If Squad shows no servers, only a few results, or hides one specific server, update the game first, then reset browser filters and compare the in-game list with Steam’s server browser. Identify which visibility problem you have
The symptom determines where to start. “No servers” after an update usually points to an unfinished client update or a temporary browser state. A short or slow list can be caused by filters, refresh timing, browser-rate settings, or packet loss. If one server is absent while others appear, inspect that server’s configuration and network path instead of changing your whole installation.

1. Update Squad before diagnosing networking
The official Squad troubleshooting manual says an undownloaded update can leave you running a previous version that is incompatible with servers. This is the highest-value check when the browser became empty after a patch or when every result disappeared at once.
- Exit Squad completely.
- Open Steam and wait for every Squad download, installation, or verification task to finish.
- In Squad’s Steam update settings, set the update priority to High Priority so pending patches are not deferred behind other downloads.
- Restart Steam after the download completes, launch Squad again, and open the browser only once it reaches the main menu.
Do not treat a partially downloaded update as a networking failure. A client on the previous build may still start, but it cannot reliably populate or join servers running the current build. If you administer the server, apply the dedicated-server update before asking players to test again; a current client and an old server can produce the same misleading “missing server” symptom.

2. Reset discovery conditions and let the list populate
A browser can look empty while it is still fetching results. Squad Hotfix 7.1.1 specifically addressed cases where no servers appeared when the browser was opened quickly or immediately after disconnecting, as well as stale Favorites and Recents results.
Remove restrictive filters
Open the in-game server browser and clear every optional restriction, including map, game mode, region, ping limit, full or empty status, mod, and tag filters. A filter left over from a previous session can reduce a healthy list to zero without producing an error. Check each filter control individually; a hidden region or “not full” selection is easy to overlook.
Refresh once, then wait
- Open the browser.
- Remove the filters listed above.
- Start one refresh and leave the browser open while results arrive.
- Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the browser, especially just after disconnecting from a match.
After the first complete result set appears, reapply one filter at a time. This identifies the setting that hides the servers instead of making several changes simultaneously. Repeated refreshes are not a reliable speed test: they can create another high-volume query while the previous result set is still being assembled.
Do not trust stale Favorites or Recents
If a saved entry is absent, search the full list rather than assuming the server is offline. The 7.1.1 fixes included stale results in Favorites and Recents, so those views can lag behind the live directory. Remove an old favorite only after checking the unfiltered list; otherwise you may mistake a stale saved record for a configuration problem on the host.
3. Compare Squad’s browser with Steam’s browser
Two discovery paths separate a game-client problem from a host or Steam-connectivity problem.
- In Steam, open View > Servers.
- Use the game filter to select Squad.
- Wait for the list to finish refreshing and search for the server by name or address if you have it.
- Open Squad’s own browser and perform a fresh, unfiltered search.

Use the same server name, address, and timing for both tests. If one browser is checked immediately and the other is left open to complete its refresh, the comparison is not meaningful. Record whether the problem affects every server or only a particular host before moving to router changes.

Review the pings-per-minute value
In Steam settings, locate the in-game server-browser pings-per-minute option and review its value. An unsuitable rate can make a large refresh slow or incomplete. Change it conservatively, restart the browser, and compare a single fresh refresh rather than repeatedly forcing high-volume scans. The goal is a complete, repeatable result, not the largest possible burst of queries.
Test the network that is actually in use
University, business, hotel, workplace, and proxy-managed networks may block the UDP or TCP traffic Steam needs for server discovery. A home connection that works while a managed connection does not points to policy, not to Squad’s server list.
Steam also notes that required ports cannot simply be remapped to an arbitrary custom range. If an administrator or proxy blocks the documented traffic, ask the network operator to permit it or test from an unrestricted connection. Do not assume a VPN or another overlay is a required fix; first establish whether policy or packet loss is the cause. A successful test on a different network is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the original host configuration is correct.
5. Verify one missing server on the host
When every other server appears but one hosted server does not, inspect the dedicated server rather than changing client filters indefinitely.
Confirm public-advertising settings
Open the dedicated server’s Server.cfg and check these values:
ServerNamemust use valid quoting for the configuration format. An unmatched quote or malformed value can prevent the name from being published correctly.ShouldAdvertisemust betrue. A server that is running but not advertising will not appear in the public directory.IsLANMatchmust befalsefor a public listing. LAN mode is intended for local discovery and can hide the server from internet players.
After editing the file, stop and restart the server so the settings are loaded. Search by the exact advertised name after the restart instead of relying on an old Favorite. If the name contains unusual punctuation or spacing, use the server address as the comparison when Steam’s browser allows it; this avoids confusing a naming mismatch with a directory failure.
Bring the server to the current build
The host must be updated as well as each player’s client. A server left on an older build can be online at the machine level while remaining incompatible with current clients or absent from useful search results. Finish the dedicated-server update before testing advertising again. Have one outside player repeat the search after the restart so a local cached result is not mistaken for public visibility.

