How to Set Up Controls and Save States for Pokémon Heart & Soul (v2.0.6)

A complete v2.0.6 guide to patching Pokémon Heart & Soul, configuring emulator controls and RetroArch hotkeys, using normal saves, and understanding why save states do not transfer between setups.

To set up Pokémon Heart & Soul, patch the current v2.0.6 UPS file onto your own legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM, open the resulting GBA file in an emulator appropriate for your device, and configure controls in that emulator. Use the game’s normal save function for progress. Save states are separate emulator snapshots: they are useful for temporary checkpoints, but the official FAQ says they do not transfer between emulator setups and specifically tells players to use a normal save before soft-resetting for gift Pokémon.

What you need before configuring anything

Heart & Soul is distributed as a UPS patch rather than a pre-patched ROM. The current project guide identifies Pokémon Heart & Soul v2.0.6 as the current release and lists an update date of September 16, 2026. You need three separate pieces:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM.
  • The v2.0.6 UPS patch from the Heart & Soul project.
  • An emulator that supports Game Boy Advance software and, ideally, configurable controls and save management.

Keep an untouched copy of the original Emerald ROM. Apply the patch to a duplicate, not to your only copy. The patcher should create a new GBA file; that patched file is the one you open in the emulator. A clean original makes it possible to repeat the process if you choose the wrong file or need to apply a later release.

It also helps to create a dedicated folder before you begin. Keep the clean Emerald file, the UPS patch, the patched GBA, and your eventual save file in clearly named locations. Do not rename a save so that it points to a different game by accident. The emulator normally associates a save with the game filename, so consistent names reduce confusion when several Emerald-based projects are installed.

Patch Heart & Soul and open the correct file

1. Confirm the base ROM

Use the US-region Emerald Version ROM specified by the project guide. A different region, a modified dump, or an already patched file may not match the patch’s expected input. Do not overwrite your clean backup.

2. Apply the UPS patch

  1. Install or open a UPS-compatible patcher for your operating system.
  2. Select the Heart & Soul v2.0.6 UPS file as the patch.
  3. Select your legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM as the source file.
  4. Choose a new output filename and location, then run the patch.
  5. Confirm that the output is a GBA file and retain the original Emerald ROM separately.

The exact buttons in a patching utility differ, but the order is always patch, source ROM, and new output. If the utility reports that the source is invalid, stop rather than forcing the operation: check that you selected the unmodified Emerald (U) file and that the patch is the current UPS release.

3. Load the patched GBA

Open the newly created GBA file in your emulator. Do not open the UPS file itself; a UPS file contains patch data, not a playable game. If the emulator shows a blank screen or refuses to load the file, verify that you opened the patched output and that the patch completed without an error.

On the first launch, let the game reach its title screen before changing several settings at once. This gives you a known-good test that the patch and emulator are working. If you later replace the patched file with a new release, keep the old GBA and its normal save together until you have checked the update instructions.

Which emulator should you use?

The project’s current guide gives platform-specific recommendations. These are project recommendations, not a claim that every listed configuration has identical behavior. Choose the row matching your device:

Platform Emulators or cores named by the project guide Control setup implication
Windows, macOS, or another desktop PC mGBA Configure keyboard and/or a physical controller in the emulator’s input settings.
Android Pizza Boy, Lemuroid, or RetroArch with the mGBA core Choose on-screen buttons or bind a compatible physical controller.
iOS Delta, RetroArch with the mGBA core, or Ignited Configure touchscreen controls or a supported controller through the app.
Linux handheld devices RetroArch with the mGBA core Set handheld buttons and any separate emulator hotkeys.

The guide describes MyBoy as outdated and does not recommend it. If you use another emulator, confirm that it can run GBA games and that you understand where it stores cartridge saves and states; the Heart & Soul documentation does not promise identical behavior for every app.

Compare options by platform, project recommendation, and input flexibility rather than by an unsupported speed ranking. Someone playing on a laptop may prefer mGBA’s direct keyboard and controller configuration, while a phone user may value an app with an adjustable touchscreen layout. A handheld player should make sure physical buttons and emulator hotkeys can be separated. A Bluetooth game controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement, and compatibility depends on the device and app.

Set up the game controls

Heart & Soul uses the standard GBA control model, but the official game material does not publish one universal keyboard or controller map. Your physical keys therefore depend on the emulator, app version, controller, and device. The reliable method is to inspect the current bindings instead of copying a layout from another setup.

Use this control checklist

  1. Open the emulator’s Input, Controller, or similarly named settings while the patched game is selected.
  2. Identify bindings for the directional pad, the two main face buttons, the two shoulder buttons, Start, and Select.
  3. Assign each action to a comfortable keyboard key, handheld button, gamepad control, or touchscreen button. Avoid placing two important actions on the same physical control unless the emulator explicitly supports that combination.
  4. Save or apply the configuration. Some apps save a global profile; others save a profile for one game or one core.
  5. Return to the game and test every direction and button in a safe area where an accidental input cannot discard progress.

