On PS5, set a child’s limit at Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child account > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. To protect an adult account, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings > Require Password at Checkout. A new child account starts with a monthly limit of 0, while checkout-password protection does not cover child accounts or wallet top-ups.
Choose the control that matches the account
PlayStation provides two different purchase controls on PS5. The monthly spending limit is a family-management control for a child account. It sets the maximum amount that child account may spend in the PlayStation Store during the month, with purchases charged to the family manager’s wallet. Require Password at Checkout is an authentication control for an adult account: the account sign-in password must be entered when a purchase is made.

| Control | Account covered | What it controls | Where it applies | Who changes it | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Spending Limit | Child account | Maximum monthly PlayStation Store spending | That child’s purchases, using the family manager’s wallet | Family manager or an authorized parent/guardian with permission | New child accounts begin at 0; the child cannot add payment methods or wallet funds |
| Require Password at Checkout | Adult account | Password confirmation before a purchase | All devices used to access that PlayStation Store account | The account holder | It does not apply to child accounts or wallet funding |
If the goal is to stop a child from buying games, use a separate child account and set its monthly limit. If the goal is to prevent an adult account from being used for an accidental or unauthorized purchase, enable the checkout-password requirement.

Identify which account will actually make the purchase. The PS5 can hold several profiles, but the controls follow the PlayStation account and family role, not simply the physical console. A child playing from an adult profile is not governed by the child limit. Conversely, changing a child’s limit does not change the purchase behavior of an adult profile.

- Have the family manager or an authorized parent/guardian sign in before opening family settings.
- Check the child’s name or profile carefully if several children belong to the family.
- Keep the adult account’s sign-in password private.
- Decide whether the child should have no permitted spending (0) or a family-approved monthly allowance.
- Remember that the family manager controls the wallet and payment methods; a child account cannot add them.
These checks prevent the most common setup error: changing a perfectly valid setting on the wrong profile and then assuming the control failed.
Set a child’s monthly spending limit on PS5
You must sign in as the family manager, or as a parent or guardian whose assigned permissions allow family settings to be changed. The setting is attached to the child account, not merely to the console, so choose the correct child before saving.
PS5 menu path
- Sign in to the PS5 with the family manager account or an authorized parent/guardian account.
- Open Settings from the top-right of the home screen.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Open Family Management.
- Choose the child account you want to control.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Choose Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the permitted monthly amount and save the change.
The exact place to find the control is therefore Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > [child account] > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. The bracketed wording identifies the child you select in the menu; it is not a field you type.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What the amount means
Sony sets a newly created child account’s monthly spending limit to 0. At that value, the child has no permitted PlayStation Store spending under the family setting. Raising the value authorizes spending up to the amount assigned for that child. Sony describes the cap as a monthly limit; the support guidance does not specify a particular reset hour or calendar-day rule, so do not assume that changing it mid-month will produce a specific prorated result.
The amount is a ceiling, not a prepaid balance. It does not move to another child account and does not turn into money the child can withdraw or transfer. If several children need allowances, select and configure each child profile separately.
How payment is handled
Child purchases are charged to the family manager’s wallet and remain within the child’s assigned monthly limit. The child account does not independently supply a payment method for these purchases. Family-management guidance also states that child members cannot add payment methods or wallet funds; those wallet and payment tasks belong to the family manager.
Because the wallet belongs to the family manager, a child limit does not create a separate wallet for each child. Keep that distinction in mind when reviewing a transaction: the purchase may appear against the family manager’s funds even though the child account’s limit determined whether the purchase was permitted.
If another adult manages the child account
A parent or guardian can change a child’s settings only within the permissions assigned to that role. If the Monthly Spending Limit option is unavailable or cannot be saved, sign in with the family manager account or have the family manager review the adult’s family permissions.

