For precision platformers on Nintendo Switch, start by calibrating each stick, use the D-pad for left and right, and consider a Pro Controller with wired communication enabled when docked. Switch has no system-wide stick deadzone or sensitivity slider, so calibration recenters a stick but cannot hide or repair drift. We Are Eva is announced for Switch on 4 November 2026 at $4.99 on the Nintendo eShop; as of 2 November, its Switch-specific controls and settings have not been documented.
What controller setup works best for a precision platformer?
A reliable starting setup is a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, D-pad movement, vibration off for difficult sections, and a saved button layout that lets you jump and trigger other actions without taking your thumb off movement. A calibrated Joy-Con pair can also work. The important first step is not buying a particular pad or hunting for a deadzone number: it is checking that the controller registers no movement when the stick is at rest.

These recommendations address the Switch’s system settings and controller behavior, not a confirmed We Are Eva configuration. The Switch version is announced for 4 November 2026, but as of 2 November its in-game deadzone, sensitivity, rumble behavior, gyro use, and default button map have not been published. Once the game is available, check its pause menu for options the console itself does not provide.
Why do small controller errors matter in We Are Eva?
We Are Eva is a 2D precision platformer from Ukrainian studio Totally Normal Creature, first released in 2023. The Switch announcement describes more than 100 dynamic levels across nine distinct worlds. A 2023 FinalBoss review counted 116 levels, including five tutorials, and estimated two to six hours to finish depending on playstyle. The announced Switch eShop price is $4.99.

Eva moves through overlapping colored dimensions, closing dimensional gaps. The documented core actions are moving, jumping and double-jumping, grabbing walls, and switching dimensions with a dedicated button. The worlds alter how those actions feel: green is the basic double-jump and wall-grab environment; purple reverses left and right; yellow is slippery; blue feels floaty or underwater; red restricts visibility; and light green imposes a time limit. Levels also rearrange after death.
That mix makes unwanted stick input more consequential than it is in a forgiving game. A tiny unintended directional input can alter a landing; a missed jump or late dimension switch can end an attempt. GameGrin’s 2023 PC review called it a precision platformer and compared its tight mechanics with Celeste and Super Meat Boy. FinalBoss likewise described switching dimensions mid-air while jumping, grabbing ledges, and avoiding enemies. Those are PC-era descriptions, not a verified Switch control map.
What is known about the Switch controls?
PC coverage documents keyboard controls including C for jump and double-jump and Z for wall-grab, and describes the game as controller-friendly. Those keyboard bindings do not establish the Switch face-button layout. The Switch announcement and available coverage do not yet specify which Switch button triggers each action, whether the game offers remapping, or whether it has analog tuning. Do not assume a PC key map translates directly to a Switch button.
Does Nintendo Switch have deadzone or stick-sensitivity settings?
No. Nintendo Switch system settings do not include a controller deadzone or stick-sensitivity slider. Nintendo’s calibration tool can reset the stick’s understood center point; it does not create a deadzone, change sensitivity, or fix worn hardware. Very few Switch games provide their own deadzone controls, and no such option has been confirmed for We Are Eva’s Switch version.
An inner deadzone is the small area around the stick’s resting point that a game ignores. Raising it can suppress minor unwanted input, but it also means the game ignores more of the stick’s initial travel. An outer deadzone determines how far the stick must move before the game treats it as fully deflected. A response curve controls how input scales after that. These are useful concepts on platforms or in games that expose the controls, but they are not Switch-wide settings.
General controller-tuning guides suggest starting around 5 to 8 percent for an adjustable inner deadzone, then lowering it until drift appears; other guides recommend 5 to 10 percent as a general target, or 3 to 5 percent for a clean pad. Those figures are general advice for games that actually offer a slider—not Nintendo Switch settings and not tested or published We Are Eva values. Defaults of 15 to 20, also cited in general guidance, can discard a noticeable amount of stick travel when precision is the goal.

