You can play your PS5 remotely on a PlayStation Portal or a compatible phone using Sony’s free PS Remote Play app. The PS5 must be on or configured to wake from Rest Mode, and the handheld or phone must sign in with the same PlayStation account. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends 15 Mbps in both directions; those thresholds do not guarantee a lag-free connection.

What do you need for PS5 Remote Play?

Remote Play streams and controls games running on your PS5. The console is the host: Portal and the phone app connect to it rather than running PS5 games independently. Sony documents two straightforward options: the dedicated PlayStation Portal, which connects over Wi-Fi, and the PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone, which can use Wi-Fi or mobile data if enabled.

  • A PS5 with current system software, internet access, and Remote Play enabled for the intended user.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and the device you will use to connect.
  • A suitable network. Sony’s guidance is 5 Mbps minimum upload and download, with 15 Mbps in both directions recommended for better performance. These are connection-speed thresholds, not a guarantee about latency or stream stability. Sony’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guide gives these figures.
  • For a phone, the PS Remote Play app and either touch controls or a compatible controller. Portal has integrated PlayStation-style controls.

Remote Play is not compatible with every game or every function a PS5 can perform. Some games and simultaneous console functions do not support it. Portal Remote Play connects to a PS5, not directly to a PS4; do not assume an arbitrary third-party handheld can run Sony’s app.

Think of the setup as a link between three things: the PS5 must be online and available, the handheld must be signed into the matching account, and the networks at both ends must allow a steady connection. A fast internet plan alone does not satisfy the other requirements. If any of these pieces is missing, the device may fail to find the console or may connect unreliably.

You do not need to buy a controller to try the phone route: the app includes on-screen touch controls. If you prefer physical controls, check whether your existing controller works with the phone and app, or whether you need an attachment. There is no universal accessory fit; the phone model, operating system, connector, and exact controller version matter.

How do you set up Remote Play on PS5 Portal?

Enable the feature on the PS5 first, then connect Portal using the same account. Do the first connection at home before relying on the setup away from the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the PS5. Install available system software updates so the console and Portal are not trying to connect with outdated software.
  2. Enable Remote Play for your user. On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play, then turn on Enable Remote Play for the account you intend to use. Sony’s Portal Remote Play setup guide lists this setting.
  3. Allow the PS5 to wake over the network, if you want to connect from Rest Mode. Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  4. Connect Portal to Wi-Fi and sign in. Use the same PlayStation account as on the PS5.
  5. Start the connection. On Portal’s home screen, tap the portal icon or press the cross button to connect to the previously used PS5.
  6. Check the setup at home. Confirm that Portal can connect before taking it to another network. If the console does not appear, verify the account and PS5 settings before changing router settings.

The two Rest Mode options serve different purposes: one keeps the console connected to the internet while resting, and the other allows it to be turned on over the network. Both need to be enabled for this wake-from-Rest-Mode setup. If you prefer not to leave the console in Rest Mode, you can connect while it is already on, but a fully powered-off PS5 cannot be woken by those settings.

At-home testing gives you a useful baseline. Confirm that Portal can connect while you are near the console and on your home network, then try a short session. If that works, you have checked the account, console setting, and basic connection before depending on a hotel or public Wi-Fi network. A successful home test does not guarantee every outside network will permit Remote Play.

How do you set up Remote Play on a phone?

Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app, enable Remote Play and the Rest Mode options on the PS5, then sign in to the app with the console’s account. The app searches for the PS5 and connects to it.

  1. Install PS Remote Play from your phone’s app store.
  2. On the PS5, follow the same console setup: enable Remote Play at Settings > System > Remote Play, and enable both network wake options under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode if you want to connect while the console is resting.
  3. Open the app and sign in with the PlayStation account used on the PS5. Select PS5 when prompted; the app will search for and connect to the console.
  4. Choose touch controls or connect a compatible controller. Touch controls appear on the phone screen. Controller compatibility depends on the phone and controller: check the connector and operating-system requirements for the exact model before buying an attachment.
  5. For mobile data, open the app’s Settings > Mobile Data and select Use Mobile Data. Consider your carrier’s coverage and data allowance before streaming away from Wi-Fi.

