Use the child’s own account inside your platform’s family group—not an adult account shared on the console. Then configure two separate controls: a schedule or daily allowance for play, and purchase rules for store spending. Xbox and Windows use Microsoft Family Safety, PlayStation uses Family Management or the PlayStation Family app, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app plus Nintendo Account purchase restrictions.
Choose the platform and country first. Menu names and availability can vary by region; the PlayStation spending instructions linked below are UK support documentation, while the PlayStation Family app and Nintendo pages are US pages.

Start with the right family account
Parental controls are attached to family accounts and child profiles. If a child plays while signed in to a parent’s account, the platform may treat that activity as the adult’s and bypass the intended limits. Create or select the child profile in the platform’s family group, verify the child’s email where required, and have the child sign in to that profile on the console or computer.
- Xbox and Windows: add the child’s Microsoft account to Microsoft Family, then manage it in Family Safety or Xbox Family Settings.
- PlayStation: use Family Management and confirm the child has completed email verification and signed in on the console.
- Switch and Switch 2: pair the console and Nintendo Account with the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
Time controls and spending controls are independent. A bedtime does not stop a child from buying content before bedtime, and a purchase restriction does not limit play time.

Xbox and Windows: set play-time limits
Microsoft Family Safety manages limits across Windows, Xbox, and connected Android devices. Xbox’s companion app manages console activity on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; Windows limits work when the child is signed in with the Microsoft account linked to your family group. Do not assume the Xbox app controls games played on a phone.
Configure a daily allowance and schedule
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child’s family profile. The same controls are available on the web version in the Apps, features, and games tab.
- Choose Windows, Xbox, or Mobile, depending on the device you want to manage.
- Select Set time limits, then open Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits, choose the game or app, and set the daily allowance.
- Set the permitted hours. You can use one schedule for every day or customize start and end times for individual days such as school nights and weekends.
- Save the setting and have the child launch the title while signed in to the family-linked Microsoft account. A limit attached to a different profile will not govern that session.
Use a short allowance for school nights and a longer one on weekends if that matches your household rules. Because limits can be assigned to individual games, you can allow a homework-friendly title while restricting a game with longer sessions.
Review activity and pause access
Xbox Family Settings provides activity and spending review and a way to pause play. If a child needs extra time for a specific day, change that day’s allowance rather than removing the recurring schedule. Check that the correct device category (Xbox, Windows, or Mobile) is selected when troubleshooting a limit that appears not to apply.

Xbox and Windows: control purchases
Microsoft’s system is balance-based, not a monthly allowance that automatically refreshes. Add money to the child’s Microsoft account; the child cannot spend more than the available balance. Microsoft says approval is required for purchases above the child’s age limit or when the balance is exhausted. If a payment card is attached to the child account, an organizer can turn on Require approval for every purchase. Purchase notifications and spending activity help you audit transactions.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child.
- Open spending or purchase settings and review the account balance and recent activity.
- Add only the amount you are prepared to make available, or enable approval for every purchase when a card is present.
- Turn on notifications so an adult sees purchase requests and completed transactions.
- Test with the child account before relying on the rule: sign in as the child, attempt a low-cost purchase, and confirm that the balance or approval behavior matches your setting.
Purchases billed outside Microsoft’s store are separate. If a game uses its own website, payment processor, or account wallet, apply controls in that game’s account as well; Microsoft’s family spending rule cannot automatically govern non-Microsoft billing.
PlayStation: set play-time controls
Use Family Management through Account Management, the console, or the PlayStation Family app. The child must complete email verification and sign in on the PlayStation console for controls to operate as intended. The app requires iOS 14 or later on Apple devices or Android 8 or later on Android devices, according to Sony’s US app page: PlayStation Family app requirements.

Set when and how long the child can play
- Open the PlayStation Family app or Family Management and select the child account.
- Open play-time controls and choose the permitted hours and total duration.
- Apply different settings to different days if your schedule changes between school days and weekends.
- Choose what happens when time runs out: a reminder, or a block that prevents continued play.
- Ask the child to sign in to the child account on the console, then verify that the remaining time and end-of-session behavior appear correctly.
A reminder is useful when a child needs time to save progress; blocking is stricter when the end time must be reliable. The app can also alert you when the allowance is nearly over, depending on the notification settings on the phone.
PlayStation: set a monthly spending limit
PlayStation Store purchases made through the child’s account draw from the family manager’s wallet. Sony documents the child’s monthly spending limit as zero by default, so purchases remain blocked until an adult chooses a higher amount. This is a monthly wallet limit rather than a prepaid child balance.
- Open Family Management in Account Management or the PlayStation Family app and select the child.
- Edit Monthly Spending Limit and enter the amount you are willing to permit for the month.
- On PS5, the console path is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > [child] > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Save the setting and check which adult is designated as the family manager. A guardian may be able to change controls, but wallet ownership and management remain tied to the family manager.
- Test the child account and review wallet activity after the first purchase.