If a future We Are Eva menu or update does add an inner-deadzone setting, use the smallest value that gives your particular controller a stable rest with no unintended movement. Individual controllers can differ, even within the same model. If the game does not expose a slider, there is no system-level percentage to enter instead.
How do I calibrate Switch Joy-Con or Pro Controller sticks?
Calibrate each stick separately before adjusting your play style. Nintendo’s calibration process is for setting the controller’s center and travel response; pair it with a rest-and-range check to see whether the problem is a bad center reading or persistent hardware drift.
- Update the console first. Make sure the Switch has the latest system update. Connect or pair the controller you want to check.
- Open the calibration menu. From the HOME Menu, go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks.
- Choose a stick and inspect it at rest. Watch the on-screen marker with your thumb off the stick. Then click the stick if prompted to begin calibration.
- Follow the on-screen directions. Nintendo’s instructions include fully tilting the stick in a direction for a few seconds and following the prompts. Move through the marked directions and, where prompted, rotate around the outer edge.
- Repeat for the other stick. Calibrate the left and right Joy-Con sticks independently. Check both Pro Controller sticks if either has felt inaccurate.
- Test after calibration. With the controller untouched, check whether the marker stays centered. Move the stick through a full circle and toward its edges to check for smooth movement and full range.
If the updated calibration does not appear immediately, put the console to sleep and wake it, or press the controller’s SYNC Button once and then press another button to power it on again. Nintendo’s instructions specify the menu path and calibration action; the rest test is a practical way to determine whether the issue remains.
When does a rest test point to drift?
Alex Olney of Nintendo Life describes drift as a character moving when the player is not touching the stick, or aiming that is slow or limited in one or more directions. A tester-based guide from Gamepad Tester UK gives a more numerical reference: healthy analog sticks at rest read within ±0.020, while consistent resting values above ±0.050 indicate drift. Those are tester readings, not values shown in the Switch calibration menu.

A marker that continues to move untouched after recalibration, fails to return to center, or cannot reach the edge suggests a continuing controller problem rather than a missing Switch deadzone setting. Calibration can correct a misread center; it cannot restore a worn potentiometer.
Should I use the D-pad or analog stick for 2D platforming?
Use the D-pad as the default for left-right movement when a game supports it and the directional inputs are digital. It gives distinct cardinal directions and has no analog stick resting position that can produce a continuous movement command. An analog stick remains a reasonable choice if it is calibrated, stays centered when untouched, and feels more controllable to you.

