How to Set Up and Register a PS5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1)

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1), first confirm that your console is a compatible PS5 Digital Edition/slim or PS5 Pro model, then install the drive while the console is shut down and cool. After reconnecting the console, connect it to the internet and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. That online pairing is the “registration” most owners mean; Sony does not describe a separate account-registration form for the drive.

Once pairing completes, verify the installation with a supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. If the console does not detect the drive or cannot read discs, update system software and work through the staged checks below before contacting PlayStation Repairs.

Check compatibility before you buy or install

The detachable drive is Sony PlayStation Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s product information identifies it for PS5 Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 model group (the slim design) and CFI-2100 group. Sony’s regional setup documentation also refers to the CFI-2000/7000 model group, so model-number verification is more reliable than judging by the console’s name or appearance alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find your PS5 model number

  1. Turn the console off normally and disconnect it if you need to move it.
  2. Look for the model number printed on the console. It begins with “CFI-”.
  3. Compare that number with the compatible groups listed for CFI-ZDD1 in Sony’s current product and setup documentation.

Do not force the drive onto a different PS5 revision. A drive that is physically similar is not proof of compatibility. If a retailer listing uses only a broad label such as “PS5 disc drive,” check that the actual unit is CFI-ZDD1 and that your console belongs to a supported CFI group before opening the package. This avoids a return problem and prevents you from testing a drive on hardware Sony does not list as compatible.

Keep the original parts

Set aside the circular cover removed from the console and the short horizontal feet. Sony says both are needed if you later remove the drive and return the console to its original configuration. The drive package supplies a circular replacement cover and longer horizontal feet for the installed configuration. Keep the parts together with the drive documentation; they are easy to misplace during a future move or resale.

Prepare a safe work area

  • Use a flat surface covered with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Have enough room to turn the console over without dropping it.
  • Keep the console away from heat while you work. Sony’s manual specifies an operating-temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F).
  • Before touching the drive or console connector, touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity.

Do not touch the drive terminal or the connector on the console. Avoid handling the console while it is hot. A soft cloth is for protecting the casing while the console is upside down; it does not replace the need to work on a stable, flat surface.

Install the CFI-ZDD1 drive physically

Complete the mechanical installation with the PS5 fully powered down, unplugged and cool. Rest the console on its soft cloth rather than on a hard surface that could scratch the casing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the PS5 off. Open the Control Center, choose Power, then select Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is completely off; Rest Mode is not sufficient.
  2. Disconnect every cable. Remove the AC power cord and HDMI and any other connected cables. Wait for the console to cool.
  3. Position the console. Place it bottom-up with the front of the console facing you. Remove the short horizontal feet.
  4. Remove the circular cover. Lift the circular cover slightly to release its clips, then take it off. Do not pry aggressively or bend the cover.
  5. Align the drive. Match the drive’s clips with the two marked holes on the console.
  6. Seat the drive. Press firmly and evenly until the drive clicks into place. If it does not seat, stop and check the alignment instead of forcing it.
  7. Install the new cover and feet. Fit the circular cover supplied with the drive, then attach the supplied long horizontal feet.
  8. Reconnect and power on. Reconnect AC, HDMI and the other cables, then turn on the PS5.

Do not operate the console with its cover removed. If you need to deal with a disc that is stuck inside, use Sony’s separate stuck-disc procedure and the specified No. 1 Phillips screwdriver; do not improvise with tools or repeatedly remove the drive.

What “clicks into place” should mean

The drive should sit flush against the console and its clips should engage the two marked holes. Resistance before alignment is a reason to stop, not to apply more force. Recheck the orientation, the marked holes and any remaining short feet. A cover that will not fit neatly can also indicate that the drive is not fully seated. Finish the physical work before trying to pair it; pairing cannot correct a mechanical misalignment.

Pair (register) the drive over the internet

Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” The pairing prompt that appears after installation is the registration step. It associates the detachable drive with that console through the console’s online setup process.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
  2. Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or connect an Ethernet cable for a wired connection.
  3. Return to the setup prompt and follow the on-screen instructions to pair the drive.
  4. Wait for the confirmation before inserting a disc or unplugging the console.

No separate Sony account form is described in the official setup instructions. If the console is offline, the initial pairing cannot complete even though the drive is installed correctly. Internet is therefore a setup requirement, not evidence that a disc must remain online every time it is played.

