Over the Hill supports gamepads on PC. The Steam listing identifies full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and the developers suggest using a controller. To get one working, connect only the controller you want to test, change the game’s Steam Input override, completely restart the game, and then enable the matching Steam controller-support option if necessary. There is no single Steam Input setting that is guaranteed for every model, so test both states in a controlled order.
What controller support Over the Hill provides
The game-specific Steam listing describes Full controller support, Xbox controller, and PlayStation controller, followed by the recommendation that players use a controller. That is the clearest compatibility information currently published for the PC version.

In practical terms, the game should be able to receive ordinary gamepad input through Steam. It does not mean that every inexpensive USB pad, unusual wireless mode, steering wheel, or custom driver will work identically. Detection and button labels can change with the controller’s operating mode, Steam Input state, connection method, firmware, and future game updates.

The setup below deliberately changes one variable at a time. That makes it possible to tell whether the game is reading the controller natively, through Steam Input, or not seeing the device at all.

Prepare a clean controller test
Do this before changing game settings. A clean test prevents a second pad or a wheel from becoming the device that Steam exposes to the game.
- Choose one controller and connect it by USB or pair it wirelessly before launching Over the Hill.
- Close controller-mapping utilities, virtual-gamepad tools, and manufacturer configuration software temporarily if they create additional virtual devices.
- Unplug or disconnect every other controller, joystick, arcade stick, steering wheel, and flight stick.
- If the controller has an input-mode switch, note whether it is set to Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or generic mode.
- Confirm that Steam itself shows the device before testing the game. If Steam cannot see it, Over the Hill cannot receive input through Steam.
For a wireless pad, test with a charged battery and keep the receiver or Bluetooth adapter close to the PC. If the device repeatedly disconnects at the operating-system level, fix that connection first; changing Steam Input cannot repair a dropped wireless link.
Set up the controller in Steam
Follow these steps in order. Restarting the game after each Steam Input change is essential because an already-running session can retain the previous input path.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Connect the controller you want to test and leave all other game-input devices disconnected.
- Open Steam > Library, locate Over the Hill, right-click it, and choose Properties.
- Open the game’s Controller section. Find the per-game Steam Input override.
- Record the current choice, then test the opposite state. If Steam Input is enabled, choose the option that disables it; if it is disabled, choose the option that enables it.
- Close the Properties window and fully exit Over the Hill. Do not merely return to the main menu or suspend the game.
- Relaunch Over the Hill with the same single controller still connected and test movement, menu navigation, and several face and shoulder buttons.
- If the controller is still missing or the layout is wrong, close the game again and open Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Select Show Advanced, then enable the support option that matches the controller type when Steam presents one. For example, use the Xbox-oriented option for an XInput/Xbox-mode pad and the PlayStation-oriented option for a PlayStation-mode pad.
- Launch the game again and test before reconnecting any other input device.
The two-state test is intentional. The available game-specific guidance does not establish a universal rule that Steam Input must always be on or always be off. One player’s Steam Community report says disabling Steam Input exposed native Xbox support, but that is a useful case to test rather than a guarantee for every controller, connection, or game patch.
Choose the right Steam Input state
| What you observe | Next setting to test | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Controller works with the initial setting | Keep that per-game override | That input path is currently compatible with your device. |
| No buttons or sticks respond | Switch Steam Input to the opposite state, then restart the game | The first input path was not reaching the game. |
| Menus respond but labels or actions are wrong | Try the opposite state and verify the controller’s hardware mode | A translation layer or an incorrect device profile may be active. |
| Only one of several connected devices works | Disconnect every other pad, wheel, and joystick and repeat the test | Device ordering or an unintended primary device was interfering. |
| Steam does not list the controller | Fix USB, Bluetooth, receiver, or driver detection before changing game settings | The problem is outside Over the Hill’s input path. |
After you find a working combination, leave that per-game override in place. Global Steam settings can remain unchanged for other games unless you deliberately want the same behavior everywhere.

Xbox and XInput controllers
Xbox controllers are explicitly named in the game’s Steam feature listing and are the most straightforward path to test. Connect the pad before starting the game, then run the per-game Steam Input test described above.
When native input works
If the game responds with Steam Input disabled, keep it disabled for Over the Hill and avoid adding an unnecessary translation layer. Native input commonly preserves the controller’s expected button order and reduces one possible source of duplicate bindings.

If the pad is visible in Steam but Over the Hill responds only when Steam Input is enabled, leave the override enabled. This can be useful for a controller that presents a non-XInput identity, a wireless connection that Steam translates, or a third-party pad running in a compatible Xbox mode.
Xbox-style third-party pads
Many third-party controllers have an Xbox/XInput switch. Set that mode before launching the game, disconnect other devices, and repeat the enable/disable test. If the pad has both XInput and DirectInput modes, do not switch modes while the game is running; change it, reconnect the device, and relaunch.
PlayStation controllers
PlayStation controllers are also named in the game-specific listing. Their behavior depends on whether the connection is USB or Bluetooth and whether Steam is translating the device into an Xbox-style layout.

