Ocean Outlast is an expert Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge modpack built around survival in a huge ocean world. The listed V79A release (dated October 9, 2024) combines technology, magic, exploration, dungeons and more than 1,900 quests. Install the V79A client through CurseForge, allocate about 7 GB of memory, and use the separate V79A server pack when hosting. Every player and the server must use the same pack release and Forge version.

What Ocean Outlast is and who it suits

Ocean Outlast is an expert-difficulty pack by KevskyBoy. It takes the progression logic of a Skyblock-style challenge and places it in a broad ocean world containing randomly generated islands. Instead of following a short list of familiar vanilla objectives, you work through interlocking technology, magic, exploration and dungeon systems.

The pack lists more than 1,900 quests. They are not merely optional achievements: the quest book is intended to guide progression and teach the mechanics of the included mods. That makes the pack approachable for a new player who is willing to follow instructions, while the expert balance still expects planning, automation and resource management.

The pack contains roughly 300 mods, including many added for performance improvements or fixes. A large mod count increases loading time, memory demand and the chance that an extra, incompatible mod will interfere with the intended setup. Treat the published pack as a fixed software environment rather than a base to which you can freely add mods.

Version, release and files

Ocean Outlast uses Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. The project metadata reviewed for this guide lists Ocean Outlast V79A as the latest release, dated October 9, 2024. The files page also lists a matching Ocean Outlast V79A Server Pack for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge.

File or profile Version Date shown in project metadata Use
Ocean Outlast V79A client Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge October 9, 2024 Install and launch through the CurseForge app
Ocean Outlast V79A Server Pack Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge October 9, 2024 Server installation that matches the V79A client
Ocean Outlast Server V.67 Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge September 11, 2023 Older server generation; the listed archive is OceanOutlastServer67.zip and 354.47 MB

Do not combine the V.67 server files with a V79A client, or assume that an older startup script is appropriate for V79A. Release-specific configs, mods and scripts can change between generations. Download the server archive whose version matches the client profile you intend to run.

Hardware and memory requirements

KevskyBoy recommends allocating 7 GB of RAM to Ocean Outlast. The project information says the pack can start with 5 GB, but random lag spikes may occur at that allocation. Seven gigabytes is a sensible starting point, not a performance guarantee: render distance, Java configuration, background applications, storage speed and the number of server players all affect the result.

Client memory planning

  • Start with a 7 GB allocation if your computer has enough physical memory to leave room for the operating system and other applications.
  • Do not assign nearly all system RAM to Minecraft. A computer with 8 GB total memory, for example, cannot comfortably dedicate 7 GB to the game while Windows or another desktop system is running.
  • Close memory-heavy applications before launching. Browser tabs, recording software and large launchers can turn a marginal allocation into stutter.
  • If you use 5 GB, expect possible intermittent spikes rather than treating that figure as a supported performance target.

Server memory planning

A server needs memory for the Forge runtime, loaded chunks, world generation and every connected player. The pack information does not publish a fixed player-to-RAM formula or pack-specific Java flags. Allocate enough memory for your planned player count, then monitor actual usage and tick performance while players explore and generate new islands. Use the startup files included in the V79A archive instead of copying flags from an unrelated 1.12.2 pack.

How to install the client with CurseForge

CurseForge is the documented distribution and installation route. Install the app for your operating system first, then follow this sequence.

  1. Open CurseForge. Select the Minecraft section and sign in if the app requests an account.
  2. Find Ocean Outlast. Use Browse or Discover and search for the pack by name. Check that the selected file is Ocean Outlast V79A and that it targets Minecraft 1.12.2.
  3. Click Install. Let CurseForge download the modpack, Forge profile and required files. Do not interrupt the process while it resolves the approximately 300 included mods.
  4. Open My Modpacks. Select the newly installed Ocean Outlast profile and verify that its Minecraft version is 1.12.2 and its mod loader is Forge.
  5. Set memory before playing. In the profile’s installation or profile options, set the allocated memory to about 7 GB when your computer has sufficient total RAM.
  6. Launch once in single-player. Confirm that the game reaches the title screen and can create or load a world before attempting to connect to a server.

A first launch can take considerably longer than a vanilla installation because Forge must initialize a large mod set. Avoid changing the profile’s mods while it is still installing; troubleshoot only after the launcher reports completion.

Creating a world and understanding generation

Ocean Outlast’s world type is listed as Default. That setting can look surprising in a pack marketed around islands: seeing a large, ordinary-looking island at spawn does not by itself prove that generation failed. The pack’s ocean environment and island distribution are part of its configured world experience, while the world-type label remains Default.

Allow the initial world to finish generating before judging performance or terrain. New chunks can cause temporary pauses, especially when several players travel in different directions. Keep a backup before experimenting with world-generation settings, and do not change the pack’s generation-related mods on an existing save unless the pack author specifically documents that procedure.

How to set up an Ocean Outlast server

The safest approach is to prove that the V79A client launches, then install the matching V79A server archive in a separate, clean directory.