A stick is a rate-style input: the game interprets how far it is deflected as a movement rate, rather than treating its position like a fixed destination. That can make tiny unwanted resting input matter. Since Switch offers no system-wide inner-deadzone adjustment, you cannot compensate there for a stick that drifts slightly at rest.
We Are Eva’s published PC key map uses digital keys for actions such as jump and wall-grab, and purple-world controls invert left and right. That supports thinking in discrete directional inputs, but it does not confirm which Switch input the game will accept for movement. Check the Switch version’s controls after launch; if its control options permit D-pad movement, it is the sensible precision starting point.
A single sideways Joy-Con is a poor choice for demanding platforming if its reduced button set or rotated layout makes actions awkward. Prefer a Joy-Con pair in the grip, handheld controls, or a Pro Controller. If using Joy-Con, the left unit’s D-pad directions can be useful for digital movement when playing with the pair in a dual-controller grip.
Is a Pro Controller better than Joy-Con for precision platformers?
A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the strongest default hardware recommendation for long or demanding platforming sessions: it has a conventional full-pad layout, a larger and more ergonomic body, and a USB-C wired option. Joy-Con remain a usable choice when calibrated, particularly as a pair. Neither controller is immune to drift, so check the actual unit rather than assuming its model guarantees perfect input.
| Factor | Joy-Con | Nintendo Switch Pro Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Layout and feel | Compact, separable controls; a single sideways Joy-Con has fewer buttons and a rotated layout. | Conventional full-controller layout and larger, more ergonomic body, according to hardwaretest.org. |
| Stick considerations | Calibrate each stick; treat analog movement as the higher-drift path in the supplied hardware guidance. | Hardwaretest.org describes its analog sticks as better than Joy-Con sticks, but drift remains possible. |
| Battery life | About 20 hours, according to hardwaretest.org (2026). | About 40 hours, according to hardwaretest.org (2026). |
| Wired play | No equivalent Pro Controller Wired Communication setup is established for Joy-Con in the supplied guidance. | Can connect by USB-C; enable Pro Controller Wired Communication for wired use. |
| Rumble and other features | Vibration settings are available through the console. | Nintendo lists motion controls, HD rumble, and built-in amiibo functionality. |
The comparison is about comfort and setup options, not a claim that a Pro Controller makes every player more accurate. A familiar Joy-Con grip with no drift can be better than an unfamiliar pad. For the Pro Controller’s original model, Gear Geeks Gaming’s October 2026 PC measurements reported 66 Hz over Bluetooth and 74 Hz over cable. Those figures were measured on PC, not the Switch, and should not be read as Nintendo Switch polling rates.
How do I enable wired communication for a Pro Controller?
When playing docked with a Pro Controller connected by USB-C, enable the Switch’s Pro Controller Wired Communication setting. The option is listed under Controllers and Sensors and is the documented Switch-side latency setting for a Pro Controller.

- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
- Turn on Pro Controller Wired Communication.
- Play with the controller connected by cable. If you disconnect it or return to wireless play, remember that the wired connection is no longer in effect.
Wired communication is a practical choice when the console is docked and the cable is convenient. The PC polling measurements cited above show a modest difference between cable and Bluetooth under those PC conditions, but they do not quantify Switch-console latency or prove how much a player will notice in a particular game.
How should I remap Switch buttons for platforming?
Use Switch’s system-wide mapping feature to create a platformer preset if the game’s own controls are awkward. The feature arrived in system update 10.0.0 and supports up to five saved layouts for each supported controller type. Since We Are Eva’s exact Switch map is not yet known, build the preset after checking the game’s control screen, rather than assigning buttons against an assumed layout.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping.
- Select the supported controller you want to change: Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. The built-in controls on Nintendo Switch Lite can also be remapped.
- Choose a layout to edit. Keep left and right on the D-pad or left stick according to your preference and the game’s supported controls.
- Place jump on a button you can press reliably while steering. If the bottom B face button suits your grip, it is a reasonable starting point; otherwise consider a shoulder button.
- Put dimension-switch on a different readily reachable button, such as a shoulder or a face button that is not jump. The game’s documented actions can overlap in mid-air, so avoid a layout that forces an awkward thumb move between them.
- Save the layout as a platformer preset in one of the available slots, then test it in a safe area of the game.
The system can reassign face buttons, L/R and ZL/ZR, stick clicks, and left/right stick roles; it can also disable a button. POWER, volume, HOME, and SYNC buttons cannot be remapped. Joy-Con A/B/X/Y mapping applies when the pair is held as a dual-controller grip, vertically. Avoid putting a frequently repeated action on a stick click if pressing it hard is uncomfortable or risks unwanted stick movement.
Presets are saved on the console, not on the controller. A custom mapping will not travel with the pad to another Switch. If movement or actions feel wrong after changing controllers or returning to a game, check whether the intended mapping preset is still active before concluding that the game’s settings changed.

Should I turn off vibration for precise jumps?
Turn vibration off while learning difficult jumps or when rumble distracts you from timing; turn it back on if you prefer the feedback or the game uses it meaningfully. The Switch has a vibration setting under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors. We Are Eva’s Switch rumble behavior has not been documented, so there is no confirmed gameplay cue that requires vibration to stay on.
The Pro Controller includes HD rumble, according to Nintendo’s official product information. General controller setup advice recommends disabling vibration for precision work, partly to reduce distraction and conserve battery. Treat that as a preference, not a universal performance improvement: if vibration helps you read an event or enjoy the game, keep it enabled unless the Switch port gives a reason to change it.