Require a password for purchases on an adult account
For an adult PlayStation Store account, the relevant setting is not in Family Management. It is in the account’s payment and purchase settings and asks for the account sign-in password whenever that adult account makes a purchase.
PS5 menu path
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Select Account.
- Open Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
After activation, the password screen appears when the adult account makes a PlayStation Store purchase. Use the password for that PlayStation account, not a separate console unlock code. If you share the PS5 with other people, do not save or disclose that password on a profile that should not be able to authorize adult-account purchases.
Device coverage
Sony describes this as an account-level purchase setting. It applies across devices used to access the same PlayStation Store account, rather than only the PS5 on which you enabled it. That makes it useful when the account is also used on another PlayStation device. The setting follows the adult account, so check that you are signed into the same account when testing it elsewhere.
What it does not protect
Require Password at Checkout does not apply to child accounts. It also does not protect wallet top-ups. Someone who can use the adult account may still be able to add funds without encountering the checkout-password prompt, so wallet funding needs separate account and passcode protection.
Do not treat the checkout prompt as a complete spending limit. It confirms identity at purchase time, but it does not establish a monthly ceiling and it cannot substitute for a child account. For a child, use Family Management; for an adult, use the password requirement together with careful access to the adult profile and wallet.
Stop a child from buying games with an adult account
The most important structural step is to create and use a separate child account. Sony recommends this instead of letting a child use an adult account. A child using an adult account receives that account’s access, and the child-account parental controls do not apply.
Use the child account for play and purchases
- Sign the child into the child account rather than the family manager’s adult account.
- Set the child’s Monthly Spending Limit before allowing PlayStation Store purchases.
- Keep the adult account’s sign-in password private.
- Use the adult account for family-management tasks, payment methods and wallet funding.
- Log out after using an account on a shared console when another person could access it.
- Check the active profile before opening the Store, especially after another household member has used the PS5.
This arrangement keeps the spending cap attached to the account that is actually making the child’s purchases. Leaving the child on an adult profile defeats that separation, even if Require Password at Checkout is enabled on the adult account, because that checkout control is not a child-account control.

- Sign in to Account Management.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child account.
- Choose Edit.
- Adjust Monthly Spending Limit and save.
The web route changes the same child-account setting as the PS5 menu. You still need to use the family manager account or an authorized parent/guardian account with sufficient permissions. The web page does not create a second limit; it edits the existing limit attached to that child.
PlayStation Family app
The PlayStation Family app can manage a child’s spending limit and other parental controls from a mobile device. This is useful when you need to change the allowance away from the console, but the setting remains associated with the child account and family structure rather than with a particular phone. After changing it in the app, confirm that you selected the intended child and that the new value was saved.
Set up a sensible family arrangement
For a complete spending block
- Use a dedicated child account.
- Leave Monthly Spending Limit at the default value of 0.
- Do not let the child use the adult account for PlayStation Store activity.
- Keep payment methods and wallet funding under the family manager’s control.
- Review which profile is active before allowing Store access.
This configuration permits the child to use the console while preventing permitted spending through the child account. If a purchase is needed later, the family manager can change the limit or complete the purchase using the appropriate account.
For a fixed monthly allowance
- Choose the child account in Family Management.
- Set the monthly amount you are prepared to authorize.
- Explain that the amount is a cap for that child account’s PlayStation Store purchases, not a balance that can be transferred to another account.
- Review the setting from the PS5, Account Management or the PlayStation Family app when you need to change it.
- Tell the child that purchases draw from the family manager’s wallet even though the child limit controls the permitted amount.
The family manager’s wallet remains the funding source for child purchases, while the child-account setting determines how much may be spent under the family rule. Sony does not publish a specific reset time in the support guidance, so avoid promising that an unused amount will roll over or that a mid-month change will be prorated.
For an adult who shares the console
- Sign in to the adult account.
- Enable Require Password at Checkout through Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings.
- Keep the account password private and use the console’s available sign-out or passcode features when others use the PS5.
- Remember that wallet top-ups are outside the checkout-password setting.
- Use a separate child account for anyone who should be subject to family spending controls.
These settings are built into the accounts and management surfaces; no hardware accessory or printed manual is required to create the limit or checkout prompt. A PlayStation Store gift card only adds funds to a wallet and does not configure either control.
Verify that the controls are working
After saving a setting, use this account-focused checklist:
- Confirm the child’s profile name in Family Management.
- Reopen Monthly Spending Limit and verify that the saved value is displayed.
- Check that the child is signing into the child profile, not an adult profile.
- For an adult account, return to Purchase Settings and verify that Require Password at Checkout remains on.
- Remember that the adult password prompt should be tested with the same PlayStation Store account on any other device where it is used.
- Review wallet access separately because a checkout prompt does not cover top-ups.
A failed test often reflects an account mismatch rather than a broken control. Write down which profile was active when you tested, then compare it with the profile whose setting you changed.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Monthly Spending Limit option is missing
Check that you selected a child account under Family Management. The monthly limit is a child-account control and will not appear as the adult purchase-confirmation setting. If you are signed in as a parent or guardian, your role may not include permission to change this setting; the family manager can make the change or adjust your permissions.

