If a Team Fortress 2 server is running but does not appear in the LAN browser, check its visibility setting before changing router settings. Valve’s May 2025 update replaced the old “Use Steam Networking” checkbox with four choices—Local, Friends Only, Unlisted and Listed—and made Unlisted the default. A server left on Unlisted can be running normally while remaining absent from the list you are checking.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Team Fortress 2 servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
For a same-network match, create the game through TF2’s current Create Server flow and choose Local. Confirm both computers are on the same local network, set sv_lan 1 when necessary, refresh the LAN tab after the host changes level, and use the host’s private address with connect <internal-ip>:<port> if discovery still fails. The sections below explain each check, the common port and firewall traps, and when Steam Networking is the better path.

“The server is running” and “the server is discoverable in the LAN tab” are separate conditions. TF2 can have a loaded map and an active host process while its selected visibility intentionally keeps it out of the browser you are using.
The May 2025 visibility choices
| Choice | Intended audience | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Local | Players on the same local network | Use this for a conventional home-LAN match. It is the clearest choice when both machines are behind the same router. |
| Friends Only | People invited or connected through your Steam friends context | This uses the Steam-facing invitation path rather than relying only on local browser discovery. |
| Unlisted | Players who receive a direct invitation or address | This is the post-May-2025 default. A server can be healthy and still not appear in a public or LAN list. |
| Listed | Players searching the applicable server listing | Choose this only when you actually want listing visibility; it is not required for two computers on one LAN. |
Valve described the change this way: “The ‘Use Steam Networking’ checkbox has been replaced with a dropdown, allowing the creation of Local, Friends Only, Unlisted and Listed servers — defaulting to Unlisted.” Consequently, instructions written before May 2025 that tell you only to tick or untick the old checkbox can send you to the wrong control.

Why the map command alone is no longer a complete setup
Launching a map from the console with map <mapname> loads the level, but after the 2025 behavior change it may not create a joinable game with the visibility you intended. Start with Create Server, select the desired visibility, and then use console commands only for the LAN-mode or diagnostic steps described below.
1. Prove that both computers are on the same network
Steam’s LAN rule is straightforward: a LAN client must be local to the server. “Local” means both systems can communicate on the same private network; being in the same building is not enough if one machine is on a separate guest, managed or otherwise isolated network.
- Connect the host and the joining computer to the same home router or the same permitted wired network.
- Temporarily remove VPN and proxy variables while testing. They can route game traffic away from the local path and make a correct TF2 setting look broken.
- If the network is managed by a school, workplace, hotel or apartment provider, check whether peer-to-peer traffic or the required game ports are restricted. Steam specifically warns that institutional networks, proxies, ISPs and other policies can block required ports.
Do not test a same-router connection with the household’s public address. Steam Support states that a client behind the same router must connect to the server’s internal IP address, not the external/public IP address. The public address is the wrong destination for the normal inside-the-LAN path and can fail even when local connectivity is fine.
2. Create the game with the current TF2 interface
- On the host computer, open TF2’s Create Server flow rather than starting with a console-only
mapcommand. - Set the visibility dropdown to Local for a same-network game.
- Choose the map and launch the server.
- Wait until the map has finished loading before asking the other computer to refresh its LAN browser.
If you selected Unlisted, Friends Only or Listed by mistake, change the visibility and recreate or relaunch the game using the current flow. Do not assume that changing a browser filter on the client will reveal a host whose game-level visibility excludes that browser.

3. Set LAN mode explicitly when the host needs it
When a host was started through an older procedure, or when the server behaves as though it is an Internet game, set the LAN variable directly in the host console:
sv_lan 1
sv_lan 1 is the LAN-only setting. If the map was already loaded, reload it so the new mode is applied to the running session. A practical recovery sequence is:
sv_lan 1; heartbeat; changelevel <map>
After the new map appears, run:
status
The status output is useful because it identifies the active server endpoint and confirms that the host is responding. If the host is meant to be an Internet server instead, Steam documents sv_lan 0; that is not the setting to use for a LAN-only match.
Changing sv_lan does not repair a blocked firewall, an isolated network or a conflicting client port. It only selects the server’s LAN/Internet mode, so continue with the connectivity checks if the browser remains empty.

4. Refresh discovery, then bypass it with a private-IP connection
Refresh the LAN browser at the right time
On the joining computer, open the LAN tab and refresh it after the host has completed the level load. Refreshing while the host is changing maps can leave the client looking at an old discovery result. If the host changes level again, refresh once more rather than assuming the previous list is current.
Use direct connect when listing is unreliable
Discovery is a convenience, not a requirement. On the host, run status and identify the private address and port shown for the session. On the client, open the console and enter:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →connect <internal-ip>:<port>
Replace the placeholders with the host’s private address and active port. For example, the command format is an address such as 192.168.x.x:27015, but use the exact values reported by status rather than guessing a port. This method follows Steam’s same-router rule and bypasses a missing or stale LAN listing.
If direct connect succeeds while the LAN tab stays empty, the game path is working and the remaining problem is discovery or filtering. If direct connect fails as well, investigate the network, firewall and port conditions below.

