You can set up WordPress on a Mac in two fundamentally different ways: install a private copy on your Mac for learning and testing, or install it on web hosting for a public site. Build locally when the site is still being planned, when you want to learn WordPress without making anything public, or when you need a safe copy for theme and plugin changes. Start on hosting when visitors, a domain name, email forms, search indexing or continuous availability matter immediately.
Use a local site for private development
A local installation runs on your Mac and is normally reachable only from that computer. It lets you experiment with layouts, menus, media and plugins without taking down a live site. Keeping this copy separate from production is particularly useful when a theme or plugin update needs checking before visitors see it.

Use hosted WordPress for a public website
A public site needs a web server as well as WordPress. A WordPress-specific host may include installation, backups, updates and developer tools, while a more general host can provide greater server-level control but may require more configuration. Either way, confirm the technical requirements before you pay for a plan.
Which Mac WordPress environment should you choose?
Choose the least-complex environment that matches your goal. Studio is usually the fastest first local install, Local is a good fit for a repeatable desktop workflow, and MAMP is best when you want to see and control the document root, database and ports yourself. Hosted WordPress is the correct destination for a site that must be public.

These options are not competing versions of WordPress. They are different places to run the same application. You can develop locally and later move the finished site to a host.
How do you install WordPress Studio on a Mac?
Studio is the shortest route to a new local WordPress site. Current Studio documentation lists macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer and separate installers for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
- Check your Mac under Apple menu > About This Mac. Confirm the macOS version and whether the processor is Apple silicon or Intel.
- Download the matching Studio installer and complete the macOS installation prompts.
- Open Studio and choose Add a site. Select the option to create a blank site for a new installation, or choose the import option if you already have a site or backup.
- Give the site a local name and wait for Studio to create the WordPress files and services.
- Open the built-in preview to view the front end, then open the WordPress dashboard to confirm that administration works.
- In the dashboard, set the site title and tagline, review the general settings, and choose a permalink structure before you create a large amount of content.
- Choose a theme under Appearance. Add only the plugins that provide functions the site actually needs.

How do you add a plugin or theme in Studio?
You can install a normal WordPress ZIP file through the dashboard, or place files directly in the local installation. Plugin files belong in wp-content/plugins and theme files in wp-content/themes. After copying files, activate the plugin or theme from the dashboard and check the site before adding another change.
When is Studio the wrong choice?
Studio is less suitable if your main goal is to practise every server-level detail or tune Apache and database ports manually. In that case, MAMP exposes more of the underlying stack. If you create many local sites and prefer a dedicated site-management interface, Local may be more convenient.

How do you create a WordPress site with Local on macOS?
Local bundles preferred PHP, MySQL and Nginx services and provides a guided site-creation flow, so you do not have to create a database by hand. Current installer documentation lists macOS Monterey (12) or newer, at least 4 GB of RAM and 1.5 GB of disk space.
- Check the Mac’s macOS version, memory and free storage before downloading the installer.
- Install Local and open it. Allow any macOS permissions it requests so it can run its bundled web and database services.
- Choose the control to create a new site. Enter a site name and accept the preferred environment unless you have a specific PHP, MySQL or Nginx requirement.
- Set the WordPress administrator username and password. Store these credentials in a password manager; they are separate from your Mac login.
- Let Local provision the site, then open the local site and its dashboard from the application.
- Set the site name, permalinks, timezone and other general settings before building pages.
- Install a theme and the smallest practical set of plugins. Stop and restart the local site from Local when you need to free resources or diagnose a service issue.
Local is a good choice for a developer or editor who expects to create several test sites. Its abstraction removes much of the file-placement and database work, but you still need to understand where the site is stored and how you will export it when it is ready for hosting.
How do you install WordPress manually with MAMP?
MAMP gives you direct control over a local Apache, MySQL and PHP stack. It is more demanding than an automated tool because the web root, database and ports must all line up, but the sequence is predictable.

- Install MAMP and start its Apache and MySQL services.
- Download the WordPress package and unzip it.
- In MAMP, confirm the document root. The documented Mac workflow uses
/Applications/MAMP/htdocs. - Move the unzipped WordPress folder and its files into that document root. If you keep the folder named
wordpress, the local address will normally include that folder name.
Create the database in phpMyAdmin
- Open MAMP WebStart and launch phpMyAdmin.
- Create a database named
wordpress. - Use the documented local installer values: username
root, passwordroot, database hostlocalhost, and table prefixwp_.
Run the browser installer
- Open
http://localhost:8888/wordpress/in a browser, or use the matching path if you chose a different folder name. - Enter the database name, username, password and host exactly as they were created in phpMyAdmin.
- Complete the site title and administrator account fields in the WordPress wizard.
- After installation, open the dashboard at
http://localhost:8888/wordpress/wp-admin/.
If the page does not load, check that MAMP’s services are running, that the files are inside the active document root rather than a similarly named folder, and that the URL includes the correct port. A database connection error usually means the database name, username, password or host does not match the values in phpMyAdmin.
What should you configure immediately after installing WordPress?
Do the basic configuration before adding content. Early settings affect every later page and link, so changing them after launch can create broken URLs or inconsistent branding.
Set identity and site-wide preferences
- Open Settings > General and set the site title, tagline, administration email, timezone and preferred date format.
- Open Settings > Permalinks and choose a readable structure. Save the setting even if you keep the default while developing.
- Review the site URL and WordPress URL. A local address must be changed carefully during migration; changing it prematurely can make the dashboard unreachable.
Create the essential pages
Plan the site structure before filling menus. Most sites need at least a home page, an About page and a Contact page. Add the pages that match the site’s purpose, such as a services page, portfolio, documentation area or privacy information, rather than installing plugins to compensate for an unclear structure.

