How to Set Up the Lenovo Legion Go S for the Best Gaming Performance

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Legion Go S setup is not a single “maximum” preset. Update the system, supply enough power, choose a frame-rate target the game can hold, then tune resolution, upscaling, thermals and storage around that target. Use the internal SSD for demanding games, reserve a fast microSDXC card for less latency-sensitive titles, and create per-game profiles instead of changing one global setting for everything.

What determines Legion Go S performance

Frame rate and responsiveness on a handheld are shaped by several controls at once. Power available to the system affects how long the processor and graphics hardware can sustain their clocks. Heat determines whether that performance continues after the first few minutes. Resolution and image-quality settings determine how much work each frame requires. Refresh rate controls how often the display can present a new frame, while the game’s own engine determines whether it can produce frames consistently.

These variables interact. A setting that produces a high peak FPS for a short benchmark may feel worse than a lower setting with even frame pacing during a long session. Treat the 120Hz panel as headroom for compatible games and for smoother presentation at lower frame rates, not as a guarantee that every game will render at 120 FPS.

No single publisher benchmark or named quotation establishes a universal Legion Go S FPS figure across all games. Results vary by title, patch, graphics preset, power source, temperature and driver version. The reliable method is to establish a repeatable target for each game and compare sustained behavior rather than one-minute peaks.

Prepare the handheld before tuning a game

1. Install every system update first

  1. Connect the Legion Go S to reliable power.
  2. Run Windows Update and install pending updates.
  3. Install available Lenovo BIOS and firmware updates.
  4. Install the latest chipset and graphics-driver updates offered for the device.
  5. Restart after the updates finish. If another restart is requested, complete it before testing.

Do not compare two graphics configurations while one test uses old drivers and the other uses new ones. Driver changes can alter shader compilation, game compatibility and frame pacing, making the comparison meaningless. Record the update date and driver versions if you are troubleshooting a particular title.

2. Start from a clean Windows session

Close launchers, browsers, recording tools and overlays that are not needed for the test. In Windows, leave Game Mode enabled. When Windows offers a per-app graphics preference, assign the game to the high-performance GPU option. Disable unnecessary startup applications and overlays, especially those that inject an on-screen display or capture frames, then restart if an application requires it.

Keep one repeatable test scene: a save point, race section, match or benchmark that you can revisit. Play it long enough to expose heat-related clock or FPS drops rather than judging performance from the opening menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the right power source and performance mode

Why external power matters

For demanding games, use a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at 65W or higher. That gives the handheld room for sustained performance. A charger that cannot provide enough power can force a lower operating mode or leave less headroom for the battery and cooling system, particularly during long sessions.

On battery, deliberately lower the power mode or frame-rate target. This reduces heat and battery drain and usually produces a more predictable session than trying to hold the same settings used while plugged in. Battery play is a separate profile, not a lesser version of the plugged-in profile.

Choose a sustainable performance mode

The Legion Go S exposes performance or power modes through its Lenovo controls. Names and available limits can vary by software version, so use the mode labels shown on your unit rather than assuming a particular watt value. Start with a balanced or moderate mode, run the game for several minutes, and increase power only when the target FPS is not stable and temperatures remain controlled.

Do not select the highest mode by default. More power can raise fan noise, heat and battery consumption without improving a game that is limited by its engine, resolution, memory or frame-rate cap. The useful question is whether an extra step in power mode improves sustained frame pacing in the section you actually play.

Set the display refresh rate separately from the FPS target

The 120Hz display can present 30, 40, 45, 60 or higher frame-rate targets cleanly when the game and synchronization settings cooperate. It does not require a game to run at 120 FPS. Select a refresh rate that fits the target and test variable refresh rate if the game and Windows support it. If VRR causes flicker, uneven pacing or compatibility problems in a specific title, compare results with it disabled for that profile.

Pick a frame-rate target you can hold

Choose the target before changing graphics settings. Common targets are 30, 40, 45 and 60 FPS. A locked 40 or 45 FPS can feel substantially steadier than an unlocked result that swings between a high peak and frequent drops. A 30 FPS target may be the most sensible choice for a visually demanding game when it prevents stutter and leaves thermal headroom.