If the pairing prompt does not appear

Do not assume that the absence of a prompt proves the drive is dead. Confirm that the console is online, restart the PS5, and check for a system software update. Then power the console down, verify the drive’s seating and cover, restart and look for the setup prompt again. If the system still reports that no Blu-ray drive exists, record the exact message or code for the later support case rather than repeatedly opening the console.

Update system software before diagnosing a pairing failure

An out-of-date system can prevent setup or make a correctly installed drive appear faulty. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, install the latest available update, and restart the console. Restart the router as well, then retry the pairing prompt. A wired Ethernet connection can help distinguish an unstable wireless connection from a hardware problem.

Error code SU-101312-8, described by Sony as “Blu-ray Disc drive does not exist,” indicates a detection problem. Treat it as a connection, seating, software or compatibility issue first: confirm the model group, power the console down, check that the drive clicked fully into place, update software and retry the online pairing.

Verify that installation and pairing worked

Test a supported disc

Insert a known-good PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD after pairing. For a vertically oriented console, insert the disc with its labeled side facing left. A game disc should begin installing and the game should appear on the games home screen. Use a disc you know works in another compatible player when possible, so a scratched or otherwise damaged test disc does not create a false hardware diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the first disc is not recognized, eject it and test a second known-good disc. That single comparison helps separate a damaged or incompatible disc from a drive-detection problem. Insert and eject normally; do not push a disc farther into the slot or use a tool unless Sony’s stuck-disc procedure specifically calls for it.

Media the drive can read

Media Support and conditions
PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs Supported
Compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs Supported
Ultra HD Blu-ray movie discs Supported
BD-ROM Supported
BD-R and BD-RE Supported subject to the limitations in Sony’s instruction manual
DVD-ROM Supported
DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW Supported
AVCHD Supported
PS1, PS2 or PS3 software discs Not supported
Burned discs Not supported
Audio CDs Not supported

“Blu-ray” support does not mean every disc format is interchangeable. Use the table and the limitations in the manual when choosing a test disc; a PS1, PS2, PS3, burned or audio CD cannot validate a newly installed CFI-ZDD1. If one of those discs fails, that result is expected and does not by itself indicate a bad installation.

Troubleshoot a drive that is not detected

Work through these checks in order. Reinsert the disc after each step that changes the console, software or connection. Keeping the sequence matters: it separates a simple media problem from a pairing or hardware problem without unnecessary disassembly.

1. Confirm power, seating and model

  • Make sure the PS5 was fully shut down, not placed in Rest Mode, before you reseated anything.
  • Confirm that every cable is firmly connected and the console powers on normally.
  • Verify the CFI model against Sony’s supported CFI-2000/2100/slim or PS5 Pro groups.
  • With the console off and unplugged, check that the drive clips are aligned with the two marked holes and that the drive clicked into place.
  • Ensure the circular cover and long feet are fitted correctly; do not run the console with the cover removed.

2. Restore the software and network prerequisites

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet through Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
  2. Install the latest update at Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  3. Restart both the PS5 and network router.
  4. Retry the on-screen drive-pairing process.

3. Rule out the disc

  1. Eject the disc and inspect it for dirt or damage.
  2. Clean it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center toward the outer edge rather than in a circular motion.
  3. Try another supported PS5/PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD.

If multiple supported discs fail while the console still reports that the drive does not exist, the issue is unlikely to be a single dirty disc. Conversely, if only one disc fails and others work, concentrate on that disc’s condition or format before reopening the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Use Safe Mode only after the basic checks

Start the PS5 in Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Follow the on-screen instructions, then restart and test a supported disc again. Safe Mode is a software-maintenance step; it does not replace checking compatibility, cable connections or physical seating.

5. Stop and escalate when the problem persists

If the drive remains undetected, pairing repeatedly fails after a current system update, or several supported discs cannot be read, use PlayStation Repairs. Repeatedly removing and reinstalling the drive can damage clips or connectors and is not a substitute for service diagnosis. Include the console’s CFI model, the CFI-ZDD1 model, the exact error code and which supported discs you tested.

Common setup mistakes and their fixes

Using Rest Mode instead of shutting down

The installation procedure requires the power indicator to be off and all cables removed. Choose Power > Turn Off PS5; do not begin by lifting covers from Rest Mode.

Pairing without an internet connection

The drive can be physically attached while the console is offline, but initial pairing requires internet access. Connect the PS5 before concluding that a correctly seated drive is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing with an unsupported disc

PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs, burned discs and audio CDs will not play through this drive. Use a PS5/PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD for verification.

