The current Xbox listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition labels the game Single player. The official pages reviewed do not document an online co-op mode, competitive multiplayer, or any other multiplayer feature. You should therefore buy or launch it expecting a solo campaign rather than a game that supports a second player.

The absence of a documented multiplayer mode is also important when interpreting references to “the family” or the three lieutenants: those are campaign characters and systems, not human co-op partners. Your decisions about them affect the single-player story and the resources available to Lincoln.
Is Mafia 3 cross-platform or cross-play?

Because the Xbox listing classifies the game as single-player, there is no stated multiplayer session for players on different systems to join. That is three story expansions plus two bonus packs, in addition to the main game. A listing that says only “Mafia III” without identifying the Definitive Edition may not present the same bundle, so read the included-content panel rather than relying on the title alone.
How do I start the Mafia 3 DLC?
The expansions are not necessarily available from the opening minutes. 2K’s instructions set a campaign progression gate:
- Complete the mission “The Sit Down.”
- Make sure all three lieutenants are by Lincoln’s side.
- Open the in-game map and travel to the indicated location for the DLC mission.
2K summarizes the requirement this way: “After Lincoln has completed the ‘Sit Down’ mission and has all three Lieutenants by his side, you’ll be able start DLC missions by going to the indicated location on the in-game map.” If an expansion appears in your library but no mission marker is visible, check those two campaign conditions before reinstalling anything.

- Confirm that the DLC is installed or claimed for the same platform account that owns the base game.
- Advance the main story until “The Sit Down” is complete; merely owning the Definitive Edition does not bypass the progression gate.
- Return to the map after the lieutenant requirement is met and look for the indicated location rather than expecting a separate launcher.
- Connect to the internet long enough to apply available patches, then restart the game if your platform has not refreshed the installed content.
Do I need PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core or an internet connection?
2K says no PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass Core or internet connection is required to play the game “straight out of the box.” That means the basic single-player experience is designed to work offline and does not require a recurring console multiplayer subscription.

2K still recommends an internet connection for patches and updates. Offline play therefore describes the game’s requirement for ordinary solo gameplay, not a promise that every platform entitlement, update or future store transaction can be completed without a connection. Install the game and any owned add-ons first, apply updates when practical, and then use offline mode if you need to play without network access.
What happens to existing owners and DLC downloads?
2K stated that existing owners of the PS4, Xbox One and Steam versions received the Definitive Edition at no extra charge. The entitlement process differs by platform:

When comparing two listings, check these details in order:
- The exact platform version, including whether it is Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 or PC.
- Whether the title says Definitive Edition rather than simply naming the base game.
- The included-content list, confirming all three story DLC episodes and both bonus packs.
- Whether you are buying a new digital entitlement, a used disc or an upgrade for an existing owner.

Wiretaps and district information
Wiretaps reveal nearby enemies and collectibles on the map. In a district with a wiretap, attempting to take over a racket can sometimes give you the option to recruit its boss, increasing total earnings. Without that information, the confrontation may leave killing the boss as the only available option. Nearby fuses are found around junction boxes and can be revealed through the map’s Intel View.
Scoped aiming and account linking
On an Xbox controller, use the Left Control Stick while in scope mode; on PlayStation 4, use L3. The paused Game Menu contains the Link My2K option for players who want to connect that account. Neither feature changes the game’s single-player status or creates cross-platform progression.
