene feel like No Man’s Sky.

These choices balance five competing goals: terrain readability versus darkness, automatic convenience versus deliberate torch use, HUD information versus unobstructed scenery, visual effects versus frame-rate headroom, and HDR versus SDR on your hardware. Hello Games has suggested trying a lower resolution when PC frame rate is poor, but the cited updates provide no measured visibility gain or universal graphics preset.

Why doesn’t changing Photo Mode fog fix live exploration?

Photo Mode is a separate image-composition system. Origins documents controls for fog, cloud density, vignette, filters, and depth of field; Prisms added manual bloom control and revised depth-of-field behavior there. Those controls are useful for a screenshot, but they are not persistent gameplay visibility settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not lower Photo Mode fog expecting the next cave you walk through to be clear. Likewise, do not promise an exact time-of-day or fog-slider value across platforms: the cited material establishes the existence of composition controls, not a universal live-world preset. See the Origins update notes for the Photo Mode feature set.

What should I check when a dark image looks like a graphics fault?

First decide whether the scene is intentionally dark or technically broken. If menus, textures, or lighting show severe artifacts beyond ordinary night visibility, follow Hello Games’ PC troubleshooting guidance rather than endlessly changing atmosphere settings.

As of October 30, 2026, Hello Games’ October 29 Forsaken 7.11 post says the patch is live on Steam and rolling out to other platforms later. Check the platform-specific status before assuming a menu or fix is available. The post is at Forsaken 7.11. For severe PC faults, use the developer’s support article: I am experiencing severe graphics or performance issues on PC.

What is the best overall setup for dark exploration?

There is no single best combination for every planet or display. A strong starting point is the Exosuit torch available for manual use, hazard-screen effects reduced only when they obscure the visor, vignette and scanlines left on unless they interfere with detail, motion blur lowered if turning smears edges, Auto Torch disabled for deliberate compositions, and the normal HUD retained until you are comfortable navigating without it. Keep environmental fog, volumetric lighting, particles, and glowing flora unless they specifically prevent you from reading the terrain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then compare HDR and SDR on the screen you actually use. The result should be a deliberate compromise: enough light and information to navigate safely, with the world’s fog, color, and darkness still doing the atmospheric work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Exosuit torch work during daytime as well as at night?

Yes. Hello Games states that the torch can be used regardless of the time of day. It is therefore a navigation light, not a night-only feature, although you may switch it off when daylight or bioluminescent scenery already provides enough detail.

Will lowering hazard-screen effects stop storms from damaging my Exosuit?

No. The control changes the visual overlay, such as visor frosting, not the underlying hazard system. Protection can still drain and require shelter, resources, or another response even when the image is easier to see.

Why does my HDR image look brighter or darker from one scene to another?

Display-side behavior can contribute, especially content-adaptive brightness on supported Windows displays. Check the operating system’s HDR and adaptive-brightness settings before assuming that a universal in-game gamma value will solve the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Minimal HUD be used temporarily while taking screenshots in normal gameplay?

Yes. Treat it as a live interface mode and switch back whenever you need the compass, protection bars, mission notices, or markers. Photo Mode remains the separate place for fog, bloom, filters, and depth-of-field composition.
