Windows 11 includes a built-in alarm in the Clock app, so you do not need to install another program. Open Start, launch Clock, choose Alarm, create an alarm, and set its time. Microsoft says alarms continue to work when the Clock app is closed or the device is locked. A locked screen is not the same as a sleeping computer, however: if Windows warns that the device must stay awake for notifications, adjust Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Keep a laptop or tablet plugged in and raise its volume if you need to hear the alert.
How do I set an alarm on Windows 11?
Use the native Clock app. The complete path is Start > Clock > Alarm > add/new alarm; then choose the time in the alarm editor and save it. The alarm is handled by Windows rather than by a separate browser tab, and Microsoft states that it can alert you even when Clock is closed or the device is locked.

- Open Clock. Select Start and find Clock in the app list, or type Clock in the taskbar search box and open the result.
- Open the Alarm section. In Clock, select Alarm.
- Create an alarm. Select the add or new-alarm control. The exact icon can vary with the current Clock app build, but it is the control that creates another alarm.
- Set the time. Choose the hour and minute in the alarm editor, then confirm the alarm using the editor’s save or confirmation control.
- Make the device audible and able to wake. If Windows displays a warning that notifications require the device to be awake, review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Plug in a laptop or tablet and set the device volume high enough to hear the sound.
When the alert appears, select Snooze to postpone it or Dismiss to stop it. The on-screen controls are preferable to simply closing a notification because they tell Windows whether you want a delay or a final stop.
Will a Windows 11 alarm ring when my laptop is locked?
Yes. Microsoft says, “Alarms and timers work even if the app is closed or your device is locked.” Locking Windows with Windows key + L therefore does not, by itself, cancel an alarm.

Do not confuse a locked computer with a sleeping computer. Locking protects the session while Windows remains available. Sleep reduces the device’s activity, and Windows may warn that notifications need the device to be awake. If you see that warning, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep and change the sleep behavior sufficiently for the alarm to be delivered. The right setting depends on whether the computer is plugged in or running on battery; a portable device should generally be connected to power for a time-critical alarm.
What if the lid is closed or the screen is off?
A dark screen does not prove that Windows is asleep. The display can turn off while the system remains awake, whereas closing a lid commonly triggers a sleep action according to the device’s power configuration. If an alarm failed with the lid closed or after a long idle period, check the Screen and sleep settings before changing the alarm itself. For an important wake-up reminder, leave the device open, connected to power, and where its speaker can be heard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I check before relying on an alarm?
Three conditions determine whether a correctly scheduled alarm is useful: Windows must have the correct clock time, the computer must be able to deliver notifications, and the audio must be audible.
- Power: Connect a laptop or tablet to its charger. Battery-saving behavior and an exhausted battery can prevent an audible alert.
- Volume: Raise the main device volume and make sure the selected output is the speaker or headphones you expect to hear. A muted system can still display an alarm while producing no sound.
- Wake behavior: Read any warning shown by Clock about keeping the device awake, then review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep.
- Clock accuracy: If the displayed time is wrong, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Check the selected time zone and whether Windows should set the time automatically or use a manual setting.
These checks matter most for a laptop used as an overnight alarm. A desktop connected to continuous power is less likely to lose power, but it can still be too quiet, set to the wrong time zone, or configured to sleep when notifications require it to stay awake.

What is the difference between an alarm, a timer, and Focus?
Choose the feature by the way you want the alert to start: an alarm starts at a clock time, a timer counts down from a duration, and Focus structures a work session.
| Windows 11 feature | Trigger | Best use | Relevant behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alarm | A specific clock time | A wake-up, appointment reminder, or one-time time-of-day alert | Found in Clock’s Alarm section; create one with the add/new-alarm control. Microsoft says alarms work while Clock is closed or the device is locked. |
| Timer | A countdown duration | Cooking, a game-session limit, exercise, or any task measured from now | Clock provides four preset timers and a control for creating another timer. |
| Focus | A planned concentration session with a countdown | Study or work blocks where you may want scheduled breaks | Focus can include optional breaks and can turn on Do not disturb for the session. |
A timer is the wrong choice when the requirement is “alert me at 7:00,” because its end time changes if you start it late. Conversely, an alarm is less convenient for “give me 25 minutes” because you must calculate a clock time first. Focus is intended for a session rather than a stand-alone reminder.
How do snooze and dismiss work?
When the alarm notification appears, choose Snooze if you want Windows to delay the alert, or Dismiss if the reminder is finished. Snooze is useful when you need a short extension; Dismiss ends the current alert so it does not continue to demand attention.
If you miss the pop-up, the notification center is the place to inspect recent alerts. Select the taskbar clock or notification bell, or press Windows key + N. Whether an old alarm remains visible there depends on Windows’ notification state and how long the alert has been retained, so the notification center should be treated as a way to check recent activity, not as a replacement for an audible alarm.