Sony’s Android guidance for the Backbone One PlayStation Edition specifies Android 10 or later and USB-C. Its linked iPhone guidance describes a Lightning-connected version; that does not establish compatibility with every iPhone connector. Verify the phone’s port and the exact controller version before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app’s mobile-data switch is an opt-in, not an indication that every cellular connection will work equally well. Coverage, congestion, and carrier conditions can affect the experience, and streaming uses data. Sony does not give a standard data-per-hour figure in the cited guidance, so check your own plan rather than relying on a universal estimate. If you want to avoid cellular usage, keep mobile data disabled and connect over Wi-Fi.

What is the difference between Portal and a phone?

Portal is a dedicated handheld with a built-in screen and controls; a phone lets you use a device you may already own, with touch controls or a compatible controller. Both routes still depend on the PS5 and the quality of the network connection.

Feature PlayStation Portal Phone with PS Remote Play
Device needed Dedicated PlayStation Portal hardware Compatible phone; a separate controller is optional
Screen and controls 8-inch LCD, 1080p; integrated controls. Sony describes capability of up to 60 fps, not a guaranteed stream rate. Sony’s Portal product information Uses the phone’s screen; offers touch controls or a compatible PlayStation controller or phone attachment
Connection options Wi-Fi Wi-Fi or mobile data, if enabled in the app
Audio 3.5 mm headset jack and PlayStation Link wireless audio; Sony names PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite as supported products Depends on the phone and connected audio equipment
Extra hardware cost Requires purchasing the dedicated device if you do not already have one No dedicated Remote Play handheld is required; an optional controller or attachment may add cost

The 60-fps figure is a Portal capability in Sony’s product guidance, not a promise that the network will deliver every game at that rate. A phone’s screen, controller fit, and audio depend on the specific device and accessories.

For a buying decision, compare what you already own with what you would have to add. Portal is a dedicated device with an 8-inch LCD, integrated controls, a 3.5 mm headset jack, and PlayStation Link wireless-audio support. Sony specifically names PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite for PlayStation Link. The Portal route therefore avoids relying on a phone connector or attaching a separate controller, but it does require the Portal hardware if you do not already have it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone route can avoid buying a dedicated handheld and offers mobile-data access when enabled, but physical controls may mean an additional purchase. A Backbone One PlayStation Edition is one documented phone-controller option, not a universal recommendation for every phone: check the OS and connector version first. A wired headset or the phone’s supported wireless audio are alternatives subject to that phone’s capabilities. Neither buying a controller nor choosing Portal changes the underlying network requirements.

If your home router cannot provide 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal or your PS5 is difficult to place near it, an Ethernet cable can be a practical way to wire the PS5. A router upgrade is only relevant if your existing equipment cannot provide a suitable connection; no new router, cable, or accessory guarantees better stream performance. Sony’s guidance does not specify a required cable category, paid service, or accessory purchase for ordinary Remote Play.

Can you use PS5 Remote Play away from home?

Yes. Portal can connect over suitable Wi-Fi, and the phone app can use mobile data when that option is enabled. The connection still depends on the networks at both ends, so successful setup at home does not guarantee the same quality on a public or mobile connection.

Portal works on select public Wi-Fi networks that require additional validation if its system software is version 3.0.1 or later. After the initial setup on home Wi-Fi, a smartphone or tablet can be used to complete the extra network validation steps. This is not a guarantee that every hotel, airport, or captive-portal network will work. A phone using mobile data may also consume a substantial part of a plan’s allowance; the available guidance does not specify a standard amount of data per hour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For travel, check the practical details before you leave: Portal needs Wi-Fi access, and a public network may require a sign-in or validation process that is not supported. The phone app can instead use cellular service if you have enabled it and have coverage, but that can count against your plan. In either case, the PS5 at home must remain connected to the internet and be able to wake from Rest Mode if you expect to start it remotely.