Installing on the wrong console revision

The CFI-ZDD1 is not a universal accessory for every PS5. Read the CFI model number and compare it with Sony’s supported groups before buying or attaching it.

Forgetting the original cover and short feet

Store these parts safely. Sony identifies them as necessary if the drive is removed later, while the installed drive uses its supplied circular cover and long horizontal feet.

Confusing an accessory requirement with a purchase requirement

You do not need a special HDMI cable, stand or cleaning kit merely to install and pair the drive. Those items can be relevant if an existing cable is damaged, a particular placement needs support, or a disc needs cleaning, but they are not part of the CFI-ZDD1 installation sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the practical options before buying

When comparing a CFI-ZDD1 listing with another drive or a bundled console, use the same criteria rather than relying on photographs. First check console compatibility: CFI-2000/2100 slim or PS5 Pro support is essential. Next check the media claim: Sony says this drive plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs, while the console and manual still define specific game and recordable-media limitations. Then confirm what is included, especially the circular cover and long horizontal feet, and account for the online pairing requirement.

Finally compare the complete cost, not only the drive price. Include any replacement HDMI cable only if your current one is missing or damaged, and consider warranty and return terms for the exact CFI-ZDD1 unit and your region. A stand, replacement cover or disc-cleaning cloth may be useful later, but none is required for the basic setup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What to budget and what you may need

The drive itself is the central purchase. Installation also requires the supplied cover and feet, a flat soft work surface and an internet connection for first-time pairing. A replacement HDMI cable is relevant only if your existing cable is missing or damaged; it is not a special requirement of the drive. A stand, replacement cover or disc-cleaning cloth may be useful in particular setups, but none is required to complete the installation described here.

Warranty and return terms depend on the seller and region, so check those terms for the exact CFI-ZDD1 unit before purchase. Sony does not publish a reliability rate, setup-success percentage, average installation time or sales statistic for this drive; those figures should not be used to predict your result.

Safe removal or future changes

If you later remove the drive, shut down the PS5 completely, disconnect every cable and let it cool before opening the console. Keep the drive terminal and console connector untouched, and reinstall the original circular cover and short feet if returning the console to its original configuration. Follow Sony’s removal instructions rather than operating the console with the cover off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PS5 consoles work with the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive?

Sony lists PS5 Pro and PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 slim and CFI-2100 groups; regional setup documentation also refers to the CFI-2000/7000 group. Check the CFI model number printed on your console rather than relying on the product name or appearance.

Is registration separate from pairing or from a Sony account?

For this accessory, registration normally means the initial online pairing between the drive and the PS5. Sony’s setup instructions describe that console pairing and do not describe a separate drive account-registration form.

Why does the PS5 Disc Drive need internet access?

Sony requires an internet connection to pair the detachable drive with the PS5 during setup. The requirement applies to the initial pairing step; it does not mean that every disc must remain online to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the pairing prompt never appears?

Confirm the PS5 is online, install the latest system software, restart the PS5 and router, then power down and recheck that the drive is fully clipped into place. If the console still reports that the Blu-ray drive does not exist, note the exact message or code and use Sony’s support process.

How do I know whether the problem is the disc or the drive?

Clean the disc from the center toward the edge with a soft cloth and test another known-good PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD. If several supported discs fail, the issue is less likely to be one dirty or damaged disc.

Can the drive play PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs, audio CDs or burned discs?

No. Sony’s troubleshooting information says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, and the manual states that PS1, PS2 and PS3 software discs are not supported.

What does error SU-101312-8 mean?

Sony describes SU-101312-8 as “Blu-ray Disc drive does not exist.” Check compatibility, cable connections, physical seating, system software and online pairing in that order. If the error persists, use PlayStation Repairs.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep the original cover and short feet?

Yes. Sony says they are needed if you later remove the drive and return the console to its original configuration. The installed drive uses the supplied circular cover and long horizontal feet.

When should I stop troubleshooting at home?

Escalate when the drive remains undetected, pairing repeatedly fails after an update and network check, or multiple supported discs cannot be read. Repeated removal can damage clips or connectors, so PlayStation Repairs is safer than continued disassembly.

The Bottom Line

The CFI-ZDD1 setup has two parts: a careful physical installation and an internet-required pairing step. Verify the console’s CFI model first, install only with the PS5 shut down and cool, update system software, then test a supported disc. Persistent detection or playback failures should go to PlayStation Repairs.