Target When it fits What to watch
30 FPS Large, demanding games or battery sessions where consistency is the priority Use a frame cap and check for uneven frame times
40 FPS Games that cannot sustain 60 but feel better above 30 Use a compatible refresh-rate and VRR combination; verify pacing in motion
45 FPS Balanced plugged-in play when 60 is marginal Check that the game does not repeatedly dip below the cap after warming up
60 FPS Esports, older, indie and well-optimized games Do not trade stable frame times for a briefly higher uncapped peak

Apply the cap in the game when possible. If the game lacks a useful limiter, use the available Lenovo or driver-level control and test input response. Keep the same cap while comparing 1200p and 800p; otherwise you are changing two variables at once.

Choose between 1920×1200 and 1280×800

The Legion Go S display’s native 1920×1200 mode gives the sharpest image and the cleanest text when the game can sustain your target. 1280×800 reduces the rendering workload and is often the faster starting point for demanding games. The correct choice depends on the target, viewing distance and how well the game’s upscaler reconstructs detail.

Setting Advantages Costs and checks Best starting use
1920×1200 (native) Sharper text, HUD elements and fine geometry Higher rendering load; may require lower presets or a lower FPS target Older, indie and well-optimized games, or demanding titles that already hold the target
1280×800 More performance headroom and lower power demand softer image and less crisp text, especially without a good upscaler Demanding AAA games, battery play and situations where stable pacing matters most

When a game supports FSR or another upscaler, begin at 1280×800 or a lower internal-resolution setting, then raise the quality mode until the target is stable. Inspect small text, menus and the HUD while moving the camera; a setting that looks acceptable in a static scene can shimmer or blur during play. If text remains unclear, increase the render resolution or use a higher-quality upscaling mode before lowering other settings.

A repeatable resolution test

  1. Set the chosen power mode, refresh rate and FPS cap.
  2. Run the same scene at 1920×1200 using the game’s intended preset.
  3. Record sustained FPS, visible stutter, fan behavior and image clarity after several minutes.
  4. Repeat at 1280×800 without changing the cap or power mode.
  5. If 800p is faster, test the game’s upscaler quality modes and stop at the clearest mode that still holds the target.

Build per-game profiles instead of one global preset

Keep separate profiles for three broad groups: demanding AAA games, competitive or esports games, and older or indie games. A profile should include power mode, FPS cap, display refresh rate, brightness, fan behavior and the game’s graphics preset. Save the profile after testing so a launcher update or another title does not silently change it.

Demanding AAA profile

  • Use external 65W-or-higher USB-C power when possible.
  • Start at 1280×800 with an upscaler and a 30, 40 or 45 FPS target.
  • Reduce shadows, volumetric effects and reflections before sacrificing texture clarity, unless the game’s own settings show a different bottleneck.
  • Check the scene after the device is warm; a first-minute result is not enough.

Esports profile

  • Use the highest refresh rate that the game can feed consistently.
  • Favor a stable 60 FPS or higher target over an uncapped, fluctuating result.
  • Keep background applications and overlays to a minimum to reduce interruptions and latency.
  • Use the internal SSD when rapid map or match loading matters.

Older and indie profile

  • Test native 1920×1200 first; these games may have enough headroom for sharper output.
  • Use a moderate power mode if the target remains locked.
  • Consider microSDXC storage when load times and streaming demands are modest.
  • Lower the refresh rate or brightness on battery if the game already holds its cap.

Windows controls that are worth testing

Game Mode and per-app GPU preference

Leave Windows Game Mode enabled and check the game’s entry under Windows graphics settings. Where the option is available, select the high-performance GPU preference for the game rather than relying on a global setting. Restart the game after changing the preference; some titles read the GPU assignment only at launch.

Variable refresh rate

Test VRR with the game’s frame cap. VRR can make small fluctuations less conspicuous, but it is not a substitute for a sensible target. Compare a repeatable scene with VRR on and off, watching for flicker, brightness changes or inconsistent frame delivery. Keep whichever behavior is more stable for that title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Background processes and overlays

Disable unneeded startup software, browser windows, chat overlays and recording utilities while tuning. Re-enable one item at a time if you need it during normal play, then check whether it changes frame pacing. This isolates the cause instead of blaming the graphics preset for a background CPU or storage spike.

Install games on the right storage

Internal SSD

Use the internal SSD for demanding games, frequently played titles and games that stream assets while you move through a level. It is the safer default when you are unsure whether a game is sensitive to storage latency. Keep adequate free space so Windows, shader caches and game updates can complete without emergency cleanup.

microSDXC

A reputable, high-speed microSDXC card expands capacity for older, indie and less latency-sensitive games. Verify the card’s capacity and speed class before purchase, format it as requested by Windows, and monitor free space. A card can be convenient for a library, but it does not turn a storage-limited game into an SSD-equivalent experience.