Portal’s extra-validation behavior for select public networks is tied to version 3.0.1 or later and requires a smartphone or tablet for the validation steps after initial home setup. It should be treated as a specific supported case, not a blanket promise about public Wi-Fi. If you plan to use an unfamiliar network, update Portal and test your home connection first; an individual network may still restrict the connection.

Does Remote Play require PlayStation Plus?

No subscription is required for ordinary Remote Play itself. A game’s online multiplayer may still have its own PlayStation Plus requirement. Portal’s separate cloud-streaming mode is different: Sony says it requires PlayStation Plus Premium, eligible PS5 titles, and availability in the user’s region. Do not treat that cloud-streaming requirement as part of the standard Remote Play setup.

With ordinary Remote Play, the PS5 runs the game and Portal or the phone acts as its remote screen and controller. Cloud streaming is a separate Portal feature, not a prerequisite for linking to your console. Whether a particular game’s online multiplayer requires a subscription is a separate game-service question; Remote Play itself does not remove or add that game-specific requirement.

How should you arrange your home network?

For the most straightforward home layout, wire the PS5 to the router with Ethernet where practical and connect Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If the PS5 is using Wi-Fi instead, Sony recommends putting both devices on the same Wi-Fi network at home.

  • Prefer Ethernet for the PS5. Sony’s Portal support guide says to connect the PS5 to the internet using a wired connection. This is a recommendation, not a requirement to purchase new equipment.
  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal where available. Sony also suggests disabling router band steering for Portal if that option is available. Router menus and terminology differ, so the setting may not be present under that name.
  • Check both directions of the connection. Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation apply to both upload and download. These values describe connection speed; they do not promise a particular delay, picture quality, or uninterrupted session.
  • Reduce competing network use when troubleshooting. Pausing other downloads and moving the handheld closer to the router are reasonable first checks when the stream is unstable.

A faster plan or new router is not a guarantee of better Remote Play. The route between the PS5 and the handheld, Wi-Fi conditions, and competing network traffic can all affect the session.

Do not read Sony’s speed numbers as a target for only the device in your hand. The stated minimum and recommendation are for upload and download, so check each direction rather than looking at a single headline speed. Upload matters because the console side has to send the game stream outward; download matters because the receiving device has to take it in. Meeting the threshold is a baseline, not a diagnostic that rules out interference, congestion, or routing problems.

The preferred layout separates the wired console from the wireless handheld: Ethernet for the PS5 where practical and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal. If wiring is not practical and the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, Sony recommends using the same Wi-Fi network for both devices at home. Band steering can move devices between router bands automatically; Sony suggests disabling it for Portal if the router exposes that option. This is not a mandatory setting, and router interfaces vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the stream stutters, make one change at a time: pause downloads competing for bandwidth, move closer to the access point, or test with the PS5 wired. Then try again. Buying a faster internet tier or a new router should not be the first assumption, especially if the issue occurs only on one distant or public network.

Why does Remote Play keep disconnecting or fail to find the PS5?

Start with account, console, and Rest Mode settings before changing router or ISP configuration. If those basics are correct, check the connection on both sides and work through the network in stages.

  1. Confirm the account and Remote Play setting. The handheld app or Portal and the PS5 must use the same PlayStation account, and Remote Play must be enabled for the relevant PS5 user.
  2. Check whether the console is reachable. If it is in Rest Mode, verify both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network are on. A PS5 that is fully powered off cannot be woken by those Rest Mode network options.
  3. Test the PS5’s connection. On the console, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Confirm the console has internet access.
  4. Check speed and local Wi-Fi conditions. Compare upload and download against Sony’s minimum and recommended figures. Pause other downloads, move Portal or the phone nearer the router, and try a wired PS5 connection if available.
  5. Update Portal before advanced troubleshooting. Sony lists UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play and notes that NAT Type 3 can prevent use. Router or ISP changes should be a later troubleshooting step, not a universal setup requirement; if needed, consult the router or provider documentation rather than changing unrelated firewall settings.
  6. Test the home connection before a trip. If it works locally but not on a particular public network, the network’s restrictions or sign-in process may be the obstacle rather than a problem with the PS5 configuration.