Why did my Windows 11 alarm make no sound?
Start with the simplest causes: muted or low volume, an unplugged portable computer, and a system that slept when Windows needed to remain awake.
The alarm appeared but was silent
- Increase the device volume before the scheduled time.
- Confirm that the output device is connected and turned on. If you switched between speakers, a monitor, Bluetooth audio, or headphones, the alert may be routed somewhere you are not listening.
- Keep the laptop or tablet plugged in, especially for a long or overnight delay.
These steps address an audible alarm that was delivered but could not be heard. They do not change the scheduled time.

The alarm never appeared after the lid was closed or the screen went dark
Review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. A screen that is off can still leave Windows awake, but a sleeping system may not deliver the alert in the way Clock requires. If the device showed an awake-device warning, follow that warning rather than assuming the lock screen is the problem.
The alarm arrived at the wrong time
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time and inspect the time zone. Decide whether automatic time and automatic time-zone selection are appropriate for your location. A manually selected zone can remain wrong after travel, while an incorrect system clock shifts every alarm even though the alarm itself was entered correctly.

Other notifications are missing while the alarm works
Check Settings > System > Notifications and the rules for Do not disturb. Do not disturb still allows banners for alarms, reminders, and selected apps; other notifications may be sent quietly to the notification center instead of appearing as banners. This means a working alarm does not prove that every other notification is configured to pop up.
Can I create a recurring alarm on Windows 11?
The official Windows guidance for this procedure explains creating an alarm but does not document repeat-day or recurring-schedule controls. The Clock interface on your Windows 11 build may show additional scheduling options, but those controls should be verified directly in the current alarm editor rather than assumed from another version or screenshot.

Wake-up alarm on a laptop
- Create the clock-time alarm in Clock > Alarm.
- Connect the charger and place the laptop where its speaker is audible.
- Check volume and the Screen and sleep settings.
- Lock the device if you want the session protected; locking alone does not prevent the alarm.
Short break during a game or download
Use a Timer when the interval starts now. A countdown avoids calculating a future clock time and is easier to adjust when the activity begins late.
Study session with planned breaks
Use Focus when you want a countdown, optional breaks, and the option to turn on Do not disturb for the session. Use an alarm instead when the important fact is a specific time of day, such as an online event’s start.

What are the essential checks if an alarm matters?
- Open Clock and confirm the alarm is present in the Alarm section.
- Verify the Windows date, time, and time zone at Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Keep the device powered and heed any warning that it must stay awake.
- Set an audible volume and confirm the intended speaker or headphone output.
- Know how to use Snooze and Dismiss when the alert appears.
- If you think an alert was missed, open the notification center with the taskbar clock, notification bell, or Windows key + N.
For ordinary reminders, the built-in Clock app is sufficient. The main limitation is not the alarm editor itself but the computer’s power state, clock configuration, notification rules, and audio path. Check those four areas whenever an alarm seems unreliable.

Does closing the Clock app delete or cancel a Windows 11 alarm?
No. Microsoft states that alarms and timers continue to work when the Clock app is closed. Closing the app is different from changing or removing the alarm in its editor.
Will Do not disturb block an alarm banner?
Alarms and reminders are allowed during Do not disturb, along with banners from apps you have specifically permitted. Other notifications can be moved to the notification center instead of appearing as banners.
How can I check whether Windows recorded a missed alert?
Open the notification center by selecting the taskbar clock or notification bell, or press Windows key + N. It shows recent notification activity, although it should not be treated as a guarantee that every missed alarm remains available indefinitely.
Why is my alarm time wrong after traveling?
Windows may still be using the previous time zone or a manual clock setting. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time and review the selected time zone and automatic time options before creating another alarm.
How many alarms can I create in Clock?
The documented procedure provides an add/new-alarm control but does not state a numeric limit. Use the current Alarm interface on your Windows 11 installation to add the entries you need and verify each one there.