Test diagonals only if your device exposes them, and check that shoulder buttons register independently. If a button appears delayed or does not register, return to the input screen and look for duplicate bindings, a disconnected controller, or a touchscreen overlay covering the control.

Do not assume that a keyboard layout shown in a video or forum post matches your installation. Emulator defaults can change, and a controller may be recognized under a different profile after an operating-system update. The important result is a complete mapping that you have tested, not a particular letter or button assignment.

RetroArch: separate gameplay bindings from emulator hotkeys

RetroArch has two different kinds of assignments. The first is the mGBA core’s gameplay input: directions and GBA buttons. The second is the frontend’s hotkeys for emulator actions such as saving or loading a state, pausing, or changing screens. Configure both deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • In RetroArch’s input settings, use its automatic joypad configuration when a recognized controller profile is available, or bind controls manually when it is not.
  • Check that the active mGBA core receives the intended gameplay buttons after the profile is loaded.
  • Assign save-state and load-state actions in the separate hotkey settings. RetroArch allows an action to use a keyboard key or a joypad button.
  • Consider assigning a hotkey button as a modifier. A modifier lets a controller button remain a normal gameplay button while a button combination invokes an emulator action.
  • Test the combination in a disposable situation before relying on it. A mistaken load-state command can replace the current emulator snapshot.

The mGBA core supports controls and remapping, but menu names and profile behavior can change with RetroArch versions and devices. If a binding works in the frontend menu but not in the game, confirm that the mGBA core is the active core and that the profile was applied to the running content.

Touchscreen and Bluetooth controllers

On a phone or tablet, first arrange the on-screen D-pad and buttons so that your thumbs do not obscure the display. A Bluetooth game controller is optional; use one only if your device, operating system, and emulator support it. Pair it before opening the emulator, then bind its controls in the app. The project and emulator documentation do not establish that any particular controller model is required or universally compatible.

How saving works: in-game saves versus save states

Normal in-game saves

A normal save is the game’s own cartridge-style save data. It records progress in a format the game expects and is the correct method for long-term play, moving between supported emulator setups, and preparing for a soft reset. Use the game’s normal save command, wait for the save to finish, and avoid closing the emulator while it is writing the file.

The official FAQ states: For gift Pokemon, save the game normally, not a save state, and soft reset. Follow that instruction whenever you are resetting to try for a gift Pokémon or another result that depends on restarting the game. A save state made immediately before the reset is not an equivalent substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After saving, give the emulator a moment to flush the file before force-quitting the app or shutting down the device. For a backup, close the game cleanly first, copy the save file, and preserve the original copy before experimenting with another emulator or version.

Save states

A save state is an emulator-level snapshot of the running game. It can capture a moment between normal save points and let you return to that moment quickly, which makes it convenient for testing a control setup or retrying a short section. It is not the same file as the game’s normal save data.

Use states as temporary convenience snapshots, not as your only copy of progress. Keep a recent normal save as well, and create a fresh state after major changes to the emulator, core, controller profile, or patched ROM.

Method What it stores Best use Portability
Normal in-game save The game’s own progress data Primary progress, backups, transfers, and soft-reset preparation The FAQ identifies .sav, .srm, and .fla as transferable save-file formats, subject to emulator handling.
Save state An emulator snapshot of the running session Quick temporary checkpoints and experimentation The FAQ says save states do not transfer between setups.

Think of the two methods as separate layers. The in-game save belongs to the Pokémon title and is the portable record. A state belongs to a particular emulator session and may include details that another setup cannot reproduce. Saving both is sensible; treating a state as a replacement for the normal save is not.

Can save states transfer to another emulator or device?

According to the official FAQ, save states do not transfer between setups. A state can depend on the emulator, core, version, configuration, and exact patched ROM. Copying a state file to a different phone, computer, or emulator may therefore produce an error, load the wrong moment, or fail silently.

For moving progress, use the normal save file instead. The FAQ lists .sav, .srm, and .fla as save-file formats that can transfer, while the exact import location depends on the emulator. Always close the game cleanly before copying a save, keep a backup of the original file, and make sure the destination emulator is loading the save for the same patched game.

RetroArch file locations

For RetroArch’s mGBA core, the documentation identifies the frontend’s Save directory for .srm cartridge saves and the State directory for .state# files. These locations explain where RetroArch looks for its files; they do not change Heart & Soul’s compatibility rules. A state in the State directory remains an emulator snapshot and is not a substitute for copying the cartridge save from the Save directory.

If the destination does not see a copied save, check the extension and filename association first, then verify the emulator’s documented save directory. Keep only one clearly identified working copy in the active folder while troubleshooting; duplicate files with similar names can make it unclear which one the emulator loaded.

What happens when you update Heart & Soul?

Moving from v1.x to v2.x

The current download guide says pre-v2.0 saves cannot be used with the v2.x rebuild. If you are upgrading from a v1.x release, plan to begin a new save. Copying a v1.x .sav, .srm, or .fla into a v2.x setup will not make it compatible.

