Install Steam on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X exactly as you would on a Windows 11 PC: update Windows and ASUS software, install the Windows Steam client, sign in, and choose where each game is stored. The Ally X can also surface Steam titles in the Xbox full-screen experience and Armoury Crate SE, so you can use a controller-first library without giving up Steam’s storefront.
For saves, turn on Steam Cloud globally and for each supported game, then let Steam finish syncing before moving between the Ally X and another PC. Steam Cloud support is selected by each game’s developer; when a sync conflict appears, compare the local and cloud timestamps before launching. The instructions below cover installation, storage, transfers, conflicts, and repairs for the 2025 Windows-based model.

The 2025 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11 Home, so desktop launchers, Windows utilities, and Steam’s normal PC workflow are available. ASUS lists an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, two USB-C ports with DisplayPort, a UHS-II microSD reader, and an 80Wh battery for this model.

ASUS says the Ally supports major launchers, including Steam, and that downloaded games are automatically imported into the Armoury Crate SE Game Library. Xbox describes its full-screen experience as a Windows-based way to reach different storefronts, desktop apps, and mods. These statements establish launcher access, not a title-by-title compatibility guarantee: check each game’s Windows requirements, controller support, anti-cheat policy, and any secondary-launcher account requirement.

How should you prepare the Ally X before installing Steam?
- Complete Windows setup and connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use on the handheld.
- Open Windows Update, install pending updates, and restart when prompted.
- Open Armoury Crate SE, choose Update Center, apply available ASUS updates, and restart again if requested.
- Have your Steam account credentials and, if enabled, your Steam Guard verification method ready.
- Decide whether the first games belong on the internal SSD or a configured microSD card. Keep enough free space for the game, updates, shader data, and temporary installation files.
Doing the operating-system and firmware updates first avoids troubleshooting a launcher problem that is actually caused by an unfinished Windows or ASUS update.
How do you install Steam on the ROG Xbox Ally X?
Use the Xbox full-screen interface when Steam is listed there; otherwise switch to the Windows desktop and download the official Windows client from Steam’s site.
- In the Xbox full-screen experience, open Library, then My Apps.
- Select the PC storefront area and choose Steam. Follow the installer prompts.
- If Steam is not offered in that list, open Microsoft Edge on the Windows desktop, go to Steam’s official download page, download the Windows installer, and run it.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games. Complete any Steam Guard check.
- Allow Steam to update itself before starting a large game download.
Steam installs as a normal Windows application. You can return to the Xbox full-screen experience or Armoury Crate SE afterward; installing Steam does not remove either interface.
How do you install a Steam game and choose its storage?
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Choose the game and click Install.
- At the location prompt, select the internal SSD or a Steam library on the microSD card.
- Confirm the download size and available space, then start the installation.
- Wait for the download, shader processing, and first-run prerequisites to finish. A game may appear installed while these final tasks are still running.
- Launch the game once from Steam. Sign in to any required secondary launcher and complete its setup.
The internal SSD is the safer default for a frequently played or especially demanding title because its performance is more consistent. A high-capacity UHS-II microSDXC card is a practical expansion option, but verify its rated capacity, sustained performance, compatibility, and the seller’s return policy. Do not assume that a card’s peak sequential speed predicts every game’s loading behavior.
Why is a Steam game missing from Xbox or Armoury Crate SE?
The game can still be installed and launched from Steam even when an aggregated library has not detected it.

Refresh the automatic entries
Close and reopen Steam, the Xbox full-screen experience, and Armoury Crate SE after the game’s first successful launch. The first launch gives the library scanners a Windows shortcut and installation record to discover.
Add it manually in Armoury Crate SE
In Armoury Crate SE, open the Game Library, choose Manage Library, and add the game or its launcher manually if it is absent. Use the game’s actual executable or Steam shortcut, not an installer file.
Use Steam as the source of truth
If the title appears in Steam Library and its Play button works, an omission from an aggregated view is a library-display issue rather than proof that the installation failed.
How do you enable Steam Cloud saves?
Steam Cloud can store game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but each developer decides which files a title uploads.
Turn on Cloud globally
- Open Steam and choose Steam in the top-left menu.
- Select Settings, then Cloud.
- Turn on Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
Check the individual game
- In Steam Library, right-click the game.
- Choose Properties, then General.
- Confirm that the game’s Cloud Synchronization option is enabled.
A Steam Cloud logo on a store page means the game uses the service, not that every save type is covered. A developer may synchronize settings but exclude a particular save folder, profile, replay, or mod configuration. If a title behaves unexpectedly, consult that game’s documentation for its supported files.

