Start by checking your exact wheel model against the correct Xbox or PC compatibility list, then let Forza Motorsport load its device profile before changing anything. Supported wheels receive pre-mapped primary controls and a force-feedback calibration from Turn 10; PC players can also use DirectInput for broader hardware support and manual remapping. Once steering, pedals and buttons work, change one force-feedback control at a time while driving the same car on the same track.
Does your racing wheel work with Forza Motorsport?
Compatibility is determined by the exact wheel model and platform, not just the manufacturer. An Xbox-compatible version is not automatically interchangeable with a similarly named PC device. The official Forza Community wheel-support list separates console and PC hardware, and it was published in August 2023, so check the current listing and the wheel maker’s support page for newer releases, firmware changes or regional variants.

Xbox Series X|S compatibility
For Xbox, the supported list includes examples such as the Logitech G920 and G923, numerous Fanatec and Thrustmaster models, and the Xbox variants of newer wheels. A model name with an “X” suffix generally identifies an Xbox version, but verify the complete model number before buying or connecting it. A PC-only wheel may power on without being usable in the Xbox version of the game.

PC support includes Logitech G29, G920 and G923 models, additional older devices, many Fanatec and Thrustmaster wheels, and Moza R9 variants in the 2023 list. Forza Motorsport on PC also accepts DirectInput devices. DirectInput expands the range of hardware and permits manual assignment of axes and buttons, but it does not guarantee that every wheel will expose identical pedals, shifters or force-feedback behavior. You may need to map controls yourself and test each axis.

What the official profile does
Xbox Wire’s Designed for Xbox guide, published October 11, 2023, says supported wheels receive an automatic profile with primary buttons pre-mapped and force feedback calibrated by Turn 10. Treat that profile as a starting point rather than a promise that every driver will prefer the same weight, damping or steering response. The same article quotes Aaron Brooks, Lead Physics Designer for Forza Motorsport: “We have physically tested every wheel in our lab, with the team carefully tuning each one to amplify the experience of the new Forza Motorsport.” That describes the launch-era development process; it is not a guarantee covering hardware added later.
Mount and connect the hardware before opening the game
A stable mount is part of a usable wheel setup. A base that moves on the desk changes your steering input and can make force feedback feel inconsistent even when the software is correctly configured.
Secure the wheel base
- Use the manufacturer’s clamp, bolts or mounting plate exactly as specified for your model.
- Place the base on a rigid desk, table or cockpit surface that does not flex under steering load.
- Position the pedals so they cannot slide when you brake hard. A wall, carpeted stop or cockpit pedal plate can help, provided it does not obstruct your feet.
- Check that the wheel can rotate through its full range without hitting a monitor, desk edge or cable.
Xbox Wire specifically describes clamp-based attachment systems for the Thrustmaster T128X and T248X. Do not assume that mounting method, hole spacing or desk thickness applies to another model. Confirm the dimensions and included hardware for the exact wheel before purchasing a stand or cockpit.

- Attach the pedals and any shifter or handbrake to the wheel base as directed by the manufacturer.
- Connect the power supply, if your wheel uses one, and connect the wheel to the console or PC using the supplied data cable.
- Allow the wheel to complete its startup calibration. Keep the rim clear so it can rotate safely.
- On PC, install the manufacturer’s current driver or control-panel software when the model requires it, then confirm that steering, throttle and brake axes move smoothly before launching the game.
- On Xbox, select the correct console mode on a multi-platform wheel before starting Forza Motorsport.
Do not hold the rim during its automatic calibration. If the wheel does not center, powers off, or reports an error, resolve that hardware or connection problem before tuning in-game force feedback.
Let Forza create its profile, then verify every control
Start Forza Motorsport with the wheel connected and wait for the game to identify it. On a supported device, the game should apply its profile, map primary buttons and initialize force feedback. Go to the game’s Settings, open Controls, select the wheel input device and review the assignments before entering a race.
Control checks to make
- Turn the rim left and right and confirm that the on-screen steering indicator reaches both directions without jumping.
- Press the accelerator gradually. The throttle axis should reach 100 percent only at the end of pedal travel.
- Press the brake and check that it returns completely to zero when released.
- Test clutch, handbrake, sequential paddles and shifter positions if your setup includes them.
- Press the assigned menu, pause, look-back and radio buttons so you can operate the game without reaching for a controller.
If an axis is reversed, has a dead zone, or reaches full input too early, correct that mapping in the controls screen or the wheel’s driver software before changing force-feedback strength. A force-feedback adjustment cannot repair an incorrectly assigned pedal.