Third-party services can have their own rules. Sony notes that communications in Roblox are independent of console parental controls. Treat any purchase or chat system that uses a separate game account as a second control surface.

Nintendo’s free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app controls how long and how late a paired Switch or Switch 2 can be used. It is a time-management tool, not the eShop spending cap. Nintendo says two parents or guardians can share control of the same console.

- Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on a parent’s phone.
- Sign in with the Nintendo Account that will manage the console and follow the app’s pairing instructions.
- On the Switch or Switch 2, enter the registration code shown in the app. Keep the app and console connected to the correct Nintendo Account.
- Set a daily play duration and the latest time play may continue. Use separate settings for school nights, weekends, or holidays.
Choose the end-of-time behavior
When the allowance is reached, the app can display an on-screen alarm. You can also enable automatic software suspension, which interrupts the game rather than merely warning the child. A parent can add time or temporarily disable the alarm or suspension by entering the app’s PIN. If a limit appears ineffective, check that the console is still paired and that the child is using the Nintendo Account associated with the app.

Restrict eShop purchases separately
Nintendo says restrictions for Nintendo eShop products and services are handled in Nintendo Account settings. The parental-controls app’s time limit does not itself create a spending cap. Use Nintendo’s current account support instructions for the exact purchase-setting route, because labels can change by country and account type: Nintendo Switch Parental Controls.
How to choose a practical rule
- Use a daily allowance when you want a predictable total amount of play, such as 90 minutes on school days.
- Use allowed hours or a bedtime when the key issue is late-night access. A child might otherwise spend the entire allowance immediately after school.
- Use per-game limits on Xbox and Windows when one title needs tighter control than the rest of the library.
- Use approval for every purchase when a payment card is available and you want to review each transaction.
- Use a prepaid balance on Microsoft accounts when you want a hard ceiling without attaching a card.
- Keep the platform limit and game-account limit aligned when a title has its own store, wallet, or communication system.
Explain the rule before enforcing it: tell the child the daily amount, the end time, what happens when time expires, and how to request an exception. A visible schedule reduces arguments and makes an occasional extension a deliberate adult action rather than a password guess.
Troubleshooting when a limit does not work
The child can keep playing after the limit
- Confirm the child is signed in to the child account, not an adult profile.
- Check that the device selected in the rule matches the device being used: Xbox, Windows, Mobile, PlayStation, or Switch.
- Verify that the console or PC is online and has synchronized the family settings.
- On PlayStation, confirm email verification and the child’s console sign-in.
- On Nintendo, verify the app pairing and enter the parental PIN only through the parent’s app.
A purchase was not blocked
- Identify where the charge appeared: Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, or a third-party game account.
- Review the child’s account wallet, family-manager wallet, and purchase history.
- On Microsoft, check whether a card is attached and whether Require approval for every purchase is enabled.
- On PlayStation, confirm the monthly limit is not still zero if purchases are intended, and verify the correct family manager.
- For Nintendo, review Nintendo Account purchase restrictions rather than the time-control app.
The app cannot connect or another adult needs access
Update the companion app and sign in with the account that owns family-management rights. Nintendo supports two shared parent or guardian controllers. On PlayStation and Microsoft, use the organizer or family-manager account that created the child relationship; a second adult may have fewer permissions.

Time and spending controls do not automatically moderate every chat, voice channel, or social feature. Configure the game’s own privacy and communication settings when the platform cannot see activity inside a third-party account. Features such as Switch 2 GameChat can have age and account requirements that vary by region. Microsoft and PlayStation account behavior also depends on country, age classification, and the child profile’s family relationship.
Review settings after major console, app, or account updates. Official screens can change, and a family account created in one country may show different labels from the support page you are reading. Keep the parent PIN or account password private, enable purchase notifications, and check transaction history regularly rather than relying only on the initial setup.