Moving between v2.x releases

Do not assume that every v2.x update handles saves identically. Before applying an update, back up both your normal save and the patched ROM, then read the release changelog for that specific version. Keep the old patched file until the new version has launched and loaded as expected. If the changelog requires a fresh save, retain the old file as an archive rather than repeatedly attempting to load it.

Save states deserve extra caution during updates. Even when a normal save remains usable, a state made with an earlier patched ROM or core may not. Treat every update as a reason to make a normal in-game save, close the emulator, and start a new state only after confirming that the updated game loads correctly.

Troubleshooting controls and saves

Symptom Likely cause Action
The game will not open The UPS file was opened directly, or patching used the wrong source ROM. Patch the legally obtained Emerald (U) ROM again with a UPS-compatible utility and open the new GBA output.
Buttons do nothing The profile was not applied, the wrong core is active, or the controller is disconnected. Reopen input settings, verify the active mGBA core, bind one control at a time, apply the profile, and test in-game.
A gameplay button triggers a menu or state action Gameplay and emulator hotkeys share a binding. Move the hotkey to another key or use a modifier combination, then test it away from important progress.
A save state disappeared after changing devices States are not portable between setups. Return to the original setup if possible, make a normal in-game save, and transfer the supported save file instead.
The transferred save is not detected The file is in the wrong directory, uses a format the destination expects differently, or belongs to another ROM/version. Back up the file, place it in the emulator’s documented save location, confirm the filename association, and check the Heart & Soul version rules.
A v1.x save fails in v2.x Pre-v2.0 saves are incompatible with the v2.x rebuild. Start a new v2.x save; retain the old file separately for archival use.
The game resets but the gift Pokémon result does not change as expected A save state was used instead of a normal save before soft-resetting. Save through the game normally, then perform the soft reset as directed by the FAQ.

A safe everyday routine

  1. Launch the patched v2.0.6 GBA file with the emulator recommended for your platform.
  2. Confirm that directions, the two main buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, and Select respond before beginning a long session.
  3. Use the game’s normal save whenever you reach a meaningful stopping point.
  4. Optionally create a clearly labelled emulator save state for a short-term retry or control test.
  5. Before updating an emulator, core, ROM patch, or device, close the game and back up the normal save and patched GBA file.
  6. For gift-Pokémon attempts, rely on the normal save and soft reset, not a save state.

This routine keeps the portable, game-owned progress separate from snapshots that belong to one emulator setup. It also gives you a recovery path if a hotkey is misassigned, a state becomes unusable, or a version update changes save compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up Pokémon Heart & Soul controls?

Open your emulator’s Input or Controller settings, map the GBA directions, A, B, L, R, Start, and Select actions, apply the profile, and test every control in a safe area. There is no single universal keyboard map in the project documentation; defaults vary by emulator, device, controller, and app version.

How do I configure save-state hotkeys in RetroArch?

Configure gameplay buttons for the mGBA core, then configure save-state and load-state commands separately in RetroArch’s hotkey settings. A keyboard key or joypad button can trigger an action, and a hotkey modifier can keep a controller button available for normal gameplay.

How do I save Pokémon Heart & Soul?

Use the game’s normal in-game save command for lasting progress. Wait for the save to finish before closing the emulator, and keep a backup of the resulting save file when moving devices or updating the patched game.

Can I use a save state for gift Pokémon soft resets?

No. The official Pokémon Heart & Soul FAQ says: “For gift Pokemon, save the game normally, not a save state, and soft reset.” A save state is an emulator snapshot and is not an equivalent replacement for the game’s normal save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer a Heart & Soul save to another emulator?

The FAQ identifies .sav, .srm, and .fla as save-file formats that can transfer, subject to the destination emulator’s handling. Save states do not transfer between setups. Copy the normal save only after closing the game, back it up, and place it in the destination emulator’s documented save directory.

Can I use a pre-v2.0 Heart & Soul save in v2.0.6?

No. The current download guide says pre-v2.0 saves cannot be used with the v2.x rebuild. Start a new v2.x save, while retaining the older file separately for archival purposes.

Which emulator should I use?

The current guide recommends mGBA on PC and Mac; Pizza Boy, Lemuroid, or RetroArch with the mGBA core on Android; Delta, RetroArch with the mGBA core, or Ignited on iOS; and RetroArch with the mGBA core on Linux handheld devices. MyBoy is described as outdated and is not recommended.

Why will the patched game not load?

Make sure you applied the v2.0.6 UPS patch to an unmodified, legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM and opened the newly created GBA file. The UPS file itself is patch data and is not the playable game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Patch v2.0.6 onto a clean Pokémon Emerald (U) ROM, load the new GBA in a recommended emulator, and configure gameplay controls and emulator hotkeys separately. Use normal in-game saves for progress and transfers; treat save states as temporary, setup-specific snapshots. For gift Pokémon, follow the FAQ’s instruction to save normally and soft reset.