Demanding AAA or asset-streaming titles Internal SSD Prioritize predictable loading and streaming behavior
Competitive games with frequent map loads Internal SSD where possible Reduce avoidable loading delays
Older, indie or turn-based games Fast microSDXC is often suitable Expands capacity with less likely latency impact

Control heat before lowering every setting

Keep the intake and exhaust vents clear, and do not use the handheld on a bed, blanket or other soft surface. A case, dock or grip should not block airflow. Watch for a pattern in which FPS or clock speed falls only after several minutes; that points to sustained thermal or power behavior rather than an immediately excessive graphics preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check fan behavior and temperatures using the controls available on your Legion Go S. If the device becomes hot and performance drops, first confirm airflow, power source and fan profile. Then lower the FPS target or power mode, reduce the most demanding settings, or move from 1200p to 800p. Changing one variable at a time makes the cause visible.

Thermal troubleshooting sequence

  1. Stop the game and confirm that vents are unobstructed.
  2. Reconnect a 65W-or-higher charger for a plugged-in test.
  3. Check whether the fan profile is responding and whether background processes are active.
  4. Repeat the same scene for several minutes.
  5. If drops persist, lower the target or resolution, then test again.

Accessories that support a reliable setup

A 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger is the most useful performance accessory for sustained play. A USB-C dock can add a display, Ethernet and peripherals when its power delivery and port requirements match the exact Legion Go S model. A case and screen protector improve travel durability but should not obstruct vents or controls.

Confirm USB-C PD and USB4 compatibility for the exact model before buying a charger or dock. Do not assume that every USB-C accessory supplies the same charging rate, video output or data bandwidth.

Use cloud gaming when local limits are the problem

Cloud gaming can cover a game that exceeds local performance or storage limits, but responsiveness depends on the network. Test the service on the same connection and in the location where you normally play. Latency, congestion and Wi-Fi consistency matter more than the Legion Go S graphics preset in this case.

Use cloud play selectively: it is useful when installation space or local hardware is the constraint, while local installation remains preferable when you need predictable offline access or the lowest possible input delay.

Troubleshoot common performance problems

FPS is high at first, then falls

Run the thermal sequence: clear the vents, connect adequate power, check fan behavior and repeat the test after the device warms up. If the drop remains, lower the target or resolution rather than chasing the initial peak.

The game looks blurry at 800p

Try a higher-quality FSR or other upscaler mode, inspect HUD and text while moving, and raise the render resolution if clarity remains unacceptable. Reduce another graphics setting to preserve the chosen target.

The game stutters despite a high average FPS

Apply a stable cap, test VRR, close overlays and background applications, and repeat the same scene. Check whether the game is installed on microSDXC and move it to the internal SSD if asset streaming or loading activity coincides with the hitching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery drains too quickly

Use the battery profile: lower the power mode, choose a 30 or 40 FPS target, reduce brightness and select 800p when image quality remains acceptable. Avoid comparing battery life with a plugged-in, high-power profile.

An accessory does not behave as expected

Check the exact Legion Go S model’s USB-C PD and USB4 requirements, confirm the charger’s output, and test the accessory without other devices attached. A dock that works for data may not provide sufficient power for sustained gaming.

A practical setup checklist

  • Windows, BIOS, firmware, chipset and graphics drivers are current.
  • The device has been restarted after updating.
  • A 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger is connected for demanding tests.
  • A target of 30, 40, 45 or 60 FPS is selected and capped.
  • Refresh rate and VRR have been tested for that target.
  • 1920×1200 and 1280×800 have been compared in the same scene.
  • Upscaling quality has been checked for text and HUD clarity.
  • AAA, esports and older/indie games use separate profiles.
  • Game Mode is enabled and the game has the high-performance GPU preference where available.
  • Unneeded startup apps and overlays are disabled during testing.
  • Demanding games are on the internal SSD; suitable lighter games use a reputable high-speed microSDXC card.
  • Vents are clear and performance has been checked after several minutes, not only at launch.

The best default starting point

For a demanding game, connect a 65W-or-higher charger, use a moderate-to-high performance mode, set a 30–45 FPS cap, and begin at 1280×800 with a quality upscaler. Move to 1920×1200 only if the target remains stable and text clarity justifies the extra load. For an older or well-optimized game, start at native 1920×1200 and test 60 FPS. Save each result as a per-game profile, then revisit it after major Windows, BIOS or driver updates.
