For a mirrored data drive on current Windows 10 or Windows 11, use Storage Spaces and choose Two-way mirror. You need at least two additional eligible drives besides the drive containing Windows. Storage Spaces writes two copies of each file and can keep the volume available after one physical-drive failure, but usable capacity is lower than the combined raw capacity.
Storage Spaces cannot contain the Windows operating system itself. Mirroring a boot drive is a separate, more complex procedure documented for Windows Server, so treat boot mirroring as an edition- and firmware-specific project rather than the normal Windows 10/11 setup.

What does RAID 1 mean on Windows, and which method should you choose?
RAID 1 is a mirror: the same data is written to two physical drives. If one drive fails, the other copy can continue serving the volume. On Windows, the right implementation depends on whether you are protecting data or trying to mirror the operating-system boot volume.
| Method | Primary use | Current support posture | Drive requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Spaces, Two-way mirror | Data volumes on Windows 10 and Windows 11 | Microsoft’s supported recommendation for data resiliency | At least two extra eligible drives, in addition to the Windows drive | Cannot host Windows; two copies reduce usable capacity |
| Dynamic-disk mirror | Legacy data configurations | Dynamic disks are deprecated for uses other than mirror boot volumes | Two dynamic disks | Use mainly for compatibility with an existing configuration |
| GPT boot-volume mirror | Operating-system boot protection | Separate Windows Server procedure | Second GPT disk with matching EFI and Microsoft Reserved partitions, then dynamic-disk and boot-file preparation | Edition, UEFI and motherboard support must be verified before attempting it |
For a new Windows gaming PC or home server, Storage Spaces is the practical choice when the goal is keeping a data volume available after a single drive failure. It is not a substitute for a separate backup: mirroring does not by itself protect against accidental deletion, malware, file corruption or loss of the entire computer or site.

What “RAID 1” does and does not cover
The mirror is concerned with the physical-drive failure scenario. It keeps two copies on two members, so one failed member does not immediately remove the data volume. It does not create historical versions of files. If you delete a folder, overwrite a document, or allow malicious or corrupted data onto the volume, that change is represented on both copies. It also does not help if the computer, its storage connections, or the location containing both drives is lost.
That distinction matters when deciding what to protect. A mirror can improve availability for a working game library, recordings directory, or documents volume. A separate backup is still needed for recovery from user mistakes, malware, corruption, theft, or site damage.

How do I set up RAID 1 with Storage Spaces?
Connect two drives that are not needed for the Windows installation, create a storage pool, and make a storage space with Two-way mirror resiliency. The following labels are the current Storage Spaces workflow in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Check the hardware before creating the pool
- Provide two additional drives. Microsoft says you need at least two extra drives. They are in addition to the drive containing Windows, not two partitions carved from that same operating-system disk.
- Use eligible physical media. The drives may be hard drives or SSDs connected internally or through SATA, SAS, or an eligible USB arrangement. Storage Spaces decides eligibility from how Windows presents the physical device.
- Back up anything already on the drives. Select disks for a new pool only after moving files you need elsewhere. Creating the pool and formatting the resulting volume changes how those disks are used.
- Prefer direct, individually visible connections. Some USB hubs and multi-drive enclosures hide the individual disks behind one device identity or report them as removable. That can make a disk ineligible even though it opens normally in File Explorer.
- Plan for a single-drive failure, not unlimited redundancy. Two-way resiliency makes two copies and tolerates one physical-drive failure. It is not a two-failure design.
Keep the Windows installation drive connected so you can administer the pool, but do not select that drive as one of the new pool members. The mirror is a separate data volume mounted beside Windows.
Create the two-way mirror
- Connect both intended mirror drives, leaving the drive that contains Windows connected as well.
- Search for Storage Spaces from the taskbar and open it.
- Under Add a new Storage Pool, select Add.
- Enter a pool name, select the intended disks under Add disks, and create the pool. Carefully check the disks listed before confirming; a disk selected for the pool is no longer being treated as an ordinary standalone volume in the way it was before.
- Give the new storage space a name that identifies its purpose, such as a data or games volume.
- For resiliency, select Two-way mirror. Do not choose a non-mirrored layout if the purpose is protection from one member failure.
- Set the maximum size and create the storage space. The capacity shown by the wizard reflects the mirror layout rather than simply adding the two drive-label capacities.
- Assign a volume label and a drive letter so Windows and your applications can address the new volume.
- Select the file system offered by the wizard for the volume.
- Select Format to finish creating the usable volume.
After formatting, Windows presents the storage space as a normal drive letter. Store game libraries, recordings, documents or other data on that letter rather than on the Windows installation volume if you want those files covered by the mirror.
What should I verify before clicking Format?
Formatting is the point at which the new volume becomes ready for use, so verify the pool name, member disks, resiliency setting, maximum size, label and drive letter first. Confirm that the Windows disk is not selected and that no needed files remain on either intended member. If the wizard does not show the drives, stop and resolve eligibility rather than formatting a different disk by mistake.