6. Check Squad’s documented ports
Squad’s server documentation lists the following traffic. These are configuration values, not statistics about server populations; the exact requirements can vary with the server setup and software version.

Allowing a port in the operating-system firewall is not enough if the router still sends it to the wrong internal address. Likewise, forwarding a port is ineffective when the host firewall drops the packet. Verify the protocol as well as the number: a rule for TCP does not automatically permit UDP, and the documented entries include both protocols for several services.
Keep the port test focused
Change one rule at a time and retest from outside the host network. If visibility improves after the Steam query ports are permitted, document that result before touching game or RCON rules. Avoid opening every port above 30000 without checking the server’s actual configuration; broad exposure makes the cause harder to identify and increases unnecessary attack surface.
7. Check firewall, router forwarding, and NAT
Confirm the server’s private address
Addresses such as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x are private. They identify the machine inside the host’s LAN and cannot be reached directly from the public internet. Forward the documented server ports from the router’s public interface to the machine’s current private address.

If the machine receives a different private address after a reboot, a rule can silently point at the wrong computer. Reserve the host’s LAN address in the router or otherwise ensure the forwarding destination does not change, then verify the operating-system firewall allows the same ports. Check that the dedicated server is listening on the intended machine, not on a second computer that happens to share the network.
Consider carrier-grade NAT
Carrier-grade NAT can place the household router behind another provider-managed NAT layer. In that situation, local forwarding rules may be correct but inbound IPv4 traffic still cannot reach the server. Compare the router’s reported WAN address with the public address shown by the provider or connection diagnostics. If they differ because the provider is using CGNAT, request a reachable public address or host from a network that permits inbound connections.
Test from outside the LAN
A server can appear reachable to the host and nearby players while remaining invisible externally because local devices use loopback or hairpin behavior. Have a player on another network search for the server, or test while the host is connected through a separate external connection. An outside test is the meaningful check for public visibility. Testing only from the same LAN cannot confirm that router forwarding, the public address, or provider NAT is working.

8. Separate visibility from joining problems
If both browsers list the server, the directory and advertising path are functioning. Stop changing filters and ports at that point. A failed join, authentication message, mod mismatch, or connection timeout is a different branch and needs its own diagnosis. Conversely, if the server is absent from both lists, do not spend time changing in-game join settings; return to version, advertising, Steam query traffic, and external reachability.
9. Match the fix to the symptom
No servers at all after an update
- Finish all Squad downloads in Steam.
- Set Squad’s update priority to High Priority.
- Restart Steam and Squad.
- Open the browser once and wait for the initial result set.
Only a few servers or a slow list
- Clear map, mode, region, ping, full/empty, mod, and tag filters.
- Refresh once and wait instead of repeatedly reopening the browser.
- Review Steam’s pings-per-minute browser setting.
- Test for router packet loss and compare an unrestricted network.
Steam sees servers but Squad does not
- Verify Squad’s client build is current.
- Reset the in-game filters and search again after waiting.
- Use the 7.1.1 quick-open and stale-results behavior as a clue: close the browser, reconnect, and allow a full fresh population.
Only your hosted server is absent
- Check valid
ServerNamequoting. - Set
ShouldAdvertise=trueandIsLANMatch=false. - Update the dedicated server.
- Verify the firewall, router forwarding, and documented ports.
- Test from outside the host network and investigate CGNAT if external players still cannot see it.
10. Use a controlled retest
After each meaningful change, use the same sequence: restart the affected program or server, open one browser, clear filters, wait for a complete refresh, and record whether the result changed. Then repeat the search from the other browser or from an outside network. This prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding which action mattered.
Record the client and dedicated-server update state, whether the symptom affects all servers or one, which browser showed the result, the network type in use, and whether an external player reproduced the absence. These details distinguish an unfinished update from a blocked Steam query and distinguish a stale in-game list from a host that is not publicly reachable.
11. When the list is still empty
The practical order is deliberate: update first, remove discovery restrictions, compare both browsers, then move to Steam network policy and host-side advertising and reachability. Changing router settings before establishing which branch applies can introduce new problems without addressing the original symptom.
If the issue began immediately after disconnecting from a match, allow a fresh browser population instead of assuming the directory is down. If it began immediately after a patch, verify every Steam download before testing ports. If only an externally hosted server is missing, prioritize Server.cfg, the server build, query ports, firewall rules, forwarding, and CGNAT. This branch-based approach is faster than applying every possible fix at once.