Use the matching Steam support option
Open Steam > Settings > Controller > Show Advanced and enable the PlayStation-oriented support option when it is offered. Then close and restart Over the Hill. If the game behaves better with Steam Input disabled, use that per-game setting instead; the listing confirms support for PlayStation controllers but does not prescribe one translation mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInterpret button labels correctly
A PlayStation pad may display its physical symbols while the game or Steam overlay shows Xbox-style prompts. That does not necessarily indicate a failed connection. First check whether each button performs the expected action. If actions are swapped, test the other Steam Input state and verify that no custom layout is overriding the default.
Generic and third-party controllers
A generic pad can work, but its mode matters more than its marketing name. Before troubleshooting the game, identify whether the device is presenting itself as Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or a generic DirectInput controller.
- Xbox/XInput mode: test the Xbox-oriented Steam support path and then both per-game Steam Input states.
- PlayStation mode: test the PlayStation-oriented support option, with Steam Input enabled and disabled in separate restarts.
- Switch mode: enable the corresponding Steam support option when available, then perform the same restart cycle.
- Generic or DirectInput mode: Steam Input may be the practical translation path. If it produces incorrect bindings, change the controller’s hardware mode to XInput or PlayStation mode if the manufacturer provides that choice.
The available game-specific guidance does not publish a universal button map for every third-party model. Record the physical button you press and the action the game performs; that evidence is more useful than assuming a layout from the controller’s shape.
Fix a controller that is not detected
Steam cannot see the device
- Disconnect the controller, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub.
- For wireless use, remove and re-pair the controller or reseat its receiver, then confirm that the operating system reports a connected device.
- Close and reopen Steam so it enumerates the controller again.
- Only after Steam lists the device should you relaunch Over the Hill.
If the controller is absent from Steam after these checks, the likely causes are the cable, port, receiver, Bluetooth pairing, battery, hardware mode, or device driver. The game’s Steam Input override cannot make an invisible operating-system device appear.

Steam sees it, but the game does not
Use the per-game override test, fully exit the game, and relaunch with no other input devices connected. A running copy can retain the previous input path, so changing the setting while leaving the game open is not a valid test.
The game sees input from the wrong device
Disconnect wheels, sticks, spare pads, and virtual controllers. Restart Steam if necessary, then start Over the Hill with only the intended controller present. Reconnect other equipment after you have confirmed the gamepad works.
Only some buttons work
Check the controller’s hardware mode and try the matching Steam support option under Show Advanced. Then repeat the Steam Input toggle-and-restart process. Partial input often indicates that the game is receiving a profile for a different controller type rather than a total connection failure.
Buttons are swapped or prompts are unexpected
Test native input and Steam Input separately, with a complete restart between tests. Remove custom mappings temporarily. If the controller offers multiple modes, select one mode and keep it unchanged for the entire test; switching modes mid-session can leave Steam with stale device information.
Why disconnecting other devices matters
Steam and games can expose more than one HID or virtual game-input device at the same time. When a wheel, joystick, second pad, or remapping utility is connected, it becomes difficult to tell which device supplied a response. Over the Hill’s launch-focused input guidance prioritizes keyboard and mouse plus gamepads, so testing with one gamepad removes ambiguity without changing the rest of your setup.

Once the intended controller works, reconnect equipment one item at a time. Launching the game after each addition identifies the device or utility that causes a conflict. Keep the conflicting device disconnected while playing if no compatible profile is available.
Steering wheels and force feedback
Do not treat a steering wheel as an alternative gamepad setup. The game-specific guidance says keyboard and mouse and gamepads are the input methods prioritized for launch. Steering-wheel support and force feedback are not part of the launch build, and no confirmed future date is provided.
A wheel may appear in Steam or in the operating system yet still have no usable input path in Over the Hill. That is different from a failed Xbox or PlayStation controller setup. For a supported gamepad test, disconnect the wheel so it cannot become the active or conflicting device.

Steam’s support listing identifies Funselektor Labs Inc. as both developer and publisher, lists Windows and SteamOS + Linux, and gives an October 14, 2026 release date. Controller behavior can change with patches, Steam client changes, firmware, and operating-system updates, so a setting that worked on one release may require a fresh two-state test after a major update.
The listing’s full-controller-support label is the basis for expecting gamepad input; it is not a promise that every controller model or every future accessory will have a dedicated profile.
A quick decision path
- Is the controller visible in Steam? If no, repair the cable, wireless pairing, receiver, battery, mode, or driver first.
- Are other input devices connected? If yes, disconnect them and keep only the controller under test.
- Does the game respond with the current Steam Input state? If yes, keep that per-game override.
- If not, did you fully exit and relaunch after switching the state? If no, repeat the test correctly.
- Is the controller in the mode you think it is? Select Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or generic mode deliberately and enable the matching Steam support option when available.
- Does it still fail? Test another USB port or connection method, remove virtual-controller software, and retest with one device. If Steam still detects the pad but the game does not, the remaining variables are the controller’s mode, Steam’s profile, and the current game build.
What to report when seeking help
If you need support from the developer or Steam community, provide the details that distinguish one input path from another:
- Controller model and whether it was connected by USB, Bluetooth, or a wireless receiver.
- Hardware mode: Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or generic.
- Whether Steam listed the controller.
- The per-game Steam Input state that was tested.
- Which support option was enabled under Steam > Settings > Controller > Show Advanced.
- Whether every other controller, wheel, joystick, and virtual-device utility was disconnected.
- Whether the game was completely restarted after each setting change.
- Whether the failure is total detection loss, partial input, incorrect mapping, or unexpected button prompts.
Those facts allow someone to reproduce the same input path instead of guessing from the controller’s brand or appearance.