How much space does a two-way mirror provide, and how many failures can it survive?
A two-way mirror keeps two copies of every file. Because one copy is reserved on each side of the mirror, the usable result is less than adding the advertised capacities of both drives together. Microsoft describes the layout as making two copies and tolerating one drive failure.

- One physical-drive failure: the remaining copy can keep the mirrored volume available.
- Two simultaneous drive failures: a two-way mirror is not described as protecting against this situation.
- Accidental deletion or malware: the unwanted change is copied to both sides, so mirroring does not provide a historical restore point.
- File corruption: a corrupted write can be present in both copies; the mirror is not an independent versioned backup.
- Computer, controller or site loss: both copies are in the same system unless you separately protect them elsewhere.
Plan capacity from the space the mirror reports after creation, not from the sum printed on the drive labels. Equal-sized members make capacity planning easier, but the essential requirement is that Windows accept both as eligible physical disks. Leave room for the data you expect to add and keep an independent backup for files that must survive causes other than a single physical-drive failure.
Why might Storage Spaces reject a drive that works in File Explorer?
Storage Spaces requires Windows to identify each member as an eligible physical disk. A disk can be readable in File Explorer and still fail the eligibility check when an enclosure or hub hides the individual devices or reports them as removable.
Check whether Windows sees a fixed disk
- Open Device Manager or Disk Management.
- Locate the physical drive rather than only the mounted volume. A drive letter proves that Windows can mount something; it does not prove that Storage Spaces can claim the underlying disk.
- Confirm that Windows reports it as Fixed, not Removable.
- If several disks are connected through a USB enclosure or hub, test a direct connection or an enclosure that exposes each disk separately.
- Return to Storage Spaces and run the add-pool workflow again after Windows presents the disks individually.
Some enclosures expose a combined device instead of separate physical identities. In that case, Storage Spaces cannot necessarily select the members independently. The enclosure’s firmware and the way it presents the disk can determine eligibility, even when the same disk appears perfectly usable for ordinary file transfers.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can Storage Spaces mirror the Windows boot drive?
No. Microsoft’s Storage Spaces deployment guidance states that a storage space cannot host the Windows operating system. You can mirror a data volume created beside Windows, but the Windows boot files and operating-system volume require a different design.
Microsoft’s documented boot-mirroring procedure is for Windows Server. It prepares a second GPT disk with matching EFI and Microsoft Reserved partitions, converts the disks to dynamic disks, mirrors the boot volume, waits for synchronization and places boot files so the second disk can start the system if the first fails.
That sequence has more prerequisites than creating a data space. The second disk needs the appropriate partition layout, both disks must be handled in the required disk format, and boot files must be prepared on the second member. A mirror that contains data but lacks usable boot files will not provide the intended startup fallback.
Because that procedure is documented for Windows Server rather than as a general Windows 10/11 client recipe, verify your Windows edition, UEFI configuration, motherboard behavior and recovery plan before attempting it. Do not start by converting a working gaming-PC disk to dynamic without confirming that your edition and firmware can boot the resulting layout. Keep a tested recovery path and a current backup before changing the boot disk structure.

Should I use a dynamic-disk mirror instead?
Usually not for a new data volume. Microsoft’s current technical guidance says dynamic disks are deprecated for all uses except mirror boot volumes and directs users to Storage Spaces when data needs resiliency against drive failure.
A dynamic mirror remains relevant when you must preserve an existing configuration or a specific compatibility requirement. It is a different scope from a Storage Spaces pool: the mirror is built from two dynamic disks rather than from a new Storage Spaces storage space, and it should not be selected simply because the word “mirror” appears in both workflows.
DiskPart’s command for creating one is:
create volume mirror [size=<n>] disk=<n>,<n>
For example:
create volume mirror size=1000 disk=1,2
The command requires two dynamic disks and allocates equal space on each. Disk numbers are assigned by Windows, so verify them carefully in DiskPart before running a command; selecting the wrong disks can destroy the wrong volume. For a fresh Windows 10/11 data mirror, use Storage Spaces instead of adopting this legacy path.
What should I do after creating the mirror?
Use the new drive letter as a normal data volume, but keep its role clear. The mirror protects the files stored there from one physical-drive failure; it does not automatically relocate Windows, applications installed on the system volume or files left on other drives.