The child can still shop after a limit was set
Confirm that the child is using the intended child account, not an adult account. Parental controls do not apply when a child uses an adult account. Also verify that the limit was saved on the correct child profile rather than another family member’s profile. Check the family manager’s wallet separately; the child limit governs the child account’s permitted purchases, not unrelated purchases made from an adult profile.
The adult account still allows wallet funding
This is expected behavior. Require Password at Checkout covers purchases, not wallet top-ups. Protect wallet funding separately with the account’s password, console sign-out and passcode practices, and restrict access to the adult profile.
The password prompt does not appear for a child
Require Password at Checkout is not a child-account feature. Use Monthly Spending Limit under Family Management for the child and keep the child out of the adult account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA parent or guardian cannot change the amount
Only the family manager or a parent/guardian with the necessary assigned permissions can change family settings. Ask the family manager to perform the change or review the role’s permissions.
The setting changed on one PS5 but not another device
Monthly Spending Limit is attached to the child account and can also be managed online or in the PlayStation Family app. Require Password at Checkout is attached to the adult PlayStation Store account and applies across devices using that account. Make sure you are checking the same account in both cases.
The family has more than one child
Open each child profile individually and set its limit. A value saved for one child does not automatically configure another child, and an allowance is not a shared family balance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security practices that complement the controls
- Create one separate child account per child instead of sharing an adult account.
- Do not disclose the adult account’s sign-in password to a child who should not make adult-account purchases.
- Log out after using an account on a shared console.
- Use password and passcode tools to reduce unauthorized access.
- Keep payment methods and wallet funding under the family manager’s control.
- When reviewing a purchase problem, first identify which account made the purchase; the child limit cannot govern purchases made from an adult account.
- Check the active profile before approving Store activity, particularly when multiple users share one PS5.
Sony’s store and cancellation guidance specifically points to separate child accounts, parental controls, passwords and passcodes as ways to limit or prevent unauthorized purchases. These measures work together: the child limit governs the child account’s permitted amount, while password and access controls protect the adult account and its wallet.
Quick reference
| If you want to… | Use this setting | Path or surface |
|---|---|---|
| Set how much a child may spend | Monthly Spending Limit | PS5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit |
| Block child-account spending by default | Leave the limit at 0 | Child account in Family Management |
| Require confirmation for an adult purchase | Require Password at Checkout | Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings |
| Change a child limit away from the console | Monthly Spending Limit | Account Management > Family Management > child > Edit, or the PlayStation Family app |
| Protect wallet funding | Account password, sign-out and passcode practices | Require Password at Checkout does not cover wallet top-ups |
What to remember
Use the child-account Monthly Spending Limit when you need a defined PlayStation Store allowance or a complete block at 0. Use Require Password at Checkout for adult-account purchase confirmation, but do not treat it as protection for child accounts or wallet funding. The reliable foundation is a separate child account, family-manager control of the wallet, and careful protection of the adult account.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set a spending limit on PS5?
Sign in as the family manager or an authorized parent/guardian, then open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, choose Parental Controls, and open Monthly Spending Limit. Enter the amount and save it.
How do I stop my child buying games on PlayStation?
Give the child a separate child account and leave its Monthly Spending Limit at 0, or set the allowance you approve. Do not let the child use an adult account, because child-account controls do not apply there.
How do I require a password for PS5 purchases?
On the adult account, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings, then turn on Require Password at Checkout. The account sign-in password is requested for purchases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where is Monthly Spending Limit on PS5?
It is under Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > the child account > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. You must select a child account, not the adult account.
Can I set a PlayStation Store limit from my phone?
Yes. Sony’s PlayStation Family app can manage a child’s spending limit and other parental controls from a mobile device. You can also use Account Management on the web through Family Management, the child account and Edit.
Does Require Password at Checkout stop child purchases?
No. It is an adult-account purchase confirmation and does not apply to child accounts. Use Monthly Spending Limit in Family Management and keep the child on the separate child profile.
Does the checkout password protect wallet top-ups?
No. Require Password at Checkout covers purchases, not wallet funding. Protect the adult profile and wallet separately with the account password, sign-out and passcode practices.
Who can change a child’s spending limit?
The family manager can change it. A parent or guardian can do so only if that role has been given the necessary family-management permissions.
What is the default spending limit for a new child account?
Sony sets a new child account’s monthly spending limit to 0. The family manager can raise it when an allowance is appropriate.
Will the child’s unused limit transfer to another child or become wallet money?
No. The setting is a cap attached to that child account, while purchases use the family manager’s wallet. It is not a transferable balance.
The Bottom Line
For children, use a separate child account and set Monthly Spending Limit in Family Management; new child accounts start at 0. For adults, turn on Require Password at Checkout, but remember that it covers neither child accounts nor wallet top-ups. Keep the adult account, wallet and password under family-manager control.