When to use manual mapping on PC
DirectInput is useful when the game does not supply a dedicated profile for your wheel. Select the wheel as the active input device, assign steering and each pedal explicitly, and save the layout. Map one control at a time so an already assigned axis is not accidentally replaced. If a device presents combined pedals, use the wheel software’s separate-axis option only when the game and driver both support it; otherwise the brake and throttle may cancel each other.
Use a model-specific baseline, not a universal preset
Force feedback depends on the wheel’s motor, firmware, rotation range and mechanical design. A setting that feels controlled on a direct-drive wheel can feel weak on a gear-driven unit, while a value copied from another model can cause clipping, excessive vibration or oscillation. The only verified numeric profile in the available manufacturer material is for Logitech’s Pro Racing Wheel.
Logitech Pro Racing Wheel starting values
Logitech’s official “In-Game Settings for Pro Wheels” page lists the following starting profile for Forza Motorsport (2023):

These are Logitech’s published starting values for the Pro wheel, not an independently tested recommendation and not a universal Forza preset. Enter them only when using that wheel, then evaluate the result on your own system.
What FFB Filter changes
Logitech explains that higher filter values make the wheel feel smoother, while lower values preserve a more immediate, raw response. Increase filtering if surface detail feels harsh or noisy. Reduce it if the wheel feels delayed or overly softened. Filtering changes how the signal is presented; it does not increase the wheel’s physical torque.
What Dampener changes
Dampener tempers rapid wheel reactions. It can make a direct-drive wheel easier to control and may reduce oscillation when the rim starts moving left and right on a straight. More damping also slows the response and can hide smaller changes in the car’s forces. Logitech advises keeping hold of an active wheel and pausing before taking hold if it begins oscillating after being released.

What Angle changes
Angle sets the wheel’s overall steering-response range. The 1080-degree value in Logitech’s Pro profile is a rotation setting for that wheel, not evidence that every wheel or every car should use 1080 degrees. If the in-game steering feels too quick or too slow, confirm the wheel’s rotation range in both the driver and game rather than changing several force-feedback controls at once.
What TF Audio represents
TF Audio is included in Logitech’s Pro-wheel profile at 100. Keep this value tied to that model-specific profile; do not transfer it to a different brand without a source for that device. It is separate from the physical torque capability of the wheel.
Which force-feedback controls should you change?
Change the control that matches the symptom, and use small increments. Before each comparison, use the same car, track, weather and driving assists so the forces you feel are comparable.

If the wheel feels too weak
- Confirm that the wheel is receiving power and that the game has loaded its profile.
- Check the wheel’s driver or control-panel torque setting before altering detailed effects.
- Increase the relevant in-game strength slightly, then test several corners and a kerb.
- Stop increasing when the steering becomes constant or loses detail. Excessive force can make different impacts feel the same because the motor is saturating.
Do not infer that a wheel with a higher published torque rating will automatically improve lap times. Xbox Wire lists the Logitech Pro Racing Wheel at 11 Nm, which is a product specification, not a performance result.
If the wheel feels too heavy or tiring
Reduce overall force or the effect that is adding weight, then retest. A heavy rim can come from high torque, damping, tyre-load effects or a combination of them. Change one setting at a time so you know which adjustment produced relief. A lighter wheel is not necessarily less informative if it preserves the changes you need to catch understeer and oversteer.
If the wheel feels filtered or delayed
Lower the filter gradually, especially if you are using the Logitech Pro profile and the response feels smoothed. Check that the wheel’s rotation angle is not mismatched between the driver and game. A large mismatch can feel like sluggish steering even when force feedback is strong.