5. Clear firewall and restricted-network blocks
Steam warns that a Steam or game update can cause a firewall rule to block connectivity. Check the firewall on both computers, not only the host, and allow Steam and TF2 to communicate on the private network profile used for the match. A rule that permits the game on one network type but denies it on another can produce an apparently random LAN failure.
Recommended Free Tools
- After an update, revisit the existing Steam and TF2 firewall permissions instead of assuming they were preserved correctly.
- Temporarily disable VPN or proxy routing for the test, then restore it and create an appropriate exception if the connection works without it.
- On managed networks, ask whether the required game traffic is blocked. Steam identifies universities, proxies, ISPs and other network policies as possible causes.
- Test the host and client on a different private network only as a diagnostic. If the server appears there, the original network policy—not the TF2 map—is the limiting factor.
Do not begin with Internet port forwarding for a same-LAN problem. First establish that the two machines can communicate privately; forwarding a public port cannot correct a local firewall denial or an incorrect TF2 visibility choice.
6. Resolve client-port conflicts between multiple TF2 machines
Steam documents a default clientport of 27005 and says that only one game with that port can be active on the same LAN. When two TF2 clients behind one router both try to use the default, the second client can fail to establish the expected session even though both computers have Internet access.
Give each active client a distinct clientport value in the documented range from 27005 through 27032. For instance, one machine can retain 27005 while another uses a different value such as 27006. Apply the setting through the client’s Steam launch configuration, restart TF2, and test again. The important requirements are that the values are different and remain within that range; do not assign the same client port to both machines.
Best Value
- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
This conflict is different from the server’s listening port shown by status. Changing a client’s port will not make an Unlisted server appear in a browser, and selecting Local will not resolve two clients claiming the same client port.
7. Decide whether Local or Steam Networking fits the match
The visibility dropdown also determines whether you are treating the game as a purely local session or as a Steam-mediated session. Use the following decision guide:
| Goal | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Two or more computers on one permitted home LAN | Local | It matches the same-network use case and avoids relying on a public listing. |
| Friends joining through Steam invitations | Friends Only | Discovery follows the Steam friends context rather than only the LAN browser. |
| Private session shared by a direct invitation or address | Unlisted | The host remains out of general listings by design. |
| Intentional broader listing | Listed | Use when listing visibility is part of the plan, not as a fix for a local discovery mistake. |
Valve documents Steam Datagram Relay as a self-hosting option that can avoid traditional port forwarding. That path is useful when participants are not on the same local network or when a local network policy prevents a direct route. It does not, however, turn an incorrectly configured Local game into a visible LAN entry. First select the visibility that matches how players should join; then troubleshoot the corresponding network path.
8. Test Wi‑Fi versus Ethernet without confusing the result
Wireless discovery can be affected by interference or by an access point that keeps wireless clients from talking to one another. A wired test removes those variables. Connect both systems to the same router with Ethernet; a Cat6 Ethernet cable is sufficient as an optional hardware aid. The purpose is diagnostic consistency, not a guarantee that TF2 will appear in the browser.
If the wired test works, inspect the wireless network’s client-isolation or reliability behavior before changing TF2 commands. If the wired test fails in exactly the same way, return to visibility, private addressing, firewall and client-port checks. Ethernet cannot fix an Unlisted visibility selection or an incorrect sv_lan value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSymptom-to-cause troubleshooting
| Symptom | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Host is running, but nothing appears in the LAN tab after May 2025 | Visibility is still Unlisted or another non-local choice | Recreate through Create Server and select Local, then refresh after the map loads. |
| LAN entry appears briefly, then disappears after a map change | Stale discovery result | Wait for the new level to finish and refresh the LAN tab again. |
| Direct connect using the public address fails from the same house | Wrong address family for a same-router client | Use the host’s internal address from status. |
sv_lan 1 is set, but neither listing nor direct connect works |
Firewall, restricted network or port conflict | Check both firewalls, remove VPN/proxy variables, verify network policy and assign distinct client ports. |
| One of two local clients cannot join while the other can | Both clients are using default clientport 27005 | Assign the affected machine a different value between 27005 and 27032 and restart TF2. |
| Connection works only when using Steam invitations | Steam Networking path is working while local discovery is not | Keep the chosen Steam visibility for that audience, or return to Local and repair the LAN path if a browser entry is required. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the host on Unlisted: Unlisted is now the default, so “server started successfully” does not imply “server should be listed.”
- Using
mapas the entire setup: Loading a map does not select the post-2025 visibility behavior. - Using the public IP inside the same LAN: Same-router clients should use the private address.
- Changing only the host firewall: The joining computer’s firewall can block the return path too.
- Assuming
sv_lan 1solves every failure: It selects LAN mode but cannot override network isolation or a duplicate client port. - Forwarding ports before testing locally: Traditional forwarding is unnecessary for a same-LAN Local game and does not repair local discovery.
- Changing several variables at once: Test in order—visibility, same-network addressing, direct connect, firewall policy, then client ports—so the successful change identifies the cause.
A clean recovery sequence
For a repeatable reset, close the joining attempt, place both computers on the same permitted network, and remove VPN or proxy routing. On the host, use Create Server with Local selected. If the session came from an older setup, enter sv_lan 1; heartbeat; changelevel <map>, wait for the map, and run status. Refresh the client’s LAN tab. If the entry is still absent, use the private address and port from status with connect <internal-ip>:<port>. A failed direct connection points to firewall, network-policy or client-port work; a successful direct connection proves that only browser discovery remains to be solved.