How do I calibrate motion controls?
Motion calibration is a general controller-maintenance option, not a confirmed We Are Eva mechanic. The available PC coverage does not describe gyro aiming or motion input for the game, and the Switch port’s gyro support has not been published.
- Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold − or + on the controller you want to calibrate, remove any wrist strap, and place the controller on a flat, stable surface with the stick pointing up.
- For Joy-Con, detach the controller from the console before calibrating motion.
Nintendo Support’s guidance for in-game motion calibration is different: without closing the game, place the device on a stable flat surface and wait at least five seconds for automatic calibration. Nintendo notes there is no notification that this process has started or completed. Use that method only if a game calls for motion calibration; it is not a substitute for stick calibration.
What should I do if a Joy-Con or Pro Controller still drifts?
Recalibrate once, then check the resting input again. If the marker still moves without touching the stick, the system has not repaired the underlying hardware. A deadzone would only mask small drift where a game offers one, and Switch has no system-level setting for that workaround.
- Confirm the symptom. Set the controller down and observe the stick marker without touching it. If you use an external tester, Gamepad Tester UK’s reference is within ±0.020 at rest for a healthy stick; consistent readings above ±0.050 indicate drift.
- Recalibrate. Use System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks and repeat the rest check.
- Update the controller. In System Settings > Controllers and Sensors, use Update Controllers before attributing inaccurate behavior to a game setting.
- Consider debris only as a cautious next step. Hardwaretest.org recommends compressed air under the stick; follow product safety directions and avoid forcing debris further into the controller.
- Seek repair if the fault persists. Nintendo repair is the safer route for persistent drift. Hardwaretest.org reports free Joy-Con repair has been offered in most regions, including for some out-of-warranty repairs; availability and terms vary by region and can change.
Nintendo Life discusses contact cleaner for Pro Controller internals but warns that this involves opening the controller. Its analog sticks are soldered, so replacing one is not a simple plug-in repair. Do not open the shell or attempt a soldered-stick transplant unless you accept the risk of damaging the controller; a repair service is the more appropriate choice for most players.
What should I check when We Are Eva launches on Switch?
The announced launch date is 4 November 2026. The Switch-specific settings are not established in the available coverage dated 29 October, so check the game’s pause menu and controller options after it becomes available rather than importing settings from PC guides.
- Look for separate movement, button-remapping, deadzone, sensitivity, or rumble options; their presence is not confirmed.
- Check whether the game accepts D-pad movement and whether the on-screen control guide identifies a dedicated dimension-switch button.
- Try the default bindings in a low-risk area before changing the console-wide preset, so you know which actions are difficult to reach.
- If an in-game deadzone slider exists, tune it against your specific controller’s resting behavior instead of copying a percentage intended for another game or platform.
- If no such option exists, rely on calibration, a drift-free controller, digital movement where supported, and a layout that keeps essential actions accessible.
That approach keeps the distinction clear: console settings and hardware checks are available now, while the Switch port’s own behavior must be verified in the released game.

Will a We Are Eva button layout transfer from my Switch to another console?
No. Nintendo’s mapping presets are stored on the Switch console, not on the controller, so a controller paired with a different Switch will not bring that custom layout with it.
Can I remap the HOME or SYNC button for a platformer?
No. Nintendo excludes the POWER, volume, HOME, and SYNC buttons from remapping; other buttons can be reassigned on supported controllers.
Does Nintendo Switch Lite support button remapping?
Yes. Nintendo Support says the mapping of the Switch Lite’s built-in controls can be changed, as well as supported Joy-Con and Pro Controller layouts.