Select a theme and limit plugins
Choose a theme under Appearance and check its layout at the widths your audience will use. Install only plugins that supply a defined function. Every additional plugin creates another update and compatibility responsibility, so remove inactive software you do not intend to use.

Plan credentials and working files
Use a separate, strong administrator password for each environment. Keep a record of the local site’s folder, database name and local URL. WordPress.org’s getting-started guidance also recommends planning your text editor, FTP client, browser, site structure, content and credentials before installation; those decisions make later maintenance less improvised.
How can you test a WordPress site on your Mac before launch?
Testing locally should reproduce the actions a visitor and an administrator will take, not just confirm that the home page opens.
- Open the home page, every main navigation item and every footer link.
- Create a draft and a published post or page, then check headings, images, captions and embedded media.
- Submit each form and confirm the expected success or error message. If email delivery cannot be tested locally, record that it still needs a production check.
- Resize the browser to narrow and wide layouts. Check menus, tables, buttons, image crops and text wrapping on mobile-sized screens.
- Sign out of the dashboard and verify that public visitors cannot see administrative controls.
- Update a copy of the theme or a plugin one at a time. If a change breaks the site, revert that change before continuing.
- Check the permalink structure after creating several pages and posts. A link that works only from the dashboard is not ready for launch.
Keep the local copy available after launch. It becomes a safe place to test updates and theme edits instead of making visitors the first people to encounter a compatibility problem.
What does a Mac WordPress site need before it can go online?
WordPress.org’s current requirements are PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. WordPress.org states that HTTPS is required for every install. Treat those as minimum compatibility checks, not a guarantee that every theme or plugin supports every server configuration.

Choose a domain and host
- Register a domain that matches the project and that you control.
- Choose a host whose advertised PHP and database versions meet or exceed the current WordPress requirements.
- Confirm how the host provides HTTPS, backups, updates, staging and database access. Managed WordPress plans can simplify those tasks; a more manually controlled plan may expose more server settings.
- Point the domain’s DNS records to the host according to the host’s instructions, then wait for the domain to resolve.
Install or migrate WordPress
If the host offers one-click WordPress installation, use it and create a new administrator account. For a local site you already built, migrate both the WordPress files and its database. Export the local database, copy the site’s files to the host, import the database, and update the site’s URLs to the production domain using the host’s documented method. Keep the local copy until the public version has passed every check.

Enable HTTPS and verify addresses
Activate the host’s certificate before treating the site as launched. Confirm that both the front-end address and the dashboard use the HTTPS version, and check that images, stylesheets and scripts are not still being requested from the local URL.
What should you check immediately after deployment?
A successful upload is not the same as a successful launch. Use a short production checklist while the local version remains available for rollback or comparison.
- Open the domain in a private browser window and test the home page, navigation and core pages.
- Check that the chosen permalink structure works for posts and pages.
- Submit contact and other forms, then confirm where the messages arrive.
- Upload or open several media files and inspect their dimensions and accessibility text.
- Review the site on a phone-sized viewport and a desktop-sized viewport.
- Confirm that HTTPS is active on every page and that no mixed-content warning appears.

What are the most common Mac setup problems and their fixes?
Studio or Local will not install
First compare the Mac’s macOS version with the tool’s current requirement. Studio requires macOS 13 or newer, while Local’s current installer documentation lists macOS 12 or newer. On an older Mac, upgrading macOS may be necessary, or you may need a different supported environment.
Local reports insufficient resources
Local lists 4 GB of RAM and 1.5 GB of disk space as minimum figures. Close unused applications, free disk space and stop local sites you are not using. If the Mac still falls short, reduce the number of simultaneously running sites rather than treating the minimum as a performance guarantee.
MAMP shows the wrong site
The browser is reading whichever folder is inside MAMP’s active document root. Recheck the document-root setting and the exact folder name, then include that folder in the local URL. Also confirm that Apache is running and that you are using MAMP’s port, commonly 8888 in the documented workflow.
WordPress cannot connect to the database
In MAMP, compare the installer fields with phpMyAdmin: database wordpress, username root, password root, host localhost. A typo, a stopped MySQL service or a database created under a different name will prevent installation.

A migrated site keeps redirecting to the local address
The database or configuration still contains the local site URL. Use the host’s documented migration procedure to replace the local address with the production domain, then clear caches and test in a private browser window. Do not change URLs on the local site before you have a recoverable copy.

No. The setup instructions require a supported Mac, a browser, WordPress and either a local server/database environment or web hosting. They do not require a particular keyboard, monitor, USB hub, external drive or other physical product. Extra storage can be convenient for backups, but it is not a WordPress installation prerequisite.

Can I keep developing locally after my WordPress site is live?
Yes. Keep the local installation as a staging copy, make and test changes there, and then move only the approved changes to production. For content created on the live site, plan the direction of the next database migration so you do not overwrite newer posts or form entries.