  1. Validate the client. Install V79A through CurseForge and launch it successfully. This confirms that your Java and graphics environment can run the pack before you add networking variables.
  2. Download the matching server pack. From the Ocean Outlast files page, choose the V79A Server Pack for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge. Do not select the older V.67 archive merely because its filename is familiar.
  3. Create a clean server directory. Make a new folder dedicated to this installation. Keeping it separate from another Forge server prevents old mods, configs and worlds from being loaded accidentally.
  4. Extract the archive without rearranging it. Preserve the directory structure and files supplied by the pack. If the archive contains Forge installers, libraries or startup scripts, keep them in the locations expected by those scripts.
  5. Run the supplied Forge/server startup file. The exact script names and Java arguments are not published in the project information. Open the downloaded archive and use the files it provides; do not substitute commands copied from a different modpack.
  6. Complete the first-run prompts. A normal Minecraft server first run creates files and requires acceptance of the EULA. Open the generated EULA file, change the acceptance value as instructed by Mojang’s server prompt, save it, and start the supplied script again.
  7. Set memory for the intended population. Adjust the supplied startup configuration only after reading its comments or instructions. Leave enough RAM for the operating system and monitor whether chunk generation or player activity causes long tick times.
  8. Configure access. Set the server name, difficulty and other rules in the generated configuration files. Use the whitelist and operator permissions to control who can join, especially while testing.
  9. Test locally first. Connect from the same computer or local network before opening a public port. Confirm that a player can join, load the quest book, break and place blocks, and travel into newly generated terrain.
  10. Back up before public access. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories, and retain a dated backup. Repeat backups after major progression milestones or configuration changes.

The indexed project information confirms the V79A server files but does not specify their exact startup script names or recommended Java flags. Those details can differ between releases, so the archive itself is the authoritative place to read them.

Making clients and server match

Every connecting player should install the same Ocean Outlast release, Minecraft version and Forge profile as the server. For a V79A server, that means the V79A client on Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge. A client on V.67, a different pack revision or a manually edited mod list can fail during the Forge handshake even if both installations display “1.12.2.”

  • Compare the pack release shown in CurseForge with the server archive name.
  • Confirm that Forge is the loader for both sides, not a vanilla or Fabric profile.
  • Do not remove or add mods to “make the list shorter” unless the author documents that change.
  • If one player receives a missing-mod error, reinstall the exact release instead of copying individual files from another player’s directory.

Performance tuning and safe changes

Begin with the unmodified pack. Because many of its approximately 300 mods are included for performance or compatibility fixes, an apparently useful optimization mod can introduce a new conflict. Change one setting at a time and keep a backup of the previous configuration.

Client-side adjustments

  • Lower render distance if exploration causes frame-time spikes or memory pressure.
  • Close other applications and allow the game time to finish loading before judging steady-state performance.
  • Keep the 7 GB allocation while diagnosing. Changing memory, graphics settings and mods simultaneously makes the cause difficult to identify.

Server-side adjustments

  • Pre-generate or explore cautiously only if the pack’s own documentation supports that workflow; otherwise let terrain generate naturally while monitoring tick times.
  • Limit simultaneous long-distance exploration when several players are online, since new chunk generation is CPU- and memory-intensive.
  • Schedule regular backups and stop the server cleanly before copying a live world.

Troubleshooting common problems

The launcher reports a missing mod or handshake failure

Check the release on both sides first. A V79A client cannot reliably join a V.67 server, and a manually altered profile may no longer match the server’s mod list. Reinstall the exact V79A profile and use the matching V79A Server Pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game starts but has random lag spikes

The author specifically notes that 5 GB can produce random spikes. Move toward the recommended 7 GB if your computer can spare it, close background applications and reduce render distance. On a server, examine player count and whether several users are generating new chunks simultaneously.

The spawn area looks like a normal large island

Do not assume failure from appearance alone. The documented world type is Default, so a normal-looking island is compatible with the pack’s configuration. Let the world finish loading and explore before changing generation files.

An added mod causes crashes or odd behavior

The project warns that Ocean Outlast does not support added mods. Remove the extra mod and restore the original profile or server backup. The author specifically notes removing VintageFix when using Essentials; treat that as a compatibility instruction for that combination, not as a general invitation to modify the pack.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, backups, access rules and hardware, but you are responsible for Java, firewall configuration, uptime and recovery. Managed hosting can remove much of that maintenance. A hosting panel lists Ocean Outlast as an available selection, but that listing does not establish author endorsement, affiliate terms, performance guarantees or support for every release.

Decision factor Self-hosted server Managed host
Setup effort Install the supplied server pack, Java runtime and network access yourself. Use a panel, then verify that it can import or install the V79A server files.
RAM and player capacity Limited by your computer or rented machine; you choose the allocation. Depends on the plan’s guaranteed memory and CPU; published pack-specific benchmarks are not established.
Backups and persistence You design the schedule, storage and restore process. Check retention, off-site options and whether backups include the complete world and configs.
Latency Depends on your connection and location. Choose a region close to most players and check the provider’s network policy.
Version support You control the exact Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge files. Confirm support for Forge 1.12.2 and the exact V79A server archive before paying.
Customization Full access, subject to the pack license and compatibility warnings. Panel restrictions may limit file access or custom startup settings.

Ask a managed provider whether it supports importing the supplied V79A archive, preserves Forge libraries, allows the required memory allocation and offers a restore test. Do not infer any of those capabilities from a generic “modpack” checkbox.

License and redistribution

The Ocean Outlast license permits reuse of the pack’s configs, scripts, exact mod list and quests. It does not permit reuse of custom assets such as quest icons, logos or backgrounds. If you distribute a server setup or configuration bundle, keep the permitted material intact, retain the license information and exclude the author’s custom visual assets unless you have separate permission.

These permissions do not override individual licenses for the third-party mods included in the pack. A server operator should preserve the notices and license files supplied with the release and avoid presenting the pack’s assets or branding as their own.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Client and server are both Ocean Outlast V79A.
  • Both use Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
  • The client has about 7 GB allocated when hardware allows; the server has memory sized for its player count.
  • The server was extracted into a clean directory and started with the files supplied in its archive.
  • The EULA prompt was completed, access rules were configured and a local connection succeeded.
  • No unsupported mods were added, and any compatibility change was reversed from backup before public launch.
  • World, configuration and permissions backups exist and have been tested.
  • Players received the exact same release rather than a copied or edited mod folder.