If Portal does not connect, begin with the PS5’s online status and the account currently signed in on both devices. Confirm Remote Play is enabled for the intended PS5 user, not just another user on the console. If the console is resting, recheck both network-wake options. Then use the console’s internet test rather than assuming a functioning household Wi-Fi network means the PS5 itself is online.

For unstable sessions, compare the connection to Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation in both directions, then reduce local competition and improve the Wi-Fi path. Try 5 GHz for Portal where suitable, move it nearer the router, and wire the PS5 if possible. If the connection fails only away from home, consider whether that particular network blocks or complicates Remote Play before changing your home router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only move to advanced network troubleshooting after the basic setup and software checks. Sony identifies UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent use. That does not mean every user needs to manually configure a port or alter firewall settings. Router and ISP behavior varies, so consult their documentation if the issue persists rather than making broad changes that could affect other devices.

Frequently asked questions

Does my PS5 need to be on?

It needs to be on or in Rest Mode with both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network enabled. Those options allow network wake from Rest Mode; they do not wake a console that is fully powered off.

How fast does my internet need to be?

Sony specifies 5 Mbps minimum upload and download and recommends 15 Mbps in each direction for better performance. The figures are not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, latency, or uninterrupted connection.

Can I use PS Portal away from home?

Yes, on suitable Wi-Fi. Select public networks with extra validation can work with Portal software version 3.0.1 or later, using a smartphone or tablet to complete the validation after initial setup at home. Not every public network is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my phone instead?

Yes. Install PS Remote Play, sign in with the PS5’s account, and connect over Wi-Fi or enabled mobile data. The phone app includes touch controls, and compatible controllers are optional. Check your phone’s OS and connector before buying an attachment.

Do I need PS Plus?

Not for ordinary Remote Play. A game may separately require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Portal’s separate cloud-streaming feature requires Premium, eligible PS5 titles, and regional availability.

Can I use Portal if I do not have a home Wi-Fi router?

Portal requires Wi-Fi and cannot connect directly using mobile data. It may work on suitable Wi-Fi elsewhere, but the PS5 must still be reachable and the network must permit the connection.

Does a 1080p Portal screen mean Remote Play always streams at 1080p?

No. The 1080p figure describes the Portal display. Sony’s product guidance does not guarantee that every Remote Play session is delivered at that resolution.

Can I use PS Remote Play on any handheld PC?

Not necessarily. Sony’s documented routes cover Portal and compatible phones, and do not establish that an arbitrary third-party handheld supports the app and account sign-in. Check the specific device before relying on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Portal if I do not have a home Wi-Fi router?

Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection, so it cannot connect using mobile data directly. If a suitable Wi-Fi network is available elsewhere, it may work there, subject to that network’s compatibility and the PS5’s reachability.

Does a 1080p Portal screen mean Remote Play always streams at 1080p?

No. The 1080p figure describes Portal’s display specification. Sony’s product guidance does not make that a guarantee about the resolution delivered in every Remote Play session.

Can I use PS Remote Play on any handheld PC?

Compatibility with arbitrary third-party handhelds is not established by Sony’s documented Portal and phone setup guidance. Check whether the specific device supports Sony’s app and account sign-in before relying on it.

The Bottom Line

For a reliable starting point, enable Remote Play on the PS5, keep both Rest Mode network options on if you want remote wake, and use the same account on the console and handheld. Prefer Ethernet for the PS5 and suitable 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal; Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps recommended in both directions. Test at home before traveling, and treat public Wi-Fi, mobile data, and accessory compatibility as device- and network-dependent.