How do you move Steam saves from another PC to the Ally X?
For a Cloud-enabled game, the safest transfer is to let Steam upload on the old computer and download on the Ally X before you play.
- On the old computer, connect to the internet and open Steam.
- Exit the game normally rather than forcing it closed.
- Wait until Steam’s synchronization indicator finishes and shows no pending upload.
- On the Ally X, connect to the internet, open Steam, and wait for the download to complete before selecting Play.
- Launch the game and confirm that the expected profile or save appears.
Steam’s default Windows Cloud-data location is C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata. For a game without Steam Cloud, saves may instead be in a developer-selected folder such as C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games. Before copying anything manually, identify the exact folder and file format in the game’s documentation; copying an arbitrary folder can overwrite newer progress or miss saves stored elsewhere.
Manual transfer precautions
- Close the game and Steam on both computers before copying files.
- Keep an untouched backup of the destination folder.
- Copy the complete save folder, including subfolders, rather than a single file unless the developer specifies otherwise.
- After copying, start the game offline first if you need to verify the local files without creating an immediate Cloud conflict; reconnect only after you know which version you want to keep.
What should you do when Steam reports a Cloud conflict?
A conflict means local and cloud files changed in different places without a completed synchronization. Do not click Play until you have compared the versions.
- Read the conflict dialog’s local and cloud timestamps.
- Identify which timestamp matches the session containing the progress you intend to keep.
- Choose the corresponding local or cloud version.
- Let Steam complete synchronization, then launch the game.
Offline play postpones synchronization until Steam is online again. If Steam says it cannot sync, restore the network or client connection first. Ignoring the warning and launching can create a new conflict and may replace the progress you meant to preserve.

Why are my Steam saves not syncing on the Ally X?
- Cloud is disabled globally: Recheck Steam > Settings > Cloud.
- The game is excluded: Open the title’s Properties > General page and check Cloud Synchronization.
- The game does not support the needed file: The developer controls which folders are uploaded; use the documented manual location when necessary.
- The Ally X is offline: Reconnect to Wi-Fi and leave Steam open until the sync indicator clears.
- A second launcher is involved: Sign in to that launcher and check its own save or account-sync settings.
- The game was closed abruptly: Reopen it on the computer containing the correct save, exit normally, and wait for a fresh upload.
Do not treat Steam being open as proof that a save is protected. The decisive check is the completed synchronization state after a normal game exit.

How do you repair a Steam game that will not launch?
- Restart Steam and Windows.
- Confirm that Windows, Armoury Crate SE, and the game are fully updated.
- In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare and reacquire missing files, then launch the game again.
Steam notes that one or more local configuration files can fail verification normally. That result does not automatically indicate corruption; configuration files may be recreated or intentionally differ from the distributed files.
If the error is a Cloud message rather than damaged content, resolve synchronization first. Also check the title’s Windows hardware requirements, controller layout, anti-cheat policy, and any required secondary-launcher sign-in before blaming the handheld.
Should Steam games go on the SSD or a microSD card?
Both locations work when configured as Steam libraries. The choice depends on consistency, capacity, and how often you move between portable and desk setups.

Keep Windows and the games you play most often on the SSD when possible. Use the microSD reader for a larger rotating library, and maintain backups of irreplaceable saves independently of the game installation.

- Connect the dock’s power supply to the dock.
- Connect the dock to the Ally X through USB-C.
- Attach the monitor or TV, keyboard, mouse, and network cable as needed.
- Select the correct display input and configure Windows display settings.
- Verify that the dock is actually supplying power while the game is running; USB-C video output alone does not guarantee adequate charging.
Check compatibility and power delivery for the exact dock model before purchase. A dock can simplify charging and peripherals, but it does not change a game’s Windows, controller, or anti-cheat requirements.
What are the most common setup mistakes?
- Launching immediately after an interrupted sync and accepting the wrong version.
- Installing a huge library before checking free SSD space and update headroom.
- Assuming every Steam title supports Cloud saves or every save file is included.
- Using a microSD card without checking sustained performance, capacity authenticity, or return terms.
- Adding a shortcut to Armoury Crate SE before the game has completed its first launch.
- Running a game that requires a second launcher or anti-cheat component without completing its sign-in or policy prompts.
- Interpreting a normal configuration-file verification message as proof that the installation is broken.
Can you play your entire Steam library on the Ally X?
You can install and launch Windows-compatible Steam games, but “entire library” is not a guarantee. Individual titles may require hardware above the Ally X’s capabilities, lack controller support, depend on another launcher, restrict handheld or anti-cheat environments, or omit the save files you expect from Cloud synchronization.

How can I back up an Ally X save before changing Cloud settings?
Exit the game and Steam, then copy the game’s documented save folder to an external drive or another protected location. Keep that backup separate from the Steam library so reinstalling or choosing the wrong conflict version cannot remove it.
Do Steam Cloud saves include mods and screenshots?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud only uploads files selected by the game’s developer, and mods or screenshots may use separate folders; check the title’s documentation and back up those files independently.
What happens to my Cloud saves after a factory reset?
After Windows is restored, reinstall Steam, sign in to the same account, and allow Cloud synchronization to finish before launching supported games. Titles without Cloud support require the manual backup you made before the reset.