- Keep save-game backups or cloud synchronization enabled where the game supports them.
- Maintain a separate backup for irreplaceable saves, captures and configuration files.
- Watch for Storage Spaces warnings and investigate a failed or disconnected member promptly rather than treating the mirror as permanent protection.
- After a warning or hardware change, confirm that Windows still sees both physical members individually and that the expected drive letter remains available.
What are the most common setup mistakes?
Using the Windows disk as one of the pool members
Storage Spaces needs two additional drives for the data mirror. The drive containing Windows is not the substitute for those members, and Storage Spaces cannot turn the operating-system volume into a bootable mirror.
Choosing a USB presentation that hides the disks
A multi-disk enclosure may expose one combined device or mark the disks removable. Check Device Manager or Disk Management and use a direct or individually enumerated connection if the pool wizard cannot see the drives.
Formatting before checking the disk list
Confirm the physical identities and move needed files first. A drive letter, enclosure label and pool name are not interchangeable; verify the actual disks shown by Windows before accepting destructive changes.

Expecting double the raw capacity
Two-way mirroring consumes duplicate space for every file. A pair of equally sized drives therefore produces a usable volume smaller than their combined advertised capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming a mirror replaces a backup
Deletion, ransomware, corruption and physical loss of the whole system can affect both copies. Keep another backup set on separate storage or at another location.
Attempting boot mirroring with the data-volume wizard
Storage Spaces cannot host Windows. Boot mirroring needs the separate GPT, EFI, Microsoft Reserved, dynamic-disk and boot-file steps described for Windows Server, plus confirmation that the client edition and firmware support the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is RAID 1 on Windows the right choice?
Choose a Storage Spaces two-way mirror when uninterrupted access to a data volume matters and you can accept reduced usable capacity. It is especially useful for a game library or other working data where a single failed drive should not immediately make the volume unavailable.
Choose a conventional backup instead, or in addition, when the main risk is deletion, malware, corruption, theft or site damage. Choose a boot mirror only when you have a documented Windows Server-style design that matches your edition and firmware; it is not the normal Storage Spaces workflow for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
In short, identify the scope first. For Windows data, install two extra eligible drives and create a Storage Spaces Two-way mirror. For an existing legacy arrangement, a dynamic-disk mirror may be relevant, but dynamic disks are no longer the preferred general data path. For the operating system, stop and verify the separate boot-mirroring requirements instead of assuming a data mirror will make Windows bootable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the two drives have to be the same model?
Microsoft’s stated requirement is two additional drives that Windows recognizes as eligible physical disks; it does not require matching model numbers in the Storage Spaces steps. The pool’s practical capacity and behavior still depend on the drives and enclosure being accepted consistently by Windows.

Can I mirror only my game-library folder instead of an entire disk?
Storage Spaces creates a mirrored storage space that Windows mounts as a drive. Create the space first, then move or install the game library on that drive; folders that remain on another volume are not covered by this mirror.
What happens to programs installed on the Windows drive if a data-drive member fails?
Programs and files stored on the mirrored data volume can remain available from the surviving copy after one member fails. Programs installed on the separate Windows volume are governed by that volume’s own health, because Storage Spaces does not mirror the operating system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a two-way mirror suitable for protecting irreplaceable saves?
It helps with one physical-drive failure, but it is not sufficient by itself for irreplaceable data. Keep an independent backup because deletion, malware, corruption or loss of the entire computer can affect both mirror copies.
Can I use two USB drives for Storage Spaces?
Microsoft lists eligible USB-connected media, but eligibility depends on how the enclosure or hub presents the disks. If Windows marks a disk removable or hides multiple disks behind one identity, Storage Spaces may reject it even though File Explorer can read it. Check Device Manager or Disk Management and prefer individually visible, fixed-disk presentation.
Will a two-way mirror protect me if both drives fail at once?
No. The documented protection is tolerance of one physical-drive failure. Two failed members, loss of the computer, or loss of the location can make both copies unavailable, so keep another backup.
Can Storage Spaces mirror my existing Windows C: drive?
No. Storage Spaces cannot host the Windows operating system. It creates a separate mirrored data volume. Boot-drive mirroring is a different Windows Server procedure involving GPT, EFI and Microsoft Reserved partitions, dynamic disks and boot-file preparation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why is the usable capacity smaller than the two drive labels added together?
Two-way resiliency stores two copies of each file. One copy occupies space on each member, so the volume reports less usable capacity than the combined raw capacities. Use the size shown by Storage Spaces when planning data.
Should I choose a dynamic-disk mirror for a new Windows 11 data volume?
Generally no. Microsoft’s current guidance directs new data-resiliency deployments to Storage Spaces and says dynamic disks are deprecated except for mirror boot volumes. Use a dynamic mirror mainly when preserving an existing configuration or meeting a specific compatibility requirement.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 10 and Windows 11 data, connect two extra eligible drives and create a Storage Spaces Two-way mirror. It keeps two copies and can survive one physical-drive failure, but it is not a backup and cannot host Windows. Treat dynamic-disk and boot-volume mirrors as specialized legacy or Windows Server-style projects.