If the wheel oscillates on a straight
- Keep both hands on the rim while the wheel is active; do not try to grab it after releasing it at speed.
- Pause the game if the oscillation becomes uncontrolled.
- Reduce force or add a small amount of damping, then test again.
- Check that the base is firmly mounted and that the steering axis is centered.
Damping can calm oscillation, but too much makes the wheel slow and masks detail. Find the lowest amount that keeps the rim stable for your hardware.

If kerbs and road texture feel violent
Lower the effect responsible for sharp vibration or increase filtering in small steps. Recheck the mount, because a flexible desk can amplify noise and make a reasonable signal feel like a mechanical problem. If the wheel still behaves unpredictably, return to the device profile and test with default values instead of stacking more filters.
Thrustmaster-specific note
Thrustmaster’s official TMX support result gives one narrow Xbox recommendation: for the TMX, T128 or T248, reduce the in-game Wheel Damper Scale to improve force feedback. The support result does not establish a universal numeric value, so adjust it gradually and do not apply that instruction to unrelated models. It also does not replace the game’s profile or the model’s own driver settings.

For any option, confirm the exact Xbox or PC listing, included pedals and shifter controls, drive type, cable and power requirements, and the space needed for a secure mount. A compatible wheel that moves across the desk is less useful than a less powerful wheel that stays fixed.

- Record the baseline. Note the wheel model, platform, driver version, rotation angle and every force-feedback value currently in use.
- Verify the profile. Reconnect the wheel, let Forza identify it, and confirm that steering and pedals work before entering a race.
- Choose a repeatable test. Use one familiar car and track, with the same assists, camera and conditions for every comparison.
- Change one control. Move a filter, damping or strength value by a small amount; do not alter several controls simultaneously.
- Drive long enough to judge it. Check initial turn-in, mid-corner load, kerbs, braking and a straight-line section.
- Keep or revert. If the change improves the specific symptom without creating clipping, delay or instability, keep it and record the value. Otherwise restore the previous setting.
- Stop when stable. There is no requirement to use every adjustment range. A predictable wheel with clear information is preferable to a dramatic but unstable signal.
Common setup failures and fixes
Wheel is detected but steering does nothing
Confirm the correct platform mode, reconnect the data cable, and inspect the steering assignment in Settings > Controls. On PC, select the wheel’s DirectInput device and assign the steering axis manually if no profile loaded.
Pedals are combined or reversed
Check the manufacturer’s driver for separate-axis or combined-axis mode, then revisit the throttle and brake assignments in Forza. Calibrate each pedal through its full travel and ensure it returns to zero when released.
Buttons work but force feedback is absent
Verify the wheel’s power supply, profile selection and driver software. If the game recognizes only a generic input device, use the PC DirectInput path and map the controls, then test force feedback with conservative values. Do not keep driving if the wheel repeatedly disconnects or moves unpredictably.
The wheel recenters incorrectly
Let the wheel complete its startup calibration without touching it, then check centering in the driver and game. A loose clamp or flexing desk can also shift the apparent center; secure the base before recalibrating.
Settings became worse after copying another profile
Restore the wheel’s own game profile or default values. Numeric settings from a Logitech Pro wheel, for example, are not evidence for a G923, Thrustmaster or Fanatec device. Rebuild the setup with the one-change-at-a-time procedure.
What a good final setup looks like
The finished setup should identify the exact wheel and platform, use a stable mount, show correct steering and pedal travel, and deliver force feedback that is strong enough to communicate load without clipping or oscillating. Keep the manufacturer’s profile as your reference point, document any changes, and tune for a repeatable, controllable response rather than a supposedly universal number.
